by Anonymousreply 13September 8, 2022 5:37 PM

I didn't think I cared but my tearing up would think otherwise. Respect to her.

They added the King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral tonight.

by Anonymousreply 32September 8, 2022 5:44 PM

Shocking news. 25 years after Diana’s funeral…and she’ll have to endure the same overly sentimental histrionic displays she bristled against back then.

by Anonymousreply 33September 8, 2022 5:44 PM

Sad day for all you American DL monarchists.

by Anonymousreply 34September 8, 2022 5:45 PM

Holy shit! The news report I’m listening to just referred to the King and the Queen Consort…it just doesn’t seem real.

BBC just said something to the effect of "QEII was a modest and humble servant....unlike more vainglorious members of her family"

Shade! Shade!

by Anonymousreply 37September 8, 2022 5:46 PM

Well, we knew it was coming. I'm not really sad.

by Anonymousreply 38September 8, 2022 5:46 PM

I don't know if I can get used to hearing God Save the King.

by Anonymousreply 39September 8, 2022 5:46 PM

I had the interesting experience of working as assistant to one of the editors (yes, there are more than one) of the HQ release "Finding Freedom". I thought you guys - especially the Crown sympathizers - might like to know that while the British Royal Family does occasionally come across rather poorly in the book, there were also definitely bits that, while verified to be true by numerous sources, were in the end kept from the finished draft. This was done mostly at the behest of one of our senior editors, who in addition to being quite old is also conservative.

For instance, it was left out that one of the main reasons Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the U.K. is the noxious stench that fires from QEII's practically decomposing cunt. There is absolutely no way to remove it (the smell) from any room she's entered. This is one reason Miss Markle wanted to use air fresheners in St. George's Chapel at Windsor the day of her wedding. The Prince had warned Markle what it was like to live with this fetid, all-pervading stink but she had no idea it could be so bad. Ultimately, she felt it was best to raise her child away from the toxic reek, which court doctors still do not understand.

Anyway, ask me any questions if you like. My contract with the publisher's up.

by Anonymousreply 40September 8, 2022 5:47 PM

One doesn't have to be a monarchist, R34, just soeone inereted in and attuned to history.

by Anonymousreply 41September 8, 2022 5:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 42September 8, 2022 5:49 PM

What an amazing life she lived. Wow.

by Anonymousreply 43September 8, 2022 5:49 PM

I’m not a fan of the monarchy but it’s definitely the end of an era. Growing up in Canada she’s been such a huge part of everyday life. Her face is everywhere. Now would be a good time to do away with the royal family.

by Anonymousreply 44September 8, 2022 5:51 PM

R41 One doesn't have to be a monarchist for what? For it to be a sad day? I am interested and attuned to history, but it's not a sad day for me because the Queen of England died. I figure it is for the many Queen-lovers here, though.

[quote]The Widowhood Effect is the increase in the probability of a person dying during a relatively short period of time after their long-time spouse has died. The pattern indicates a sharp increase in risk of death for the widower particularly, but not exclusively, in the three months after the death of their spouse.

The Queen will attend a gala performance in her honour at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen.

[quote]On 11 September, Queen Margrethe will attend a special thanksgiving service at Church of Our Lady – Copenhagen Cathedral. At midday, a luncheon will be held on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog. by Anonymousreply 171September 8, 2022 7:46 PM

Can we have her stuff?

by Anonymousreply 172September 8, 2022 7:48 PM

Harry and Meghan basically abused her toward the end of her life, all merely in order to drum up interest in them and make money. They refused the opportunity to meet with her despite being in Europe for days. They were monstrous to her and it wouldn't surprise me if the family partly blamed them for adding to her final burden.

by Anonymousreply 190September 8, 2022 7:57 PM

Her photo from two days ago was a tell-tale sign and anyone could’ve made a bet she was gonna go. England is about to head into it’s flop era.

by Anonymousreply 194September 8, 2022 8:02 PM

How utterly wonderfully symbolic is Harry arriving after the Queen's death is announced. Always missing the mark, Harry.

