Far-right Italian leader Giorgia Meloni blasted for posting rape video

ROME (Reuters) - Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni, leading the race to become Italy's next prime minister, was accused on Monday of shameful electioneering by her rivals after posting a video of a Ukrainian woman being raped by a migrant in an Italian city.

The 55-year-old woman was assaulted on a pavement in the city of Piacenza early Sunday by an asylum seeker from Guinea, local officials said. The incident was videoed by someone in a flat overlooking the street and the assailant was arrested.

Police confirmed the arrest and said the man was being detained as the investigation continued.

Meloni, whose Brothers of Italy party heads the polls ahead of a Sept. 25 national election, tweeted the video, which had been posted on a newspaper website with the image blurred but the woman's cries clearly audible.

"One cannot remain silent in the face of this atrocious episode of sexual violence against a Ukrainian woman carried out in daytime in Piacenza by an asylum seeker," Meloni wrote.

"A hug to this woman. I will do everything I can to restore security to our cities."

The tweet drew a barrage of criticism online, as well as from Meloni's political opponents.

"It is indecent to use images of a rape. Even more indecent to do so for electoral purposes," Enrico Letta, head of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), wrote on Twitter.

Another centrist leader, Carlo Calenda, called Meloni's Tweet "immoral". Igiaba Scego, a prominent Italian writer of Somali heritage, accused Meloni of exploiting the rape victim.

"Offered up as clickbait voyeurism instead of being protected. This electoral campaign is horrendous," she wrote.

Meloni, who has called for a naval blockade of north Africa to prevent migrant boats from setting sail, said on Facebook her rivals had used the rape to attack her while ignoring the victim to avoid addressing what she called the immigration emergency.

Letta's post had said: "Respect for people and victims always comes first" and Calenda wrote "only the victims matter".

Right Wingers in the US and Europe are becoming quite brazen.

There really is nothing too low for them.

It's like they really enjoy rolling in the mud, like the pigs that they are.

What's worse, is that voters are lapping up all this hatred.

by Anonymousreply 1August 22, 2022 4:50 PM

So where is the video ?

by Anonymousreply 2August 22, 2022 4:52 PM

Meloni? Does she have a weird-shaped head reminiscent of that of Bert of Bert and Ernie fame?

by Anonymousreply 3August 22, 2022 5:17 PM

Is she related to Giogio Moroder?

by Anonymousreply 4August 22, 2022 5:28 PM

She'll probably be the next leader of Italy.

It's weird how Italians lean towards fascism.

Even the ones in this country are some of Trump's biggest supporters.

Should we tell her, rest of DL?

by Anonymousreply 6August 23, 2022 2:33 AM

It does seem they veer between corrupt oligarchy, anarchy, and fascism. It's like they are always trying to live out Aristotle's Politics. Stop doing that, Italy! Come up with a semi-decent government and stop dicking around all the time.

Although I guess you mainly just ignore government and do your own thing, anyway.

[quote]"One cannot remain silent in the face of this atrocious episode of sexual violence against a Ukrainian woman carried out in daytime in Piacenza by an asylum seeker,"

Good for her!

I truly hope the Fratelli d'Italia win. As they have in local elections.

Of course the American "progressives" would love nothing more than to see Italy turned into a shithole.

Yeah, Italy really needs to learn from Americans!

by Anonymousreply 9August 23, 2022 2:39 AM

Yes, obviously that is the dream of every American "progressive," r8. We won't rest until Italy becomes a shithole!

The country, the society, has been surprisingly stable since the 1970s. More so than the US. That's for sure.

by Anonymousreply 12August 23, 2022 2:41 AM

Well not these days, r9. that much is true, but honestly was Belusconi any better than Trump? And honestly, have you ever had a good government, like, ever?

Wild, violent, animals who lack any sort of humanity. They'll get the government they deserve.

[quote] The brutal attack of Nigerian vendor Alika Ogorchukwu was reportedly filmed by onlookers without any apparent attempt to intervene physically

Police in Italy arrested an Italian man in the slaying of a Nigerian vendor whose brutal beating death on a busy beach town thoroughfare was filmed by onlookers without any apparent attempt to intervene physically.

