Chris Rock: ‘Ugly’ Will Smith impersonated ‘a perfect person for 30 years’
Chris Rock described Will Smith as “just as ugly as the rest of us.”
The comedian — who is on a UK tour with Dave Chappelle — made the comment during a sold-out show at Liverpool’s M&S Arena when Chappelle asked him about the infamous Oscars slap.
“Did that s–t hurt?” Chappelle cheekily inquired, according to the Daily Mail.
“Goddamn right … the motherf–ker hit me over a bulls–t joke, the nicest joke I ever told,” Rock responded.
“Will did the impression of a perfect person for 30 years, and he ripped his mask off and showed us he was as ugly as the rest of us,” he continued. “Whatever the consequences are … I hope he doesn’t put his mask back on again and lets his real face breathe. I see myself in both men.”

Chris Rock hit on exactly the reason I always disliked Will Smith.
Smith really has been impersonating the perfect person for decades, impersonating so hard you can see the hurt behind it. It's sad that that's what it takes to be the perfect Black man White men like, and I can't imagine what keeping up that charade of goofy, grinning, get-along good guy costs. Still, if that's his bread and butter and has made him and a narrowly talented wife some $400M, and a license to print more, and a shield against all criticism, he might keep in mind his 30 years of practice and bite his tongue and keep his hand in his pocket before attacking a black comedian whose nothing joke made him snap.

He needs to address his anger issues privately and eventually, privately apologize to Rock, SINCERELY.
But if he’s anything like other men I’ve met with rage issues, that’s never gonna happen.
People like this never believe they did anything wrong, when they freak out and physically go after other people.
As a matter of fact, most of them forget it even ever happened, and expect everyone else around them to do exactly the same.
The ONLY reason this is different, is because a camera was pointed on stage, on a live broadcast, while millions around the globe were watching.
I can almost guarantee you he is a fucking nightmare behind closed doors.

I love Chris Rock because he's got these types of insights. Being a movie star is an unnatural state. Being a moviestar is an enormous amount of pressure for 3 decades and it fascinates Smith cracked at the zenith of his career so publicly.
PS. There is good reason why Jada Smith is not a moviestar and is only hired because of her marriage to Will Smith.

I've always admired Chris Rock for the thought and careful consideration of his work. Some big profiles of him have made much if his long process if refining jokes and narrative and performance, a relentless going back and reworking and reworking again. It's not altogether uncommon among comedians but his colleagues have been more than a little impressed at the same, not relying on past laurels but more as a process of starting over each time we each tour, eqch new set of material.
I think his response to the Smith slap, unfolding as it has reflects the same quite serious approach to his comedy. If there's a comedian who understands that comedy turns on unveiling a truth it's Rock. And see the same it seems when he's not being so funny.

Good response. Chris Rock is smart. Will is ambitious. Agree with the above that the act always seemed to be barely concealing the misery underneath. Closeted gay man pretending his life is ok - it all fell apart when the conflicting demons (loyal, straight husband vs. closeted gay man) broke and he didn’t know what two do logically. The confusion over what role he should play could be seen in his actions - he decided he needed to “act” like the loyal, butch husband and instead overreacted and ruined his career.
It’s a sick life - no sane, happy person would want it.

Right, R47. I was surprised by how little attention his choice of a slap received. What man slaps another man? A pillow fight gone nasty at a drag queen sleepover? A Looney Tunes glove slap - extra points for French accent and a white gñove?
It's not exactly among the first 5 or 10 acts of aggression I imagine from a threatened/challenged straight man.

A sissy slap is an act of unprovoked violence just as a knockout punch is. This physical act of violence was immediately followed with threats screamed at full volume.
Someone explained in another thread that this incident is an example of workplace violence, and typically, management didn't correct it.
This was not just a water cooler unscripted moment, it was an act of career suicide from a high profile entertainer.
Smith charges the stage? Assaults a peer? That should be the end of it.
The stage curtain comes down, the broadcast goes to commercials and the Smiths get removed.
Cancellation or postponement of the ceremony is an option.
Suppose Chris Rock was not a level headed person and decided to choke Smith out...would that satisfy everyone's curiosity?
But now you know, no one is permitted onstage unless accepting an award or giving one out.
There can be no exception made for anyone.

Will Smith has built up a lot of good will from the three decades he's worked in the entertainment industry. He's made a lot of money for the entertainment industry and his colleagues wanted to support him.
He used up all his good will in that one moment. His wife, has no good will. She's got a reputation for bad and entitled behavior. She's hired because her husband is or was a high profile movie star.