Several questions emerge around the Sussexes: will they return to using their HRHs now that the person who told them they couldn't is dead?

Harry is now 5th in line, his children (now HRHs themselves), his children 6th and 7th. Will this bring Harry's efforts in his court case any benefits?

Will the family go on grey-rocking him?

And how uncannily scaring the comment yesterday that with the Harkles' luck, HM would die the next day and spoil their WellChild event!

The funeral is ten days from now. One expects that Meghan will have to fly home to be with the children, leaving Harry to do the funereal honours.

William and Kate are now TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall AND Cambridge, and William is now heir to the revenues of the Duchy of Cornwall.

Has anyone heard from Omid Scabies today?

by Anonymousreply 195September 8, 2022 8:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 196September 8, 2022 8:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 197September 8, 2022 8:02 PM

Lady C had all the details on Diana, and published them, and was laughed at for doing so. Time proved her assertions correct. Doubt she has the same depth of contacts now, but she clearly in certain circles (or peripheries thereof) and still privy to certain information and/or used by a tool by those classes. Prince William will become Prince of Wales after the coronation, pending a ceremony at a fancy old castle in Wales.

The Dukedom of Edinburgh is set to be bestowed on Prince Edward.

Charlotte won't automatically become Princess Royal after Anne dies. They don't always use the title. Anne was in her thirties when she was given the title, and is still typically known as Princess Anne.

by Anonymousreply 203September 8, 2022 8:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 211September 8, 2022 8:10 PM

R205 - Yes, there were. Charles and Camilla were already in Scotland and got to Balmoral in the morning. Anne was also in Scotland and arrived quickly. If the Queen died in the afternoon, it was likely that those three, and even William, Edward, Sophie, and Andrew got there in time, although she probably wasn't conscious.

by Anonymousreply 212September 8, 2022 8:11 PM

The world is trulycoming to an end. I find the news hard to believe, even if she was 96 and in poor health. Really sad today. Goodbye, Your Majesty.

by Anonymousreply 214September 8, 2022 8:12 PM

I know it sounds goulash, but I am curious as to what happened. Do we know for a fact that no members of the family weren’t there? I thought Charles was close by. I wonder if she went downhill all of a sudden—like minutes. Did she collapse, or have a heart attack? It definitely caught the family off guard.

Damn, I’m a noosy body.

by Anonymousreply 235September 8, 2022 8:26 PM

R229 - Right. He landed 15 minutes after they announced.

It says something that they didn't wait for his arrival to do so. - it shows they barely consider him part of the family. I don't even know why he bothered - he had to know he'd get no private speech with her, and the others would treat him like a leper. I suppose it was the optics, but even those didn't turn out well.

by Anonymousreply 240September 8, 2022 8:29 PM

R235 Blame the DM, not DL. Last night Meghan's mouthpiece was splashed all over the front pages about how William was to blame for it all and had crossed certain lines and wasn't prepared to unpack all that . . .

Who do you think Omid Scobie got those orders and the narrative from? Paddington Bear?

Harry and Meghan have poisoned the Queen's last couple of years of life, thoughtlessly, deliberately, cynically, and cruelly.

They are part of this narrative because that narrative begs the question of how the family is going to handle them now that the Queen's restraining hand is gone.

by Anonymousreply 257September 8, 2022 8:40 PM

I don’t think the Queen was ever pretty, nor did she need to be. She wouldn’t give a flying corgi about what us common folk thought of her looks. Pretty meant nothing when it came to her and insisting (against the evidence all can see) that it did misunderstands her.

by Anonymousreply 258September 8, 2022 8:41 PM

R253 - Jesus, what's your problem? Beautiful skin is a physical asset just like a nice nose or white teeth. People meeting her for the first time in person described by being stunned at what Dame Margot Fonteyn described as, "the beauty and delicacy of the Queen's complexion".

Christ, even as an old woman you can see how beautiful her skin was.

by Anonymousreply 259September 8, 2022 8:42 PM

I wouldn’t be surprised if William insisted he wouldn’t share a plane with Harry, and so Harry had to wait for the plane to return to his location after it ferried the rest up to Balmoral. Will has his father’s pettiness but has been better at hiding it so far.

