'Don't Worry Darling' Review: "Harry Styles looks totally lost"

You’ve surely heard about Don’t Worry Darling, filmmaker Olivia Wilde’s sophomore feature starring Florence Pugh and pop sensation Harry Styles. The fusillade of rift rumors, leaked messages, process servers, and that A-list showmance has generated nearly as many breathless headlines as the raid on Mar-a-Lago. Lost in the haze has been the film itself, which deserves to be judged on its own merits.

By all outward appearances, Alice (Pugh) and Jack (Styles) are a hot, young, loved-up couple. They live in an immaculately designed home in Victory, California, a 1950s-style desert-oasis community bursting with vibrant colors—courtesy of ace lensman Matthew Libatique—and palm tree-lined streets.

While Jack spends all day at work as a technical engineer for the Victory Project, a hush-hush operation headquartered out in the desert that employs all the town’s men, Alice and the other housewives clean, shop, gab, sip cocktails, take ballet lessons, and always have a nice roast waiting for their men then they return—though, judging by the voracious oral Jack gives her atop their kitchen table, it’s not a roast he’s hungry for.

All the townsfolk are in thrall to Frank (Chris Pine), the handsome, well-coiffed and charismatic architect of the Victory Project who’s fostered a cult of personality. Frank lives in the biggest mansion, is possessed of the most graceful wife (Gemma Chan), has his photos displayed on walls, evangelizes all day on the radio, and, for the men of Victory, is beyond reproach. When he catches Alice and Jack going at it in his bedroom during a party, she locks eyes with him, moaning in ecstasy.

The only person who isn’t buying what Frank is selling (besides the audience) is Margaret (KiKi Layne), who lost her son after breaking the town’s big rule: venturing out into the desert. She begins publicly questioning the established order of Victory, alienating her from Alice, Bunny (Wilde), Peg (Kate Berlant), and their circle of friends—even though Alice, too, is haunted by visions of demon showgirls and flashing corneas. Those waking nightmares only intensify after she witnesses Margaret slit her throat in broad daylight before jumping off the roof of her home, prompting a cleanup crew of men in red uniforms to remove her body, restrain Alice, and sanitize the scene.

Premiering at the Venice Film Festival prior to hitting theaters on Sept. 23, Don’t Worry Darling is more than anything a showcase for Pugh who, as in her previous Midsommar, has mastered the art of embodying gaslit women who slowly unravel. She captures Alice’s torment and rebellion with gusto, as in a scene—arguably the best in the film—where she goes toe-to-toe with Pine at a dinner party.

It is unfortunate, then, that Styles struggles to match her go-for-broke intensity. The musician is like a deer in headlights throughout much of the proceedings, and a scene of him crying in the car following a particularly fiery row with Pugh is littered with more crocodile tears than Charlie Sheen being hauled out of his office by the cops at the end of Wall Street (not to mention, his bastardized British accent is a distraction).

Though it is unfair that Styles, a late-in-the-game replacement for Shia LaBeouf, was paired with an actress as formidable as Pugh in his first leading role, a less demanding one (say, a musical) could have better eased him into things. “Music I’ve done a little longer so I’m a bit more comfortable,” admitted Styles at the film’s Venice press conference. “What I like about acting is I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.”

As Alice, in Truman Show-like fashion, sprints toward the ugly truth, Don’t Worry Darling’s entire narrative collapses, exposing Katie Silberman’s script as a glaringly obvious one with precious little to say about the ever-growing tension between modern-day feminism and incel culture. It also reveals several early scenes, including that kitchen table cunnilingus, to be nothing more than empty misdirection.

We don’t need a separate thread on this movie for the reviews there are already like 30

by Anonymousreply 1September 5, 2022 6:30 PM

Posted a bunch of them in this thread

The absolute kindest reviews of Styles are The Guardian and Vanity Fair who both say they can't decide if he's a good or bad actor yet lol

Poor Harry.

