Lesbians and masculinity
Why do so many lesbians look so manly? I realize that their haircuts, clothing, lack of cosmetics etc contribute to their masculine appearance, but it goes deeper than that. So many of them don't have feminine facial features they often look more like young men. The same is true of their bodies. I rarely see lesbians with curves. They seem to be flat chested and boxy shaped. Perhaps clothing creates an illusion, but I don't think so. It seems like they have hormonal issues or something.
I'm not being a smartass and I'm not talking about trans. I'm really curious about this subject and always have found it odd. It seems like nature made it very clear they would be lesbians. Does anybody else think this? I don't see a parallel with gays so what's up?

natural butches tend to have bigger titties. It's more of nature's joke.
the itty bitty titty committee tend to be femme poseurs when they claim butch and try to appear androgyne. ..
while fatties of all stripes tend to side with nonbinary while the anti-trans+++ lot will scream they are what real women look like without the male gaze and merely seeking to abolish gender which is patriarchy.. and desperately trying to look like the patriarchy because looking feminine attracts the patriarchy because masculinity is toxic but therefore because they're wiminin waman wombyn.. it's feminine though feminine and masculine are those terms of gender we're seeking to abolish.

My husband (a straight man) has a related question. He says if he were gay he would want a masculine, hairy, manly man. If he were a lesbian he would want a super-pretty, girly woman. Some comments seemed beside the point here. It's not in question that femme lesbians exist. The question is that if you claim you don't like men, you don't find them attractive and even detest them, why would you either become a caricature of a man or date women who are as manly as possible? I know many lesbians who fit this profile.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 2, 2022 8:42 AM

Because the stereotype of men is ease of life.
They wear clothes that suit their lifestyle. I'm a lesbian (not butch) and my interests skew 'masculine.'
Therefore, I'll wear leather pants while riding my motorcycle, and many lesbians cut their hair short so it doesn't get tangled. Maybe they have typically masculine jobs, so short hair is easier to manage. Many of my friends play sport so short hair is easier. Make up is a pain if you train a lot, or again - work a blue-collar job.
So it's not especially about copying men, more that there's a reason men dress the way they do for the lifestyle they have.

R33, I agree. Long hair takes a lot of work; just washing it and drying it every other day takes a chunk of time. Wearing dresses and skirts means more effort, more time; you have to shave regularly and probably lotion and maybe pantyhose, depending on where you work. Most of the clothes for women are binding and uncomfortable; especially if you don’t fit the normal female size range.
I’m 5”9, and a size 12; most female shirts, even in my size, barely goes past my belly button. I have no interest in my midriff being exposed, just because I reached above my head. Pants means I don’t need to shave my legs. Loafers means I’m comfortable, my shoes do not pinch and squeeze my feet. I love a good loafer and spend a lot on them. Short clean nails are a must for me; I hate the long garish fake ones; I was raised in a religious conservative household. That means loud noticeable makeup was not encouraged; I don’t wear makeup usually, but on the few occasions I do it’s flesh tone, no makeup makeup.
None of this has anything to do with looking like a man or being butch. Women, yes lesbians are women, dress for their lives. It’s not about look at me, being attractive or attracting attention; it’s about being comfortable. Not just in your body, but in your life.

Many gay men and lesbians are not necessarily gender nonconforming. Rather they aren't enslaved to gender stereotypes like straight people are. Gender stereotypes mainly exist for mating. Straight men are attracted to women who are soft and nurturing who they can protect. Straight women are attracted to men who are dominant and resilient who can protect them.
Gay men aren't attracted to women and lesbians aren't to men. So they have no reason to be overboard on ideas of masculinity and femininity. Straight people go overboard because they need to compete for mates and it becomes secondary nature after years. Bisexuals are even worse about it because many want to hide their homosexual side and present as straight. Hence why bisexual men act more hyper macho than straight men do.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 3, 2022 4:40 PM

So more straight woman would dress like dykes if they didn't want to attract men or fit in with other straight women. A lot of tomboys often grow up to be more feminine because of the fact they are attracted to the opposite sex. When they're little girls, they don't care about it. Same reason straight boys who are girly when young butch it up and deepen their voices once they notice girls
Gays and lesbians subconsciously know they don't need to do this and thus remain on the androgynous side. Not due to wanting to mimic the opposite sex

The OP is on to something though. Why is it that Butch Lesbians are sort of worshiped or even chased after in Lesbian culture over not butch? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Like how straight acting gay men tend to be more appealing then fem gay men. Gay men are attracted to masculinity but with lesbians, they dont do the same with femininity, they also seem to be attracted to masculinity.
And you have to actively work at it to be a butch lesbian. Cut your hair really short, buy clothes in men's stores etc. In contrast, Gay men who are fem usually cant help it and pretend to be more masculine like growing a beard, pretending to like watching sports.

