The obnoxious sycophancy of Serena Williams by the US media during the US open is embarrassing

From Spike Lee doing little jigs on the sideline during every point Sarena scores, to Gayle King orgasming on CBS every morning, it’s so over-the-top and obnoxious that the US Tennis Association should be boycotted by every country on earth for the next several years. It’s universal race guilt mouth drooling at its most blatant. I can’t be the only one who’s notice this am I? I like Serena Williams but she’s also reveled in it and if you saw her courtside interview after her match last night you know what I mean. No humility whatsoever. Neither she or the media recognizing the top players in the world who have come here as guests to compete. And let’s face it, it’s not just because Sarena is an awesome tennis player.

by Anonymousreply 266September 8, 2022 4:55 PM

WAKANDA FOREVER!!

by Anonymousreply 1September 1, 2022 12:24 PM

Sunshine Sachs has pulled out all the stops for the media blitz. It must be costing an absolute fortune (which Serena has).

It’s not any different than Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, though.

by Anonymousreply 2September 1, 2022 12:25 PM

I don’t know, OP, Serena is a champion and this is her farewell. On the other hand, I did notice the NY Times referred to her “magical” run so far - she’s won two matches so “magical” is completely ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 3September 1, 2022 12:26 PM

It is a bit much.

Wasn't there another sister once? What happened to her?

by Anonymousreply 4September 1, 2022 12:29 PM

Funny that they had the celebs and media and special guests for her first match assuming she would lose. I have nothing but admiration and respect for Serena, but yes, it's a bit much. Especially when she has to cue the spectators not to boo her opponent.

by Anonymousreply 5September 1, 2022 12:32 PM

It doesn't come across as sincere admiration.

It's like a communist party conference where everyone is competing to see who applauds the most enthusiastically.

Identity politics is poison.

by Anonymousreply 6September 1, 2022 12:35 PM

Which match will her good friend the Duchess of Sussex be attending?

by Anonymousreply 7September 1, 2022 12:35 PM

R6, yes... that's the CNN coverage at night.

by Anonymousreply 8September 1, 2022 12:36 PM

Well said, r6.

by Anonymousreply 9September 1, 2022 12:36 PM

"She has changed the game of tennis forever and ever! She's an unprecedented game changer, literally! She has opened up tennis to a whole new audience and future generations for the very first time! Tennis will never be the same again, and the game's horrible historical racism and sexism will never be tolerated again! Think of all those adorable little underclass children who have been inspired to become tennis champions because of her!"

by Anonymousreply 10September 1, 2022 12:37 PM

The MEDIA - including the normal news outlets - has been promoting and apologizing for Serena Williams for twenty years. Many of these "fans" you speak of know nothing or give a shit about the game of tennis, they see Serena as a symbol. And they buy all of the GOAT nonsense. I don't blame them, and I'm sure Serena is very appreciative.

by Anonymousreply 11September 1, 2022 12:37 PM

DON’T 👏 MESS 👏 WITH 👏 QUEEN 👏 SERENA

by Anonymousreply 12September 1, 2022 12:38 PM

Serena is a warrior, a female martin luther king mixed with harriet tubman! she has inspired MILLIONS IF NOT EVERYONE around the world to be the best they can be, to not be afraid, and so on and so on! MONUMENTAL SARCASM!!

IT IS beyond embarrassing and ridiculous!

This coverage, the moron commentators, and the wannabe, there to be seen crowd have actually made me sick and turned me off of the actual sport! I don't feel this way about any other grand slam except the U.S. open...

and once again, yet again, Serena is NOT the undisputed greatest of all time. Martina, Steffi, Chris all have records comparable to her and in fact, have MORE records all time records than Serena, but of course this is all ignored because it doesn't fit the narrative story....

by Anonymousreply 13September 1, 2022 12:40 PM

[quote]She has changed the game of tennis forever and ever!

Very funny, R10. She's done well, yes. EVERY dominating tennis champion has all of the attributes they say Serena invented. The only thing that makes her different is that she's black.

- Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Evonne Goolagong

by Anonymousreply 14September 1, 2022 12:42 PM

I doubt you guys are not old enough to remember the absolute backlash against all things Williams Sisters when they first came out (including accusing them of being teenage boys) so your old asses didn't care then and you want those old days back.

by Anonymousreply 15September 1, 2022 12:42 PM

I would like her so much more if she played in shorts. Those little tutu skirts that ride up to her waist look like shit and make her look fat.

by Anonymousreply 16September 1, 2022 12:42 PM

It's sickening, OP. I predict Serena will crash out 3rd round.

by Anonymousreply 17September 1, 2022 12:42 PM

It seems pretty manufactured to me. Serena has never been overly loved in the way other sporting greats have. The last straw for a lot of people was the 2018 US Final where she berated the umpire and ruined the moment for Naomi Osaka, who has struggled with mental issues ever since. It was actually a very revealing moment, where Serena was losing and her bad behavior was called out she started ranting that she was being unfairly treated because she was a woman. Her opponent was made to feel so bad for defeating Serena that she apologized for winning and appeared devastated throughout the presentation in what should have been one of the best moments of her life.

by Anonymousreply 18September 1, 2022 12:42 PM

I did want her to beat that monster Margaret Smith Cunt’s record. Oh well, sometimes EVIL 😈 wins!

by Anonymousreply 19September 1, 2022 12:43 PM

chris evert: an American, who at the time (and still) won the most u.s. opens of all time, announced the Open was her final tournament, started her great career at the open at 16 reaching the semifinals, and what was her send off? NOTHING!...

People want to talk about overcoming? talk about althea gibson and martina navratilova!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 20September 1, 2022 12:44 PM

Anyone who has been on DL for five minutes or more recognizes exactly what's going on here, with the "jig" this and "race guilt" that and "she's not humble like she should be," and Sunshine Sachs being brought up within seconds of the OP's post, which is so poorly written I'm not sure he even bothered to run it through a translator first, and instead relied on his own sketchy English skills.

by Anonymousreply 21September 1, 2022 12:44 PM

R15, that's bullshit. The media and fans embraced the Williams sisters from day one. The issue was her psychotic father Richard Williams. The other players had issues with them too because the father told them to stay away and not talk to them.

by Anonymousreply 22September 1, 2022 12:45 PM

Her final match was in 1989, r20. Things have changed since then.

by Anonymousreply 23September 1, 2022 12:47 PM

R18 exactly.. HOW CONVENIENT that everyone seems to forget just how many incidences Serena has had at the Open and ALL her fault!

Oh, I forgot she's passionate and a warrior and in today's society and culture, so one can be a mass murderer but as long as you (meaning the public) find them entertaining in whatever they do, then it's all okay!..

