'Moonlight' for me. A cinematic masterpiece and, to date, the only gay-themed movie to win best picture. The Diner scene is on a par with the most iconic scenes in Hollywood history.

the 60s/70s films require copius amounts of drugs
the 80s anti-depressants
the 90s, so much jailbait. . which extended into the early 00s but much of the western films as with before, split between shitty try too hard camp films and very special episode movie of the week shit.
2010s the messaging iis just everybody is a scumbag unless they're suffering the most from their insuffrable identities.
so, of the english speaking world, let's go with Wonder Boys.. where gay just is and not central to anything.

Brokeback for me. I know it's hated on here but just as a young minority NYC boy it spoke so well to me. The acting is phenomenal. Call me Mary. They really seem gay and going thru this shit in the latter half of last century.

These are the movies that really do it for me:
God's Own Country
And Then We Danced
Parting Glances
End of the Century
Happy Together

Hawaii is another one I love and, for me, a close second to Moonlight. It's a proper grownup movie where the director isn't trying to hit you in the face with a sledgehammer or spell things out. Subtlety over melodrama. I identified with both leads

^ Another Marco Berger movie almost as good as Hawaii. The Blond One.

Mysterious Skin
Longtime Companion
The Living End
Brokeback Mountain
The Mudge Boy
For historical perspective, I also enjoyed Boys In the Band (1970) and Some of My Best Friends Are... (1971). The latter has Rue McClanahan, in her pre-Maude/Golden Girls days, playing a vindictive fag hag sex pot. It also stars Gary Sandy (pre-WKRP) as a flirty gay-for-pay hustler, Fannie Flagg and Candy Darling.

For TV shows:
Vicious
Kids in the Hall
Queer as Folk (U.S., trashy fun)
Brothers (horrifically dated, but ground-breaking)
Really not much to choose from unless you include shows with supporting gay characters.

While I enjoyed seeing a naked JGL in " Mysterious Skin," my favorite is still " Beautiful Thing," because the gays are not psychotic killers, whores, or suicidal. It just ends up happy and demonstrated that gay people, especially younger ones, can find love and be happy.

Come Undone (2000), a French film. Hot guys and one particularly hot sex scene on the beach. Sometimes it's free to watch on Tubi and/or Amazon Prime (free for subscribers).

"Chucky"- I like the young, teen love story. And it's got Jennifer Tilly.

Besides the already mentioned Maurice, Call Me by Your Name and God's Own Country, I love this little-known gem:

The Sum of Us (1994). Australian film. Very touching. With a young Russell Crowe and the great actor Jack Thompsom.

R22, do you know where I could see When I'm 64?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 26, 2022 10:05 PM |
It's not considered gay per se, but "Oz."

R9, I agree. I rode a bus across town multiple times to see Brokeback Mountain at the only theater playing it in my city. At that time, the theater didn't have assigned seats, and you couldn't buy tickets online, so we had to line up outdoors hours early to get a good seat. The line wrapped around the building every showing. It was nice to see that level of interest. I also noticed how many people stayed in their seats when the credits rolled, emotionally affected by the film.

R24 It's not an easy movie to find (no home video or streaming releases); I only found it on ok.ru (Russian youtube), with Spanish subtitles included. It's definitely worth a watch, though.

My bad. How I could forget Beautiful Thing (which I also saw Off-Bway at the Cherry Lane), Maurice (OMG, Rupert!) or The Sum of Us (also at the Cherry Lane, sadly sans Russell Crowe).
There's a bunch of gay-themed movies from the 90s-early 2000s. I also like the flawed "Love and Human Remains" (better as a play at the Orpheum in NYC) and Urbania. But those are dark movies as well. For something lighter, maybe "Girls will be Girls" and "Space Station 76" with Matt Bomer playing straight and Patrick Wilson playing gay). The latter is more comedy-drama spoof.
