I like minimalist clean line modern stuff. Orange, red, blue, or beige. Link your ideas please…
I furnished my home from Room & Board, OP. You're off to a good start. Stick to a neutral beige. You can use any accent colors you want, and change them easily whenever you get tired of them. I have the one linked below. Super comfortable -and that matters a lot.

Buy a vintage, made in the US, kiln-dried wood sofa and get it reupholstered.

But I like Modern
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 4, 2022 7:17 PM |
I own several R&B pieces, purchased over the last 15 years or so, and all still look and function like they did the day they were delivered.
Contrast that with other pieces purchased at purportedly high-end furniture suppliers like RH and Williams-Sonama (and its subsidiaries). I've had sundry issues with upholstery, construction, damage during delivery, general quality, and embarked on endless fiascos to get those companies to correct these errors.
RH is the absolute worst of them. Williams-Sonoma/PB/West Elm can be hit-or-miss, but at least when they miss, they will make it right (though it might take a year or more). Crate & Barrel is generally good though their styles can be bit trendy and can soon look dated.
Skip the hassle and go with Room & Board.

R&B is hard to beat at its price point for modern furniture

With its refined honey and brown colors, the low, floating silhouette of the Envergure sofa rests on a chestnut-colored wooden platform. Its fine, smooth leather and its pure lines add to its elegance and make it a refined and inviting sofa.

I'm super picky when it comes to furniture quality. For the money, you can't beat Room and Board. I've had two over the past 15 years and both held up extremely well. My leather metro sectional Ian and had a Metro fabric sofa and chair. One I just gave to a family member last week as I redecorated with Arhaus stuff. More expensive but great, great stuff. Spend the most on the rooms you use everyday. And then spend the most on the pieces you will sit on every day. Save on end tables and accent chairs until you can afford to upgrade those. It's how I have done it over the years and it I have been pleased. I have gone the vintage, reupholster route and it allows you to totally customer and have some fun. But it's never as comfy and sturdy as I like. And that is the most important thing for an every day sofa.

OP- I never refer to IT as a sofa. I call it a
COUCH.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 17, 2022 12:50 AM |
I've done about 8 months of research lately while trying to find a couch that I'd be happy to spend thousands of dollars on without first testing it out. After a while, they do start to look the same. Every time I was about to finalize my decision, I would hold back and read more reviews. Every time , I decided to wait a little longer. I live 4.5 hours to the closest large city where I could actually sit on a couch -with nothing but blips on the map in between. Everything would have to be shipped to the middle of nowhere adding a significant sum to the purchase. That also complicates the purchase, because there is really no control over the trucking company and if they called before hand, etc. We can't even get FedEx overnight packages here, although all vendors are happy to offer it and charge you for it. It just will not arrive that quickly. It's been a mentally exhausting search. I almost started a thread on here so many times.
Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are not helpful in sparsely populated areas- very few, if any, offerings. I hold out more hope for an estate sale that I travel to.
Yes! R4 "Buy a vintage, made in the US, kiln-dried wood sofa and get it reupholstered.
I came across a site that does that for you and ships the couch to you. I love the idea. Sweet Modern in Akron, OH
R27 Roger & Chris have terrible reviews (especially regarding customer service, which is pretty important in a custom made couch) and are simply a middle man for North Carolina makers. They've done a decent job of making folks think they are superior craftsmen or designers. They are not.
When you really start digging there are untold number of couch websites and "custom" couch makers and purveyors. It's all the same crap made in the same few factories in NC. They best advice I found was from Jeff Frank, in industry insider. He has 2 websites,: insidersguidetofurniture.com and furnitureblog.simplicitysofas.com Both have a lot of helpful info, but according to him the key is more about the foam used in the cushions than the frame. Frames are important, of course, but tend to be fairly standard and are usually not the thing to break down. The cushions are. He talks about density vs firmness (not even close to the same thing) and the minimum density you should look for. A good manufacturer should be able to tell you the density of the foam used and it should 2.2 or higher. He dives deep into leather - types, whether it is worth the investment, etc. Not super snazzy website but loaded with good info that appears to be just there for the reading (i.e. not trying to sell you anything).
I'm gravitating towards Stickley, or a Ekornes of Norway.

