The US just legalized gay sex nationwide in 2003 (and some current SCOTUS justices aren't happy about it and want to overturn it).

Utah is basically a Christian theocratic state. Majority of the politicians in Utah are Mormons. And most of colleges are Mormon affiliated. What prevents the South was becoming like this is the racial and religious diversity. Too many types of Christians too who fight over dogma. Utah is predominantly Mormon and white and thus an echo chamber which makes it an effective Christian state.

The only laws in the US helping gays are federal hate crime laws. Gay was only included after Obama and the Dem Congress was elected because the GOP refused to hate crimes against gays into hate crimes legislation.