(i.e. tom cruise is a dead beat father and is the public face of a evil abusive cult but hey he entertains people with his movies, so who cares!)

by Anonymousreply 24September 1, 2022 12:47 PM

R23.. you're right evert's last match at the open was in 1989.. SO WHAT! Things have not changed that much, that she didn't deserve ANY kind of ceremony or send off?

If anything by now, Evert should have had something named after her at the Open. Not only for her records, but for her greatest comportment and humbleness and manner on the court, the most gracious champion ever. Doesn't that and isn't that suppose to mean something?

by Anonymousreply 25September 1, 2022 12:50 PM

Professional sports is show business, and this is a good fun story with crackle. Why overthink it?

[quote]It seems pretty manufactured to me.

I passed a few sports bars on my walk home last night, and they were all fairly full with people watching her match.

by Anonymousreply 26September 1, 2022 12:51 PM

[quote]The media and fans embraced the Williams sisters from day one.

Absolutely untrue. Everyone was vicious when she beat Pierce and Seles in 1997, then all the attacks about fixed games came soon after.

by Anonymousreply 27September 1, 2022 12:51 PM

She's a big gal for somebody who gets that much cardio. No disrespect, I like it.

by Anonymousreply 28September 1, 2022 12:51 PM

I didn’t like Gayle King’s speech. She’s such an asshat.

by Anonymousreply 29September 1, 2022 12:52 PM

[quote]evert's last match at the open was in 1989.. SO WHAT! Things have not changed that much, that she didn't deserve ANY kind of ceremony or send off?

That was 33 years ago. Yes, things have changed. No one was getting big send-offs back then unless it was men's football or baseball or basketball, beyond commentary on sports shows, and it had nothing to do with who deserved what.

Big send-offs are spectacle, and if her last match had been in the 1970s, she'd have probably gotten her spectacle.

by Anonymousreply 30September 1, 2022 12:53 PM

Another of Oprah's dubious gifts to the world.

by Anonymousreply 31September 1, 2022 12:53 PM

DL's Klan Grannies are out in full force this morning, right OP et al.

by Anonymousreply 32September 1, 2022 12:54 PM

I know, right?

by Anonymousreply 34September 1, 2022 12:57 PM

It’s definitely a race pride thing, let’s not be naive here. I don’t think Spike Lee would be dancing around if it was some white player. But who cares? She probably won’t make it to finals and she’ll be gone for good soon.

by Anonymousreply 35September 1, 2022 12:57 PM

R20, I was at the stadium when Chris played her last match in 1989. There was big promotion including a Sports Illustrated cover. In 1984, NBC celebrated Chris after she LOST Wimbledon to Martina Navratilova. Chris got plenty of this kind of shit, it's just that media was different than it is now.

[quote]I did want her to beat that monster Margaret Smith Cunt’s record.

She's need two more Grand Slam titles, but don't you realize that there are at least 20 other tournaments every year other than Grand Slams? Serena has a long way to go with those, her total singles titles number is lacking. All of the other greats, such as Evert, Navratilova and Graf, out pace Serena by 20-30 more total titles each.

by Anonymousreply 36September 1, 2022 1:00 PM

R36... true, but evert who WAS a icon and known as "chris america" and america's sweetheart, should of and deserve to have a ceremony AT the u.s. open , not just a magazine cover and some NBC blah, blah ONE TIME....

you're right in that the media is different meaning OVERBLOWN HYPE... everyone is a superstar, everyone is the greatest, yada yada yada.....

by Anonymousreply 37September 1, 2022 1:04 PM

[quote]Everyone was vicious when she beat Pierce and Seles in 1997

Wasn't that the one in Paris? Mary Pierce was a French National. Serena was number one and American. Don't you know what the French are like?

by Anonymousreply 38September 1, 2022 1:05 PM

She's an American success story, OP.

Is coverage over the top and sycophantic? You better believe it, but as another poster pointed out...same with Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan...as is with a host of other athletes, white or black.

She had dominated women's tennis for the past two decades (more or less). Let's celebrate her moment.

BTW, I belong to an overwhelmingly white health club/gym. The clean up staff is overwhelmingly Black. Last night I saw the attendant in the men's locker-room (a Haitian immigrant) watching the match avidly. So, let Black people...no, all people...celebrate a remarkable athlete. She is to be admired for her ability, athleticism, grit, and determination. She has achieved the American Dream. Brava!!

by Anonymousreply 39September 1, 2022 1:06 PM

[quote]america's sweetheart, should of

OH DEAR!

Should have, not should of, moron

by Anonymousreply 40September 1, 2022 1:06 PM

Gosh knows it HAS to be racism and whatever, It can't be how serena and venus acted and their father acted! EVEN NOW with serena's outrageous flip outs at the Open over the years...

"you're trying to take this away from me because i'm a woman!"

by Anonymousreply 41September 1, 2022 1:07 PM

R40.. who gives a flying fuck of proper grammar?! I may be a moron but you're a asshole... now we are even.

by Anonymousreply 42September 1, 2022 1:09 PM

Gayle King...she's your biggest fan until she isn't.

To be fair, Martina had a messy personal life & could be pretty surly & nasty too, but she retired with the praises & exultations, just like Williams. Yeah, it does seem kind of over the top, but she is a personal with real accomplishments so there's certainly no harm in it

by Anonymousreply 43September 1, 2022 1:10 PM

R43... another huge gripe I have is the whole "where serena came from and how she had to overcome" narrative... As if she and her sisters had no help from anyone, didn't spend time in florida and elsewhere developing their games and so on...

you want to talk about overcoming? talk about Martina!....

by Anonymousreply 44September 1, 2022 1:13 PM

Madiba, R32.

by Anonymousreply 45September 1, 2022 1:16 PM

OP is correct. And R6 gave perfect analogy.

by Anonymousreply 46September 1, 2022 1:17 PM

Grammar hawking is the ultimate pointless bitchery.

Which should not be confused with an accomplishment. It's the equivalent of over-eating because you can't get laid.

by Anonymousreply 47September 1, 2022 1:17 PM

You go gurrrl!

by Anonymousreply 48September 1, 2022 1:19 PM

By the way, anyone and everyone who knows tennis, knows that Kontaveit was NOT the number #2 player in the world in reality. She has been playing like #30 at best, but of course, we can't tell the truth on this either...

by Anonymousreply 49September 1, 2022 1:28 PM

Why is she so fucking fat????

by Anonymousreply 50September 1, 2022 1:53 PM

Once more DL shows its priorities. Maybe Williams is getting far too much praise, but think about the world now , think about the issues we face, think about how republicans are destroying the country, think about our Supreme Court, think about how gay rights are slowly being chipped away, think about how women may soon have no control over their own bodies, think about the dictators slowly taking over so many countries across the globe, think about climate change, think about the environment.... but sure, what really matters is that a black tennis player is being over-praised by the media. Fuckers.

by Anonymousreply 51September 1, 2022 2:01 PM

Serena Williams is, right now, the most famous athlete in the world. And she is a woman. That's kind of amazing. (I'm someone who doesn't care about sports and especially women's sports.)

