I know we need it to grow things and that my body even needs it but I truly hate the sun. I don’t like being out in it, I don’t like it shining in my windows and I’m glad every night when it sets. It gives me headaches and rashes too. I wish everyday was overcast. Are there any other sun haters on dl?
I really hate the sun

I had to have a tire repaired today by this low-budget hole in the wall shop. There was no place to sit but on some steps in the blazing 90* heat. I longed for a bracing February breeze.

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere.

I live in the south and being outside is like being smothered from humidity. I agree, OP. The heat and humidity are deadly.

I don't hate it, R1, and sunny days make me feel happier on a primitive level, but I get you. I would love a house in the shade, behind trees, and I especially do not like walking in the sun. I also don't like to turn on a lot of lights in the house. I just don't enjoy having things brightly lit.

I laughed at first read, but I’m more or less the same. I think it’s the societal pressure also, that you have to be doing things every second of the day when it’s nice out. I don’t mind gloomy. However, I also don’t like cold weather.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 29, 2022 5:42 AM |
I hate the sun too. I love rainy foggy days. This whole summer has been one long heat wave. I live in NorCal north of Sac. We are facing yet another heat wave this coming week. It has been endless. Over 100 every day.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 29, 2022 5:54 AM |
Same, OP.
I’m very pale and burn easily, and my eyes are very light-blue and therefore oversensitive to the sun.
Sweating is something I truly loathe, too. Too many sunny days in a row make me go stir crazy.
Yesterday was a day I would describe as the best of days: It was rainy and cool, yet warm enough to go out wearing just a thin jacket.

I don't hate the sun, but I hate what lengths we have to go to to avoid it. I will never understand people who love open windows, no drapes, no blinds, letting the sun in. It's why I don't stay at other people's houses. I can never tell if I will have to wake up to a blinding sun.
I do love overcast and rainy days. Especially on the weekends when I can sleep in. I love thunderstorms. I find them calming, actually.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 29, 2022 6:35 AM |
The sun, and then the heat/humidity are two different things.
OP and other true sun haters know the difference.
It’s not the heat or humidity, it’s the never ending rays of radiation that just sizzle and a scorch down to the bone. It feels like it’s eating through your skin and eyes and that your hair could catch on fire.
And it’s not just hot days. That hateful, relentless sun just keeps going and going and frying up everything in site. Just wish that thing would take a break now and then.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 29, 2022 6:42 AM |
I also think maybe the sun is somehow magnified or something it seems more intense that it did 20 years ago.
I just don’t remember running for cover like this from shade to shade fearing combustion from the sun beams in between.

OP, I love everything that you said! Yes, I absolutely hate it both for psychological and physical reasons. I am from LA and I am WHITE, blond hair and blue eyes. My people are probably potato farmers in Scotland and Ireland. I have to slather sunscreen, I can never get a tan, and I naturally sweat profusely. I do love swimming in the pool and ocean, but then I need to be in shade immediately. Now I live in foggy, cold San Francisco and I LOVE the weather. I love the cold, grey walks on the beach.
From a psychological level, sun means work, sun means having to do shit. When the sun goes down, so do my responsibilities. I can relax. I love being outside during a warm evening. If I go to Palm Springs, I love to swim at night naked and look up at the stars.
It feels likes it hotter everywhere. When I was a kid in the 80's/90's LA was warm in the summer, but it wasn't boiling like it is today. I can't even think about the rest of the country, the humidity of it all, the wet feeling the minute you step outside with that 90 degree heat vaporizing you.

I love the sun -- and it's a good thing I do, because I live in FL. You just have to slap plenty of sunscreen on your face before you go outside and wear a baseball cap (yes, I'm a lesbian) and light-colored clothing in the summer.
In the wintertime here, sometimes it's cloudy and rains for two or three days straight like it does all the fucking time in my home state of PA. People here are so used to sunshine all the time (except for an hour mid-afternoon in the summer) that they get depressed when it's cloudy/raining. Me personally, I hate the rain.

Hate the sun. Hate the heat. Hate humidity. Love the rain. Love thunderstorms (though I have to worry seriously about all the big trees around my house.) Would love everyday to be overcast and breezy.
Part of it is the expectation that one must be outside and doing something sporty when the sun is shining; that's just not me. Conversely, when it's raining, I can stay inside and read or watch movies, without guilt.
That's been the case for my entire life and now it's compounded by the fact that I have M.S., and heat just decimates me and many other people with M.S. It's one reason that I've moved back to the North East and welcome cold weather.
Spring, and especially Fall, makes me very, very happy.
Yeah, I really hate the sun.