When my mom died at 90 in 2018, odd as it sounds I was somewhat comforted that Queen Elizabeth was still on this side of Eternity; since I was 4 years old and saw her coronation pics in the World Book encyclopedia I thought "This lady looks like Mama!" And the older they grew, the similarities continued.

My sister from Texas texted me, "Our Auntie Elizabeth made her transition. Nicely done; RIP queen! I was just at the grocery store thinking another one ascends to the "earbob" section of the pearly gates."

I responded "And don't forget their omnipresent "pocketbook," never "purse"! Shades of Mama and Great-Aunt Eva."

Oh yeah there's gon' be an earbob- & pocketbook-lady party in the Great Hereafter/Thereafter!

R260 Last night the headlines were about Omid Scobie pointing a finger at William as being at fault for the rift. Omid Scobie is the Sussex mouthpiece. It follows on Meghan threatening the BRF with more dirt in the CUT interview, and a few months after Harry said he was protecting the Queen by making sure she had the right sort of people around her.

If William doesn't want to be in the same room with Harry today, I'd hardly call that petty.

Harry and his wife have been attacking William, Kate, Charles, and the Queen for two years. And as recently as last night.

The fact that they let Harry through the gates of Balmoral is remarkable.

R298, I noticed the superscript / smaller-sized font for the "8th of September" part. That's actually more modern in that Microsoft Word does that, automatically. I turned my automatic stuff off for MS Word because I prefer to not have the superscript and small-size font.

But what's wrong with Times Roman?

R300 Times Roman has been updated to Times New Roman which is thinner and has less embellishments or tails on some letters. Even so, a more modern looking serif font would be Didot, which is very clean.

Who knows why Harry was late, but in my feverish imagination he had a big meltdown over the whole situation and Meghan had to calm his hysterical ass down. One thing’s for sure, he should have made a beeline to Balmoral as soon as they landed in the UK the other day.

by Anonymousreply 317September 8, 2022 10:58 PM

Bone cancer.

That's why Harry made such a shit-fuss about making sure "she had the right people around her," and almost gave the privacy of the queen away in an ego move. Among all the family's reactions to the news of her illness, his was the only one that said, "IMPOSSIBLE! I'LL SAVE HER!"

She was receiving treatments but it progressed quickly, or seemed to, as in older patients the pains can be considered arthritis or discomfort of age. It is possible that this type of osteosarcoma disadvantaged a failing immune system. The COVID and the strain of family and national work also were understood to have played a role, but her demeanor was upbeat and her mind clear. The surprising smiles and engagement with people showed a resolve to enjoy every minute, or seem to. She went to Balmoral for maximum privacy and it was the season.

by Anonymousreply 318September 8, 2022 11:06 PM

Thanks, R309. I didn't realize Times Roman and Times New Roman were that different. Didot looks nice. I also like Garamond.

R173, yes, I’m sure the only reason the Queen died is because she had an uppity black daughter in law. I’m sure her husband of seventy years had absolutely nothing to do with it, she probably considered him very insignificant compared to Meghan. And who can blame her? Apparently Meghan is the most important person in the entire UK, since she is to blame for every single bad thing that happens there.

by Anonymousreply 338September 8, 2022 11:59 PM

[quote]Earlier today we were quoting the endlessly credible Lady C as saying she had bone cancer.

Bone cancer is a blood cancer. Cancer of the bone marrow. Perhaps she did have leukemia as some had guessed, but it could have been any other type like multiple myeloma, etc.

by Anonymousreply 339September 9, 2022 12:04 AM

Lady C claims that she has been repeatedly using bone-related idioms when speaking of the Queen's health recently, by way of hinting that the Queen had bone cancer. I don't watch her regularly, so can't say whether this is true, nor has the Queen's cause of death been revealed by anyone else.

