Friend asked where I got my soap, since he's not able to find Ivory. Told him I use Body Wash, he was surprised. Also told him a mutual friend showers using Suave shampoo. Do you use still use bar soap to bathe?
Bar Soap

Yes, but the following is very hard to find, at least at my Woodman's and Walmart:
Oil of Olay - Unscented -Sensitive Skin.
Best bar soap evah.
Don't know if it comes in body wash.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 21, 2022 5:36 PM |
Yup, still use Ivory.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 21, 2022 5:45 PM |
Ivory is the best by far. It's available in most any grocery store and bodega, not to mention supermarkets. I can only think OP's friend is looking in too many upscale shops.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 21, 2022 5:49 PM |
Bar soap is environmentally better than plastic body wash containers. Bar soap is being seen as a smarter choice in upscale brands in 2022
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 21, 2022 5:50 PM |
Yes, I also, according to the internet, am the only white person who uses a washcloth.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 21, 2022 5:55 PM |
Bar soap generates lots of paper labels that can’t be recycled though so I’m not so sure about that. The plastic bottles body wash comes in can be.
Also bar soap is swarming with bacteria after a while, whereas body wash is much more sanitary.

Nope, r5. I use them too.

I use 100% shea butter bar soap that I make myself. One pound of shea butter super fatted at 20% makes a ton of moisturizing soap, and it is easy to make.

Cetaphil bar soap is very nice. Smells nice, rinses away clean. It’s good.

R9 your perceptions are unfounded by facts. Nice try. Just keep using your body wash. Nobody cares anyway Wyatt you do.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 21, 2022 6:04 PM |
I prefer using bar soap for my body these days as I find them generally better at lathering (also more economical).
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 21, 2022 6:05 PM |
R10, you can also use their liquid wash. That’s what I use, and it is very gentle on the skin, while doing the job.
All soaps and even shampoos, are usually very harsh on the skin, and throw off your PH Balance.
No bueno.

People have the wrong idea about getting clean. They have been trained to believe that soaps and body washes must get sudsy, in order to correlate that one is clean, after bathing with sudsy soaps and washes.
Not true.
The ones with zero suds are the ones that get you very clean, without irritating your skin or drying it out.
Cetaphil…

Been using Safeguard™ for decades after years using Zest™(which caused a nasty breakout once, I assumed they altered their formula) Happy with the former, bought several dozen bars of it when I thought, needlessly as it happened, that it was being discontinued. I use it for everything below the neck.
I really like Kiss My Face™(which was discontinued for awhile, but returned after the company either restructured or was bought out) to wash my face and lately have been using it for shaving(I put the too-small-to-use shards in my shaving mug, it lathers up a treat)
Never cared for Ivory™(it always made me sneeze) although my mom and grandmother loved it.
I keep a bar of Lava™ soap in the kitchen to use if my hands are excessively grimy, like they usually are after some gardening chores. It seems to rinse better than the antibacterial/glycerin liquid soaps, so it's better if I'll be handling food.
My husband LOVED Magno™, for the color and the scent. Is it still being made?
I can never remember if it's Pear's™ soap or Neutrogena™ that is mild enough to use when brushing your teeth. Made the mistake years ago of using the incorrect one. Yuck!
When I see bars of Fels Naphtha™ soap for sale I always smile, it was a staple in many households(for a plethora of uses) when I was a kid. They must sell tons of it since it's still in production.
r46 I use Dove Bars™ of ice cream. 😁
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 21, 2022 6:52 PM |
R47 I still use Fels Naphtha. It comes in handy for a lot of things. My mother used it often on my dad’s greasy clothes.

Another, like r27, whose bar soap comes from Aleppo. It's made with laurel oil and sold by way of a retailer in Spain.

I bought some Sasquatch pine tar bar soap but took it back because I didn't realize that it has "heavy grit" in it.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 21, 2022 7:19 PM |
Bars of soap aren't allowed in many settings because of the bacteria that forms on and under wet bars. Our schools and group homes switched to liquid soaps in the '80s, then people started buying Soft Soap for their homes, so I'd forgotten bar soap even existed until I saw a sliver recently in a friend's bathroom.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 21, 2022 7:26 PM |
I love Kirk's coco castile bar soap. It's the only soap that doesn't turn my skin red, itchy, and blotchy. It's easy to keep bar soap dry between uses, not seeing where this is a problem unless you keep it directly under a leaky shower head.

