All these Disney live-action remakes have been unnecessary and soulless cash grabs using big Hollywood celebrities to pique interest. Instead of making more faithful adaptations of the source material which would be different, they simply retell the animated adaptation. The Broadway musical adaptations by Disney show more creativity and deviation from the original animated films.

The original animated film is a work of art. The early Walt era movies were basically crafted to test the limits of animation. They weren't made completely for-profit but to prove animation as a legitimate art medium. They looked like moving paintings. Fantasia and Pinocchio even weren't box office hits and Disney struggled to recover their losses. Dumbo and Bambi were more successful but Walt Disney's visions were always very ambitious. Alice in Wonderland and Sleeping Beauty both flopped and took a decade to become cult classics. Imagine if Fantasia was a success, animation in America would probably be more like Japan, Italy or France where animated films for mature audiences are normalized.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 6, 2022 3:04 AM |
All that is true, R50, but Disney's first animated feature-length film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," was an enormous success.

The trailer linked to at R53 is indeed pretty terrible. I saw another one that featured Pinocchio much more prominently. See below.
That said, I don't understand the comment that this trailer features "what looks to be a female version of Pinocchio." We only get a glimpse of him at the every end of the trailer, and he doesn't look female to me. Nor does he look to be female in the other trailer.

Pinocchio escapes Stromboli's cage by lying, lying, lying, and lying some more until his nose grows long enough to reach a keyring hanging on the wall. Salvation through deceit is the moral of this new Pinocchio, who doesn't turn into a real boy at the end because what's inside is all that really matters, which turns out to be as much deceit as needed to gain what he wanted. His lying becomes a super-power. Lovely moral, isn't it?

No matter how many times you keep repeating such ignorant statements, they are not true. First of all, "white people" have not "colonized" Italy over the years, and anyway, are you trying to say that darker-skinned people haven't done the same thing? And, of course, norther Italians have historically been much fairer than southern Italians.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | September 17, 2022 5:16 PM |

[quote]If you want to remain ignorant, that’s on you. Most Italians looked Arab. They didn’t look white outside of some Northern towns.
So you keep insisting this is true, and that it changed because (you think) ONLY fairer-skinned, fairer-haired people moved to Italy and intermarried with the natives over the decades? Do you know how stupid that makes you sound?
According to you, how far back do we have to go to a time when "most Italians looked Arab?" Because, for example, in photographs of Verdi and Puccini from the late 19th and early 20th century, they certainly don't look dark-skinned or "Arab." And you can't get much more Italian than Verdi and Puccini.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | September 17, 2022 5:56 PM |
[quote] And, of course, norther Italians have historically been much fairer than southern Italians.
That's because Northern Italians inter-married with Northern Europeans, and Southern Italians inter-married with Middle Easterners and North Africans.
It only had to do with proximity and geography.
DUH.
[quote] It's why northern italians hate southern italians. Lazy mixed race people.

Verdi was from Parma, very high up North of Italy.
Puccini was from Lucca, also high up North in Italy.
“ They didn’t look white outside of some Northern towns.”
Clearly you didn’t read where I said the high North was where the whiter Italians were.
Also, the white Italians still had a very specific look to them. They didn’t look like many of the people who are “Italian” today. They had dark eyes with specific features, typically a very specific nose. Italian noses is something we’ve said on here and you wanted to argue that also. Your arguments don’t change history.

Um, in Northern climates in Europe with little sun much of the year, people had fairer skin, and in more southerly climates, with more sun, generally people had darker skin. It doesn't make them negores, that is a different race. Nor does it mean they intermarried with negroes, since then they would look more like negores, and they don't, they look like darker-skinner Europeans.