Video footage of the attack has circulated widely on Italian news websites and social media, eliciting outrage as Italy enters a parliamentary election campaign in which the right-wing coalition has already made immigration an issue.

“The murder of Alika Ogorchukwu is dismaying,’’ Enrico Letta, a former premier and the head of the left-wing Democratic Party, wrote Saturday on Twitter, naming the vendor who died Friday. “Unheard of ferocity. Widespread indifference. There can be no justification.”

Right-wing leader Matteo Salvini, who is making security a plank of his campaign, also expressed outrage over the death, saying “security has no color and ... needs to return to being a right.”

Ogorchukwu, 39, was selling goods Friday on the main street of Civitanova Marche, a beach town on the Adriatic Sea, when his attacker grabbed the vendor's crutch and struck him down, according to police. Video shows the assailant wrestling the victim onto his back on the pavement as he fought back, eventually subduing Ogorchukwu with the weight of his body.

"The aggressor went after the victim, first hitting him with a crutch. He made him fall to the ground, then he finished, causing the death, striking repeatedly with his bare hands,' police investigator Matteo Luconi told a press conference.

He later told Italian news channel Sky TG24 that onlookers called police, who responded after the suspect had fled and attempted to administer aid to the victim. An autopsy will determine if the death was provoked by blows, suffocation or another cause.

Police used street cameras to track the assailant's movements and detained a man identified as Filippo Claudio Giuseppe Ferlazzo, 32. He was being held on suspicion of murder and theft for allegedly taking the victim’s phone.

Luconi said the assailant lashed out after the vendor made “insistent” requests for pocket change. Police were questioning witnesses and viewing videos of the attack. They said the suspect has made no statement.

Ogorchukwu, who was married with two children, resorted to selling goods on the street after he was struck by a car and lost his job as a laborer due to his injuries, said Daniel Amanza, who runs the ACSIM association for immigrants in the Marche region's Macerata province.

Amanza gave a different version of what happened, saying the attacker became infuriated when Ogorchukwu told the man's companion she was beautiful.

“This compliment killed him,’’ Amanza told The Associated Press.

“The tragic fact is that there were many people nearby. They filmed, saying ‘Stop,’ but no one moved to separate them,’’ Amanza said.

Macerata was the site of a 2018 shooting spree targeting African immigrants that wounded six people. Luca Traini, 31, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the shootings, which Italy’s highest court confirmed qualified as a hate crime.

Civitanova Marche's mayor, Fabrizio Ciarapica, met with members of the Nigerian community after hundreds demonstrated on Saturday.

“My condemnation is not only for the (crime) but it is also for the indifference,' Ciarapica told Sky. ”This is something that has shocked citizens."

Former Premier Matteo Renzi, who heads his own small party, called out political leaders for “instrumentalizing” the attack.

“I am horrified by this electoral climate,″ he said on social media. ”A father was killed in an atrocious and racist way while passersby took video without stopping the aggressor. And instead of reflecting on what we are becoming, politicians argue and instrumentalize.”

This Meloni bitch is exactly the type that riles up the wild masses in Italy (see R27), much like how Donald Trump does for MAGATS and insurrectionists.

They're cut from the same cloth.

Trump hasn't only emboldened hatred and violence in our own country.

He has made it acceptable all over the world.

by Anonymousreply 30August 23, 2022 3:01 AM

No, it is actually at the state level, mostly, r28. You may not know this, but it really is. Foreigners might not understand this dynamic, but most states are completely gun nut states and so if you can't get guns in your own state, you can generally go to a neighboring state and buy them there. It's a whole thing.

R33 My town in Italy is governed by the Brothers of Italy. A town that historically voted left. For 70 years voted left without interruption. The mayor just won reelection.

[quote] If it depicts a real crime situation that seriously needs redressing, why the outrage at seeing it?

You DO realize that the percentage of rapists in Italy, is probably 99% native Italian and 1% immigrant.

Yet the right wing would have you believe that immigrants are taking Italian jobs away, and causing all the crime, and raping all the women.

Fucking idiots.

Rapes happen everywhere in Italy, by people of all races. Mainly white European. Mainly Italian, in Italy.

But keep pretending that it's all dark immigrants. Keep scapegoating them. Keep killing them at random.