[quote]It's easy to keep bar soap dry between uses, not seeing where this is a problem unless you keep it directly under a leaky shower head.
But it doesn't dry immediately, which is why it's not allowed any more where many people may use it frequently, before it dries completely. People can buy bar soaps for their homes or personal bathrooms at work, but whenever a frau puts a bar of soap (usually reeking with excessive fragrance) in one of the staff bathrooms on our campus, it's immediately removed.

Body wash makes the shower floor slippery and I feel like it leaves a residue on my skin.
I like a good goat milk soap but it has to be very lightly fragranced. No major brands, usually hit or miss from craft fairs.
My go to bar soap is Market Basket’s shea butter soap. It has a very light soapy smell. I have to go to Massachusetts to get it so usually stock up when I do.

I used both, bar soap, usually Dial (the Spring Water scent) or Coast, and believe or not the Arm & Hammer Body Wash is great.
There's no oil in the A&H (I hate Oil of Olay & Dove body wash, my partner likes that crap, it's too greasy, I guess if you have dry skin, it's fine), the A&H has a great clean scent and leaves me refreshed.
I also like the Dial for Men body wash, it comes in two scents.
The A&H Body Wash is available at DL fave, Dollar Tree. The same size A&H bottle is over $4 at Rite Aid.

R47, as mentioned above, Magno still exists. The bar soap I rarely see in shops, the shower/bath gel is everywhere. There are a few options beyond the traditional scent (including weed, who knows why.) I wasn't sure about at all at first about the classic scent, but quickly came to like.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | August 21, 2022 9:11 PM |
I hate soap scum in my bathtub/shower, so I switched to body wash because I read somewhere that it doesn't leave soap scum (because it's technically detergent, not soap). Amazingly, it works. I don't have to scrub down my bath/shower every week now; I just rinse it in very hot water with the handheld shower attachment after a shower or bath, and scrub only when I start seeing dirt (maybe every 6 weeks).
I use Dove sensitive skin foaming wash and a Salux skin cloth (a Japanese scrubbing washcloth).

I think some of you are missing the "joke." The "white people don't use washcloths" concept is some kind of viral stupidity that's been going around black Twitter for ages. First it was that white people never wash their legs; then that white people don't wash their hands; then that they don't wash their faces. The general gist is that white people are feral, filthy, and stinky, with strange and superstitious customs.
Twitter. It just never disappoints.
I think it's ridiculous. I'm white, like the rest of us wypipo, I bathe once every full moon, whether I need it or not, in cow piss and dung, as our cultural customs dictate.

Yet more lies and bullshit which is also posted about on LipShit Alley. They hate white people there, mostly white women. However, they seem to worship some disgusting white comedian, forget his name, because he's married to a Black woman.
It's usually some Black female going on about her "white college roommate who never washed her legs". "never used a washcloth", "used the same washcloth on her vagina, ass and her body" and "my white roommate used the kitchen sponge to wash in the shower". I guess some of this could be true, especially if you live with a stoner.
I heard a story about a home health aide who used the same pair of reusable Playtex gloves to wash a bed bound patient, change their diapers and do the housework! Talk about getting an infection!

After years of using body washes or gift soaps bestowed on me, I’ve bought Dial in the past year. Some surgeon’s offices recommend using it before surgery (like Hibiclens) so it must have some valid antibacterial qualities. As well, it’s recommended for children with impetigo.
Since I rarely wear deodorant due to allergy issues I convince myself the Dial residue helps fight BO. But maybe others think I stink.

Dial & PHisoHex cleanser both had the chemical Hexachlorophene removed from it years ago. It was discovered to be a carcinogen. People want to know how and why they developed cancer years down the line. Just look at the garbage put in so many products which were deemed to be safe.
This same chemical was also in Ipana toothpaste! Bristol-Myers' discontinued Ipana toothpaste brand at one time contained hexachlorophene.
The formula for Dial soap was modified to remove hexachlorophene after the FDA ended over-the-counter availability in 1972.