With the revelations that had already come out about Mr and Mrs Smith and their extra-curricular activities over the course of last year, Mr Smith probably thought he had to DO something. Mrs Smith never lifted a finger to stop him. They're both CUNTS.
With Chris Rock in the ascendancy now and with Chappelle and everyone standing with him we'll see how it goes for Mr and Mrs Smith in the future. They probably have enough money to dick around doing nothing for the rest of their lives and buy the kids way out of jail and into rehab when it comes to that (because it will).

[QUOTE]As said above the ironic part is most heterosexual men would punch, the slap made Will look even more ridiculous and like his wife wears the pants.
I suspect Smith had some calculus going on in his mind. He trained to be Muhammad Ali, the GOAT boxer and he KNEW how to deliver damaging, high velocity punches to opponents, never mind "sucker slapping" a much smaller man, a comic. Somewhere between his laughter at the joke and Jada's scowl, Smith got propelled. Here he was going up there to knock Rock's block off and teach him a lesson when he probably realized his trained punch could land Rock in the hospital with grievous injuries or worse. Hence the open slap.
Smith is just a self-regarding, useless MOFO with an even more useless and highly embarrassing family.

Hah! I was hoping that Rock would be asked to host the AAs and he'd turn them down.
The fucking nerve of the AMPAS. The very institution and audience that was party to a crime asked the victim/survivor to rescue them. It would absolve them if Rock agreed to host or appear in any capacity.
Rock knew that and he told them to go to hell.
Good.
Yeah, I know the AMPAS asked Rock to host knowing he probably would turn them down; that they had to be on record as making the gesture. But that they put themselves in that position in the first place and had to give Rock the opportunity to tell them to fuck-off, tickles me.
Rock's observations during his act haven't always landed with me, but most of them have, and it was always obvious to me, throughout his career, that he is very smart.

He isn't working on a settlement. He's going to whine about what happened that night for the next 30 years, and it's going to backfire on him sooner rather than later. He'll be like Jackie Mason, who wouldn't shut up about the "finger" incident on Ed Sullivan.
The people who got overly worked up about the slap at the time are already starting to forget why they cared so much, and after next year's Oscars go off without another incident, even more people will start to forget and move on. It helps that a lot of the people online who pretended to be traumatized and enraged were trolls trying to use the event to push a certain agenda, or just rile people up. (Just as I typed that, r81 shows up to prove my point.)

People forget that Chris Rock has a history of going after others for no reason other than what appears to be a massive, well-preserved chip on his shoulder. Even after he got slapped, he made some crack about the winners he announced, calling one of them "some white guy" instead of saying his name, and the guy wasn't even white. He's not sympathetic in the industry.
He's probably hailed as a hero among comedians these days, many of whom were absolutely certain that they were going to get assaulted 24/7 because of what Will Smith did, because no one can see an event like this without internalizing it and making it all about themselves anymore, and indulging in their own personal persecution fantasies.

R92 that doesn’t really matter since Will was still getting move deals after the slap. His career is fine because he remains an international star. I was in Eastern Europe (not Russia). Mrs Smith is too hostile to be attractive, radiates hostility even with a million dollar smile on her face.
This streamed for free a few months ago. This film was a flop when it was released but it is not worse than BAPS. BAPS flopped and is dreadful but Halle Berry went on to stardom.
Jada played the lead character and maybe featured all of ten minutes in it.
Reason being? She pissed off the movie producers so completely her screen time was whittled down to nothing.
Side note, Will Smiths alleged boyfriend is also in this film

Tiffany Haddish is making Jada look better by comparison.

I liked Jada in Gotham and thought she was perfect for the role and lit up the screen when she was on it.
Sue me.

Chapelle said the comment about Will being a perfect person. Not Rock.

Smith has seen other black people behave violently and boorishly, so he thought he'd cosplay as the "authentic black man" he likes to pretend to be, but it all backfired.
Smith is a narcissistic loon who overplayed his hand. It is shocking to me they didn't have him escorted out that very moment.
I can assure you there will be far fewer black faces on next year's show, although fewer and fewer people tune in to this nonsense. Sad. It used to be fun and glamorous.

Does Will have any job offers, or has everything dried up?

All his projects are shelved

I liked Jada in that Michael Mann film with Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise.
But otherwise she seems like a real monstrella!

I liked her in The Matrix films

Can not stand her in the Matrix, bad acting.
The Matrix was a gift.
Will Smith turned down Neo, (bad move) and wifey was gifted a role in the sequels.

I didn’t know he was considered for Neo role. I’m glad he turned it down or may never watch the films again

He was the filmmakers first choice, strange to learn this in hindsight.

Never really liked Will Smith or his insufferable family…here’s hoping that his career never gets back on track.
The family’s career will suffer too…good.

^Unlike you I wish Willow continued success in music. Caught Willlow’s set at Lollapalooza this year and had a blast