I have a very utilitarian and practical approach to my look. It just so happens that the vast majority of clothing, accessories, etc. for women are the antithesis of that.
I had a "femme" phase for about 4 years and it was exhausting. I had to wake up an hour earlier just to "put my face on." I had to get shellac/gel on my nails, which I had to keep short because I play an instrument, because chipped polish is a pet peeve of mine, that got expensive. The pants were suffocating and most didn't have pockets. And because I'm mildly OCD, if I'm going to do something, I'm determined to do it correctly. So, I became very particular about being "in season" with fashion, properly accessorizing, and wearing colors that complemented my "undertones," I basically turned into Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl when it came to fashion and it was the most exhausting, impractical, and vapid 4 years of my existence.
I've always been a tomboy but wanted to just try something "new." The proverbial nail in the coffin was the attention I was getting from men which is something I, personally, cannot handle or stand. The bottom line, I dress for comfort and convenience. It just so happens that men's and masculine fashion caters more to that need. Perhaps women's fashion designers should take note and change that.

Most gay men do prefer masculine men. Fem guys have a hard time actually attracting other men. Seems like butch Lesbians dont have this issue. Every butch lesbian I have even know from work and social groups all have a partner.
Also if you think dildos don't resemble penises, then you have never seen one. There's a reason dildos are not advertised on TV in front of kids. They resemble a penis.

In "Rubyfruit Jungle", Rita Mae Browne's lesbian coming of age novel. the young Molly Bolt goes into a lesbian bar, where she sees all these butch, masculine women. She's repelled by them; her view is that the whole point of being a lesbian is that you love WOMEN. And that if she wanted a man she'd get a real one, not a woman who looks like one. She was totally correct; if you're into women, why would you want to be with a woman who looks and acts like a man?

90% of the time, those "hot femme ones" the butch lesbians are with are bisexual. From my experience, femme lesbians typically want other femme lesbians.
I'm masculine presenting, and that's one of the catch-22s. While presenting this way (mostly) wards off straight men, it also tends to ward off femme lesbians. The advances of men make me very [bold]very[/bold] uncomfortable...as in, abnormally so (I acknowledge this). It's a long story, but I just get a feeling of deep sadness and discomfort when they do it. So, I'm not comfortable being feminine. I prefer to be "ugly" so they, specifically, will leave me alone. The average gay man is not better looking, I know a lot of fugly gay men. That's really an old cliche about gay men. If anything, you might see that gay men tend to take better care of their looks than straight men. Doing so is considered a fem trait. So to no surprise those gays who take it way beyond the earths natural limit also tend to be the most fem in the crowd.
The converse is true for lesbians. With the tendency towards butchness comes the lack of interest in good skin care, hair style, good manners and fashion. The more fem a lesbian, the more "traditionally" beautiful they tend to be.

I believe that the poster didn't mean to say that lesbians don't need titties cause tits are men's toys, but that it is ironic that butch lesbians who try to look and act like men were endowed with big tits.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Well, no it's not. In the advertising world there are certain looks that sell products. High cheekbones, symmetrical faces, small noses, full lips, etc. That's what is meant by "traditional beauty". A woman who walks into the room and 90% would say wow, she's beautiful. Not some ugly dog you just have a fetish for. Good for you, everyone needs someone, maybe she even turns you on but that's not what is considered classic beauty.
and many lesbians cut their hair short so it doesn't get tangled. Maybe they have typically masculine jobs, so short hair is easier to manage
It is really not about the short hair. Feminine women are equally feminine and attractive with short hair, pretty girls even more cause it pronounces their facial features (think about Halle Berry or Lady Diana). Just as there was nothing effeminate about guys from Guns and roses because of long hairs.
You people that connect hairstyle with femininity/masculinity are really provincial.
My husband (a straight man) has a related question. He says if he were gay he would want a masculine, hairy, manly man. If he were a lesbian he would want a super-pretty, girly woman. His point is that if he were a person who is attracted to the same gender, he would go for the ultra sterotype of that gender.
Lesbians could say the same about your husband. If they were a straight man they would go for ultrafeminine, sweet and pretty girl that is so much easier for a straight men to catch, because of abundance of straight women and not some frau DLer.