The Rt Rev Dr Iain Greenshields, 68, stayed with the Queen at Balmoral after being invited to perform a sermon at Braemar and Crathie Parish Church, the church where Her Majesty worshipped while at the castle in Scotland.

Greenshields, a Kirk minister and moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, had dinner on Saturday evening and lunch on Sunday afternoon with the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Princess Royal. He told The Times: ā€œIt was a fantastic visit. Her memory was absolutely amazing and she was really full of fun.

ā€œIt came as a great shock to me when I heard she was gravely ill because she was in amazingly good form over the weekend.

ā€œShe was the life and soul of things. She was speaking very personally to me about her time there way back when she was a child, she was talking about her horses from the past, naming them from 40 years ago, people’s names and places. She was quite remarkable.

vā€œWe were talking about Ukraine and the situation there and her sadness at what she was seeing happening.

ā€œShe was talking about church affairs, she was very apprised of everything going on in the Church of Scotland, which would put a lot of our members to shame, she probably knew a lot more than the average member. It was only a few days ago, I can’t believe it.ā€

The previous weekend, the Very Rev Dr Martin Fair, 58, who has been minister at Arbroath St Andrews for 30 years, stayed as her guest at Balmoral.

He said: ā€œI found her to be bright and in very good spirits, so I was sad to hear the announcement about her deterioration. We were in her sitting room and in the dining room as part of a family gathering — it was a privilege to be part of it.

ā€œShe was absolutely switched on about everything, current affairs and historical memories. She was on very good form.

I wonder if the crowds will refrain from booing them out of respect for HM or do so to show their anger with H&M.

There’s no way back for them now. They will be seen, correctly, as having shown incredible disrespect to his grandmother during her final days.

by Anonymousreply 422September 9, 2022 1:52 PM

R421, the best tribute to the Queen would be to give Charles a chance to prove himself. Most decent people will.

by Anonymousreply 423September 9, 2022 1:59 PM

R423 Well said.

Watching them enter BP on foot in black, looking so small but steady, and move slowly through the courtyard was emblematic of how fantastic the BRF are at optics.

No one should underestimate the hold the monarchy still has on Britain, and why the Windsors continue. And, Charles has behind him now an extremely popular relatively youthful and hugely popular Prince and Princess of Wales with a very attractive young family.

Harry and Meghan got it so wrong, that it beggars description. They could have been part of all this, as well as their children.

I get not everybody likes monarchy or any of it, but I cannot understand why people choose to behave so badly and disrespectfully. Just shut up for awhile. It's OK, sometimes, to shut up. When most people seem to care, what guides you to believe the fact you don't really matters to anybody? What makes you think suddenly you have the capacity to influence anything, considering your track record to date?

Then, with his other son, the King deliberately avoids referring to them as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and calls them plain old Harry and Meghan.

by Anonymousreply 438September 9, 2022 5:30 PM

Shame on Della and anyone else gleefully twisting Charles’ words to make it seem like he took an opportunity to take a passive aggressive snipe at his youngest son. Here is what Charles said VERBATIM. Note that he referred to both of his children and daughters-in-law by their first names. However, he also made it a point to identify William and Catherine’s automatically designated new titles.

[quote]As my Heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me. He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades. Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty. With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given. I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.

by Anonymousreply 448September 9, 2022 5:56 PM

r439, I stand by my post at r436.

Yes, he called William and Catherine William and Catherine.

What's significant is that it was in the context of announcing William's new titles.

He immediately refers afterwards to another son; a son and daughter in-law that also have a style- Duke and Duchess, but instead of referring to them with that style, he calls them "Harry and Meghan".

If you don't think that was deliberate, may I interest you in buying some rare, artisanal cheese I harvested from the Moon?

by Anonymousreply 449September 9, 2022 5:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 460September 9, 2022 6:12 PM

R453 I agree that he was diplomatic and humanized his family by using their names instead of titles with the exception of declaring that his heir has now had a change in title, this was not a slight towards Harry and I’m not sure how people can misconstrue this.

by Anonymousreply 461September 9, 2022 6:13 PM

Charles only took Clarence House for sentimental reasons. He was close to The Queen Mother and it was her former residence.

by Anonymousreply 472September 9, 2022 7:11 PM

Oh he's always sounded like that, r471, even when he was a teenager. Had you never heard his actual voice before, or seen Josh O'Connor play him on "The Crown"?

by Anonymousreply 473September 9, 2022 7:12 PM

[quote] Is it now the House of Mountbatten-Windsor?

