Female Duke University volleyball player called racial slur at BYU match
A female Duke volleyball player was repeatedly called a racial slur during her match against BYU on Friday night, according to the player's godmother.
[quote] "My Goddaughter is the only black starter for Dukes volleyball team," Lesa Pamplin tweeted on Saturday. "While playing yesterday, she was called a [racial slur] every time she served. She was threatened by a white male that told her to watch her back going to the team bus. A police officer had to be put by their bench."
[quote] "Not one freaking adult did anything to protect her. I’m looking at you BYU," she wrote in another tweet. "You allowed this racist behavior to continue without intervening. Apologizing to her parents after the fact is not enough. She will soon be sharing her story."
The player who was verbally assaulted was sophomore Rachel Richardson, who is an outside hitter for Duke. Pamplin confirmed this in two tweets where she said "Rachel is a wreck. Parents were up till 3 this morning trying to console her."
Pamplin continued to describe the scene of the night on Twitter, where she wrote an adult male with floor seats and two children allegedly called Richardson the slur, a police officer stood near the bench to monitor the student section and players told match officials about the slurs.
Though it's unclear exactly when anything happened, there's a video of Richardson serving in front of BYU's student section when her teammates look over in reaction to something that was said.
Journalist Roland Martin tweeted that he spoke with Marvin Richardson, Rachel's father, who said Rachel was supposed to meet with the BYU athletic director and head volleyball coach Heather Olmstead, but Olmstead didn't show up for the meeting.
The BYU athletic department issued a statement after the story went viral, apologizing for the incident. The department said it already banned the person who allegedly said the slur and added that they weren't a BYU student.

Agreed; there was a story a couple of weeks ago about some dispute between parents/coaches at a high school football game (in Texas, of course) and one of the parents shot & killed the coach. But BYU has no security to escort out someone behaving badly, a drunk student, etc.?

First of all, illiterates, it's her godmother not her grandma.
Secondly, this is pretty obviously bullshit. Why would an angry white man give a shit about the a university women's volleyball team? Even if he was the father of a girl on the other team, I can't imagine a scenario in which he would have his attention drawn to a specific player. Even if he was the biggest racist in the world, he just wouldn't be interested.
This is very reminiscent of Althea Bernstein being jumped by a pack of "frat boy types" while she was stopped at a red light. Someone who isn't familiar with white men is inventing crazy bullshit that doesn't even make sense.

The name of the BYU team is the Cougars. Since 1923.
ALL teams put their obnoxious student cheering sections in the best place to distract and annoy the other team. Duh! Have you never been to a college sporting event?
I used to go to Georgetown basketball games regularly because of close friends. I thought it was rather annoying they did this to the opposing/visiting team but that was par for the course for all teams.
They viewed all the videos available and requested people present to share their videos/audios. They can find no evidence of this whatsoever. In addition to no other witnesses from either team or those present who heard this.

R3, and it’s happening all over the place.
Teens and young adults are absolutely despicable nowadays. And please don’t misunderstand me. I know that many teens and young adults go through a spell of rebellion and let out some curse words, etc.
I’m discussing the DISGUSTING racism they display.
You learn that behavior at home and in your community, whether it’s your physical community or your online community or both.
The parents of kids who say this never do anything about it, because they’re the ones who taught their children to think and behave like scum who have zero critical thinking skills and cannot parse their way through objectivity, nuance, justice, decorum and overall decency.
Those youth.grew up in an age where a man who became President had zero respect for women, telling others that it’s OK to grab ‘em by the pussy, and who repeatedly flouted that a black man is not a legitimate president because he is of mixed race and that a white man cannot be president because he lost the election to a white man in 2020.
When this man is your hero, your leader, chances are pretty damn good that you’re gonna raise children who eventually become adults or act like entitled, racist scum.