Oh for fuck sake, short hair on woman usually signals Lesbo. Yes, a lot of straight woman have short hair. There's a certain cut that lesbians go for that is not just short. But guess what, I happen to know two straight woman with short hair styles and BOTH were assumed to be gay. On was hit on right in front of me, the other was called names at a couples resort.

R108 To most people "hot = beautiful" And if you're in love, you perceive your significant other as far more attractive than they actually are. While I agree there are universal aspects of beauty mainly related to symmetry, health, youth and fertility. Most people aren't sitting around analyzing the science of beauty. Most people think whoever they are intensely attracted to is beautiful. Regardless of if that person is conventional or not. Most people also think their children or pets are the most beautiful ever.
Also there's many people who are beautiful objectively who just aren't sexually attractive. A lot of sexual attraction is charisma and confidence. Nice and funny people get laid a lot for instance. Human attraction is very complex.

The only demographic sincerely bothered by what women are or are not fucking are straight incels which is what you're starting to come off as with this nonsense. A gay man couldn't care less how women of any orientation are getting off. This is an odd thing for a so-called gay man to be concerned with. Just saying.

You don't seem to get it. Gay men don't get off with some sex toy that looks like a women's breast for example. Or smoothed out so we can clam it not really a breast shape. Dildos are meant to look like a man's penis. For straight or bi woman to get off on this it makes sense, for lesbians it does not.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | September 9, 2022 9:50 PM

I really don't think it's odd for lesbians to get off using a fake penis. The penis is designed to go into the vagina. They aren't imaging men while pleasuring themselves or each other. Women have clitorises.
Gay men don't need a fake pussy because the ass (with lube) and mouth is sufficient enough.

r121 Again, why do you, a supposed gay man, give a fuck how women, lesbians or not, are getting themselves off? That's what doesn't make sense, here. The arguments you are using about lesbians are textbook for pissed straight incel who can't stand that even more women exist who won't fuck him. This is not a normal topic for a sincerely gay man to concern himself with. So, I'm not entirely sure you're a reliable source for what sex toys "all gay men" use to get themselves off, either.
Everything about you is weird, here, sir.

To top this off, to say some mess like "the thing that fits in vagina canal is penis" is homophobic to gay men as well which is also what makes you sus. You're, inversely, implying that men should be fucking vagina "just because it fits." Do you not see the problem and double-standard? You're seriously trying to police women's bodies and how they choose to get off. Another straight incel tactic.
"Muh...if you don't like dick then why are you using dick-shaped dildos??" As if we haven't heard that homophobic bullshit before. Dildos aren't men you goddamn moron. You are. We don't want you or that sad and, no doubt neglected, appendage swinging between your legs. Deal with it.

Some people on this site are weird and stupid or trolls that think they're funny. I'm a gay man and even I understand why lesbians use dildos because the clitoris has to be stimulated by penetration and the penis shape is best designed for that. Are lesbians not supposed to climax now? It has nothing to do with wanting a real penis attached to a man. By that logic straight men who use butt flashlights are gay.
And to further my point, obviously men, straight or gay, don't even need fake vaginas or assholes to climax. The penis is external and easily can be pleasured using a hand and some lube. It takes men a much shorter time to come. It's a bit harder to women to pleasure themselves with just their hands and the process can take longer, so not as comfortable.
R34 None of this has anything to do with looking like a man or being butch. Women, yes lesbians are women, dress for their lives. It’s not about look at me, being attractive or attracting attention; it’s about being comfortable. Not just in your body, but in your life.
I agree with your post. If a woman is going to spend the evening alone at home, she doesn’t shave her legs and haul out the makeup kit. Those things are to attract approval from others.
The lesbians I know are more natural, in a “see me for the way I am” kind of way. There’s less artifice, more of a relaxed and stripped down appearance. They want a deeper, more natural connection.
A few of my lesbian friends enjoy makeup and frilly things when they go to an event, but it’s almost like a flirty, sex play thing. It’s a part of them, but not their whole day, every day.

In 1995 the word gay was often used to include lesbians and bisexuals. At times it still is used that way. I head Brandi Carlile on the radio recently and she referred to herself as gay.

My best friends are lesbians (2 different couples.) They’re very accepting, supportive, and non competitive. I can relax around them.
They’re also feminist (each to a different degree) which means they’ve spent time looking at the world and measuring how what we do and say effects each other. A lot of men never invest in developing that broader view.

So funny you mention that. One couple has the kind of huge, pull down screen that has cable connected to it for watching movies, the others have an enormous flatscreen TV.
Strangely, they both have apple trees in their back yards, too. I make apple crisps at their houses.