That's exactly what evil right-wing leaders want you to do.

by Anonymousreply 36August 23, 2022 3:12 AM

If I found out that a politician was propagating a video of my rape to get more votes I wouldn’t react very sanely. I’ll just leave it at that.

Fuck these African economic migrants. We don't want them in Europe. Most of them are Muzzies, too. They stink as well.

by Anonymousreply 46August 23, 2022 6:53 AM

These illegal immigrants should be sent back to the hellholes from which they came.

by Anonymousreply 47August 23, 2022 7:21 AM

r46 you can't just make statistics up. Where are you getting those numbers from? I've only seen those numbers in Breitbart, not exactly noted for the accuracy of its research, and it claims it got those numbers from the Italian Ministry of the Interior. The head of the ministry of the interior is noted anti-immigrant, Matteo Salvini, who has said many times that he would like every single non-Italian to be expelled from Italy, so, again, I would question any statistics he "compiles" ie, pulls out of his ass. In any objective study of rape, compiled by professionals without an axe to grind, the results are always the same. The majority of rapes are perpetrated by someone who knows the victim personally - often a friend or family member. The number of rapes in Italy has remained more or less steady (between 4 and 5.000 a year) starting long before the arrival of large numbers of immigrants. I wouldn't doubt that immigrants rape out of proportion to their numbers in the population, because of poverty, anger, mental health issues related to separation from family and native language, frustration at inability to meet people of the opposite sex, etc - but that doesn't mean that they commit the majority.

by Anonymousreply 48August 23, 2022 8:22 AM

[quote] “The murder of Alika Ogorchukwu is dismaying,’’ Enrico Letta, a former premier and the head of the left-wing Democratic Party, wrote Saturday on Twitter, naming the vendor who died Friday. “Unheard of ferocity. Widespread indifference. There can be no justification.”

A politician can use the murder of a Nigerian, but the use of a Guinean raping a Ukrainian draws outrage. People don’t want anything to disrupt the flow of migrants from Africa to Europe.

by Anonymousreply 49August 23, 2022 9:22 AM

I think the outrage was the posting of the VIDEO, not the use of the STORY, r49. I think there are lots of reasons for people to want to stop or slow the flow of immigrants coming across the Mediterranean, not least the dangerous conditions of the crossings, and the hostile reception waiting on the other side. I don't think there are hordes of people from any political party in Italy or elsewhere in Europe who see these migrations as a good thing. But absent a total blockade of the Mediterranean, checking every single boat with warships, it is very difficult to stop the flow completely - and then you have to divide the people of Italy into those who believe in treating people in awful circumstances humanely and those who don't. The far right parties don't have a solution - they just want their followers to keep parroting their party line that all crime and all problems in the country stem from the immigrants -that without them, Italy would be a paradise without crime and without economic problems.

by Anonymousreply 50August 23, 2022 9:31 AM

R50, Italy only has to target making successful attempts to enter illegally very rare, and not target achieving zero cases. Yes, the people of Italy will be divided between those who want to do the right thing by preventing the migrants from entering the country and so preventing any crimes the migrants may commit and those who only care about the migrants and not at all about what harm any of the migrants may inflict, but what can you do?

by Anonymousreply 51August 23, 2022 9:50 AM

[quote] I wouldn't doubt that immigrants rape out of proportion to their numbers in the population, because of poverty, anger, mental health issues related to separation from family and native language, frustration at inability to meet people of the opposite sex, etc - but that doesn't mean that they commit the majority.

35.5% of prisoners in Italian jails are immigrants. The number is even higher if you include Italian citizens of a foreign background. So they do cause a wildly disproportionate number of crimes.

Do you read the Italian papers and crime reports? I do. Have you ever lived there? I have.

[quote]The far right parties don't have a solution - they just want their followers to keep parroting their party line that all crime and all problems in the country stem from the immigrants

Calling you a cunt would be an insult for cunt R55.

There is a big difference between random assault from some maniac and 1500 idiots attacking 500 women who dared to go out alone in New Year's eve night.

And yes, white Europeans are far less likely to commit sexual assaults, particularly mass rapes than men from more misogynist cultures, cultures that genitally mutilate women and where it is expected that women will be closed at home and not go out without male relatives and with fully covered body and where the women going out at night is seen as prey asking to be raped.

