Renee Zellweger

Thoughts?

Underrated, solid actress.

According to Tyler Cone (an actor who worked with her on that Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie she did very early in her career) she's a lot more wild and unpretentious than her public image would suggest. At least back then.

by Anonymousreply 56September 28, 2022 1:11 AM

scrunched up face, annoying whiny baby voice

by Anonymousreply 1August 28, 2022 3:01 PM

It's hard to think of her as underrated when she has two Academy Awards.

by Anonymousreply 2August 28, 2022 3:03 PM

I don’t know how she’s underrated. She has an Oscar, had her own blockbuster franchise, and was in a few critically acclaimed movie.

by Anonymousreply 3August 28, 2022 3:03 PM

My thought - she always looks like she's squinting like she just came out of a cave

by Anonymousreply 4August 28, 2022 3:04 PM

She really keeps her personal life under wraps.

by Anonymousreply 5August 28, 2022 3:11 PM

In the early 2000’s she was in everything, I suspected she was a Harvey girl

by Anonymousreply 6August 28, 2022 3:12 PM

I remember when she married her caregiver. You could almost see the light in her eyes. Almost.

I like that she's private. She was really good in Judy.

by Anonymousreply 8August 28, 2022 3:18 PM

R4 She's of Kven and Sámi descent (Northern Scandinavia):

I just can't tolerate her voice or scrunched up face and lips for more than a very short time.

I suspect she has bearded on more than one occasion.

I suspect she kept company with that beast Weinstein of her own volition.

by Anonymousreply 11August 28, 2022 3:28 PM

[QUOTE] She has an Oscar

She has TWO.

by Anonymousreply 12August 28, 2022 3:30 PM

She was married for a few seconds to a guy who appeared to be gay to everyone living in the galaxy.

by Anonymousreply 13August 28, 2022 3:53 PM

I am a big fan of her acting. I haven't seen Judy because I have an affinity for Judy Garland for some reason and biopics are usually procedural and ultimately crappy movies, but I've seen most of her movies and I think she's really spectacular.

She first really stood out to me, no surprise, with Chicago. I did think she was odd looking and Catherine Zeta-Jones stole most of her scenes, singing better and dancing better, although Renee's performance was outstanding. Then I got the soundtrack and the more I listened, the more I really appreciated Renee's vocal performance. Then I watched the movie again and realized she was the source of its magic.

She has been excellent in so many roles and so many different types of roles, always believable. And she's great with accents.

Other than being mean about her ethnically distinctive eyes, I don't really know what people can even come up with as an excuse not to like her. She does seem a little off kilter, like in that wacky award acceptance speech, but that makes me like her even more. People who aren't a little messy rub me the wrong way.

I am sad she succumbed to the bullying and had her eyes surgically changed. I don't see how calling her "Squinty" and telling jokes in which her Sami eye shape is the punchline is any different than old parodies of Asian people, like Mickey Rooney's mortifying Breakfast at Tiffany's performance.

by Anonymousreply 14August 28, 2022 3:56 PM

I like her movies.

Remember when she was considered “ just the latest short, reasonably attractive girl opposite Tom” when Jerry McGuire came out? No one expected her to stick around let alone win awards. Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 15August 28, 2022 4:21 PM

She sucks!

by Anonymousreply 16August 28, 2022 4:27 PM

T15. And that’s two more Oscars than Miss Cruise has ;or is ever likely to have).

by Anonymousreply 17August 28, 2022 4:34 PM

Overrated. Not one but TWO goddamn Oscars?! OMFG

by Anonymousreply 18August 28, 2022 4:37 PM

Solid, likable, picks interesting projects. I look forward to her performances.

by Anonymousreply 19August 28, 2022 4:55 PM

She was really good in The Thing About Pam. Scary, grotesque, sociopathic, and corny without ever going camp - it’s one of her great performances. It’s a very strong year for lead actress in a miniseries, limited series this year, otherwise I would have put her in the top in that category at the Emmys.

by Anonymousreply 20August 28, 2022 5:56 PM

OP, leave Renee alone.

by Anonymousreply 21August 28, 2022 6:05 PM

R10 I think he's very hot, too. They seem like a nice match.

by Anonymousreply 22August 28, 2022 6:06 PM

"Ant" is a god-awful name for a man! OMFG

by Anonymousreply 23August 28, 2022 6:12 PM

[quote] I haven't seen Judy because I have an affinity for Judy Garland for some reason and biopics are usually procedural and ultimately crappy movies

I enjoyed Judy the film. I can't say I remember it or it left an unforgettable imprint, but I enjoyed it. I know a number of people loathed it for a variety of reasons, because it imagined or overlooked certain historical elements, or because it didn't use Judy's voice. And certainly it's not the definitive film about Judy, which clearly the Judy Davis performance captured.

