Rolex Daytonas Fall

Popularized by Paul Newman and today worn by such celebrities as Jay Z, Victoria Beckham, and Michael Jordan;

The Daytona has been in continuous production since 1963 and a no-frills Daytona costs $14,550. It is a nice steel watch with a built-in chronograph (stopwatch) and an all-mechanical (not quartz) movement.

Just before the Pandemic Crisis (December 2019), they were going for about $21,000 (44 percent over retail).

A year later (December 2020), the price was slightly higher ($22,000).

In 2021, Daytona prices increased quickly and reached $40,000 (170 pct above retail) in March 2022.

Now, prices are starting to drop. A Daytona can be yours for about $36,000.

I don't understand the culture of "designer watches" in the age of the smartphone, when no one really needs a watch.

In my limited experience the people who still spend enormous amounts of money collecting these things tend to be complete a-holes. Not sure why that is.

A good watch is work of art and people still collect art.

I own a Rolex and an iwatch and wear them on different occasions.

I got my father's gold Rolex.

These days, I never wear it out in public because I'm concerned about being robbed. It's too valuable to me to risk.

Not all Rolexes are cool. Which kind? And it doesn't count unless you buy it.

R1 too much money and not enough sense, basically.

Like R1, I too, don’t get the allure of super expensive watches that are made just type super expensive.

People just like to be separated from their money.

Type = to be ^

Rolex watches, like LV bags, are pretty meaningless these days. Even trashy.

There are sooo many fakes and the "rappers" who wear them (real or not) have cheapened the brand.

I see a lot of Rolex watches and LV bags on the subway paired with cheap shoes and Korean weaves.

Classy with a K.

Aren't those just a bit démodé? Also, R8 - Yes

But if a white guy like Bezos or Zuckerberg wore them it would be cool?

Victoria Beckham wearing something is suppose to impress me?

"Oh wow, I didn't know Victoria Beckham owned that watch. She's a style icon and a truly interesting person. If it's good enough for a titan of industry like Victoria Beckham then it's good enough for me".

The face on the Daytona has 3 smaller dials on it. Looks cluttered, IMO. Rather have a simpler watch face. Rolexes supposedly (depending on which one, I guess) have good resale value.

by Anonymousreply 12August 31, 2022 2:03 AM

I love watches. My partner collects them ("invests") and if you don't understand them, didn't grow up with them, it can't really be explained.

The craftsmanship of a good watch and horological value is about so much more than the trend or price.