The grammar trolls are pointing out our flaws because they want us to be better. They are correcting us here so we can excel in the real world. Thank you grammar trolls!

by Anonymousreply 52September 1, 2022 2:12 PM

R51, it's obviously difficult for you, but most of can have opinions about more than one topic at a time.

by Anonymousreply 53September 1, 2022 2:19 PM

She does have the best bad taste tennis outfits.

by Anonymousreply 54September 1, 2022 2:21 PM

R51 seems to be under the impression that this is the only thread on DL.

by Anonymousreply 55September 1, 2022 2:22 PM

Sports, why does it take such a prominent place in societies. Who could guess that hitting bouncing or throwing a ball could be so valuable to society. These people are worshipped like deities. maybe it is because encouraging hero worship is good for somebody. But who and why. Teachers are far more valuable to society and they're treated like turds in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 56September 1, 2022 2:28 PM

She is an American sports icon OP. You realize this is her last few games and she is about to retire. Why do you have 11 likes? Do you guys not get it?

The criticism if the Williams sisters have almost always been rooted in sexism and racism. Can you imagine how celebratory Tom Brady's last season will be or the last seasons of Michael Jordan and Derek Jeter. Athletic champions who keep a clean image are considered heros. Perhaps you should move to Bahrain.

by Anonymousreply 57September 1, 2022 2:36 PM

R6, Sincere??? People love sports. People love these sisters. They introduced a level of athleticism, competitiveness, and excitement never witnessed in women's tennis. You Mary's are probably only watch the guys matches and get angry when the women come on. Why wouldn't it be sincere. I don't get it. Most people are really into sports and love watching Serena play.

by Anonymousreply 58September 1, 2022 2:39 PM

[quote]You Mary's are probably only watch the guys matches and get angry when the women come on.

That's a cheap shot on a gay board, but you're obviously upset.

by Anonymousreply 59September 1, 2022 3:00 PM

[quote] She probably won’t make it to finals and she’ll be gone for good soon.

Au contraire. If your television was on today, you’d know that she’s a fashion icon. She has a VERY SUCCESSFUL fashion empire. And she’ll do a celebrity endorsement for absolutely any product (for a price). Her PR is paving the way for ugly overpriced glittery spandex confections made in China.

by Anonymousreply 60September 1, 2022 3:13 PM

R59, Shit is true. Such a thread would never be made on tennis icon Andy Roddick. It's like these Mary's don't get that Serena Williams is the greatest female tennis champion of all time.

by Anonymousreply 61September 1, 2022 3:18 PM

The few times I've seen her lose, in the post-game interview, she never complimented the play of her victorious opponent. Serena had a cold that day, she was tired, she had a sore leg, she had stomach cramps, blah blah blah. She always gave excuses instead of saying that her opponent played very well. That kind of behavior always kind of turned me off on Serena.

by Anonymousreply 62September 1, 2022 3:25 PM

What happened to her sister, Samantha?

by Anonymousreply 63September 1, 2022 3:33 PM

Seconding what [R62] noted above. She does play tennis well, but it's mostly a matter of brute strength; no finesse, no elegance. AND, I also have noticed that she would never just acknowledge she was outplayed. It was always "the sun was in my eyes", "have a cold", yadda yadda. Serena Williams is proof that you can be very good at something but lack any class or taste.

by Anonymousreply 64September 1, 2022 3:41 PM

It was Billie Jean King that paved the way for women's tennis, not Serena.

by Anonymousreply 65September 1, 2022 3:57 PM

I noticed that the Williams Family shooed Billie Jean King away when Serena was having photos taken.

by Anonymousreply 66September 1, 2022 4:02 PM

[quote] Why is she so fucking fat????

I noticed that she mentioned "keeping in shape" as one of the things she'll miss about playing tennis, so I don't think we've seen the worst of it yet.

by Anonymousreply 67September 1, 2022 4:05 PM

I find Alexis O'Hanian oddly sexy.

I'm going to start a new thread!

by Anonymousreply 68September 1, 2022 4:08 PM

R13 Serena does resemble photographs of Harriett Tubman in the face. UGLY!

by Anonymousreply 69September 1, 2022 4:09 PM

R68 I do, too. I kept imagining what he looks like naked every time the cameras panned to him in the crowd.

by Anonymousreply 70September 1, 2022 4:12 PM

He's a funny guy, R70, because you google images of him and in half he looks hot and the other half horrible. Still, I find those eyes...

by Anonymousreply 71September 1, 2022 4:14 PM

R69 I think Venus looks a lot more like Harriet Tubman (or even a slender Ester Rolle)

by Anonymousreply 72September 1, 2022 4:14 PM

I love DL Klan Grannies. Actually I just like the name.

by Anonymousreply 73September 1, 2022 4:15 PM

Why is it that successful black athletes marry white people? Both Serena, Tiger Woods and many others.

by Anonymousreply 74September 1, 2022 4:18 PM

Chris Evert was a very popular, famous tennis superstar in the 70s. She also helped pave the way in.womens' tennis. It isn't just Serena. I'm tired of hearing about her and am glad she's finally retiring. The fawning over her is over the top obnoxious.

by Anonymousreply 75September 1, 2022 4:24 PM

Martina Navrailova, too. She was on top for many years and was an excellent player. Another superstar..

by Anonymousreply 76September 1, 2022 4:27 PM

*Navratilova..^^

by Anonymousreply 77September 1, 2022 4:28 PM

Serena has faced hostility with a not so subtle racist edge her whole career. Her biggest fault in some people’s eyes is that refuses to succumb to it . They can’t cope with her, so they insult her.

by Anonymousreply 78September 1, 2022 4:33 PM

She is a very strong woman...and physically, I'll give her that.

by Anonymousreply 79September 1, 2022 4:35 PM

R63 Serena was Samantha Stevens’ cousin not her sister. Funny comment though.

by Anonymousreply 80September 1, 2022 4:53 PM

The Williams Sisters 👯‍♀️ gave the U.S. 30 Grand Slam titles in 20 yrs. - In those same years the American men went completely MIA with maybe 1 title (Roddick?)

