Forest Gump? Not quite 20 years there.

by Anonymousreply 1August 26, 2022 1:59 AM

I'd remove Lost In Translation, which is a genuinely great movie, but the rest are pretty much on the mark. Though, was Twilight Saga ever critically acclaimed?

by Anonymousreply 2August 26, 2022 2:04 AM

There are many good movies on that list, especially American Hustle. My overrated list would include Call Me By Your Name, The Favorite, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 3August 26, 2022 2:09 AM

So… movies with white leads are all overrated. Got it. The new anti-white racism is infecting everyone.

by Anonymousreply 4August 26, 2022 2:11 AM

People haven’t been able to shut up about how much they hate movies like Shakespeare in Love, The King’s Speech and La La Land since those films were released. At this point, calling them overrated isn’t just boring, it’s factually wrong.

The only two on the list that might really count as overrated movies from the past twenty years are Lost in Translation and Hereditary (and I like both movies very much). The rest are movies that people complain about constantly, although sometimes deservedly. How can they be overrated?

by Anonymousreply 5August 26, 2022 2:12 AM

Poor little snowflake @R4. Fuck your feelings.

by Anonymousreply 6August 26, 2022 2:20 AM

Silver Lining Playbook =yes, overrated.

Shakespeare In Love= never seen and never will,

Titanic,= as above

American Hustle= as above

La La Land= as above

Slumdog Millionaire= never seen

Drive= one of my favorites. Two scenes are particularly memorable.

Lost In Translation,= overrated.

The King’s Speech= havent seen yet

Traffic= a tiny bit overrated but Michael Douglas makes entertaining films.

Hereditary= genuinely frightening

The Notebook= wont sit through this

Avatar= haven't seen

Dances With Wolves= wont see this, ever

Twilight Saga= will never see this

Forrest Gump= will never see this

A Star is Born= will never see this in any iteration

Charley and the Chocolate Factory= not memorable. A money grab.

The Blind Side= yes, overrated

Pulp Fiction= yes, overrated. Jackie Brown is a superior film

Shakespeare in Love was witty, well written and had a great plot. Judy Dench commanded the screen in her brief scenes and if you didn’t tear up when Mark Williams proclaimed “T-t-t-TWO HOUSES!” then you have no heart.

Lost in Translation, bored woman has all expense paid trip to Tokyo and is so self involved that she can’t step outside her luxury hotel to explore the city.

Dances With Wolves, great score by John Barry

I enjoyed Lost in Translation, but I lived in Japan for a long time. I disagree with Slumdog Millionaire. It's maybe not a "great" movie, but it is immensely entertaining. So is Pulp Fiction. At the time, it really was ground-breaking, although Jackie Brown was definitely better.

Hereditary might not be such a strong film, but Toni Colette gives an absolute masterclass in acting. The diner scene for instance where she berates her moody son is absolutely breathtaking. The fact that she still doesn’t have an academy award is plain shocking.

OP needs a calendar or a math lesson. The 90’s were not 20 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 11September 2, 2022 5:43 PM

Titanic was 25 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 12September 2, 2022 5:48 PM

How is Crash (not Cronenberg’s) not on this list, it’s considered the worst Oscar winning movie?

by Anonymousreply 13September 2, 2022 5:53 PM

R7 is like a vegetarian telling us his opinion on steaks.

by Anonymousreply 14September 2, 2022 5:55 PM

All Hollywood studio films, right? Good target. Is box office rel to cost, awards, or number of rotten tomatoes the criteria?

Now I'll have to go finish watching some of these films I wandered off on. Like Avatar, that Shakespeare film, Titanic, LaLaLa, and the Tarantino Sharon Tate one. But since i like movies based on my mood or hankering of the mo, I'll have to find the oppo.v or maybe i won't.

The one I've never heard of is Hereditary. Scary movie it sounds like. I scare easily, silly rabbit me.

Kudos for a fun parlor game OP. R4 made a funny. WW for you!

I’m not a big fan of Power of the Dog.

Most comic book films are pretty much unwatchable to me. Two hours into The Dark Knight I was begging the person showing it to me to turn it off like George C Scott in Hardcore.

The English Patient does.

But it was close. Very close.

by Anonymousreply 18September 2, 2022 9:30 PM

R14 that is the typical DL poster, unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 19September 2, 2022 9:32 PM

R13 That was the first movie I thought of! “Crash”

Also I would add “Sideways”. I remember that year the movie was so praised and Chris Rock did a skit at the Oscars where he asked white people and black people about the movie. White people said it was incredible and black people said they never heard of it and when asked what their favorite movie was, they said “White Chicks”.

“White Chicks” had the last laugh because it’s a cult classic and no one remembers “Sideways”.

by Anonymousreply 20September 2, 2022 9:37 PM

"American Beauty" needs to be on that list, if it's 30 years.