I guess he's not the Golden Boy, after all.

by Anonymousreply 3September 5, 2022 6:44 PM

Deadline: "Don’t Worry Darling is actually quite entertaining if you’re in the mood, even if Wilde’s candy-coated psychological thriller doesn’t rewrite the rules of the genre in any significant way. It is sort of a cross between Get Out, The Stepford Wives and Rosemary’s Baby with a ’50s swinging Rat Pack vibe thrown in for good measure. And maybe even by luck of timing, the shutdown of Roe v Wade by the Supreme Court provides gravitas for an underlying message here of the terror imposed by men controlling women’s bodies in this otherwise fun, if familiar, film. Despite having a prestigious Out of Competition slot for its world premiere today at Venice, this is a commercial movie more than anything else and the New Line Cinema production could do well with audiences."

Variety: "it would be hugely unfair to allow this tempest in a teapot of gossipy turmoil to influence one’s feelings about the movie. If you want to talk about problems related to “Don’t Worry Darling,” you need look no further than at what’s onscreen."

Hollywood Reporter: "The inevitable Big Reveal that occurs when Alice makes a break for it is somewhat novel, though it doesn’t really hold water, like a Black Mirror episode that should have been sent back to the writers’ room for another pass or two. "

He'll get many, many more chances to become the Golden Boy. Generic white guys like him always do.

by Anonymousreply 7September 5, 2022 7:12 PM

The Wrap: "As a director, Wilde does an effective job of provocation, and the movie may stir up its share of worthy conversations if people can move beyond the gossip that threatened to overshadow everything else before the Venice premiere or the Sept. 23 theatrical release. But it feels as if there’s a better movie in here somewhere, lost beneath the wild-eyed freneticism and the unsatisfying exposition. "

Can somebody post some spoilers, please, I don’t feel like watching this dreck? For example, how was the “kitchen table cunnilingus” a “misdirection”? Was it supposed to be a bathtub rimjob?

by Anonymousreply 9September 5, 2022 7:15 PM

Poor Harry

by Anonymousreply 10September 5, 2022 7:19 PM

Don’t quit your day job, Haz.

by Anonymousreply 11September 5, 2022 7:20 PM

This is from the Variety review: "But it does have a big twist, which I will, of course, not reveal. I’ll just say that it’s a blend of “Squid Game” and Shyamalan, that it wants to spin your head but may leave you scratching it, and that it’s hooked to Harry Styles being cast, for one section, as a runty unattractive geek, which (surprise) is not exactly convincing. "

From the Hollywood Reporter review: "While Wilde has cited mind-benders like Inception, The Matrix and The Truman Show as inspirations, only the last of those comes to mind while watching, alongside The Stepford Wives. "

From the Wrap review: "To say that “Don’t Worry Darling” is a mixture of “The Stepford Wives” and “Get Out” is both accurate and deeply misleading. It’s accurate because Olivia Wilde’s satiric and somewhat frantic psychological thriller does borrow from films like “Stepford,” where an idealized community is one in which the women are dolls designed for male satisfaction, and “Get Out,” which uses horror trappings to grapple with timely issues of power and privilege. But it’s misleading because there’s another film to which “Don’t Worry Darling” owes even more than it does to those two – but to even mention the other film’s name would be to give away a crucial plot twist that happens late in the film and changes everything."

From those clues, I'm going to guess they're modern women being brainwashed to act like perfect 50s housewives for men who are incels but get to play being 50s style breadwinners (and wonderful lovers?)...and maybe it's being broadcast or observed by others (other incels? Conservatives?).

by Anonymousreply 12September 5, 2022 7:21 PM

R12, good guess, the movie that cannot be mentioned - The Truman Show?

by Anonymousreply 13September 5, 2022 7:25 PM

Don’t worry, Harry.

The check cleared.

by Anonymousreply 14September 5, 2022 7:27 PM

r13, that's what I figured, since the HR specifically did mention it, but The Wrap noticeably didn't while mentioning others (and saying there was one it couldn't).

by Anonymousreply 15September 5, 2022 7:29 PM

I like how Indiewire's review points out Pugh and Pine are the only good things in it (unsurprisingly).