OP, you are my people. When I was young, I loved hot, sunny days because that meant the beach or pool. Now that I'm older, I hate it. I also love cold rainy or snowy overcast days in the Fall and Winter, where I can cozy up in front of the fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa watching movies or series, or reading a good book, especially around Holiday season, like Halloween and Christmas (and I really get depressed when Christmas Day is sunny!). The above weather conditions make me so happy, while sunny days now make me depressed.

Loathe the sun. I've got reverse seasonal affective disorder. Direct sunlight almost feels aggressive. My sunglasses are so dark they're almost like the paper ones you get after you have your eyes dilated.
Even when I worked in an office with two windows I'd keep them shut, refuse to turn on the overheads, and brought in two table lamps and a desk lamp. My coworkers would joke that it looked like I worked in a cocktail lounge, which was fine with me.
I can't even imagine going to one of those big music festivals like Coachella or Jazzfest. Give me a darkened indoor venue every time.

I burn easily, and am susceptible to melanoma, having had three removals from my face over the past decade.

You’ve been staring too long at that Bob Ross print in your living room, R81.
On another note, I am really baffled by some of the complete revulsion towards the sun—especially if you don’t have actual health issues with sunlight. Seeing it as very repulsive isn’t healthy or normal. The sun is bodacious!
That being said, I do enjoy intense thunderstorms, a steady downpour, and the occasional blustery, dark and dreary day. I find them soothing and therapeutic, but I could never perpetually wallow in them.

I HATE it. Most people get the blues during winter. It's summer for me. It also makes me depressed as it's too fucking hot to go anywhere or do anything unless it's indoors and well, Covid ruined that indoor shit for me in summer. It was 107 here in Burbank CA and I just stayed in with all my blinds closed. I cleaned the house then made a big salad for dinner. I can't even go on a bike ride it's too hot.
I hate sweating unless I'm working out. Just sitting somewhere sweating for no reason is crazy. And I don't even like the beach during the day because there is no escaping the sun unless you have an ez up and I'm not buying one. When I was a kid, I used to burn so bad my skin would blister. No fun.

Yeah, these real estate freaks and their natural light obsession. My brother lives in Texas and almost all houses in his neighborhood have their blinds closed 24/7. When my parents visited they opened all the blinds to get some of that natural light and whenever my brother got home from work he immediately closed them all.
Seems like most people in the South are allergic to natural light and the sun.

[Quote] also think maybe the sun is somehow magnified or something it seems more intense that it did 20 years ago.
I think it’s lack of trees. The island I grew up on was heavily forested when I was a kid. Now it’s suburbia. I remember going to the beach and coming home in the car sunburned. The sun was dappled and I only felt the sunburn when stopped at a traffic light where the trees had been cleared. Once we started driving again, we were mostly in the shadow of trees again, so no burning skin.
Now I find the sunlight intolerable everywhere.
Nighttime in summer growing up was loud. Millions of crickets, beetles, moths, flying things. Not so many mosquitoes. I could hear all different kinds of owls and frogs. The air had a haze like a nice blanket. It was cooling. I swear it came from trees breathing.
It’s all gone now. So are the birds who used to eat the insects. People have lawn companies spray pesticides on their grass & in their trees. Towns spray pesticides everywhere to kill mosquitoes and to kill ticks so town workers don’t get Lyme disease. If you live in a place that’s not Mississippi-level poor (after being scammed by the rich) even sides of highways are sprayed with pesticides to “prevent Lyme disease among the 12 workers who might mow the side of road.

The glaring sun is why Madge sleeps during the day and hits the booze and pills at night. Perhaps you're an artiste, OP.

r110 Western NY has a TON of trees...in fact, they are known for their beautiful (if short) Fall displays of changing leaves.
But, lake effect snow is a real thing and the humidity during summer is oppressive.
I had planned to move back there this year/next year. Not sure what's going to happen with that at this point. Recently diagnosed with lupus and the sun is something I've always kind of shunned, now even more so because lupus sufferers are very sensitive to sunlight and can have extreme flare ups of the disease if exposed for even short amounts of time.

I always feel a sense of relief when the sun goes down.

R120- I'm kind of excited because on Friday the sun will set at 6:38 pm which is almost TWO hours earlier than sunset in late June.