We need new blood 🩸, men & women. Thank you Venus & Serena

by Anonymousreply 81September 1, 2022 4:56 PM

Serena , Beyawnce and zzzzendaya the fawning over these “queens” is so over the top.

by Anonymousreply 82September 1, 2022 4:56 PM

Kinda like the sycophancy of Princess Diana for the past 30 years, huh?

by Anonymousreply 83September 1, 2022 4:56 PM

Tennis used to be a very reserved sport. The spectators were quiet, just looked back and forth at the volleys...with just a smattering of applause. No people shouting and cheering, no temper tantrums, no flashy clothes worn by the players (had to be all white attire). It's almost like a Roman Colosseum spectacle sport, without the bloodshed. Drama is part of the game now.

by Anonymousreply 84September 1, 2022 4:59 PM

“Sycophancy” is not used as you think it is.

by Anonymousreply 85September 1, 2022 5:02 PM

R84, that image began to change in the 1970s...long before the Williams' sisters. The style and antics of men like Ilie Năstase Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe changed the sport. So did the media...think Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King match.

Arthur Ashe was the reserved sportsman.

I love sports...playing and watching. I will confess that women's tennis is one of the few women's sports I like to watch. It may be the gay in me. Watching a male tennis player get all hot and sweaty chasing that ball on the court with his shorts clinging to his-oh-so muscular hindquarters! I don't care about his ranking then...the sight of him beats out watching Serena play any day!! Ha!

by Anonymousreply 86September 1, 2022 5:10 PM

What do you think she eats? Big Macs and such, or more like a lot of donuts?

by Anonymousreply 87September 1, 2022 5:11 PM

R83 She’s dead, are you saying if Serena died tragically she would be made a saint?

by Anonymousreply 88September 1, 2022 5:12 PM

R83 wonders - not making this upn - if Madonna's death will spark another Stonewall.

Don't waste your time. She's either trolling or on the wrong end of a conservatorship.

by Anonymousreply 89September 1, 2022 5:14 PM

[quote]on the wrong end of a conservatorship

I’m gonna steal that.

by Anonymousreply 90September 1, 2022 5:17 PM

R86...That's true...lol. I remember the bad boys of the 70s. The Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King match build up was a kind of "in your face". A woman playing against a man. That was a time when feminists were uprising and was a big deal.

by Anonymousreply 91September 1, 2022 5:18 PM

R91...Boy, was that hyped.

Men's tennis shorts were short back then, too. I remember as a kid reading in SI that Ilie Năstase changed his shorts on court and stood for a moment in just a jockstrap!

Those were the days!!!

by Anonymousreply 92September 1, 2022 5:23 PM

[quote] Serena has faced hostility with a not so subtle racist edge her whole career. Her biggest fault in some people’s eyes is that refuses to succumb to it . They can’t cope with her, so they insult her.

THANK YOU, R78 !!!

Serena is an extraordinary athlete who has performed at a very high level with remarkable longevity -- arguably transforming the sport with her athleticism. There is no aspect of her career that has been subject to hyperbole. She has EARNED this moment! It is especially disgusting that the chronic underachievers of Datalounge just see a Black woman and an opportunity to degrade her.

by Anonymousreply 93September 1, 2022 5:23 PM

Navratilova had it far worse than Serena!

1) had to hide her sexuality and then eventually coming out gay back then 2) having to defect from her own country, having to sneakily do this otherwise she would be taken away and never seen or heard from again 3) was only 18 when she did this and had no family or friends and didn't see her parents for years...4) had no coaches until she was 25 or so!....

oh yeah and navratilova has far more all time records than serena does!

by Anonymousreply 94September 1, 2022 5:32 PM

All this forum does is complain about black and trans people anymore. Fuck y’all

by Anonymousreply 95September 1, 2022 5:33 PM

R95 You conveniently ignore all the hate we give white celebs, but you’re okay with that I am sure.

by Anonymousreply 96September 1, 2022 5:35 PM

I’m going to root for any athlete who is 40 fucking years old and out there giving their all.

by Anonymousreply 97September 1, 2022 5:44 PM

R6 liking the hype to a people’s party-style communist conference is remarkably spot-on. It has little to do with Serena herself although I always saw Venus as the true trailblazer. And Serena has never done anything negative in my eye until her “aw shucks” comment after her win last night. Smirking at the reporter who asked how she made such an amazing comeback, replying “Well, ya know, I’m just Serena”. Queue wild applauds and replays and Gayle King dancing her big ass around the CBS studio during a live segment.

It’s really unbelievably embarrassing for the USTA and the country who’s playing host to all these accomplished tennis players from around the world.

by Anonymousreply 98September 1, 2022 5:51 PM

It’s awful. The year she had a hormonal postpartum bitch fit at the US Open and spoiled Naomi Osaka’s first major win, and the crowd cheered her on the whole time, is when I lost all respect for her.

by Anonymousreply 99September 1, 2022 5:52 PM

how many "incidences" has serena had at the open? I count at least 3 (clijsters, osaka, andreescu) any more?

forgotten from the half drunk, mostly unknowledgeable tennis "fans" in the arthur ashe stadium...

by Anonymousreply 100September 1, 2022 5:55 PM

I wonder if what seems like excessive pride is really an indication of how marginalized black people feel in American society. This is so big to them. White people can't really understand it. We'll never know their burden or experience and so we'll never fully understand or relate to their reaction to moments of triumph.

by Anonymousreply 101September 1, 2022 5:55 PM

R101 Another “their pain is so much deeper than anyone else or anyone can imagine.” Give it a rest. If serena was dominating a sport with mostly black athletes no one would be going this crazy over her.

by Anonymousreply 102September 1, 2022 6:00 PM

R74, But Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Stephen Curry, Grant Hill, Lisa Leslie.

It's ok. You are just a stupid cunt.

[quote] Last night I saw the attendant in the men's locker-room (a Haitian immigrant) watching the match avidly.

I find her inability to identify with individuals of the majority race in the country to which she has immigrated disturbing rather than charming.

by Anonymousreply 104September 1, 2022 6:05 PM

Well, come on, R102... their pain is pretty fucking dead (I'm a white guy.) Even I know that. I'm correlating what seems like excessive excitement with our inability to imagine what it's like to be Americans in a country that makes you feel second class and has for more than a century. I have found the emotion on CNN of the black anchors above and beyond. I'm wondering if our inability to understand their collective experience makes their emotional response that much bigger. It's just a thought. Wasn't trying to spark a competition.

by Anonymousreply 105September 1, 2022 6:07 PM

Their pain is pretty fucking deep, I meant.

by Anonymousreply 106September 1, 2022 6:08 PM

R105 Just call yourself white guilt gary.

by Anonymousreply 107September 1, 2022 6:12 PM

Better that than what they'd call you.

by Anonymousreply 108September 1, 2022 6:17 PM

R54, agree. Especially last night.

by Anonymousreply 109September 1, 2022 6:17 PM

lmao all the angry old white racist queens here. Not surprising

is some of the coverage over the top? absolutely but so are some of the reactions in this thread

by Anonymousreply 110September 1, 2022 6:19 PM

I like a lot of black athletes Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert are my Baes and I think Simone Biles is grear. Serena however is unlikeable , rude and mannish.

by Anonymousreply 111September 1, 2022 6:19 PM

Very arrogant also.

by Anonymousreply 112September 1, 2022 6:20 PM

But what does she eat???

