I’m finally understanding the joys of espresso

I always thought espresso was just a small cup of concentrated coffee.

But now having tried it for a few days, I really like how creamy it is. I still wish it were a little bigger.

by Anonymousreply 47June 29, 2025 9:36 PM

How about those massive poops? Eee-Haa! 😉

by Anonymousreply 1August 28, 2022 9:15 AM

OP....'tis the only way to drink coffee. ...all other coffees are sock water.

by Anonymousreply 2August 28, 2022 9:34 AM

Try Illy coffee from Italy. That espresso is simply divine!

by Anonymousreply 3August 28, 2022 9:39 AM

Fun Fact: while espresso has more caffeine per ounce than coffee, you drink fewer ounces of it.

So around two to three shots of espresso have the same amount of caffeine as one 8-oz cup of coffee. (Caffeine content varies)

by Anonymousreply 4August 28, 2022 9:57 AM

^ The magic is in the concentration 😜

by Anonymousreply 5August 28, 2022 9:59 AM

Why don't you do a double shot? I don't understand why you just don't make it "a little bigger" as you wish.

by Anonymousreply 6August 28, 2022 10:09 AM

Espresso doesn't have more caffeine than a strong coffee. The creamy-ness comes from the foam that's created bc the hot water is pressed very quickly through the coffee powder and that creates a lot of tiny air bubbles.

Do people add milk and sugar to espresso?

I can have it without milk but I need sugar

by Anonymousreply 8August 30, 2022 10:18 AM

I have a friend who only drinks the crema, which is the first secreted part of the coffee bean. He collects the crema only and drinks that

by Anonymousreply 9August 30, 2022 10:19 AM

[quote]Do people add milk and sugar to espresso?

Are you serious?

by Anonymousreply 10August 30, 2022 10:25 AM

I need a double espresso to reach the awake level of a full coffee

by Anonymousreply 11August 30, 2022 10:31 AM

R10, what happens at Starbucks and what happens traditionally are two different things

by Anonymousreply 12August 30, 2022 10:31 AM

I thought if you add anything to espresso, it would be a small amount of anisette.

by Anonymousreply 13August 30, 2022 10:42 AM

Adding milk to espresso gets you into the world of macchiato, flat white, latte, cappuccino. Adding water to espresso makes an Americano.

If you want something halfway between espresso and drip coffee, try out a moka pot. I love espresso but can’t fully shed my American desire for more volume. It’s nice to take the time to sip on something in the morning.

by Anonymousreply 14August 30, 2022 10:48 AM

^ oh and in Naples, they give you a little glass of sparkling water to go with your shot of espresso, and sometimes a twist of lemon, very nice.

by Anonymousreply 15August 30, 2022 10:49 AM

R14, thank you for perfectly expressing my issue too. I like the volume of coffee

by Anonymousreply 16August 30, 2022 10:52 AM

I serve it with a little lemon twist

by Anonymousreply 17June 27, 2025 5:39 AM

Another Illy fan, they put cocaine in it.

by Anonymousreply 18June 27, 2025 5:59 AM

Italians traditionally add sugar to soften the bitter taste.

by Anonymousreply 19June 27, 2025 6:21 AM

[quote]Do people add milk and sugar to espresso?

They make tiny 3 inch espresso spoons in Italy for a reason. Don't let anyone tell you they only drink it black.

I make a mini pot of espresso for myself some mornings. To a double or triple espresso, I add a packet of Stevia or one sugar cube, and if I have it on hand and no one is looking, I add a few drops of heavy cream. Heaven! I'll take a single shot of black espresso if there's a lemon peel and I'm in France or Italy. If I'm rushed, I'll make a single cup of strong filtered coffee and add some half and half. No sugar.

My partner thinks I'm a twee pussy. He's from Boston. He likes a giant mug or a whole pot of of percolated black coffee to drink. Him switching to decaf saved our marriage. What he loves most is when I make him a half-caf pot the night before, and let it cool in the fridge. He then drinks it all day on ice, with cream and exactly 7 drops of Stevia.

by Anonymousreply 21June 27, 2025 6:35 AM

I actually WISH I could like espresso but I cannot drink it without a ton of sugar and cream which draws a lot negative comments from people who see me do that.

I don't get the puritanical crowd that say it must be black or just a tiny spot of sugar. If it's equal to a 8 oz cup of coffee condensed down to a little cup, I need an equal offset with cream and sugar.

by Anonymousreply 22June 27, 2025 10:04 AM

You can add water to it to make a “bigger” drink.

by Anonymousreply 23June 27, 2025 10:10 AM

[quote]I still wish it were a little bigger.

The most popular sentence in Datalounge history.

by Anonymousreply 24June 27, 2025 10:15 AM

R20 we have a set of that fifth spoon.

by Anonymousreply 25June 27, 2025 10:16 AM

Adding cream = no longer espresso. What’s the Italian word for cringey?

Imbarazzante!

by Anonymousreply 26June 27, 2025 10:18 AM

R19 is correct. It’s always served with sugar available on the side. Biscotti on the saucer most often, but not always.

by Anonymousreply 27June 27, 2025 10:20 AM

Raw sugar works best with espresso.

by Anonymousreply 28June 27, 2025 10:21 AM

I'm a huge fan of ristretto, served in the smallest, faggiest little cup you ever did see.

Italians drink it as a to-go shot, they don't even sit down to do it.

That link is lousy with information. Contrary to what it says, you can and do order single or double (“singolo o doppio?”) in Italy.

by Anonymousreply 30June 27, 2025 11:49 AM

You wouldn't believe how many pronounce it as "eXpresso".

by Anonymousreply 31June 27, 2025 2:40 PM

You mean like anyone speaking French? I believe it.

by Anonymousreply 32June 27, 2025 3:13 PM

The big problem I have with espresso is the pleasure goes away after one sip

by Anonymousreply 33June 27, 2025 3:29 PM

A select few will only drink the “crema,” the creamy part the comes out the first few seconds

by Anonymousreply 34June 27, 2025 3:31 PM

r32 I obviously meant English speakers, since this is an anglophone message board, dear.

by Anonymousreply 35June 27, 2025 3:55 PM

[quote]What’s the Italian word for cringey?

It would probably be useful to learn the proper English word first, which is "cringeworthy."

by Anonymousreply 36June 27, 2025 3:58 PM

Thats not worth of a reply. Sorry

by Anonymousreply 37June 27, 2025 4:09 PM

So an English speaker ordering in Paris must use the Italian word and not the French word? Very odd r35

by Anonymousreply 38June 27, 2025 4:11 PM

I've never heard a French speaker call it expresso.

by Anonymousreply 39June 27, 2025 4:15 PM

[quote] You wouldn't believe how many pronounce it as "eXpresso".

Like Achamel Foley.

by Anonymousreply 41June 28, 2025 5:31 AM

Mrs. Olson @41, please tell us more...

by Anonymousreply 42June 29, 2025 6:16 AM

I like espresso, but it makes me shit like a pet coon.

by Anonymousreply 43June 29, 2025 1:45 PM

Like a what??

by Anonymousreply 44June 29, 2025 2:02 PM

Why not just take Vivarin pills if you just wanna stay hopped up on caffeine all the time?

Seems like a lot of less commotion and folderol.

by Anonymousreply 45June 29, 2025 2:05 PM

We’re only allowed to drink Postum.

by Anonymousreply 46June 29, 2025 2:06 PM

Folderol. Is that a tincture for feminine itch?