But Renee did very well. She did surprisingly well in the numbers where she sang, believable for end stage Judy. She was strongest in capturing the emotional moments - leaving her children behind to perform, the night out with a fan.

The original piece was a stage show and it was no better than a TV movie of the week in quality, but Renee held the whole thing together nicely. It was fiction based on a real event in the same way "The Crown" Is, but is not, an accurate depiction of Betty Windsor and her crew.

by Anonymousreply 24August 28, 2022 6:15 PM

Great actress. I know little about her private life. She's of Sami descent, they are an indigenous northern European people. The remarks about her eyes are the typical racist bullshit thrown at anyone who doesn't have perfectly even and bland middle American features.

by Anonymousreply 25August 28, 2022 6:25 PM

I think Tyler Cone (Barry from the Texas Chainsaw 4) might be gay. In interviews, he talks about dancing with Renee and singing "Grease" songs with her. He also pings in a fairly recent video interview on YouTube. He's like a gay Skeet Ulrich.

by Anonymousreply 26August 28, 2022 6:43 PM

OP it's not surprising that she wasn't pretentious at the time she made "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation" considering she was a recent college graduate/nobody from small-town Texas. She was probably a pretty normal young woman. That being said, she does still strike me as someone who didn't let her fame get to her head much. She's always seemed fairly humble. I've always found her to be a reliable and versatile actress with a good deal of range. Equally good at drama and comedy. Her career really tanked at the end of the 2000s, but she had a big comeback with the Judy Garland biopic that was deserved. I have always thought there were some personal problems she's never disclosed that caused her career to grind to a halt.

As a side note, I absolutely *love* "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation". It is completely insane and an unsung camp classic. I know it's an agonizing watch for a lot of people, but I find the utter batshit nature of it incredibly entertaining. The character of Heather in it should be a DL icon. I bought the Blu-ray edition of it when it came out and have seen the interview OP references, but it's been awhile.

by Anonymousreply 27September 11, 2022 7:33 AM

Always gave great head.

by Anonymousreply 28September 11, 2022 7:36 AM

I like her. Unproblematic, has always been pro-gay, seems polite in interviews, and was amazing in “Judy.”

by Anonymousreply 29September 11, 2022 7:36 AM

A former Harvey girl. She did successfully make a comeback after Harvey in the film Judy. So she may have some actual talent. But I guess she hates Hollywood life when she went back into hiding after her Oscar win.

by Anonymousreply 30September 11, 2022 7:51 AM

I recently rewatched Bridget Jones's Diary for the first time in years and years. It'svstill formulaic feel-good fodder, but it is watchable almost entirely due to her performance. She really makes that character lovable. Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, though both very talented, don't really bring much to the movie at all IMO. Firth is at times charming, but Renee is what really sells the movie. I think her British accent is also spot-on, especially for a Texan.

by Anonymousreply 31September 11, 2022 7:52 AM

[quote] A former Harvey girl. She did successfully make a comeback after Harvey in the film Judy. So she may have some actual talent.

What does this even mean? I've seen this comment repeated about different women here and it doesn't make any sense. What power do you think Harvey Weinstein had that endowed talentless women with talent when performing onscreen after pleasuring him? That's not how talent works—at all. Renée Zellweger has shown great talent throughout her movie career, Harvey Weinstein or no Harvey Weinstein. To suggest that she showed talent after Weinstein's career imploded suggests he magically endowed a talentless person with talent that should have evaporated when he went to prison. It makes no sense.

by Anonymousreply 32September 11, 2022 8:38 AM

It's never too early to get Renee Zellweger's Christmas wish.

by Anonymousreply 34September 11, 2022 11:33 AM

OP, even after just last week I told you I'm not a big Renee Zelwegger fan...

by Anonymousreply 35September 11, 2022 12:16 PM

Has talent and versatility that belies her looks. Her first Oscar was probably Harvey’s handiwork, but she’s a legit deserving actress.