There were agreements worked out that it is supposed to be before the Queen died, but Charles as the King is now free to do whatever he likes (he need not abide by his mother's ishes). What usually happens is that a queen regnant is the last of a dynasty (unless her sister takes over from her), and the person who succeeds her represents a new dynastic name: so Elizabeth I was the last of the House of Tudor, and Anne was the last of the House of Stuart, and Victoria was the last of Hanover. Charles could decide he wants to start a new dynasty named after his father's family and be the House of Mountbatten; but technically the agreement put in place now is for him to be the start of the house of Windsor-Mountbatten, which is a continuation of the last dynasty.

[quote]Too bad King Charles didn't remove the stick from his ass before recording his first address as King. My god, the constipation of his voice quality.

I will say, having just watched it, that I detected no shading of the Sussex's. Indeed, his mention of them was quite a bit warmer than I expected.

Who gets to christen Cunard's new MS Queen Anne, I wonder. Lilibet did the Queen Mary and current Queen Elizabeth (at the time, the president of Cunard observed that she was the only person there who'd been present for the christening of all of Cunard's ships of that name, having been there when her mother did the first, and then doing the QEII herself), and Camilla did the Queen Victoria. I mean, I guess it defaults to Camilla, but they should consider letting Kate do it.

by Anonymousreply 476September 9, 2022 7:25 PM

Charles’s mention of Harry and Meghan was perfect. They can’t claim they weren’t acknowledged. They can’t claim it wasn’t warm, at least on the surface. But it was a statement of fact that they have a new life in America and that’s that.

Certainly an eventful trip for the Sussexes, perhaps not in the way they envisioned. Are they both sticking around until the funeral? As someone on here posted, that’s going to be awkward if they can’t bolt.

by Anonymousreply 477September 9, 2022 7:38 PM

I guess this thread is now going to be all Harry and Meghan, all the time. Good a time as any to leave.

by Anonymousreply 478September 9, 2022 7:51 PM

Bye.

The transcript of the paragraph where the princes and spouses and titles were mentioned ran to eight lines of print. Seven of ā€˜em about the Cambridges.

by Anonymousreply 479September 9, 2022 8:22 PM

^As the new King just sent a pointed message to the public about Harry and Meghan, they are fair game on this thread.

Charles made his family situation clear to the press and public: no, he will not try to bring Harry and Meghzn back, as rumours have suggested; they are te out, and out for good. Charles sugar-coated it with what I am sure was sincere-ish fatherly love as far as Harry goes, and by doing so, endures that if the two go on trashing the King his wife, and his brother, it will be the Sussexes who will look bad.

He conferred new stardom on William and Kate, making his little addendum about the Sussexes sound like a P.S., which it was. He's left them their worthless titles, their kids are HRHs - so they can't bitch that they were pumished unfairly.

But those symbold mean something BIG in Britain, far less in America.

It's on a par with his mother's "recollections may vary".

The old dog was capable of learning new tricks from Mum. This is the same man who wanted to issue a point by point rebuttal after the Oprah interview, but was restrained by the Queen.

Anyone who thinks that the Sussexes were anything but, at a minimum, bitter hearing this, is naive. I'm sure they were livid about the comparison with William and Kate, especially given that Charles' little by-the-by to them was tacked onto the far bigger news of Charles creating William Prince of Wales immediately.

No one in the family or the court or the government would miss the coded message.

The week that the Sussexes had counted on to up their status and celebrity glitter has, instead, been ruinous for them.

They never see the next move coming.

I wonder what Netflix is thinking.