In Sweden, though foreign born men make 20% of population they commit almost 50% of rapes. Most of them are from Middle East/North Africa and the rest of Africa.

According to the researchers, Swedish-born offenders with Swedish-born parents accounted for 40.8% of the offenders. But, strikingly, almost half of the offenders were born outside of Sweden (47.7%). Of those foreign-born offenders, 34.5% were from the Middle East/North Africa, with 19.1% hailing from the rest of Africa. As a percentage of all convicted perpetrators, therefore, 16.4% were foreign-born individuals from the Middle East/North Africa, and 9.1% were foreign-born individuals from Africa (excluding North Africa).

How far does this signify over-representation? On the basis of population records kept by the official agency Statistics Sweden (SCB), approximately 20% (19.7%) of the Swedish population are foreign-born individuals. Among those convicted of rape and perpetrated rape, the foreign-born account for 47.7% of those convicted — so they are over-represented by a factor of 2.4.

by Anonymousreply 66August 23, 2022 11:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 67August 23, 2022 11:41 AM

by Anonymousreply 68August 23, 2022 11:42 AM

Who TF rapes a 55 year old woman? And in daylight on the street? A savage African. These types do it it to their own in their countries of origin as well. Next up: machete attacks.

[Quote]you can't just make statistics up

They are legitimate governmental statistics which you have acknowledged but refuse to accept. Too woke for facts.

White Europeans using rape to foment genocide? Why, I never!

"The RapeWaffen Division channel is a white supremacist channel that openly promotes rape and murder as part of the quest for race war."

You don't believe this, R78?

SNL even did an entire skit about how sexually aggressive their men are, towards women.

So you need to shut the fuck up.

This is how Americans view Italians.

R80 Nice try.

The most dangerous places for women are black and brown:

India, Syria, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Yemen, Nigeria...

Yeah, but keep trying to make it about "white supremacy". Don't let facts get in your way.

R5, Italy has ten million political parties and a new government every week.

by Anonymousreply 84August 23, 2022 7:48 PM

R81 Idiot I have family in Italy, have visited there multiple times and know the situation there! You don't know what the fuck you are talking about. I've been to the Greek Islands during vacation season and once again that Italian male style is extremely aggressive towards women. Not in a comical way but in a creepy way. Add to that the chauvinism of the men there is too much. You have no idea what women are up against there compared to other countrues. Then you have the mother love on top of that. Where the mother spoils the male child so much no woman could compete or compare with that.

Tought shit, cunt!

Why don't you despicable pigs go and start another World War? You did so well with the first two.

Fucking animals.

And you have the nerve to criticize others.

by Anonymousreply 90August 23, 2022 7:57 PM

Rape has been part of the human condition since we became sentient. And looking at the animal kingdom, it's ubiquitous there, but sex is dangerous for all participants, as the females of many species eat their mates after the deed! It has been used in ALL cultures as a tool of war and conquest, it has been a way of establishing male dominance over women who were getting too uppity, it has been a way of propagating future workers (masters impregnating slaves), and at getting at women who were unavailable due to higher social or economic castes. It is UNIVERSAL in all cultures within marriage - when wives would not willingly have sex, men would and will rape their wives. All this talk about what is natural to x, y, or z culture is ridiculous. In the 20th century, particularly the late 20th century, women have been more vocal about it, and in lots of countries have worked on codifying laws and also getting law enforcement to take it seriously. Before that, it was more a case of families doing their best to defend or protect the women of their families. That is still the case in most of the "brown and black" nations mentioned above. Rape is still deplored, but it is not considered so much a matter of laws and police as that a family that did not do its job of protecting its own women In most cultures in most ages in most parts of the parts of the world, men have rarely suffered full repercussions for it. In many cultures, including our own, women have been blamed for it - and not just in the past. ("She dressed too provocatively, that's why it happened, who could blame him".).

Before we get too high and mighty about "white people" not doing it, let's just be clear. The reason that EVERY black person in the US whose family dates to before the civil war has some percentage of white blood, is because there was white upon black rape in virtually every slave-holding situation. The reason that in all of central and south America, all the people are a mix of Spanish or Portuguese and natives, is white upon native rape.