Using body wash seems like a big waste of plastic to me. I like pré de provence soap. I store it on a metal soap dish that allows it to dry.
As soap is so strongly alkeline, this hysteria over germs seems a bit silly to me. The most germ-ridden things in the shower would be the loofas and poufs that some people use.

I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower, I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then apply an herb mint facial mask, which I leave on for ten minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

by Anonymous | reply 122 | August 21, 2022 10:52 PM |
I'm mixed and I wash my legs. Probably the of color part of me makes me do that.
But I was staying with this somewhat upper class white guy on Long Island and I went to shower and there was no wash cloths. I yelled out "Where's the wash cloths?" And he VERY CONDESCENDINGLY said "I don't use wash cloths. No one I know use wash cloths."
I chocked this up to what my grandparents called the "White people are crazy 🤪" theory. It was used for everything.

Bar soap and wash cloth, great for rubbing scrubbing off dirt, yes some of actually get real dirt on us.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | August 21, 2022 11:18 PM |
I use a washcloth because I like it. But what's the difference if you do or don't? Nobody uses a washcloth to wash their hands, and your hands generally get dirtier than any part of you other than maybe your ass.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | August 21, 2022 11:21 PM |
People don't use washcloths or scrubbies because they so quickly become bacteria farms when left in the shower, and because no one wants to use the same cloth on their face as they do the rest of their body.
I use a cloth on my face in the shower and that's it, and even that requires a tall stack of washcloths because you need a new one every time. It's a pain. I absolutely get why people wouldn't do it.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | August 21, 2022 11:25 PM |
Old english lavender, the lavender in it kills bacteria.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | August 22, 2022 12:07 AM |
You talk about wash cloths being "bacteria farms" and then use it only on your face. That doesn't make sense.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | August 22, 2022 12:08 AM |
How many of you are using shower gel with no scrunchie or loofa? ...you're definitely not getting clean with just your hands and shower gel.

Mary R118 is 83 but is often mistaken for 80.

“Accidentally” dropping the body wash just isn’t as convincing.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | August 22, 2022 12:42 AM |
How about those of you who actually work in fields where you get dirty and sweaty? How the hell do you get the funk and dirt off your bodies? Just using soap with your hands sure isn't going to work to get even one day of work related dirt off you body.
Most normal people use both a wash cloth and a body/back brush. What's the big deal about using one wash cloth a day? I cannot believe some of these responses.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | August 22, 2022 12:43 AM |
You're just going to have to seethe all day about the fact that I, a stranger on the internet, said that I can understand why people don't want to deal with buying a stack of washcloths and having to launder them frequently, r134. You'll just have to go around all day gasping in shock because you cannot BELIEVE some of these RESPONSES!
by Anonymous | reply 135 | August 22, 2022 12:47 AM |
My dermatologist told me you should only use soap on your underarms and groin and ass. Soap strips the natural oils from your skin.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | August 22, 2022 2:12 AM |
R1, you obviously are a DL nothing, since you wasted the R1 spot by rushing in with twaddle and not performing your job of ridiculing the OP. THAT is what an R1 is to do, before we all move on.
Moving on, I also use Oil of Olay Unscented for Sensitive Skin. Even though your DL skills stink, at least we know your body doesn't!

Trader Joe's TEA TREE OIL, discontinued as a bar soap. Available as a wash.

Im using Trader Joe's oatmeal bar soap, it is not as good as the Tea Tree Oil bar soap.

I am white and use bar soap and a washcloth to wash everything. And a new washcloth every day. I’m not an animal.
I was unaware this made me unusual.

I have Little Seed Farm goat milk soap and I like it. When it’s super hot and humid I use Irish Spring body wash. Can’t use it on my face, though.
When I travel I take good old Cetaphil and it’s fine.

R136 that is what I do. Soap on the pits, ass, and cock and balls. Nowhere else. I use a shampoo bar and conditioner bar - the conditioner bar is more for my scalp than for my hair, as my scalp gets dry. I wash my hair every third day, and just rinse it other days.
Cold process soap is easy to make, you just need oil, water, and lye - fragrances and colors are optional. There are calculators on-line for the amounts to use. Just be careful, and remember to always add lye to water, never add water to lye (it can cause an explosive reaction.)
If you add water to lye you might die - a little rhyme to remind you.