I really want to know.

by Anonymousreply 113September 1, 2022 6:21 PM

[quote]To be fair, Martina had a messy personal life & could be pretty surly & nasty too, but she retired with the praises & exultations, just like Williams.

Martina, surly and nasty? NO, not in the least. Compared to Serena, Martina is Mother Teresa.

Was Martina celebrated like Serena, during, at retirement or after her career? You must be kidding. Martina was ridiculed by some spectators during matches, then ridiculed by sports writers. One NY Post writer blatantly said that she wouldn't be dominating the field if she was heterosexual because lesbians are half man.

by Anonymousreply 114September 1, 2022 6:23 PM

I wonder if she played against a pro tennis guy....would be a pretty even match? She's built like a brick house.

by Anonymousreply 115September 1, 2022 6:23 PM

Serena, I mean...^^

R113 Hairy white cock and ass.

[quote]I'm tired of hearing about her and am glad she's finally retiring. The fawning over her is over the top obnoxious.

Don't discount another advantage that Serena leaving tennis will have: her obnoxious fans go with her

by Anonymousreply 119September 1, 2022 6:34 PM

She's a great player but others are too. While getting gas last week, I heard NPR talking about her retirement and how she was set to receive a grand send off and I thought the tone and language sounded weird but it registered as odd. This thread is correct. Honestly, if I were Serena, I'd feel uncomfortable with this entire race narrative. It's not genuine. I didn't see Spike Lee, but it figures he'd be doing that because he's a huge racist. He seems to hate white people. Serena doesn't seem like a racist hater but as long as the pendulum swings so wildly in favor of one race or another, we will never have peace amongst these groups.

by Anonymousreply 120September 1, 2022 6:36 PM

Over compensation...

by Anonymousreply 121September 1, 2022 6:38 PM

Don’t they do this with every exceptional athlete? Y’all are crazy racists.

by Anonymousreply 122September 1, 2022 6:40 PM

R122 it's over the top with most very accomplished athletes and yes DL has lots of racists. They take for granted that Serena came out of nowhere. She didn't grow up rich. It's so hard to make it in professional tennis if you don't come from wealth or a tennis family. Her father sure is a flawed individual but also a tennis genius who taught himself the game by reading and then coached his daughters to be history-making champions. Yes they got extra coaching from more qualified individuals in their teen years but their father gave them the tennis foundation which is remarkable. The chances of this story happening were so slim and people here are just blowing it off of course.

There will be plenty of over the top coverage when Federer and Nadal retire too but they didn't have to go through nearly as much as Serena did. There definitely was racism on tour, in the media and among fans. So many kept bashing the years when Serena dominated the game and many kept asking if she was a woman or on steroids (never mind the fact she's always had a big butt and boobs which would have disappeared had she been taking steroids).

by Anonymousreply 123September 1, 2022 6:50 PM

Shut up cracker (OP.)

by Anonymousreply 124September 1, 2022 6:51 PM

Does anyone have the Ivy League squash standings?

by Anonymousreply 125September 1, 2022 6:55 PM

R114... martina as well had the steroid accusations... had fellow players (mandlikova) calling her a man.... had people in the crowd shouting and yelling to her opponent to win with "we want a real woman to win!".... and so on... along with my earlier posting of martina's defection and all she went thru, she still had it worse than serena and yes, martina, grew up poor too and not even have a real coach until she was 25!..

call me racist, but the native american indian had it way worse than any black slave... which is worse? to be a slave or to LITERALLY have your race nearly killed off and your land taken away and even now no real champion, no visible hero to help in politics, sports, entertainment?

by Anonymousreply 126September 1, 2022 7:00 PM

58 out of 1000 Native Americans don't even have plumbing to their homes. Native Americans experience more poverty, deaths and higher unemployment rates. Good point, R126.

No, R122. The fact is that the media has overhyped Serena Williams all during her career. Any backlash directed toward her (I don't remember anything substantial), was fueled by the over attention.

by Anonymousreply 129September 1, 2022 7:15 PM

Serena Williams is a man . It is an abomination that she is allowed to compete against women notwithstanding the fact that all pro tennis athletes are gay by definition

by Anonymousreply 130September 1, 2022 7:17 PM

She’s ugly

That is the revelator

by Anonymousreply 131September 1, 2022 7:18 PM

R126 pointless post. So you're trying to discredit 1 discriminated group by bringing up other discriminated groups? That's pathetic to play the oppression Olympics. None of what you said discounts what Serena has gone through. Navratilova went through her own negative experiences too. There are no top Native American tennis players so you bringing up that group is absurd.

by Anonymousreply 132September 1, 2022 7:20 PM

[quote]She didn't grow up rich. It's so hard to make it in professional tennis if you don't come from wealth or a tennis family.

Name a recent player who grew up rich. Tennis is an expensive sport, but very very few players who came along over the past 30 years came from money. Nice try.

by Anonymousreply 133September 1, 2022 7:29 PM

She shits out of her ass just like everyone else. She’s also hot horrible migraines probably from decades of chronic stress.

by Anonymousreply 134September 1, 2022 7:31 PM

R133 uh Nadal's father owned several companies and his uncle was a soccer star. Federer's father was a pharmaceutical executive. They grew up quite comfortable.

Clijsters grew up with a soccer star father and gymnast mother.

Davenport grew up with a professional volleyball father and her mother was president of the California volleyball association. Clearly money there

Roddick's father owned several businesses. The family could afford for his brother to be a junior player too.

there are plenty of examples of players who grew up without having to worry about money. It is definitely much harder if a family cannot fund a child's tennis themselves. Keep trying to discount Serena though. You fail every time

The Williams' sisters didn't even play junior tennis which is unheard of.. Some of that was due to the costs.

by Anonymousreply 135September 1, 2022 7:41 PM

R62 I think the never admitting she wasn’t as good as her opponent on the day thing comes from their father. Speculation, but I think they were either too afraid of him to acknowledge it or just couldn’t take it in terms of ego. I admire an athlete who just acknowledges yes, they played better than me today. It’s not the same as saying they are a better player than you. I respect Serena greatly but never liked her. I feel the same about Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors, who were a bit like that too. .

by Anonymousreply 136September 1, 2022 7:44 PM

I don't pay attention to tennis much, but why didn't Venus break out more on the tennis circuit? I guess Serena is a better player...thought Venus was, too.

by Anonymousreply 137September 1, 2022 7:44 PM

I hope she loses and has one last sore loser freak out.

by Anonymousreply 141September 1, 2022 7:49 PM

R132.. it's called an analogy...You're right there are no top native american indian tennis players or athletes or actors? Now why is that? Ponder that for a moment!..

by Anonymousreply 142September 1, 2022 8:06 PM

R142

But why are you trying to use indigenous people against black people? Shouldn’t you be using this argument against white people, who continue to marginalize both?

by Anonymousreply 143September 1, 2022 8:15 PM

I’m not bovvered.

by Anonymousreply 144September 1, 2022 8:21 PM

[quote] Seconding what [[R62]] noted above.

