I wonder if anyone here has seen this? I personally don’t know many people who even know it exists.

It has my favorite non-family/non-friend human being in it…Joe Strummer. And he is damn good too. His section of the film is with Steve Buscemi, of whom I am also very fond. And it’s really goofy & silly & mentions Lost in Space. Not many movies have Lost in Space in them.

The film is a triptych of stories involving foreign protagonists, unfolding over the course of the same night. "Far from Yokohama" features a Japanese couple (Youki Kudoh and Masatoshi Nagase) on a cultural pilgrimage, "A Ghost" focuses on an Italian widow (Nicoletta Braschi) stranded in the city overnight, and "Lost in Space" follows the misadventures of a newly single and unemployed Englishman (Joe Strummer) and his reluctant companions (Rick Aviles and Steve Buscemi). The narratives are linked by a run-down flophouse overseen by a night clerk (Screamin' Jay Hawkins) and his disheveled bellboy (Cinqué Lee), the use of Elvis Presley's song "Blue Moon",[3] and a gunshot.

R176 We probably didn't watch that much TV, actually, but it seems like it because we were all watching the same thing. There wasn't much on. I watched a lot of the ABC Movies Of The Week and what's funny is I never really liked most of them. But there wasn't much to choose from. It's funny, though - even the ones I didn't care for very much give me a pang of nostalgia when I see them. I remember where I watched them, at home, and doing my homework, and everything.

r203 Gregg Araki films are basically over budgeted indie trash from the 90s with bisexual themes. . . they're beloved and hated by many. "Totally F***ed Up" was popular youth.

Nowhere:.

It's more a time capsule of celebs and requires a fair adderal for some people to sit through

It had a decent soundtrack:

Songs featured in the movie that do not appear on the soundtrack album include:

Slowdive – "Avalyn II" Stacy Q - "Two of Hearts" Cocteau Twins - "Seekers Who Are Lovers" Babyland - "Five Fingers" Scylla - "Get A Helmet" Sonic Youth - "Hendrix Necro" The Future Sound of London - "Papua New Guinea" Blur - "She's so High" The Verve - "Grey Skies" Nine Inch Nails - "Memorabilia" Mojave 3 - "Tryin' To Reach You" Filter - "Take Another" Seefeel - "Air-Eyes" The Jesus & Mary Chain - "In The Black" Nitzer Ebb - "Kick It" Seefeel - "Time To Find Me" Portishead - "Mourning Air" Adorable - "Vendetta" Red Kross - "Out Of My Tree" Coil - "The Snow: Answers Come In Dreams" My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - "The Next Room Of The Dream" Flying Saucer Attack - "Land Beyond The Sun" Filter - "Dose" The The - "Love Is Stronger Than Death"

The short film is a collection of comedy sketches, contained within the main story which is centered on two characters: the protagonist, an extraterrestrial in the form of a human sized (and bipedal) beaver; and the antagonist, a gay vampire called "Dragula". R214 That is not a "random movie." It's a classic.

by Anonymousreply 215August 28, 2022 12:25 PM

r215 It's random in the flow from the previous film. It's less classic than cult. . . it aged horribly and has become camp. And the premise, the characters, how they react is laughable especially for the sort of film it's intended to be.

But let's move onto 1972's Savages

Based on the award winning 1972 young adult novel (!) Deathwatch by Robb White, Savages is about a man named Horton Madec (Andy Griffith), a seemingly amiable attorney looking for a weekend in the wild with nothing but a guide and his guns to keep him company. After his original escort cancels, Madec hires Ben Campbell (Sam Bottoms), a young and handsome geology-student-and-man-of-the-desert and the two head towards parts unknown. Too eager to hit his prey, Madec accidentally kills the local loony miner and asks Ben to help him cover up the crime. But this is Ben’s friend… plus Ben has this thing called a conscience, so Madec has to take matters into his own hands and decides that two murders are just as good as one. Forcing Ben to remove his shirt, shoes and socks, Madec abandons the student in the middle of nowhere and then follows him at a safe distance to make sure the sun and lack of water gets to Ben before he can get to the main highway...

Highlights include a UFO buff who adamantly insists that the U.S. has been on the moon since the 1950s, a woman who produces a glass slide purportedly of Madonna's pap smear, and an old anarchist who sympathetically shares his philosophy of life with a robber.

Times Square (1980)

directed by Allan Moyle and starring Trini Alvarado and Robin Johnson as teenage runaways from opposite sides of the tracks and Tim Curry as a radio DJ

In the 1980s, New York City’s Times Square wasn’t so much the “Crossroads of the World” as it was the wrong side of the tracks.

The sex market and drug trade thrived in the area, and homeless encampments dotted its streets. Many local theaters – once legitimate operations showcasing the performances of renowned actors like Lionel Barrymore – had become home to peep shows and porn movies.

Crime rates soared.

