Has anyone here ever lived in Portland Maine ?

What were your impressions? Just curious.

R1- Reddit actually has some decent threads on Maine.

If you have the money- its a lovely little city.

(I prefer Cape Elizabeth/Freeport/York/Ogunquit/Scarborough and other surrounding towns, and would rather live south of Portland nearer to Boston.

If not- Horrible job market, horrible state taxes and pretty bad property taxes, extremely expensive housing for a state with no living wage jobs.

Maine is not for everyone, as I learned the hard way. I hated the place. (I found a place north of Portland- it felt like the land that time forgot)

Truly, other than vacationing, Maine is a supremely fucked up state. If you are wealthy or highly entrepreneurial (or have a true profession- doctor/lawyer) you can live in a really beautiful and relatively crime free state. It still feels like another world as it is sparsely populated (generally) and pretty fucking backwoods.