"That said, the long-simmering reveal packs real shock value, almost enough to obscure how ludicrous it is. (No spoilers, but it’s the pure viciousness of its machinations that are really surprising; audiences will also likely remember them as being the film’s most upsetting and cheapest plot points.) On its face, it’s the sort of third-act whammy that will engender plenty of chatter, but it won’t stand up to even the most general of post-screening ruminations.

Poke one hole in the attempted logic of “Don’t Worry Darling,” and you’ll find three more open right up. The rules of this world cease to make sense and, even worse, their intentions appear to be borne of hideous misunderstanding and misreading. In the months leading to the film’s release, Wilde has talked about everything from its influences (“The Truman Show,” “The Matrix,” “Inception” — stop! It’s enough to spoil the damn thing before the credits go up) to her desire to show “female pleasure” on screen in new ways. But viewed through the context of those inescapable talking points, “Don’t Worry Darling” reads as both obvious and offensive."

So lemme guess… this is another “white men are evil” racist piece of shit movie for the woke age? Olivia should be banished to the middle east where she wouldn’t have it so good. In fact, i think she’d be stoned to death for being such a cheating whore.

by Anonymousreply 17September 5, 2022 7:40 PM

r17 She is hot, though.

by Anonymousreply 18September 5, 2022 7:43 PM

r17 It's about men in general, I don't know why you need to drag race into every discussion like the constantly-triggered race baiter that you are.

by Anonymousreply 19September 5, 2022 7:45 PM

Please someone reveal this.....no intention of watching this claptrap

by Anonymousreply 20September 5, 2022 7:49 PM

Building on the earlier guess in this thread (which seems likely) and some of the reviews, it sounds like there’s some aspect of cruelty to the twist - maybe that’s what makes Harry going down on Flo a misdirection? Maybe that also explains why Flo seems to be particularly annoyed with Olivia selling the film as being about female pleasure? Something like, the women brainwashed and placed in this incel reality show world were specifically chosen as punishment? A little closer to a Handmaid’s Tale kind of thing? Or maybe they’re not real human beings and are some kind of robots?

by Anonymousreply 21September 5, 2022 7:58 PM

r20, the only people who've seen it so far are the ones at the Venice Film Festival, and I hope those people have better things to do than race to DL to comment. Guesses are probably the best we're going to get right now.

by Anonymousreply 22September 5, 2022 8:00 PM

Now you know why I quit the movie.

And I wasn't fired.

That is a LIE.

by Anonymousreply 23September 5, 2022 8:21 PM

The Independent praises Florence and calls Harry, “wooden”.

Florence “wipes the floor with him in their every encounter”.

R19. You’re too dumb to have a real conversation with. Wake up from woke, f face.

by Anonymousreply 25September 5, 2022 10:29 PM

I've seen the trailer several times. It reminds me of The Stepford wives. I'm not sure I will see it.

I will see Honk if you Love Jesus is spite of it's poor reviews. It looks fun.

by Anonymousreply 26September 5, 2022 10:36 PM

Pugh looks like a thumb. I just can't believe that's what's passing for a movie star these days. Harry is not a film actor and not movie star material either. This could ruin his singing gig so he better confine his non-musical screen time to late night talk shows.

by Anonymousreply 27September 5, 2022 10:40 PM

Fake catfights to generate headlines for this shitty tripe, and they succeeded. Why would Livvie filmed herself begging Shia and then badmouthed him later? It's all for attention and Shia is in cahoots with her.

by Anonymousreply 28September 5, 2022 10:56 PM

If this was all for attention, Harry and Olivia wouldn’t have been ignoring each other. That was awkward as hell and unexpected.

by Anonymousreply 29September 5, 2022 11:01 PM

r28 That's just stupid. Yeah, she made herself look like a liar and a moron for attention.

