How weird. It's almost as if racial prejudice is a proxy for class prejudice.

Historically The US didn't have a deeply entrenched class system. It was based on the chattel slave system. Blacks and Natives were automatically the lowest class. This included even mixed race people who were included as part of the underclass due to hypodescent laws. In Latin America and the Caribbean the class system was racial but mixed populations were the middle class similar to South Africa. The African American upperclass was historically light skinned and descendants of the mixed race free people of color who had connections from white relatives or even passed for white in some circumstances.

What's happening now is due to the rise of new money mainly investors, athletes and movie stars who made a lot of money between the 1970s to 2000s but came from working class homes of various backgrounds like black, Jewish, Italian, Arab, etc. They still have a strong victim mentality and perceive themselves as still part of their underclass roots. They ignore they are now part of the upperclass that is oppressive to the poor of all colors. They replaced the historical upperclass and old money Anglo and Dutch families who are irrelevant now.

Not true! The US has always had a class system, but there used to be much more social mobility and much less of a financial gap between the rich and the poor, but there was always a class system and oppression based on social class. But anyone who could buy a slave or rape the teenaged maid could feel the comfortable glow of being part of the oppressor class.

I'm convinced that we humans still have the instincts of the social animals, and even though we no longer pick the fleas out of each other's fur the way our ancestors did, and the social animal's instinctive need to gain status within the social group drives a lot of our behavior. From people flaunting expensive "designer" purses they can't afford to persecuting illegal immigrants to joining the fucking KKK, the desire to feel superior and to engage in dominance behaviors is still in us.