VOTN and others: William and Kate (the new "Waleses") are staying at KP, they have a lavish apartment and offices there, they've already indicated they will be keeping that as their London touchdown until William is King. They also have their Norfolk bolthole, and now Adelaide House at Windsor for them main pad as they kids are going to school there now during the week.

Charles has said previously he'd move into BP once he's King, and evacuate Clarence House. CH will now become offices perhaps, until such time as Prince George perhaps want so use it as his residence years from now. Or more likely, a place for a widowed Queen Camilla to live our her days after CIII's passing. These spots can be converted back and forth from living quarters to offices easily.

I loathe the hypocrisy of her and it and them, so I do my bit to agitate them. They're low class scum anyway, it isn't that hard.

by Anonymousreply 489September 9, 2022 9:14 PM

R436 Love the rhetorical stiletto bit, Della.

And leave us not forget the significance of "rebuild their lives overseas" to Harry's court case against the UK government to get Judicial Review of the Home Office's decisions on his security when "visiting" Britain.

I want a tee-shirt with Recollections May Vary on the front - a tote bag would be even better. Anyone seen them out there?

Further wondering if Charles, in wielding that stiletto this afternoon, was hoping to persuade both Sussexes to skip the funeral, the way they skipped the rest of the Jubly - or at least, Meghan.

Why the fuck she'd show her face there with egg on her face there after this week's shambolic showing and Charles' Fare Thee Well, with every single person in the Abbey grinning privately, is beyond me.

Everyone screamed the Queen should take the titles, Charles should take the titles . . . but the two suavely went one better: they left the Sussexes with titles that are increasingly worthless in America, tattered window dressing instead of Proof of Significance. And wait till the new Prince and Princess of Wales visit America.

I suppose if Harry gets mean enough in the memoir, there's always the Line of Succession avenue.

R486 Kensington Palace remains their LONDON HOME.

They did not MOVE OUT of it. They took a school year place nearer to the Queen, their kids' school, and her family. Adelaide Cottage wasn't renovated or built for them. It was move in ready.

They probably knew the Queen wasn't going to last much longer and with Charles and Camilla now officially at BP and Clarence House, they could cover the base at Windsor.

The understanding wasn't that KP would be their home for the rest of their lives. It was until such time as Charles acceded to the throne and/or William did, making other arrangements necessary.

It remains their HOME IN LONDON.

by Anonymousreply 508September 9, 2022 11:35 PM

Sorry, but after thinking this through a bit more, I am not siding with Della's perspective.

Why should Charles elaborate further on Harry & Meghan, when he, as a father, is clearly disappointed that his own youngest son has estranged himself, and continues to do so? Wouldn't ANY father take the same tack? This is like me being pissed that my family forgot to send me a fake invite to a summer BBQ where everyone still lives back home, when I'd clearly stated I was not coming back home that summer. Such 'ceremony' craved to be read by folks now thinking this was 'deep shade' is not appropriate and not in the Royal custom either.

As has been stated, new titles weren't being bestowed upon the Sussexes, so mentioning their existing titles all over again would sound pointless and very forced. Throwing out a "you're always welcome back here at Buckingham" would be criticized for being disingenuous, and ACTUALLY shady. He said he loved them, and wishes them well in their new life 'abroad', which connotes adventures, travels and essentially positive things, but a clear fatherly tone that he wished they would come home, but accepts their decision. It was very well stated.

Outside of that, a father is not expected to pretend he isn't disappointed when their kids move 10,000 miles away, not even the King. So yeah, some basic Dad vibes is all there is to it. I don't blame him one bit.

The TIMES:

As a princess, the future Queen would often slip unnoticed into the stalls of a West End theatre to watch a play. Things naturally became more difficult after her accession but The Stage optimistically told readers in 1952 that if the Queen wished to pay an informal visit to a theatre London playgoers should pretend not to notice and allow her an evening off. She once told FranƧois Hollande, the French president, that as a girl she had wanted to be an actress (this was eight years before her double-act with Paddington). Hollande suggested that in a way she already was. ā€œYes,ā€ the Queen conceded. ā€œBut always the same role.ā€

The Queen met many actors, several of whom have played her. One of the most memorable was Prunella Scales, in A Question of Attribution, Alan Bennett’s play about Anthony Blunt, the Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures and Russian spy. The women met afterwards and Scales gave a curtsy. ā€œI expect you think I should be doing that to you,ā€ the Queen said.

