There is that guy who likes her. We last see him all sad at her wedding. I feel they should have reunited the two.
Muriel's Wedding----love it but one thing bugs me

You think she's going to go back to that when after she got with this?

His name was Bruce. When she is making out with him Rhonda becomes paralyzed. The guy had bad luck.

He was sweet but he disappeared from the plot.
This wonderful movie ended with lots of unresolved situations.

He was into fat chicks. He was a freak.

I loved that they didn’t end up together. I hate those movies where the girl gets the dorky pathetic guy as a consolation prize. (This would have been the original ending to Pretty in Pink except Molly Ringwood had a crush on Andrew McCarthy and didn’t think her character should end up with Duckie)
Btw in the musical they do end up together so maybe you should check it out if it ever comes to your town.

The thing that bugs me is that this movie is so clever and witty but everything the director made since was a failure.

Toni Collette's physical transformation is amazing and she does it all with her face.
She's so ugly at the beginning sticking her face out in a gawky way.
Then at the wedding she's just beautiful.
Great actress.

Toni Collette was at her most beautiful driving away in the taxi at the end of the movie. Freedom.
PJ Hogan directed My Best Friend’s Wedding which immediately entered the romantic comedy pantheon.

R1 The sad thing is he now looks so desiccated as he sunk back into heterosexual domesticity with a pushy wife..

I thought this was about datalounge webmistress Muriel’s wedding.

Hogan was attached to direct a film of Angels in America for a while. Never happened.

PJ Hogan and his wife Jocelyn Morehouse pretty much gave up their careers to look after their severely autistic children.

I wonder what that would have been like.
Hogan's 'Muriel's Wedding has a camp sensibility but it's a refined camp sensibility compared to the ghastly, vulgar, tackiness evident in everything by fellow-Australian Baz Lurman.
Hogan acted as the 'ghost-writer' and 'ghost-director' of this other camp movie which was supposed to be funny but which seemed to fail in every department. (The rumour is that Katie Winslet insisted it be an all-female production).

In Muriel’s Wedding the Musical, Muriel marries a gay Russian swimmer instead of a South African and then ends up with Bryce. Muriel was also played by Kim of Kath & Kim’s daughter, she was really good.

She's a belter like her mother— but I think heard a recent story that she's picked up the fad of being "Queer".

R17 yes she is now she’s a they.

Muriel's happy ending is supposed to be her being an empowered free spirit. Her having a happy ending with a man would signify that a woman can only be happy and empowered when a man wants to be with her.

Yeah I'm disappointed to hear the musical ends with Muriel ending up with a dude. The movie has THE perfect ending. Her and Rhoda saying goodbye to Porpoise Spit and then we get the long shot on their faces in the backseat of the taxi as it leaves town, and Toni plays it like the end of The Graduate - you can see all kinds of mixed emotions crossing her face in that moment. It is, like the film itself, melancholy and complicated. What a perfect movie this is. Now you all have me wanting to watch it for the five thousandth time.

Sorry I meant "Rhonda" not Rhoda haha

That would have been a total cop put OP. Films don't have to end with the bullshit, feelgood happily ever after that Hollywood is adamant to pimp out to cinema goers.

I just always feel bad for Bryce at the wedding. He looks so sad.

R27 Brice had a twisted mouth but was still cute despite it.
I think the movie is suggesting that both Brice and Muriel were misfits. The movie went to concentrate on Muriel and unfortunately Brice's story was ignored.