Thanks for the links r63 and r68. I'm an infectious disease epidemiologist and I'll admit I've avoided bar soap for years because I was taught that pseudomonas grows under it. It's not really a threat to most people, and I figured rinsing the soap probably took care of it anyways. But they were still telling us that 20 years ago. I do believe it's true (pseudomonas can grow on bars of soap) but now at least I know it isn't likely transmitted from person to soap to person.
I don't do soap public health, so it's not like I've been spreading bad info around for 20 years, but always good to learn something new.

R47 I love the scent of Safeguard, Bronzie. I always keep some in my linen closet. On fragrance sites, it is said to be related to a famous perfume, or based on its formula. Sadly, I do not recall the name of the perfume in question. Perhaps some other posters may know. I hope P&G do not discontinue it, as they've sold off so many bar soap brands over the years. It is definitely a classic!
by Anonymous | reply 157 | August 22, 2022 6:10 AM |
r153 Give your soap a sniff, if it smells like grape juice either toss it, or scrub off a layer to two..
r157 The scent IS great, as is the deodorant power. I keep a few bars unboxed to dry out a bit, it makes the soap longer lasting when in use.
r98 Soap-on-a-rope was invented for sailors aboard their ships. It prevented the soap from "accidentally" falling to the shower floor, which might have invited unwelcome(?) advances. It DID make washing your feet rather difficult though, since you could never life your legs high enough when the soap was hanging around your neck(old joke, from an uncle who was a Navy veteran 😉)
Washcloths are definitely the way to go. I don't understand why so many people do not like them, they are: a good, if mild, scrubber and exfoliator; easy to launder( I use one, rinse it, hang it up to dry then in the hamper it goes); economical to purchase(you can usually get deals on a 6 or 10 or 12 pack) Wash your face first with it, THEN use it on the rest of your body. Or use another one, if that's too ick-y for you.

Doll, I'm not seething over moronic strangers who don't use washcloths or have bizarre bathing rituals. This thread sure doesn't affect my life personally .
Most of you must reek. Most humans simply cannot get clean by using just their hands and soap.
What's the matter, you don't own a washer? These days, even in NYC apartments, landlords have included washers AND dryers. There's no excuse, you simply seem cheap, lazy and ignorant. Who doesn't own and use washcloths?!
Unless you use a powerful industrial strength showerhead, DEAR, using your hands to wash yourself, simply isn't going to work, you will still be left with some level of dirt, and products you use on your body, such as lotions or sunscreens.

Sisley’s soapless cleansing bar for face, Musgo Real for pits, Dior's Ambre Nuit for taint and hole, Diptyque's Eau rose for penis glans.

[quote]I use a deep pore cleanser lotion.
R118 is the queen of MARY!!! You seem insufferable. All that effort and still no one notices dear…you aren’t anymore beautiful or young.

Plastic isn't the only issue with bodywash. The primary ingredient in body wash is water. Water is heavy. Shipping water around the country increases emissions. Bar soap is more concentrated, smaller, and more product can fit in the same trunk.
Same thing with liquid laundry detergent. Concentrated powder detergents are more eco-friendly, as they don't contain water.

R176, I loved the "There, I Said It!" thread. Let's do another.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | August 22, 2022 4:39 PM |
I love bar soap. I feel you get cleaner with it and a washcloth (yes I said it), than using a shower pouf and gel. Shower poufs are bacterial nightmares as well.
If you use a soap saver your bar soap won't get all soft and weird on the bottom, it dries out. We have a few in the house.
Favorite bar soaps are: original Irish Spring, yellow Dial, and Zest. Safeguard is ok too. HATE Ivory, had my mouth washed out with soap a few times with it and and I don't like the ginger smell.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | August 22, 2022 4:43 PM |
R175, I haven't used EC30, but I have used Frey's laundry sheets. I like them, but most of these products advertise themselves as plastic free, and they aren't. They are made with polyvinyl alcohol, which is a plastic. It can be broken down in a water treatment plant that has the right microbes, but most don't. As a result, they contribute to micro plastic pollution.
On the plus side, they are lighter to ship, and can be cut to a smaller size to suit the size of the load/machine, unlike a pod, which is wrapped in PVA.
Ease NY makes a laundry sheet using recycled cellulose fiber instead of PVA. It doesn't dissolve, but the sheet is compostable. I haven't tried it, but plan to.