by Anonymousreply 30September 5, 2022 11:33 PM

[quote] Kitchen table cunnilingus a “misdirection”

Might she got a cock instead of a pussy? So Harry's character is a cocksucker.

by Anonymousreply 31September 6, 2022 12:31 AM

R5, it seems, mainly watches pron 🙄

Is this a remake or reimagining of The Stepford Wives?

by Anonymousreply 32September 6, 2022 12:40 AM

Olivia wants Shia to perform cunnilingus on her on the kitchen table.

by Anonymousreply 33September 6, 2022 1:20 AM

"Florence “wipes the floor with him in their every encounter”.

Fortunately, no one is looking at her.

by Anonymousreply 34September 6, 2022 1:32 AM

R7: This is what happens when a non-actor sleeps his way into movies. Still he’s got nothing to worry about it. Hollywood loves mediocre white boys so he’ll get plenty of chances to make it right. However, this hopefully will be the end for Olivia Wilde.

by Anonymousreply 35September 6, 2022 1:38 AM

I cannot believe the leading actress that all of the young women admire is a dollar tree Jennifer Lawrence.

by Anonymousreply 36September 6, 2022 1:52 AM

Going back to this: "long-simmering reveal packs real shock value, almost enough to obscure how ludicrous it is. (No spoilers, but it’s the pure viciousness of its machinations that are really surprising; audiences will also likely remember them as being the film’s most upsetting and cheapest plot points).

I'm going to extend my guess that these are women who signed up for a reality show, only to end up being brainwashed and turned into dutiful wives/sex slaves for these incel men, and it's being broadcast Truman Show style. (Or maybe they were straight up sex trafficked and ended up on this Truman Show-style show.)

by Anonymousreply 37September 6, 2022 2:21 AM

[quote] long-simmering reveal packs real shock value, almost enough to obscure how ludicrous it is.

MORE! MORE!!

I love hearing bad reviews about this movie.

It's a total train wreck.

by Anonymousreply 38September 7, 2022 5:38 AM

Sorry, Harry.

Your acting career is over before it even began.

by Anonymousreply 39September 7, 2022 4:22 PM

Judging from the trailer for his other movie, expect more reviews like this

by Anonymousreply 40September 7, 2022 5:12 PM

Chris Pine should have punched Harry in the face.

by Anonymousreply 41September 8, 2022 1:13 AM

R36 I think a new DL trope was just coined

by Anonymousreply 42September 8, 2022 6:07 AM

According to the original script, the men faked the women's deaths and put them into comas, then they are put into a computer simulation while their actual bodies are atrophying in a hospital bed. But then Olivia tried to make it into a Girl Power via female ejaculation movie so who knows what is going on.

by Anonymousreply 43September 8, 2022 6:50 AM

Every time I look at the Rotten Tomatoes score, it's sinking lower in the 40s.

[quote]It is sort of a cross between Get Out, The Stepford Wives and Rosemary’s Baby

It looked shockingly derivative, so I'm not surprised to read it's a Ryan Murphy-style mishmash of earlier, better movies. (Well...The Stepford Wives wasn't a good movie, but the novel was an amusing little speed-read.)

by Anonymousreply 44September 8, 2022 6:58 AM

R39: Maybe but keep in mind he's a white boy with a large fanbase. I think he'll get at least four more films.

by Anonymousreply 45September 8, 2022 11:42 AM

The original script was written by Dick Van Dyke's grandsons. Then Olivia hired another Dyke to rewrite it, and the rest is...

by Anonymousreply 46September 16, 2022 7:39 AM

The garbage just keeps flowing.

by Anonymousreply 48September 23, 2022 12:30 PM

We guessed about the twist earlier. Here's a full summary: it's a virtual reality simulation thing. The incels and men who feel emasculated by their women have hijacked them into this simulation and reprogrammed them. When the men are going off to work, it's when they're unplugging and going back to their jobs in the real world to pay for this. Pretty much what you'd expect.