Sometimes Her Majesty had to pull rank on Another Majesty. At a concert in 1982 to mark the centenary of the Royal College of Music, the Queen Mother was heard to hiss ā€œWho do you think you are?ā€ as her daughter elbowed her way past to take the plum seat. ā€œThe Queen, Mummy, the Queen,ā€ her daughter replied pointedly.

The Queen’s first prime minister was born 101 years before her last. Reflecting on her longevity for an American audience, the academic Matt Glassman pointed out that she had reigned for almost 30 per cent of US history. ā€œThe Brits think 100 miles is a long distance,ā€ he said. ā€œAmericans think 100 years is a long time.ā€ Our American friends, though fond of the monarchy, don’t always get it. At a reception in Washington after the war, President Truman introduced Princess Elizabeth to his mother-in-law, who told the future Queen: ā€œI’m so glad your father was re-elected.ā€

by Anonymousreply 512September 10, 2022 1:59 AM

I've been wanting to mention, in case no one else mentioned it, but a BBC newscaster stated on yesterday that Charles the II was the Queen's forebear. She is not descended from Charles II. He had no legitimate children. She is descended from Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of James I and aunt of Charles II. Please correct me if there was any provable illegitimate descent directly from him to her.

by Anonymousreply 513September 10, 2022 2:08 AM

R366 then how come McConnell isn't dead? He always has blue hands. Maybe because he is one of Satan's children and can't die. He is one of the undead I guess.

by Anonymousreply 514September 10, 2022 2:17 AM

I believe you're correct, R513—Elizabeth was not directly descended from any of Charles II offspring.

However, four of her grandchildren are: William and Harry (through their mother) from both Henry FitzRoy and Charles Lennox, and the two York girls (again through their mother) from Charles Lennox, Anne Lennard, and the Duke of Monmouth.

Okay, we're not burying Superman.

by Anonymousreply 526September 10, 2022 3:35 AM

Lady Colin explained there is a news black-out of sorts that prevents the public from learning about all that's going on behind the scenes.

For instance, no photographers following the queen's body to the mortuary where she's been enbalmed, no photos of the arrival of her coffin, etc.

One would think the foreign press could give a flip, but so far nothing.

There are rumors that Diana is not buried on that island in the lake at Althorp. She is actually in the family vault, but the family put it about that she's on the island (which nobody can access) so that tourists won't haunt the Spencer vault.

[quote]They cringiest part of CIII's speech was the last line - the quote from Hamlet. Really? You go with Hamlet? Shakespeare ok, but Hamlet no. Esp. since that line was said to the dead Ophelia. The line, "Good night, sweet prince,/And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." is said by Horatio over Hamlet's corpse in the last act of the play. I doubt r496 has ever read a word of Shakespeare

^And you, sirrah. I suppose would look like fresh peaches and acteam after being up likely for going on 48 hours at 75 as your mother in law the Queen dies, your husband becomes King, you're already in the public sight as never before, and your husband be ones head of state, head of the family, has to write several speeches, sign the Accession papers, start travelling to rack of the capitals of the other three nations in GB, dressed in black, whilst the monumental task of overseeing the biggest state funeral in our lifetimes . . . And remaining calm and dignified and holding her grief-stricken husband together.

A bender? She probably has't slept since Thursday morning when the axe finally fell.

