HGTV's "Love It or List It"—team Hilary or David?

Given that a new season is getting released next week... I tend to root for Hilary and her makeovers because she tends to gets more ire from the homeowners, though she seems to win out more overall than David does. I enjoy David's presence on the show though and find him strangely sexy despite his abject lack of conventionally-attractive features (his body aside, which is quite fit). Also, Hilary looks fucking incredible for her age (she turned 71 yesterday!)

The show is just too predictable. Every frau wants the same thing done to her house ( open concept, etc); they always find something wrong with the foundation, plumbing, etc. adding to the expense; David's third house is ideal, but over budget; when discussing which house to take, the homeowners talk highly about one of them, then always choose the other. Mix it up, script writers. I've never seen a show which is so lazily written.

I hate this fucking show.

Fortunately, since my sister now takes care of Mother, I no longer have to see it.

I am still shocked - SHOCKED - that whatisface is practicing heterosexuality.

by Anonymousreply 2September 2, 2022 12:50 PM

R2 there was a DL thread some time ago where the OP referred to David as the "Love It or List It fuck piece" which I thought was hilarious. He pings to high heaven, despite being apparently married to a woman.

by Anonymousreply 3September 2, 2022 4:28 PM

The rules need to be changed for it to be a better show. For every dollar they go over budget on a possible new house, Hillary should have that added to her budget.

And David’s gayness can be seen from space.

by Anonymousreply 4September 2, 2022 4:41 PM

One of the worst "first-world, white person's problems" programs on television. The stupidity of NOT telling the homeowners that the first issue is that they are hoarders/slobs - put away your toys and more and you'll have living space. The second issue, the moron designer who makes decisions about a reno and THEN consults with the contractor and is always SHOCKED, SHOCKED I SAY that there's a complication and it will cost $10K to fix. Oh nose, she whines, she'll have to tell the owners, no new entryway/bathroom, washer/dryer room!

And then that obnoxious realtor - he's just awful. Straight or gay, I do not care... he's rude.

Should I feel better as an American that Canadians are as fat, lazy, and self-absorbed as U.S. citizens or is it a sign that the world is getting ready to collapse?

Top Ten stupidest program on HGTV and that's saying A LOT for such a crappy network.

by Anonymousreply 5September 2, 2022 4:48 PM

R5 this show hasn’t been filmed in Canada for years. They film in Raleigh/Durham, so those are our own fatties.

Hilary

by Anonymousreply 7September 2, 2022 5:14 PM

during the pandemic they moved the show back to Canada where even the houses before Hillary got to them were expensive as fuck

If you want to see expensive houses, check out Love it or List it: Vancouver.

In that series the homeowners are typically living in a shoebox and want more rooms/refresh, while considering moving to another dreary home way out in the sticks for a price ranging between $1.7 - $2.2 million. Actually makes Toronto real estate look cheap.

I am surprised so many DLers hate this show. It’s pretty much the only thing on HGTV that I find enjoyable. It’s pure fluff, but it’s entertaining and watchable because of Hilary and David. Definitely miles above the abysmal House Hunters—you wanna talk about insufferable upper-middle-class white fraus? Give that one a watch.

by Anonymousreply 10September 2, 2022 9:11 PM

I like it also, R10. It's very entertaining. About the structural/electrical, etc issues typically found in each episode - aren't those issues required to be remedied by legal bounds, alone? Either that, or disclosed at the time of sale.

by Anonymousreply 11September 2, 2022 9:23 PM

This show is my guilty pleasure. I like both of them and their banter and love to hate (most of) the homeowners. I like when she tells the homeowners their ideas are stupid/unworkable right off the bat. I wish they would do more delving into the construction/ budget process but I’m sure there are a lot of smoke and mirrors that don’t apply to an average non-televised home renovation.

by Anonymousreply 12September 2, 2022 9:30 PM

Agreed R12, though the scope of work that has to go into the houses is large, and the episodes are only around 40 minutes or so with commercials, so there's a limitation to what they can show. Some of these projects would take a month to finish, though it appears they have a big crew working behind-the-scenes, so I think they are able to do it more rapidly. My dad was a contractor and operated his own carpentry/renovation business, so I grew up around this sort of thing (and at times worked for him when I was a teenager/young adult), so I have familiarity with what goes into it.