Nicky Marotta (Robin Johnson) and Pamela Pearl (Trini Alvarado) are two teenage girls who meet in the New York Neurological Hospital, where both are being examined for mental illness. Pamela is depressed and insecure, and neglected and exploited by her father, David Pearl (Peter Coffield), a prominent and wealthy commissioner running a campaign to "clean up" Times Square. Nicky is a tough-talking street kid with musical aspirations, sent to the hospital for an evaluation after an altercation with police. Sharing a room, the brash Nicky and shy Pamela become friends. Nicky admires Pamela's poetic spirit; Pamela admires Nicky's forthright attitude and resents the condescending way in which the doctors treat her. Nicky is released from the hospital and later returns, ostensibly for an appointment with her social worker, Rosie Washington (Anna Maria Horsford), but really to break Pamela out. Both girls escape the hospital, steal an ambulance, and hide out in abandoned warehouse on the Chelsea Piers, making a pact to scream out each other's names in times of trouble.

Gay Men's Guide To Safer Sex is safer sex educational documentary primarily aimed at bisexual and gay men to inform them how to better prevent contracting sexually transmitted diseases from each other, primarily HIV/AIDS. It was produced in 1992 by Mike Esser and Tony Carne of Pride Video in association with the Terrence Higgins Trust (the first British charity to campaign on and provide services relating to HIV and sexual health), with medical information presented by Mike Youle, a British doctor specializing in HIV treatment. Gay Men's Guide To Safer Sex (1992

The film was controversial upon release, being the first explicitly gay video available on street shops, especially in the historical context of post-Thatcher England. Many conservative organizations condemned and attempted to ban it, despite its educational intention and nature.

The band Coil provided the soundtrack for this documentary, having been familiar with the Terrence Higgins Trust for many years, as their 1985 music video for "Tainted Love" was the first commercial music video whose proceeds went exclusively to an HIV/AIDS prevention organization (i.e. to Terrence Higgins Trust)

Fellini Satyricon (1969)
written and directed by Federico Fellini and loosely based on Petronius's work Satyricon, written during the reign of Emperor Nero and set in Imperial Rome. The film is divided into nine episodes, following Encolpius (Martin Potter) and his friend Ascyltus (Hiram Keller) as they try to win the heart of a young boy named Gitón within a surreal and dreamlike Roman landscape.

It had a strange impact on psychiatry and psychology for the next few years. . . I recall several books referencing it in some way.

The Boys from Brazil (1978)

The Boys from Brazil is a film that was one of the first films to depict cloning, and to discuss the ethical implications of genetic engineering, cloning, and eugenics.

it stars Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier, and features James Mason, Lilli Palmer, Uta Hagen, Anne Meara, Denholm Elliott, and Steve Guttenberg in supporting roles.

The Boys from Brazil is based on the novel of the same name by Ira Levin, which was published by Random House in 1972. The Boys from Brazil is 125 minutes long, and the film stars actors Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, and Jeremy Black. In both the film and novel, the main characters are Ezra Lieberman, portrayed by actor Laurence Olivier, a Nazi hunter or someone trying to bring escaped World War II Nazis to trial, and Josef Mengele, portrayed by actor Gregory Peck, a World War II Nazi physician. Lieberman's character parallels the historical Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal. Wiesenthal was a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. After the war, Wiesenthal spent his life searching and prosecuting Nazi criminals and bringing awareness and education about the Holocaust. Mengele is based on the historical Josef Mengele, a Nazi during World War II. He worked as a physician in the Auschwitz concentration camp and conducted medical experimentation on Jewish prisoners, primarily focusing on twins. The historical Mengele was a highly sought-after Nazi criminal, but he went into hiding after the end of World War II to escape trial.

According to science communications scholar David Kirby, The Boys from Brazil was one of the first science fiction films to consult scientists for the scientific aspects of the film. Schaffner used Derek Bromhall, a developmental biologist at Oxford University in Oxford, England, as the science consultant for the film. Bromhall researched nuclear transplantation in rabbits. Nuclear transplantation, also called cloning, is the process in which the nucleus of one cell is relocated into a donor cell that has had its nucleus removed. Bromhall explained the process of cloning, and Schaffner used the explanation for the scene in which cloning was explained to Nazi hunter Ezra Lieberman. At the time of film's production, scientists debated cloning topics. Despite the lack of universal agreement in terms of how to define cloning, Schaffner used Bromhall's method and approach as the model for cloning to add scientific accuracy for the film.

Momo (1986)

In the village of Momo the pace of time goes very slowly. Nobody is bothering about stress but everyone has time to chat and rest - until the day the grey men arrive.

Based on the 1973 novel Momo by Michael Ende. It is about the concept of time and how it is used by humans in modern societies. This film was a German-Italian co-production in which Michael Ende himself played the role of the passenger in the train (who is told the story by Master Hora and writes it down). It appears that Ende, unhappy with how the film based on The Neverending Story did not follow the spirit of the book faithfully enough, requested to be involved more directly in filming Momo.

