The grating, hammy, awful Bella Thorne taking over the role of Teenie Henrickson in Season Four of "Big Love." It was a bit part but she ruined every scene she was in.

Georgette on MTM? I like the actress in smaller dosages, and she could be funny when she had a bit of bite under her sweetness (Everyone Loves Raymond and even at the end of MTM when she started to get irritated with Ted). However, the later episodes that her and Ted's relationship was the focus in an attempt to humanize Ted could be painful. Ted would act like an ass the entire episode and learn a lesson at the end, but clearly not long lasting, since Ted would be the same man child in the next episode. If you are going to have some repetitive character growth episodes, at least show some character growth outside those episodes.

Although to be fair, some of Maury's home episodes were just as bad. I recently saw the episode where he desperately wants a son and has an insta-adoption of a 10 year old Vietnamese orphan who shows up out of nowhere in the last few minutes.

Howard on Bob Newhart. Emily and Bob had enough chemistry and potential conflicts that he was not really necessary for the home scenes and the characters at the office were funnier.

Jerry could have been played as well by a Muppet on Seinfeld. All the others were indispensable and made the show what it was.

Richard Lewis on Curb Your Enthusiasm. I know several people who have told me they won't watch it because he was in it for a while. He's that much of a turnoff to people.

Mrs. Maisel. I bet a version of the show in which she is never actually shown could be better. All Joel and her perky bosoms and Maisel's parents in their cool clothes. I would believe Maisel was hilariously funny only if I never heard Maisel try to deliver jokes.

Robert Rodan on Dark Shadows. Adam was an annoying, whiny little baby who threw temper tantrums every time he didn't get his way and got annoying very quickly.

Not a great show to begin with, but Rules of Engagement brought on a character in the later seasons whJaso was the assistant of the David Spade character. His sole purpose seemed to be to kiss Spade's ass while secretly rolling his eyes.

Jason on The Good Place. The actor could be funny and endearing, but the character was a bit more one-note and ran its course before the show was over.

Michelle on Drag Race.

Loretta Switt, MASH. Every line in every scene is delivered by shrieking and screaming. Never watchable and always annoying. JK Rowling as Loretta to thank for inventing the Mandrake.

I know I'm in the minority, but I always liked Dawn. She was supposed to be an annoying little sister, but Michelle Trachtenberg made her annoying and someone you felt sorry for at the same time. It would have been a much better show if they all lived in a tent. And somewhat closer to the reality.

Darrin #2, Bewitched. Dick Sargent was not a good replacement for Dick York. Seems that Darrin #2 was not as much fun as #1 or perhaps it was how is role was written. Either way, Sam would have been able to carry the show once Darrin #1 departed. Perhaps Edora turned Darrin into an ashtray and couldn't change him back.

Tara on True Blood. That actress was so terrible, just plain bad.

I would kick Alexis Bledel off "Gilmore Girls" and replace her (as Rory) with someone less wooden and less one-note. While I really enjoyed the series, Bledel was consistently out-acted by all her co-stars, and (to me) never felt authentic or natural in the role.

I suppose this is more "recast a character on your favorite TV series," which could make for another fun thread.

As a child, I didn't even register that two different actors played Darren. I guess I was only watching for the magic and Endora and the wacky aunts and uncles. As an adult, I can't believe how much Darren number two ruined the show. He was so sour and cold, always chastising Sam. It made it seem as if he became more controlling toward her as the marriage went on, whereas Dick York's character seemed weirdly authoritarian at times but it didn't matter because he was so smitten with Samantha and the power balance very clearly was tipped toward her and not him. So it seemed like he was desperately trying to assert himself because he had no power, whereas his replacement...I got bad vibes about their family life after the cameras are off!

So the question itself is a bit ambiguous. It says a cast member not a character. So for instance Debra Messing. I thought she had moments where she was really good. To compare her to Lucille Ball is ridiculous. But I think this is an actress who clearly landed on 3rd base when she thought she hit a home run. I actually think she’s the weak link in the show. Another example is Caroline in the City and Lea Thompson. I’ve been watching it on Paramount. It’s actually really funny. I had no idea. But Lea Thompson is clearly very sweet but out of her league. She is not a comedic actress. A much stronger actress would have made the show better.

The series had been circling the drain for some time but big Rose and her annoying whiny voice, with the two redundant children hastened it's demise. It made no sense to bring them on anyway because there was enough adult Walton kids around to take care of the house and their younger siblings.

Robert California on The Office. I love James Spader, but the character was out of place within The Office series.