So since she is a Black woman she lacks all characteristics of traditional femininity, she has no class and she is arrogant? OK, we got it. Now you can kill yourself.

by Anonymousreply 145September 1, 2022 9:35 PM

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

by Anonymousreply 146September 1, 2022 9:39 PM

Native indians were plucked out of the stone age. They are not ready for toilets. History is brutal and nine tribes are exterminated for every tribe that wins rights to territory. Black slaves were deadmen walking and only live because whites rescued them by buying them from the tribes who subjugated them.

by Anonymousreply 147September 1, 2022 9:42 PM

Every winter I notice the dearth of Indians (feather) on the slopes in St. Moritz.

by Anonymousreply 148September 1, 2022 9:52 PM

R143.. that is whole other story and aspect bigger than me to comment.....The point is serena is wrongly hailed as a/ the savior/leader/champion of the black race thru tennis as she is being literally worshipped by others as. And part if not most of that worship especially from the VAST MAJORITY who know nothing about tennis/tennis history/facts is because of this, whereas native americans have had it worse, still do and have no "champion" as their voice in sports or pretty much anywhere of note. Serena's "origin"as a professional tennis player is also rarely told in it's entirety and truth because it doesn't feed the narrative.

by Anonymousreply 149September 1, 2022 9:59 PM

She’s man like

by Anonymousreply 150September 1, 2022 10:00 PM

And is Serena snubbed in purse shops on the Bahnhofstrasse?

by Anonymousreply 151September 1, 2022 10:02 PM

Can’t talk now! I’m too busy stag hunting in the Bois de Boulogne!

by Anonymousreply 152September 1, 2022 10:06 PM

Goodbye, Serena. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. We can't afford to get a new door.

by Anonymousreply 153September 1, 2022 10:08 PM

Serena won for years because she was physically stronger than most if not all the women, not because she had better stroke production (except for the serve perhaps), or a expert strategy mind or variety, etc....

now that she can't outhit and outslug opponents at her age, she's left to no plan b, much less a plan c... those she defeats now choke, defeat themselves or are intimidated....

by Anonymousreply 154September 1, 2022 10:12 PM

Well, when all is said and done, at least we'll remember the tutu outfits with fondness.

by Anonymousreply 155September 1, 2022 10:13 PM

She’ll go back to making shitty commercials.

by Anonymousreply 156September 1, 2022 10:20 PM

R154

Bitter racist bitch.

by Anonymousreply 157September 1, 2022 10:27 PM

She has to come home every night and let some fat gross potato-shaped man crawl over her. Yes, he's rich. BUT SO IS SHE!

So I'm ok with her having this.

by Anonymousreply 158September 1, 2022 10:30 PM

John McEnroe was correct.

by Anonymousreply 159September 1, 2022 10:31 PM

This thread is like flypaper for Klan Grannies. And the way you describe the Williams sisters and tennis, it’s clear that you spend more time slobbering over the Daily Mail than you ever have following the sport.

Serena deserves the hype for what she accomplished. I’m very glad she’ll likely end her career playing doubles with Venus. And I hope Federer gets his own celebration when he finally calls time.

by Anonymousreply 160September 1, 2022 10:37 PM

R157 Aweeeee 'Rumpkin...the race card so soon? You didn't challenge any of the posters points and just mindlessly jumped to your safe space.

by Anonymousreply 161September 1, 2022 10:38 PM

What is odd is that tennis has lost popularity over the past 20 years. I used to be a big fan of Navratilova, Evert, Borg and McEnroe. But since then, tennis has got boring. Federer and Nadal are the only players I'm interested in watching. Can't stand Djokovich.

by Anonymousreply 162September 1, 2022 10:40 PM

R161 I really wonder why some posters are so thin skinned? I see white celebs (that I like) get hate all the time and I don’t go around calling their haters racist. Serena Williams is NOT miss rainbows and sunshine, it’s easy to see why she would have haters.

by Anonymousreply 163September 1, 2022 10:43 PM

She's a legend, OP.

You're just a Republican racist troll looking to tear down a black woman.

by Anonymousreply 164September 1, 2022 10:44 PM

R6 is another Republican troll like OP. You were just looking to complain about identity politics. She's a legend, probably the best female tennis player ever.

by Anonymousreply 165September 1, 2022 10:46 PM

[quote] [R157] Aweeeee 'Rumpkin...the race card so soon? You didn't challenge any of the posters points and just mindlessly jumped to your safe space.

I am not r157 but why go back and forth when its simply an opinion? We all know the root of these anti-Serena posts. There is no "safe space" in the world.

by Anonymousreply 166September 1, 2022 10:47 PM

R163 Couldn't agree more.

by Anonymousreply 167September 1, 2022 10:47 PM

R14, she is a better player who has accomplished more than any of the players you mentioned. And those players aren't American, of course the American media isn't going to pay as much attention to them

This thread is really bringing out the Klan Grannies

by Anonymousreply 168September 1, 2022 10:48 PM

OP and the racist rednecks miss the days when Anna Kournikova got tons of attention for being a hot white woman, even though she never won anything important. That's the real "identity politics"

by Anonymousreply 169September 1, 2022 10:49 PM

Another Klan Granny at r7

by Anonymousreply 170September 1, 2022 10:50 PM

So what became of Venus? I don’t follow tennis (can’t understand the scoring).

by Anonymousreply 171September 1, 2022 10:50 PM

Venus is still playing, but she developed a serious autoimmune disorder in the 2000s that really impacted her physically and hurt her career. She’s playing doubles with Serena in the US Open this year for the first time in a long time.

by Anonymousreply 172September 1, 2022 10:54 PM

R170 Look what having a few drinks while discovering someone disagrees with your cherished belief does....you magically have a superpower that can discern a poster's intent...SPOILER... they're ALL racist intents. 🙄

Continue hitting the bottle R170.

by Anonymousreply 173September 1, 2022 10:55 PM

[quote] OP and the racist rednecks miss the days when Anna Kournikova

I doubt OP and many of these posters even follow tennis. They hate Serena because she’s friends with Meghan Markle. That’s why you see mentions of Gayle King, Oprah, Sunshine Sachs, etc popping up here - the Markle obsessives talk about nothing else.