It's a sign of weak intellectual argument to say that OTHER people are doing it - that our own people don't do it. The reality is that rape is still ubiquitous and not something done only by non-natives of the country.

by Anonymousreply 91August 23, 2022 8:00 PM

52% of rapes in Rome are committed by immigrants. 59% of rapes in Milan are committed by immigrants.

The great majority are Africans. These are the facts. No amount of deflection can erase them.

[quote]Italy has ten million political parties and a new government every week.

Ok. And tell us what that actually means to the lives of Italians. To the social order. Explain it to us.

Meanwhile in the US in the last 30 years the gap between rich and poor has become obscene, still no effective gun laws, still no universal health care, shithole crime-ridden cities only nice if you're rich, absurd levels of student debt that exist no where else in the world. And on and on.

But tell us how Italy's government has so woefully failed its people.

R91, you are far too smart for the right-wing Fascist Nazis posting on this thread.

Your reasoning and logic is perfect, but don't expect this brain dead animals to be able to comprehend what you're saying.

by Anonymousreply 96August 23, 2022 8:05 PM

r92, if you are so sure of your statistics, publish the SOURCE or link it. An article quoting the interior minister is NOT a source. If there are statistics compiled by the government, they should be in an official publication put out by the government. Show us THAT. If you cannot link to that, then forgive us, but we're going to take your "facts" with a huge grain of salt.

Who is saying it's only one group doing it? The point of this thread is that European countries are DE-EMPHASIZING the fact that immigrants from Africa and the Middle East are committing a disproportionate number of these rapes due to the fact that they come from very misogynistic countries and religions. They are protecting black and brown immigrant men at the cost of native women. That's the problem and it's a huge one.

Women, again, get the shit end of the stick. As with the trans lunacy here in the US, if it takes the right wing to show it for what it is, so be it. In this situation, the facts are the facts and the progressives in both the US and Europe have chosen to stop being the party based in reality, facts, and truth. When you start denying the actual numbers, you lose.

by Anonymousreply 99August 23, 2022 8:11 PM

[quote]An article quoting the interior minister is NOT a source.

The interior minister of Italy is a woman, Luciana Lamorgese. Of the left under the government of Conte and Draghi.

But yeah, I'm sure she's lying.

Funny how you mention "facts" repeatedly, yet you have presented even one FACT to support your argument.

You're a right-wing lying pig. Just like all the others.

All you spew is hate and rhetoric, designed to divide people and turn them against each other.

You're a charlatan. Just like all the other right-wing fascist NAZIS.

I’m sick of both the hypocritical right wing and the hypocritical left wing. Both are highly indifferent towards violence unless they can use it to support their agenda,

The right squawks when immigrants in Europe commit crimes (which the left downplay or seek to hide). The left squawks when racist or right wing extremist crimes are committed (which the right downplays).

Both groups are highly tolerant of violence committed by their own kind.

by Anonymousreply 105August 24, 2022 12:45 AM

The Fratelli d'Italia are tolerant of "violence committed by their own kind"?

What? You know nothing about them.

We have these same problems with immigrants from Africa in Spain. Spain, Italy and Greece are taking the biggest blows from this invasion for obvious reasons. I bloody loathe it. Almost 1M illegal immigrants in Spain.

[quote] We have these same problems with immigrants from Africa in Spain. Spain, Italy and Greece are taking the biggest blows from this invasion for obvious reasons.

Yeah, the same reasons that invaders from Africa - you know, the MOORS - invaded Spain, over 500 years ago.

Are you people brain dead?

This has been going on for centuries. It's not new.

Yet you act like it's a recent phenomenon.

Idiots.

by Anonymousreply 109August 24, 2022 5:37 PM

R109, were those groups welcomed with open arms? The idiot is looking back at you in the mirror.

by Anonymousreply 110August 24, 2022 5:41 PM

Why are posters even defending immigrants from a regions where execution of homosexuals are legal and women are second-class citizens who have to cover themselves all the time? Is it a surprise that such backwards traditions ingrain misogyny and violence that leads to acts like rape? If people are humanists, they would help the countries the immigrants are coming from to change their culture instead of making a developed countries regress by taking them in.

by Anonymousreply 111August 24, 2022 6:19 PM

R111, it's because gay men hate women more than they hate homophobes, especially the straight male homophobes that they lust after.