Pssst, don’t mention this aloud,

DIANA HAD MORE FLOWERS šŸ’

by Anonymousreply 550September 10, 2022 11:08 AM

Recall The Crown... it's entirely possible she was embalmed at Balmoral, with mobile equipment. I know they make so much shit it up but that seems easily done to assure her privacy. In any event, they've kept the photos of Diana suppressed for twenty-five years... photos of the Queen's body would be useless.

by Anonymousreply 551September 10, 2022 11:24 AM

What they're doing is removing the flowers from the forecourt at Buckingham Palace and other locations each day. At BP, for example, there's a place designated in Green Park, across the road.

by Anonymousreply 552September 10, 2022 11:26 AM

To Della's point yesterday re the indication the Harkles have got what they wanted - which is out - from The Telegraph today:

While William flew up at his father’s behest – for constitutional as well as familial reasons – The Telegraph has learnt that Harry was not summoned, but took the decision to travel to Scotland after Buckingham Palace announced that the Queen was under medical supervision following doctors’ concerns.

by Anonymousreply 553September 10, 2022 11:27 AM

I see Major Johnny over the King's shoulder at the Accession Council. Perhaps Camilla's just tired.

Major Johnny seems to be a feature of the reign. Now thank we all our God.

by Anonymousreply 554September 10, 2022 11:28 AM

The Accession Council looks a bit like one of those occasions where the royals go home and laugh after about the things that go wrong.

There's this outsized document to be signed and two copies, on a table too small for both copies and the fountain pens and the inkwells and Charles, Camilla and William, signing, are all grimacing and trying to figure out how to write around the inkwells. It's awkward and comic. The kind of thing the Queen was said to love.

by Anonymousreply 555September 10, 2022 11:33 AM

King Charles in probably appalled by the quality of those mountains of cheap flowers wrapped in cellophane. And petroleum based candles in plastic holders. Huge carbon footprint. But it's the thought that counts so nobody would ever say anything.

by Anonymousreply 557September 10, 2022 11:40 AM

One thing I note is Charles' preferred car is not the newer Rolls but rather one of the really old ones. He's been seen twice - arriving from Balmoral and today from St. James' Palace to BP - and both times it's the old(est?) one... - the1978 Rolls Royce Phantom VI.

Still a bit of Edwardian in him.

Why are gay men and old women in America so interested in the British royal family? I'm a gay American man but I'm asking because I'm not really interested. The fascination with them on DL is very interesting and perplexing to me. There are English people in my family far less interested in the royals than some American gay men. No offense meant.

by Anonymousreply 583September 10, 2022 4:21 PM

It's stomach-turning to see that no-account whore inserting herself into all this. She should say, "I've got to take care of my kids", and go back to America.

by Anonymousreply 584September 10, 2022 4:22 PM

[quote]I can be interested in the thread and the replies, and the jokes. Without being interested in the monarchy.

The thread and jokes are *about* the monarchy, r580. I assume you have no interest in...say....plastic hip joints. Would you participate in a thread about plastic hip joints? Would jokes about plastic hip joints interest you? Sorry, but your "Why are gay men and old women...?" question is condescending and generalizing. The fact that you can't understand that historical figures are of interest to people says more about you than it does about them.

by Anonymousreply 585September 10, 2022 4:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 594September 10, 2022 4:42 PM

The desire to be magnanimous is in direct proportion to the amount of power and security one has.

If the reports are correct that William initiated the joint walk-a-about with the Sussexes, William's enhanced position is part of this.

by Anonymousreply 595September 10, 2022 4:46 PM

Della, R595: BBC just reported the same thing. The invitation to the Sussexes came through Kensington Palace, which is the new Prince and Princess of Wales.

God, I admire their guts, enduring those two for appearances sake.

It is so much more than they deserve.

by Anonymousreply 596September 10, 2022 4:47 PM

It sounds like the climate of Harry and William has changed. The BBC said that there may be a role for Harry and Meghan - helping with some of the Commonwealth countries. And that they are good at it. Quit a thaw. And good for William for being the grownup.

And this looks like Archie and Lilibet were surely be Prince and Princess. Win, win.

by Anonymousreply 597September 10, 2022 4:49 PM

I think that was talking head speculation. The rule is you can't be a money maker and a royal.

by Anonymousreply 599September 10, 2022 4:51 PM

I disagree that they are good at it, R597. William and Kate had much more rapport with the people they met.

by Anonymousreply 600September 10, 2022 4:51 PM