by Anonymousreply 175September 1, 2022 11:08 PM

Well remembered, r175.

by Anonymousreply 176September 1, 2022 11:12 PM

Chris Evert's legacy is the 2 handed backhand. Unfortunately, it has created generations of really dull players. Evert had sex appeal, dated movie stars, other athletes and her on again/off again relationship with Jimmy Connors was a decades long soap opera. I remember pre-cable, she was always mentioned in the sports segment on local tv. She should be lauded as much as Billie Jean King - who once declared Chris was the biggest star tennis ever had. But little to nothing is named after her (or Connors). Evert and Connors, King and Bobby Riggs ignited the tennis boom. You'd never know it, the way the media praises divas Federer, Nadal and Serena.

by Anonymousreply 177September 1, 2022 11:12 PM

I’m sure every generation feels the same about its sports stars, but growing up watching the glory years of Federer/Nadal and Venus/Serena playing each other in Slams - I really can’t imagine anything better.

by Anonymousreply 178September 1, 2022 11:14 PM

She was so nasty to the young girl that beat her ass on the court. It was SHAMEFUL.

by Anonymousreply 179September 1, 2022 11:22 PM

The same “young girl” who everyone on this forum has crucified for being a black woman with mental health issues. What’s shameful is the racism on this forum.

by Anonymousreply 183September 2, 2022 1:47 AM

This thread is hilarious. Bunch of old fags getting angry. Especially loves the comments saying that the tennis world loved the Williams Sisters from day one and that Navratilova had it harder. Get the fuck out of here. 🤣 Only on DL is being a white Gay a bigger struggle than being Black. The way that Navratilova and Evert THEMSELVES talked about the sisters when they first came on the scene is a whole issue itself. Most of you don't know what you're even talking about.

I agree that the media coverage isn't sincere. They've never liked her but they know she's a major star and draw and tennis is going to be in big trouble without her and Federer/Nadal (when they retire).

I wonder who you'll all transfer all your hate towards Serena to now? Osaka? Now that she wins (she's not in form lately but she'll get it back) and has become more and more opinionated. Coco Gauff?

by Anonymousreply 184September 2, 2022 2:19 AM

R184 There is no black plethora of talent behind Serena like people expected. It’s not gymnastics. People don’t hate serena because of her skin color they hate her personality, mannish quality and arrogance.

by Anonymousreply 190September 2, 2022 10:54 AM

R184.. YES, MARTINA DID HAVE IT WORSE! Serena was born and raised in the United States already a plus!! And she had help, unlike Navratilova! NO ONE would think that Martina didn't have it worse! Never mind, Althea Gibson!

Navratilova and especially Evert always praise Serena more and more as the years have gone by, one can see this in actual interviews..

Does Serena ever praise them? And gee, I wonder why many do not like Serena? NEWSFLASH, it's not about what race she is, it's her antics over the years on court! How many incidences have there been just as the Open?!..

Of course they're going to blow smoke. It's not like this is unprecedented in the history of media.

by Anonymousreply 196September 2, 2022 1:46 PM

I'm glad to see her go...bye now, Serena.!

by Anonymousreply 197September 2, 2022 1:57 PM

Serena presents some interesting dichotomies—an absolutely amazing athlete who has often not been a very good sport, but she's also supposed to be very popular with the other players.

by Anonymousreply 198September 2, 2022 2:18 PM

Serena Williams is the most winningest female tennis player and the most successful female athlete of all time. It's like these Mary's don't grasp that she is the Michael Jordan of female sports. She is a cultural icon like Babe Ruth. She brought a mainstream audience to female tennis. She deserves her glory.

I don't know what planet you're dialing in from, R168. Both Navratilova and Evert have more tournament titles than Serena.

R206, but they've also competed more. Stfu and go away.

by Anonymousreply 207September 2, 2022 3:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 208September 2, 2022 3:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 209September 2, 2022 3:40 PM

I'm pretty sick of the glorification of her too, although to her credit it's in not her fault. She always comes across as basically a very nice and confident person.

The Spike Lee shit is so annoying. I hope he dies sooner rather than later. He always has to make everything all about himself.

by Anonymousreply 210September 2, 2022 3:43 PM

R210, if you think Serena Williams comes across as basically a very nice and confident person, you've missed a lot.

by Anonymousreply 211September 2, 2022 4:04 PM

Serena is nice and confident. That doesn't take away from hee assertiveness and aggressiveness as an athlete. You can tell how competitive it is. Sometimes she got a little too passionate and became a bit of tyrant.

by Anonymousreply 212September 2, 2022 4:09 PM

Meh.

She’s one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

Who cares?

Let her have her huge going away party.

NBD.

by Anonymousreply 213September 2, 2022 4:10 PM

But R127 we gave the native Americans access to our Lord and Savior! Glory!

by Anonymousreply 216September 2, 2022 5:56 PM

The New York Post nailed something? How is that possible?

by Anonymousreply 217September 2, 2022 6:05 PM

Once she stops playing, how fat do you think she’ll get?

I say 280.

by Anonymousreply 218September 2, 2022 6:07 PM

R218, Fat enough to buy your whole family and shed the weight. Do YOU even work out you cunt. Of course you probably work that mouth and knees daily, you fkin mary whore.

by Anonymousreply 219September 2, 2022 6:18 PM

Good Lord, r219. I don't think Chernobyl had half so spectacular a meltdown.

by Anonymousreply 220September 2, 2022 6:21 PM

Mercy!

by Anonymousreply 221September 2, 2022 6:24 PM

R219 = very desperate

by Anonymousreply 222September 2, 2022 6:25 PM

Own it. Own the fact that you will always be an underachieving whore.

by Anonymousreply 223September 2, 2022 6:37 PM

Ok. I own it!

by Anonymousreply 224September 2, 2022 6:38 PM

R224, Thnx.

by Anonymousreply 225September 2, 2022 6:41 PM

Girls, girls!! You're BOTH exhausting!

by Anonymousreply 226September 2, 2022 6:41 PM

[quote] I like Serena Williams but she’s also reveled in it and if you saw her courtside interview after her match last night you know what I mean. No humility whatsoever.

Why should she have to show humility? She's one of the greatest tennis players ever, not a potential friend.

by Anonymousreply 227September 2, 2022 6:59 PM

For an athlete why is she so fat?

by Anonymousreply 228September 2, 2022 7:05 PM

She had a baby.

by Anonymousreply 229September 2, 2022 7:08 PM

r229 FOUR years ago

by Anonymousreply 230September 2, 2022 7:13 PM

What's your excuse, r230?

by Anonymousreply 231September 2, 2022 7:14 PM

Steffi won 22 slams and retired at 30. Serena is still dragging her carcass around at 40 with one more slam. GOAT my arse.

by Anonymousreply 232September 2, 2022 7:15 PM

r231 I am not female or a professional highly paid athlete so you're comparing apples with oranges. Nice try though.

by Anonymousreply 233September 2, 2022 7:18 PM

It truly is mindboggling or OUTRAGEOUS 'selective amnesia" that not a single tennis "commentator" ever EVER EVER will state the truth, in that martina, steffi and evert and yes even court have more all time records than serena has!...

