Neville Longbottom SLAMS Air Canada: "Worst airline in North Amerca"

"Harry Potter" actor Matthew Lewis has criticized airline Air Canada, saying he was kicked him out of first class just before he boarded a flight and had his ticket ripped up.

"Air Canada is the worst airline in North America. And that's saying something," Lewis, known for his role as Neville Longbottom in the "Harry Potter" film franchise, tweeted on Friday.

Lewis wrote in a following tweet that the airline moved him from first class to an economy seat when he was at the gate. He said staff tore his ticket up without giving him an explanation other than that the flight was full.

Lewis said in the tweet that staff advised him to go to customer service, but when he asked where it was, they said it was located in Toronto, Canada. He said he was in Orlando, Florida, at the time.

"Honestly never experienced anything like it. I've been bumped before. Comes with the territory. But at the gate, less than two minutes to boarding and without explanation or apology? Never." Lewis wrote in a separate tweet.

Air Canada responded to Lewis's tweet, saying it "regrets hearing" about his situation and told him to send the airline a message with details of the problem.

Air Canada didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

The airline said in a statement to CTV News Toronto on Friday that the situation was under review and declined to comment further.

Lewis is one of many thousands of passengers who have had to deal with travel disruption this summer.

Airlines have struggled to cope with the increase in travel demand while experiencing a staff shortage, leading to many flight cancellations, delays, and even reports of lost luggage and passengers being booked on the wrong flight.

We’ve seen this happen before when airlines bump someone out of first class to make room for a politician or VIP (bigger than Lewis).

He should have taken a photo of whoever was given his seat and posted it.

Yeah, I think he meant boarding pass. Same thing, though.

The machines do print out paper boarding passes/tickets, so that's what the assholes at Air Canada ripped up.

Which is really obnoxious, if you ask me.

Air Canada doesn't like losers, Neville.

Customer service for any airline or business can be reached online, by telephone, email and especially Twitter where it is very easy to resolve things quickly.

Something about his story sounds off.

by Anonymousreply 17August 31, 2022 5:07 AM

Air Canada is terrible but obviously something happened for them to rip up the ticket.

by Anonymousreply 18August 31, 2022 5:15 AM

[quote] Yeah, I think he meant boarding pass. Same thing, though.

No, a ticket is definitely not a boarding pass.

by Anonymousreply 19August 31, 2022 1:21 PM

My coworker’s daughter and some friends got grounded in Toronto for a couple days because of Air Canada. Was this past summer. Cost the daughter an additional $700+ in hotel costs. Nothing from Air Canada but regrets.

by Anonymousreply 20August 31, 2022 1:26 PM

It sounds like the airline downgraded him from first class to economy. Legally, all they are required to do is get you to your destination. And they should refund the price difference from first to coach, assuming he actually paid for it and wasn’t given a status upgrade. If he chose not to fly rather than sit in economy, then that’s on him.

And they ripped up his ticket, just for added dramatic effect.

Because it was more fun to add insult to injury.

Who carries a “ticket”, or even a boarding pass? Use the mobile app.

I don't have or want a smart phone so yes, I print out a ticket and boarding pass.

by Anonymousreply 25August 31, 2022 2:10 PM

I'm like you, R25.

But I just get my ticket emailed to me, and then I print out a boarding pass at the airport.

It's funny because people think that using your phone as a boarding pass makes you so "modern" and tech saavy, but from what I've seen at boarding gates, it's always the assholes with the boarding passes on their phones, that hold up the line.

There's always some fucking issue with someone using their phone as a boarding pass. Either it doesn't scan correctly, or whatever.

And they ALWAYS hold up the line.

Me? I just scan my good old fashioned paper ticket in one second, and it's done.

So screw these assholes who think that a phone boarding pass is so sophisticated. Really, it's not.

[quote]Something about his story sounds off.

I kind of think so too; I wonder if possibly he didn't get the *stah* treatment he felt that he merited & put the airlines on blast in the hope of getting future flights comped. But if he didn't get what he paid for, it seems as simple as working with customer service to at least get some kind of credit

by Anonymousreply 27August 31, 2022 2:17 PM

I have no more idea what happened here than anyone else, but when they print out a new boarding pass for you, either because of an upgrade or other seating change, they hand you the new one and always rip up the old one to avoid confusion. That isn't necessarily hostile. What's missing is the explanation for the downgrade. Maybe there was a change of equipment and he was the last to be upgraded, so now he's back in coach. Who can say.

by Anonymousreply 28August 31, 2022 2:21 PM

He was in Orlando? What did he expect?

by Anonymousreply 29August 31, 2022 2:22 PM

He probably had an upgrade of some sort. Notice he didn't say his "first-class ticket" which implies it was paid for. Thousands of travelers were screwed over this summer with worse problems than getting bumped to economy.

This guy has nothing good to say about Air Canada.

Also, this comment stood out to me:

[quote] As a Canadian who was forced to fly only Air Canada (I worked for a Crown Corporation) I watched this video with a small grin on my face. The ATTITUDE you experienced is NOT a rare, one off occurance...it reflects the overall attitude of the Corporation and it's employees...that is why their rival WestJet has grown so rapidly in the past few years !

Dear Canada: the world expects better of you; I know you may be influenced by the loud, rude, pushy MAGA ways of your neighbor to the south, but don't give in to it! Please continue to be the pleasant, polite (albeit kind of dull) country that the world loves. (PS - no one really holds the Neville Longbottom thing against you since he's probably a self-important jerk anyway)

by Anonymousreply 37September 12, 2022 9:51 AM

"Who carries a “ticket”, or even a boarding pass? Use the mobile app."

This is not a seasoned traveler. Always have a paper copy of your ticket if you can manage it. Your boarding pass on your mobile app can be automatically updated to downgrade you. If you can manage to keep your paper ticket from being ripped, you can always try to negotiate it with the agent at the desk when you board.

If you’ve been downgraded…the printer spits out a new boarding pass with your new inferior seat when the gate agent scans your original paper pass.

by Anonymousreply 39September 12, 2022 8:44 PM

I'm confused.

Did he PAY for a first class ticket, but got downgraded to coach - which, of course, would require a huge refund, or did some star struck twink gate agent upgrade him from coach for free, then when a paying customers wanted the seat, he got downgraded.

by Anonymousreply 40September 12, 2022 9:35 PM

R27, something usually sounds off about these tales of terrible customer service because the offended party can mouth off and tell whatever lies they want, but the airline/store/hotel/restaurant has to be more restrained.

When, if ever, the full story is revealed, it always turns out to be much more complicated than the screaming Karen claimed. Usually, the customer was behaving like an asshole, and the employees overreacted or mishandled the situation.

by Anonymousreply 41September 12, 2022 10:22 PM

Getting bumped to economy for sure sucks, but MARY it's not the end of the world. Getting your entire flight cancelled is way worse.

That said, I do hate Air Canada so I'm not upset about him attacking them. Horrendous airline.