Here’s one of her best roles:

She an expert at bearding, even going so far as to marry closeted Kenny Chesney. Only lasted a few months.

by Anonymousreply 37September 11, 2022 12:47 PM

It's very weird that a woman of Norwegian descent had eye surgery to look more European...only in America.

by Anonymousreply 38September 11, 2022 12:58 PM

I usually love her as an actress though I didn’t think she was all that great in “Judy”. On the other hand, I really enjoyed her performance in “Cold Mountain” which has been widely dismissed as camp.

She is the absolute worst at giving award acceptance speeches.

by Anonymousreply 39September 11, 2022 3:57 PM

She kind of did let fame go to her head. Her and McConaughey's agents tried to bury that Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie (if they weren't behind it directly, they at least stood by and let their agents do it ). The movie wound up having a super under the radar release. Also, according to Tyler Cone, Renee left him a weird, rambling message when he first moved out to LA. She gave him her manager's number. He called it and her manager just laughed and coldly dismissed Cone when he mentioned starring with her in the TCM movie. According to Robert Jacks (the gay man who played Leatherface in TCM 4 and was also friends with Blondie) Renee was pissed about that incident. Yet, not only did she not hook Cone up with connections, but refused to speak to him ever again. That is cold.

by Anonymousreply 40September 12, 2022 4:27 AM

That sweaty puffy coke whore? Puhleeze.

by Anonymousreply 41September 12, 2022 12:01 PM

Her performance in Judy was very uneven and the movie was boring. I switched it off about halfway through.

by Anonymousreply 42September 12, 2022 12:03 PM

R42 Life is short - you made the right decision.

by Anonymousreply 43September 13, 2022 9:24 AM

Underrated? She has two Oscars, dear. 99.999% of actresses have zero. I think you’re equating pickiness of projects and aging out with underrated. She works when she wants to and finds projects that suit her, and that’s difficult when you’re an actress of a certain age.

by Anonymousreply 44September 13, 2022 12:54 PM

Always serviceable, except for that last quasi-action horror she did almost a decade before Judy. She was GREAT in Chicago. But can't look at her without seeing Tracy Ullman's parody, doing a press junket for a movie where she played a reporter sent to Iraq and suffered from "Chronic Narcissistic Squint." Low hanging fruit, but still funny.

by Anonymousreply 45September 13, 2022 2:06 PM

Speaking of Tracy Ullman, I just rewatched “Bullets Over Broadway” recently and she is just hysterical in that. I loved the line where she makes a joke about breast-feeding her dog.

by Anonymousreply 46September 13, 2022 2:11 PM

She's my favorite.

R36 Down With Love is tops.

R14 Marry me.

by Anonymousreply 47September 13, 2022 3:08 PM

THIS GODDAMN BITCH HAS *TWO* OSCARS!!!! 🤮

by Anonymousreply 48September 27, 2022 10:50 PM

Leave Renee Alone

by Anonymousreply 49September 27, 2022 10:53 PM

[quote] My thought - she always looks like she's squinting like she just came out of a cave

And when she tried to change that, everyone went berserk: "She unrecognizable!" "What the fuck has she done to her face!" "She's gone mad with plastic surgery!!!"

by Anonymousreply 50September 27, 2022 11:02 PM

Well, she never saw *me* naked, that's for sure.

by Anonymousreply 51September 27, 2022 11:04 PM

Like her. Great actress. Kooky. Seems crazy as a fox. Keeps slim and her face has settled so she looks actually kinda great. She dates musicians and rumor had it when she was with Jack White she was quite the party girl.

by Anonymousreply 52September 27, 2022 11:29 PM

R52 here. Also seems like a Hollywood loner who shies away from celebrity. Also admirable.

by Anonymousreply 53September 27, 2022 11:33 PM

R51: and you know that fucker Chesney has a hot dick. Lucky are the dudes who get to see it.

by Anonymousreply 54September 27, 2022 11:50 PM

I liked everything about Jerry Maguire, including her and Tom. Not much from either afterward.

by Anonymousreply 55September 28, 2022 12:05 AM

The big screen’s equivalent of television’s Vanessa Bayer. Passive-aggressively annoying as shit.