I sort of wish there were extended episodes where they were able to show more of the demolition and construction process on Hilary's redesigns/renovations, but it wouldn't balance proportionately to David's side of the job, which frankly isn't as interesting—he's just searching for and showing houses. Hilary and crew have the more interesting job IMO

by Anonymousreply 13September 2, 2022 9:42 PM

I totally agree, R13. His part is way less interesting, but I like him and Hilary together. The best ones for him are where the homeowners have some impossible demand. But the stakes are always low because they can just not buy any of the houses he shows them.

It still throws me for a loop that Hilary was in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"

The season premiere that came out this week featured two of the most aloof lesbians I have ever seen. They brought the episode down with their complete and utter lack of reaction to anything that was going on around them. It was an awful episode.

by Anonymousreply 16September 9, 2022 5:25 AM

Haven't watched the show in a few years, but Hilary. I hope they are great friends in real life.

by Anonymousreply 17September 9, 2022 5:32 AM

Hilary has her own show now, doesn't she?

I swear I've seen a couple of episodes online.

by Anonymousreply 18September 9, 2022 5:34 AM

R18 yes, it’s called “Tough Love”, but watching it made me realize how much David does actually contribute to the show. The bitchy rapport they have together is a large part of what makes “Love It or List It” so watchable. I still cannot believe he is allegedly hetero.

by Anonymousreply 19September 9, 2022 5:53 AM

R16, that was an odd episode! The brown haired woman was so incredibly passive aggressive, and the lighter haired woman seemed totally beaten down. It was bizarre. I wonder what their family life is like. I wasn’t surprised by the choice in the end because I felt like the darker haired woman would get her way at all costs. Usually the couples at least can seeeach other’s points of view.

by Anonymousreply 20September 9, 2022 6:24 AM

R20 I know, I felt like I was seeing the tip of an abusive relationship iceberg

by Anonymousreply 21September 9, 2022 8:02 AM

Hilary regularly goes 300% over budget. I'd hit her in the head with a fondue pot. We stopped watching years ago.

by Anonymousreply 22September 9, 2022 9:15 AM

I like the show.

Would lick David's nice lean body from head to toe. I can tell he has a big one and would be fun in bed.

Hilary's face work is disturbing in some episodes. Her work work is always the same—open concept, white and gray and a color close to gray and a tasteful staircase.

Constantly shocked by how expensive Canadian real estate is for tiny houses that sit 6 inches from their neighbors.

by Anonymousreply 23September 9, 2022 9:27 AM

R23 not that shocking of prices unfortunately. Look at every metropolitan area on the US west coast. Utterly insane. They shoot/shot many of the earlier episodes in Toronto, which is also very expensive. Later seasons are in the Raleigh metro in North Carolina, which explains the lesser budgets, though some of the houses there are also quite expensive (though your money will get you a lot further).

by Anonymousreply 24September 9, 2022 9:47 AM

R5 is right. He was even more right when the show was filmed in Canada.

The wife would rant about how "our house just doesn't function" as the camera panned over rooms with no design, no decoration other than being balls deep in children's toys, laundry, and mountains of nasty shoes everywhere. And yet no one says, "Pick up all this disgusting cheap plastic crap and throw away 95% of it, you disgusting pair of filthy cunts and your wild ass children, too."

And the realtor exemplifies all the worst traits of a fairly reprehensible occupation. "I've shown you one house, 15 miles outside your selected neighborhoods, $140,000 over budget, hideously dated interiors glazed with a sticky crud of cooking grease in every room, without the garage you insisted on, and with teo too few bedrooms for your nasty brood...and you dare reject it? It's perfect for you, you cretins."

by Anonymousreply 25September 9, 2022 11:07 AM

Hillary finds:

1. outdated HVAC

2. foundation or roof problems

3. water damage

David finds:

1. first house not too bad, but small

2. nice house, but missing some element on the wish list

3. perfect house, but over budget not in the current neighborhood.

Couple discusses in the kitchen. Listen to see which one they talk about the most. They will choose the opposite. " That last house David showed us has everything we need. We can grow into it. I love everything about it." " We're going to love our own house. Hillary did a beautiful job. I don't even recognize it." Just choose the opposite of what you hear in the kitchen and you will be 90% correct.

I have a weird crush on Hilary’s Staten Island fuckboy daddy contractor Eric Emerita. I don’t know what it is about him (he doesn’t tick the boxes of what I find conventionally attractive), but seems like a good guy and like he can really lay pipe. I’ve seen him share a lot of pride things on his Instagram page, so he is apparently a friend of the gays.

I watched a few episodes of the newest season, and there is something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. David has aged considerably in the last couple of years, and both he and Hilary seem tired and less interested.