R50 Rose was fine and I liked her romance with Patty Duke's dad, but I didn't care for the kids.

Jane Leeves/Daphne on Frasier. Underwritten from the start, and a mostly monotonously acted one-note performance. Plus there was absolutely zero chemistry between her and Niles, no matter how much the writers tried to force it. My headcanon was always that the Niles/Daphne romance was a result of Niles, under his father's watchful eye, retreating deeper and deeper into the closet, and Daphne was just a means to that end.

I love David Hyde Pierce, but he just couldn't act his way out of this dumb plot twist. It's entirely the showrunner's fault for moving from the droll Niles/Maris relationship to the boring, hackneyed will-they-or-won't-they schtick.

Gleek, the Wonder Twin’s sidekick monkey from the Super Friends. There’s no purpose for Gleek since Jana can transform into any animal by saying ‘Wonder Twins Powers Activate!’

Knots Landing really didn't need Bobby Jacoby OR Brian Austin Greene because the Brian Cunningham character was entirely inconsequential. Tonya Crowe sucked up all the air in the room.

Falcon Crest: Lorenzo Lamas. Seriously.

I viewed the ratings after Kes left in The Gift & she didn't bring them up at all. Just a lot of media talk in the US.

TPTB were scared to have 7 & Tuvok in scenes together & they were right. She is Vulcan #2 on the show = a super strong, smart egomaniac seething underneath it all. TPTB were even concerned that the 2 characters spoke in the same manner.

Naomi W.'s mom was written off so 7 could be her NuMommy & have viewers be drawn to her. They even said Samantha didn't appear in Neelix's goodbye episode because they "forgot" about her. How nice.

I agree with the other cast members that show became Star Trek Borg after her arrival & I was bored with most of her Borg plots.

Borg nanoprobes to the rescue. Seven did EVERYTHING on the ship while the crew remained in status for an episode. The Doc was still around to monitor her vitals. Ho hum. If 1 person could run the entire ship it made several episodes where the crew was "vital" a joke.

I think her catsuit won't age well as time marches on & I laughed when they tried the same stunt for the Vulcan on the prequel show but she couldn't save such a dull premise. They should've put 7 in a regular uniform after the first year. It was also dumb to let 7 wear her hair up while telling Kate that it aged her (about a dozen years between them). So it adds a decade or 2 to a 42 year old Kate but not to 7? Yeah right.

Larry Manetti (Rick) on the original Magnum P.I. series. The actor was annoying and his character added nothing to the show. Larry Manetti/Rick never really fit in.

Knots Landing - Paige and Greg became really overexposed around season 10. They became the two main characters and it was too much.

Gilmore Girls- Kirk owns this thread. The Palladinos were clearly self-enamored with this creation of theirs. He was insufferable.

Jodie Shittaker. She didn't even TRY. Colin Baker was wrong for the part and Matt Smith can't act, but at least they made an effort and remembered their damn lines. By contrast, her main co-star -- Shiva Kalaiselvan, who plays her gf/ex-gf/gf-again Leyla -- is great, and would have made a much better series regular.

Obviously, I am not the audience she was brought on for, but I caught some episodes recently for the first time in a while. She gave off kind of a smug vibe and which carried over to Batman in their scenes together. The nature of the show was such it probably would have run out of steam anyway, but she really did alter the feel of the show from fun to a bit overbearing.

I would say the thing that should have been kicked off Caroline in the City was the attempt of a romantic relationship between her and Richard. While she was probably the weakest actor, she was likable and would have been fine as the normal girl that grounds the show with the crazies around her. The show could be funny, but would come to a crashing halt when they would focus on their "romance".

When was Batman ever a TV series? Is this the same Yvonne from the Follys Show that the eldergays love so much? She was on the Addams Family I think.

I disagree about Daphne on Frasier. Without her, Martin would have no one to really play off of. The earliest iterations of Daphne were much better when she was a kooky psychic. The problem arose when they wrote her into a more normalized character as Niles’s love interest.

Roz was so much more fun than Daphne. Can't stand Jane Leeves accent or her predictable cadences. Daphne was never once funny - she served a purpose in the first few seasons.

Not that this is my favorite show, but I’d nix SJP for cast and Charlotte for character. Charlotte never fit in and I always felt Stamford deserved a fully developed character. I would also recenter around Samantha’s character and business.

"Favorite" is a stretch for some of these but they came to mind:

Supernatural- Castiel and the whole angel/God crew: bringing heaven into it ruined the whole show. The horror aspect, the fun blue collar personality = gone.