WILLFULLY LYING or are they THAT IGNORANT of tennis history and records? Or both? I believe it's both! Wozniacki when told just recently that martina was 86-1 in 1983 (1983 not 1883!) the greatest win/loss season of all time male or female she replied back "was that in one year?"....

by Anonymousreply 234September 2, 2022 7:20 PM

No one is saying Williams is the best ever. She's one of the greatest. That's enough

by Anonymousreply 235September 2, 2022 7:23 PM

[quote] Why should she have to show humility?

Because all human beings have to show humility, no matter how talented or accomplished they are.

You might as well say, "Why should she have to show kindness?" or "Why should she have to show patience?"

And if you really believe people shouldn't have to harbor those qualities, you are as big of a monster as Donald Trump.

by Anonymousreply 236September 2, 2022 7:25 PM

Your concern is noted, r236

by Anonymousreply 237September 2, 2022 7:27 PM

R235? HUH????????? where have you been? commentators even the damn stadium lighting screen itself is said "greatest of all time" ... I bet if you watched each day of the Open and Serena's name mentioned you would hear her being called the greatest of all time at least 10 plus times a day from various quarters.

by Anonymousreply 238September 2, 2022 7:27 PM

She’s the Tonya Harding of tennis.

by Anonymousreply 239September 2, 2022 7:39 PM

Tell me you failed the Miller Analogies Test without telling me you failed the Miller Analogies Test, r239

by Anonymousreply 240September 2, 2022 7:41 PM

R240 he's a stupid ass, low iq, probable racist.

by Anonymousreply 241September 2, 2022 8:36 PM

What R238 said. R235, explain why everyone calls Serena The GOAT if you feel that way.

[quote]martina was 86-1 in 1983

A record that will never be broken because today's delicate ones don't play that much. Even young, Serena never played close to that much.

by Anonymousreply 242September 2, 2022 8:45 PM

R242... don't forget also playing doubles in 1983 (and every year for that matter) the entire year as well...

by Anonymousreply 243September 2, 2022 11:42 PM

She’s the Tonya Harding of tennis because she’s a brutish, muscular athlete without a single moment of physical grace, refinement or sportsmanship. She wins, but she’s an ungracious and trashy oaf.

Was that too hard for you to understand?

by Anonymousreply 244September 3, 2022 12:23 AM

Can’t take that grunting.

by Anonymousreply 245September 3, 2022 1:31 AM

R244, yes it was very hard for me to understand you stupid fkin bitch. Because Serena has never hired a hoodlum to physically assault and take out her opponents. Serena has never cheated; she was never 2nd best or the ugly duckling who just couldn't accept she wasn't good enough.

I hope that explains things, cunt.

by Anonymousreply 246September 3, 2022 1:35 AM

She's done.

by Anonymousreply 247September 3, 2022 2:27 AM

Ding dong, the witch is dead.

by Anonymousreply 248September 3, 2022 2:36 AM

Serena is despicable and nasty. Good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 249September 3, 2022 2:52 AM

Bye Felicia Serena!

by Anonymousreply 250September 3, 2022 2:54 AM

I think the celebration and veneration of celebrities are similar to pagan deities of old. There is someone who is particularly excellent and why not say they embody some spiritual principle that you want your family or offspring to embody, the same way that your hero does.

They are public and it's easy to participate in the adoration ritual. They don't require sacrifice other than attention. They are genuinely inspirational. You might keep icons of them in your home or your child's room.

They're called "role models" and Serena has embraced this wholeheartedly and she's got every bit of my respect. It's not an easy role to carry but she's willing.

She might be an actual Goddess.

by Anonymousreply 251September 3, 2022 2:59 AM

[quote]Wasn't there another sister once? What happened to her?

Yes. Yetunde Price, who was slain during a gang shootout in Compton on Sunday, September 14, 2003.

R252 I the poster is referring to Venus.

by Anonymousreply 253September 3, 2022 3:37 AM

r253 I know.

I was mostly being tongue-in-cheek since the majority don't even know they had a sister that was murdered.

by Anonymousreply 254September 3, 2022 3:41 AM

[quote]She might be an actual Goddess

YIKES

by Anonymousreply 255September 4, 2022 3:36 PM

Someone is very sad that some of us think she’s a nasty racist brute. No one put those words in her mouth to try and smear her. No one forced her to be a grandstanding asshole and poor sport.

But she’s black and a woman, so I’m racist and misogynist for not worshiping her. Fine.

by Anonymousreply 256September 4, 2022 7:12 PM

R256 stfu you disingenuous ho. No one made such an accusation. But many of the comments here are racist.

by Anonymousreply 257September 4, 2022 7:56 PM

You have many problems, R257, including so many STFU comments on this thread. If you don't like us - LEAVE.

by Anonymousreply 258September 4, 2022 11:12 PM

Why don't you leave, bottom-feeding racist? DL existed long before it was infested by the likes of you.

by Anonymousreply 259September 5, 2022 12:21 AM

Are really at the point that NO ONE can say anything wrong about Serena for any reason and if we do so we are AUTOMATICALLY racist?

by Anonymousreply 260September 5, 2022 12:32 AM

R259 = mental health issues, see an MD

by Anonymousreply 261September 5, 2022 1:29 AM

R260 yea because most have proven they cannot criticize Serena without making racist inflammatory remarks about her figure or the african-american sportsmanship.

by Anonymousreply 262September 5, 2022 1:39 PM

The original OPs thread is gray and lined out for a reason. You Mary's be well. I'm gone. I would say you all fuck each other but you are all bottoms.

by Anonymousreply 263September 5, 2022 1:40 PM

R262.. those that do are in the vast MINORITY....

by Anonymousreply 264September 5, 2022 2:18 PM

[quote] [R260] yea because most have proven they cannot criticize Serena without making racist inflammatory remarks about her figure or the african-american sportsmanship.

What is “African-American sportsmanship”?

Is it making racist comments about your opponent and threatening to hurt them? I see.

by Anonymousreply 265September 5, 2022 2:45 PM

After Frances Tiafoe's thrilling quarterfinal win Wed, the nitwit commentators BROUGHT UP Serena's name again, like she had something to do with it. Frances was a screwup until very recently, his success at this years US Open was the result of training and hard on-court work. Can he have his moment without bringing Serena into it???
