Renee Zellweger
Thoughts?
Underrated, solid actress.
According to Tyler Cone (an actor who worked with her on that Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie she did very early in her career) she's a lot more wild and unpretentious than her public image would suggest. At least back then.

I don’t know how she’s underrated. She has an Oscar, had her own blockbuster franchise, and was in a few critically acclaimed movie.

I just can't tolerate her voice or scrunched up face and lips for more than a very short time.

I am a big fan of her acting. I haven't seen Judy because I have an affinity for Judy Garland for some reason and biopics are usually procedural and ultimately crappy movies, but I've seen most of her movies and I think she's really spectacular.
She first really stood out to me, no surprise, with Chicago. I did think she was odd looking and Catherine Zeta-Jones stole most of her scenes, singing better and dancing better, although Renee's performance was outstanding. Then I got the soundtrack and the more I listened, the more I really appreciated Renee's vocal performance. Then I watched the movie again and realized she was the source of its magic.
She has been excellent in so many roles and so many different types of roles, always believable. And she's great with accents.
Other than being mean about her ethnically distinctive eyes, I don't really know what people can even come up with as an excuse not to like her. She does seem a little off kilter, like in that wacky award acceptance speech, but that makes me like her even more. People who aren't a little messy rub me the wrong way.
I am sad she succumbed to the bullying and had her eyes surgically changed. I don't see how calling her "Squinty" and telling jokes in which her Sami eye shape is the punchline is any different than old parodies of Asian people, like Mickey Rooney's mortifying Breakfast at Tiffany's performance.

I like her movies.
Remember when she was considered “ just the latest short, reasonably attractive girl opposite Tom” when Jerry McGuire came out? No one expected her to stick around let alone win awards. Good for her.

She was really good in The Thing About Pam. Scary, grotesque, sociopathic, and corny without ever going camp - it’s one of her great performances. It’s a very strong year for lead actress in a miniseries, limited series this year, otherwise I would have put her in the top in that category at the Emmys.

[quote] I haven't seen Judy because I have an affinity for Judy Garland for some reason and biopics are usually procedural and ultimately crappy movies
I enjoyed Judy the film. I can't say I remember it or it left an unforgettable imprint, but I enjoyed it. I know a number of people loathed it for a variety of reasons, because it imagined or overlooked certain historical elements, or because it didn't use Judy's voice. And certainly it's not the definitive film about Judy, which clearly the Judy Davis performance captured.
But Renee did very well. She did surprisingly well in the numbers where she sang, believable for end stage Judy. She was strongest in capturing the emotional moments - leaving her children behind to perform, the night out with a fan.
The original piece was a stage show and it was no better than a TV movie of the week in quality, but Renee held the whole thing together nicely. It was fiction based on a real event in the same way "The Crown" Is, but is not, an accurate depiction of Betty Windsor and her crew.

Great actress. I know little about her private life. She's of Sami descent, they are an indigenous northern European people. The remarks about her eyes are the typical racist bullshit thrown at anyone who doesn't have perfectly even and bland middle American features.

I think Tyler Cone (Barry from the Texas Chainsaw 4) might be gay. In interviews, he talks about dancing with Renee and singing "Grease" songs with her. He also pings in a fairly recent video interview on YouTube. He's like a gay Skeet Ulrich.

OP it's not surprising that she wasn't pretentious at the time she made "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation" considering she was a recent college graduate/nobody from small-town Texas. She was probably a pretty normal young woman. That being said, she does still strike me as someone who didn't let her fame get to her head much. She's always seemed fairly humble. I've always found her to be a reliable and versatile actress with a good deal of range. Equally good at drama and comedy. Her career really tanked at the end of the 2000s, but she had a big comeback with the Judy Garland biopic that was deserved. I have always thought there were some personal problems she's never disclosed that caused her career to grind to a halt.
As a side note, I absolutely *love* "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation". It is completely insane and an unsung camp classic. I know it's an agonizing watch for a lot of people, but I find the utter batshit nature of it incredibly entertaining. The character of Heather in it should be a DL icon. I bought the Blu-ray edition of it when it came out and have seen the interview OP references, but it's been awhile.

A former Harvey girl. She did successfully make a comeback after Harvey in the film Judy. So she may have some actual talent. But I guess she hates Hollywood life when she went back into hiding after her Oscar win.

I recently rewatched Bridget Jones's Diary for the first time in years and years. It'svstill formulaic feel-good fodder, but it is watchable almost entirely due to her performance. She really makes that character lovable. Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, though both very talented, don't really bring much to the movie at all IMO. Firth is at times charming, but Renee is what really sells the movie. I think her British accent is also spot-on, especially for a Texan.

What does this even mean? I've seen this comment repeated about different women here and it doesn't make any sense. What power do you think Harvey Weinstein had that endowed talentless women with talent when performing onscreen after pleasuring him? That's not how talent works—at all. Renée Zellweger has shown great talent throughout her movie career, Harvey Weinstein or no Harvey Weinstein. To suggest that she showed talent after Weinstein's career imploded suggests he magically endowed a talentless person with talent that should have evaporated when he went to prison. It makes no sense.

She is the absolute worst at giving award acceptance speeches.

She kind of did let fame go to her head. Her and McConaughey's agents tried to bury that Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie (if they weren't behind it directly, they at least stood by and let their agents do it ). The movie wound up having a super under the radar release. Also, according to Tyler Cone, Renee left him a weird, rambling message when he first moved out to LA. She gave him her manager's number. He called it and her manager just laughed and coldly dismissed Cone when he mentioned starring with her in the TCM movie. According to Robert Jacks (the gay man who played Leatherface in TCM 4 and was also friends with Blondie) Renee was pissed about that incident. Yet, not only did she not hook Cone up with connections, but refused to speak to him ever again. That is cold.

Underrated? She has two Oscars, dear. 99.999% of actresses have zero. I think you’re equating pickiness of projects and aging out with underrated. She works when she wants to and finds projects that suit her, and that’s difficult when you’re an actress of a certain age.

Always serviceable, except for that last quasi-action horror she did almost a decade before Judy. She was GREAT in Chicago. But can't look at her without seeing Tracy Ullman's parody, doing a press junket for a movie where she played a reporter sent to Iraq and suffered from "Chronic Narcissistic Squint." Low hanging fruit, but still funny.

Speaking of Tracy Ullman, I just rewatched “Bullets Over Broadway” recently and she is just hysterical in that. I loved the line where she makes a joke about breast-feeding her dog.