Taxi- Bobby: he was fine but I always found him superfluous when they had Tony Danza filling the young, dumb kid role.

Game of Thrones- Daenarys Targaryen: take her and her 90s syndicated TV fantasy storyline out, and the show could have focused on Westeros and been finished nicely in 6 seasons, tops. You miss dragons? Fine, give Jon a dragon egg to hatch in later seasons. It can die fighting The Others or something.

House M.D.- Chase: brought nothing to the show, ever.

Buffy- Xander and, in later seasons, Willow: Xander was an unfunny dick and Willow became an egomaniac. Both were pretty shitty friends to Buffy by the end.

Angel- Gunn: in a perfect world, Doyle's actor wouldn't have died and Gunn the Wet Blanket wouldn't be needed to fill out the cast.

True Blood: Sookie Stackhouse: when she wasn't being annoying, she was just bland. Get rid of her and just center the show on the vampires trying make being known by humans work in a small Louisiana town.

Darrin. Didn't like either of them.

Walter Denton. Too old for the part. That phoney voice.

Gale Gordon. In whatever role he played.

Laramie should never have brought in Spring Byington. Jess and Slim didn't need a Mrs. Cooper (ala Batman) to make people think they weren't fucking like rabbits.

Bridget Moynahan as Erin on Blue Bloods. Her issues are exhausting, and no one cares if she promotes to anywhere with the assistant D.A. job. I am so done with her character. Get rid of her already.

Community - get rid of Chevy Chase, the character was just a complete asshole.

Parks and Recreation - Rob Lowe was amusing at first and he was good in the part, but I got tired of his unrelenting cheerfulness after a while.

“Murray” should have been re-cast from day one. Gavin McLeod managed to be both hammy and bland in the role.

The film Broadcast News, which in many ways was James L. Brooks retelling of MTM, showed everything the character of Murray could have been…as played so delightfully by Albert Brooks.

Now, I want to see Broadcast News.

Originally, Murray and Mary were supposed to have a contentious (vs. friendly) relationship. IIRC, Gavin McLeod said he wanted them to be friendly.

I remember when Broadcast News came out, one critic wrote that it was basically Mary having to choose between Ted and Murray.

Tim Conway on "The Carol Burnett Show," which went seriously downhill after she made him a regular and featured his tired, predictable shtick week after week.

He may have been necessary because the Angels kept changing. Seems like they had a new Angel every season. So, Bosley was the constant (in addition to the voice of Charlie).

No, they didn't. Having Supernatural run for another decade is what ruined it. The show should have ended after season 5 as originally planned.

I kind of like Cathy, but she really was not really needed.

Why are all these sitcoms from the 1950s? Are the regular Dataloungers really that OLD and WHITE?

R200 Most of the shows are mentioned are actually from the 60s, 70s and 80s. There was a thing called reruns and though I wasn't born in the 1950s I am aware of some of the shows of the 50s such as The Honeymooners and I Love Lucy that were played daily on TV back in the day and of course so much old TV is available on cable and online. And perhaps like me, many DLers haven't watched sitcoms in decades. I was in my 20s and 30s in the 80s and 90s and was out at clubs, parties, restaurants, movies, plays, at work of course . . . and now with streaming commercial TV is a stranger to me.

I hate SVU with a passion and I'd kick off Oleebia and her annoying kid. They can both drown in a bat of grease which ends up being set ablaze!!

I'd also kick off Penny and Bernadette from BBT.

Looks like they finally got rid of the blond detective from SVU, many years too late. She had more problems than Oleebia.

Kelli Giddish was the only one still worth watching on SVU, all the way back to when she was partnered and fucking the delicious Danny Pino. I stopped watching the show long ago. I think when Olivia beat her current rapist/captor with a pipe and yet later in the season he STILL escaped and came after her AGAIN. And she tried to talk him down.

Tina Yothers fit in fine on Family Ties until she went from cute kid to ugly teenager. They changed her character to 'cool teenager' which was laughable given how she looked. They tried to bring back the cuteness with Andy, but he was too young to be anything other than a prop for all the other characters. They should have just used Jennifer less and been more careful about her plotlines.

Janine Turner as Maggie O'Connell on "Northern Exposure," more for her recent turn as a right-wing nutjob, but really, there were plenty of actresses who could have played Maggie.

I'd kick Miss Barrie Youngfellow (Jan) off It's a Living. Pivot notwithstanding.

Had the show not been cancelled it would have eventually moved in this direction.

R238 I thought Alice was the most tolerable. Her fight with Jenny over hats was pretty funny.