The Killing of Sister George (1968)

The life of a soap opera actress begins to unravel as she fears her character will be written out of the series.

Middle-aged actress June Buckridge (Beryl Reid) plays "Sister George", a lovable motor scooter-riding district nurse and local sage, in a fictional long-running BBC television soap opera, Applehurst. She has been with the show for four years and is so identified with her character that she is often called George in real life. Off-screen, she is a gin-guzzling, cigar-chomping, slightly sadistic masculine woman, the antithesis of the sweet character she plays. Although June has been popular with viewers in the past, several Applehurst characters have recently been killed off causing June to worry that Sister George may be next.

Wish You Were Here - a British film from 1987 that I believe was Emily Lloyd's first movie. She was hot for about a minute and then dropped off the face of the Earth. Mental issues, I think.

I worked in a video store in the late eighties, and early nineties, and there were all sorts of random movies that we had in stock, but what I found more interesting were the movies on the trailer videos that we had to play in the store all the time that never made it to the store. Like, what happened to them? Did they never get released? Did we just not get them? Did they get shelved for years?

I'm trying to think of a film on one of these trailer videos about a dog (Poodle, probably) whose owner died and was bequeathed to someone else who didn't want it. British film I think - with an Alan Bates-type character. I've been trying to find it forever.

Something To Live For (1952), the forgotten George Stevens film released between the classics, A Place In The Sun (1951), and Shane (1953). IMDB says "An actress becomes an alcoholic after being jilted. She is aided by an Alcoholics Anonymous member with whom she has an affair; however, he is married." Joan Fontaine, Ray Milland and Teresa Wright starred. It was written by Dwight Taylor, who based some of it on his mother, Laurette Taylor. The screenplay has too many convenient and unlikely coincidences, but is still pretty good.

Ginger Roger's mother played her, well, mother in this film.

This movie could more than likely not be remade at all. It's filmed wonderfully and Ginger Rogers is gorgeous in it.

Random: If I Had a Million. Made in the 1930s, the film tells the story of a dying rich man and his greedy relatives who are waiting at his house for him to kick the bucket. The dying man decides to use an eye dropper of water to pick random people from the city directory who will each be given one million dollars. Several vignettes tell the stories of these random people. Some of the stories are funny and some are thought provoking. WC Fields portrays a man whose new car has just been smashed by what he calls "a road hog" so he keeps buying car after car and sets out to find and crash into every road hog he can find. One story is that of a prostitute who uses her money to check into a nice hotel. After bathing and dressing, she climbs into her bed, gets comfortably settled, looks at the other pillow on the bed, picks it up and chucks it across the room.. Another story is that of a desperate man who has a reputation for passing bad checks and no one will cash his one million dollar check. Finally a flophouse owner agrees to take his check but laughs at him and ridicules him because he doesn't believe the check is genuine. As the desperate man gets into a filthy bed, the flophouse owner sets the check on fire and uses it to light his cigar. Another story is that of forgotten women who are living in an old folks home. They aren't allowed to do anything but sit in chairs. They cannot bake, play cards, listen to the radio or anything that brings them pleasure. One of the recipients of the million dollars uses the money to buy the old folks home and changes everything. The women are shown happily sewing, playing games, listening to music and baking biscuits. The newly-made millionaire then pays the former owner of the old folks home to sit and rock in a rocking chair and will not let her do anything else. They invite their dying old millionaire to the old folks where he meets all the now happy women and and enjoys sampling some of the biscuits they have baked. This is a great movie and all of you should watch it, right now, this very minute.

Forgotten: "White Nights" with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. It is the story of a dancer who has defected from Soviet Russia and is forced to return to Soviet territory when a plane he is in makes an emergency landing in Soviet territory and he is forced to return to living in the Soviet Union. He meets Hines and his wife (Helen Mirren) and is determined to escape.

[bold]Lost Angels[/bold] (1989) starring Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys), Donald Sutherland, Amy Locane and Celia Weston.
Tim "Chino" Doolan (Horovitz) comes from an upper class middle family of the broken home variety. After getting himself into lots of trouble his mother and stepfather trick him into a private psychiatric hospital in the San Fernando Valley where he is to be reintegrated back into society. Needless to say Tim doth protests and hijinx ensue, because Tim is deep in the streets. He belongs to a local street gang of preppy boys who have an ongoing rivalry with the local Latino gang. To make matters worst he gets involved with Cheryl, a local "rich girl" who is just as screwed up as he is, if not more, and things really heat up. Assigned to the case of the rebellious teenager is Dr. Charles Loftis (Donald Sutherland) who wants to rehabilitate young Tim. It won't be easy, because Tim has a problem with authority. Loftis can handle it though, because he's dealt with worst kids than Tim.

The summary says they have a rivalry with a Latino gang but neglects to mention the "preppy boys" often acted like they were Latino. If you're ever in the mood for a bad movie this it is.
