if you're wearing a standard in the appropriate size and around average at an angle is acceptable without much worry of a criminalized slip.

if you're larger, downward is recommended and if you're a show-er instead of a grower, with a bit of a tuck as well.

for those on the smaller side, positioning it upward may reduce tenting and improve aesthetics.

but in any case, you may need a swim jock to help keep everything in place. . . if unable to find a legitimate swimjock, a dance belt, briefs or other atheletic supporters can work but may require alteration depending on your suit.

It's only in the US where Speedos = gay. In most of Europe (and other places), bikini bathing suits are the norm for me.

Speedos are wonderful -- and perfectly suitable for some gays. But other gays suit the board short look more and would look silly in speedos.

They're fairly common in Europe. I wouldn't wear them to the beach, but I do if I'm going to swim at a pool because they're a lot easier to swim in than shorts. It's not like I'm showing off, as 99% of the time I wear them they're underwater.

I do at least 50 lengths so I prefer to reduce the drag. I learnt to swim in them so it just feels natural to me. We mostly call them "trunks" rather than speedos here.

That said, it has to be a plain coloured speedo with a classic cut; one that would actually be used for swimming. I don't like any of those garish coloured suits that look closer to a thong and are just for posing in.