I got rid of a bunch of furniture by googling for organizations that work with refugees.
They use donated furniture for the apartments that these refugees stay in.
They may not come take everything thing at once, but they did eventually take everything, including a sofa, two coffee tables, living room chair, banquet table, two side tables, two lamps

I own the Camden Sofa from CB2. It's very stylish and, I think, the most comfortable of their sofas with a great balance between firm and soft. However, like most modern styled sofas, it's fairly low back and even though it doesn't look as cool, I'm changing things up with a high back sofa instead.
That's one thing I'd advise. Don't let pushy sales people hassle you. If you find a sofa you really like, sit in it for at least 10-15 minutes. I made the mistake of only sitting in the Camden for a few mins and the fact that the back was a little too low for me never clicked until the sofa arrived. That said, if you don't mind a slightly lower back, you like a medium firmness and a sleek modern look, the Camden is a good deal.

R123 - I replaced my CB2 Camden with the Lounge sofa line from Crate & Barrell. In person it's actually a little more stylish than it looks in person and the leather is BUTTERY soft. This time I actually spent an hour sitting in the sofa in store and it was the one for me. Only downside is the wait time -- I ordered in November. I won't be taking delivery until April.
For me, it was the perfect balance of firm and soft -- supportive, but not stiff. Luxuriously soft, but not flimsy.

Those reclining sofas look like bags of trash piled up on the curb. Especially when they're made of black leather. They're the lowest of the low. You can search through interior design magazines and you'll never see one, yet they're in 90% of lower end American homes.

r143, sit in one for, say, half an hour. They had them in the lobby of a place where I worked, and whenever I sat in one for more than a couple of minutes, I found myself shifting my body to find a comfortable position. I am 5'7", and weighed 160 at the time.

r141 If you get any sort of two-part sofa, make sure there's hardware underneath to attach them, as the pieces tend to separate otherwise when anyone sits down. This goes double for a big dog.

OP, I bought my 'lifetime purchase' sofa about 14 yrs ago from RB. I had it narrowed down to Andre and one other one. A friend with impeccable taste said "get the Andre" and he was right. Its' classic mid-century btw. I like that it's all one piece except for the two cushions on the 'seat.' It does show signs of wear and tear after all this time, but I have always lined it with throws and small blankets , so it would be worse had I not. And it's not 'slouchy.' I'm just over six feet tall and I never find myself sinking down into it for back support.
Do not get a couch with a strong color. That's what throw pillows and the like are for, those 'pops of color.' as David Bromstad says in just about every episode of whatever show he is hosting. Mine is a muted green, think eucalyptus. And green is my favorite color since I was eight.
And if it works for your space, try not to position it against a wall. Floating it is almost always the way to go.
And WHET to Mitchell Gold?

Havertys still has good quality furniture that last for a while.

OP if you click on the Andre link above, make sure you click 76". You'll see the proportions change right away. That is the one I got.

Also, make sure you get a sofa that’s tall enough. My boyfriend had a sofa that was low to the ground and the pressure on my lower back caused lower back and hip pain.

lots of good advice. I'm not the OP but I'm also looking for a new couch.

OP- Ya’ll?
I guess you’re either black or a white southerner.

Mitchell Gold expensive, but it's top quality. I can last for many years. If you buy a cheaper sofa, you'll end up replacing it numerous times. In 2006, I bought at Mitch Gold sofa with club chairs. I still have them. They're in great condition.

We last bought a sofa in 2008 - a Room & Board one that lasted until just this year.
The choices to replace it are pretty sad.

CB2 is really meant for very small urban apartments/spaces, and C&B is, like Room and Board, for regular size spaces.
And of course Restoration Hardware is for McMansions - their furniture is huge.

They do, but I was disappointed at what we saw and how it compared to our old R&B couch. Far puffier, less firm and more expensive.

[R56], you can't go wrong with Ekornes. Our Stressless Stella has been a fantastic replacement for a really disappointing BoConcept sectional (which became uncomfortable within months, with frayed upholstery).

[quote] Doesn't ANYONE have a suggestion in the $500 range?
Nothing in that range exists. Even a basic one at a discount store is usually at least 700 now.
For $500 or less you have to buy used online. Or maybe get lucky at a thrift shop or in a clearance section.

Room and Board? Sounds expensive. I get from Arona, you make payments every weeks. It’s real cheap.

Orange, no please. Get orange throw pillows. My parents had an orange couch when they got married in the 70's, and then we had it in the 80's too when it was horrible.
