Maureen McGovern - I Have Alzheimer's

Saying in a simple statement: "I am no longer able to travel, perform in live concerts, or drive"

by Anonymousreply 51September 21, 2022 3:59 PM

I supposed she now has a reason to be gone, but she can't remember what it is.

There will be no morning after.

by Anonymousreply 2August 21, 2022 1:11 AM

There's got to be a morning after.

by Anonymousreply 3August 21, 2022 1:11 AM

This is no time for snark . Alzheimer’s is the most dreadful and cruel thing that can happen to a human being. Poor thing . Please pray !

by Anonymousreply 4August 21, 2022 1:16 AM

My heart goes out to her.

by Anonymousreply 5August 21, 2022 1:18 AM

We have known each other since 1982 when she was a guest star on Lyrics and Lyricists and was appearing in her first Broadway Show a replacement for Lynn Ronstat in The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway and doing a cabaret at Les Mouches too. She invited me to lots of stuff.

by Anonymousreply 6August 21, 2022 1:24 AM

Can you read my mind? Do you know what it is I’m thinking of? No seriously, do you? I can’t remember…

by Anonymousreply 7August 21, 2022 1:28 AM

[quote]Alzheimer’s is the most dreadful and cruel thing that can happen to a human being.

A'hem.

by Anonymousreply 8August 21, 2022 1:30 AM

This is sad news. I’ve always admired her strong, clear voice. She could always be counted on to perform at the Labor Day telethon. I would tune into the opening credits of “Angie” just to listen to her sing ‘Different Worlds’.

by Anonymousreply 9August 21, 2022 1:32 AM

R8, I would gladly take that relatively quick death than slow brain death

by Anonymousreply 10August 21, 2022 2:08 AM

She never really got the credit she deserved. She had an initial huge burst of success, then was reduced to working as a file clerk before recording the Love theme from Superman and Angie Theme which brought her back to the charts.

by Anonymousreply 11August 21, 2022 2:16 AM

Has Donna Pescow, former star of TV's "Angie", commented?

by Anonymousreply 12August 21, 2022 2:17 AM

So sorry to hear this. Her Gershwin CD (recorded live) is perfection. What a voice!

by Anonymousreply 13August 21, 2022 2:34 AM

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia - poor thing!

by Anonymousreply 14August 21, 2022 2:39 AM

Fuck, was just watching her on old Tony Awards. Very sad news.

by Anonymousreply 15August 21, 2022 2:40 AM

Isn’t Marcia Brady a little young to get that?

by Anonymousreply 16August 21, 2022 7:24 AM

Classy statement. I wish her well.

I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease. So now, I feel it is important to share it with you. In opening my heart, I hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.

At the moment I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life’s journey with my beloved family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends.

Unfortunately, as Alzheimer’s Disease progresses, the family often bears a heavy burden. I only wish there was some way I could spare them from this painful experience. When the time comes I am confident that with your help they will face it with faith and courage.

I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life.

Thank you, my friends. May God always bless you.

Rope,. Rock. HUGE burlap sack. River.

by Anonymousreply 19August 23, 2022 11:43 AM

Sad for her, but I'd be happy to never hear "There's Got to Be a Morning after" ever again.

by Anonymousreply 20August 23, 2022 11:50 AM

The theme to “Angie” just won’t sound the same now

by Anonymousreply 21August 23, 2022 12:01 PM

I love Different Worlds!

by Anonymousreply 22August 24, 2022 1:00 AM

This is terrible news.

She's a wonderful singer and Broadway performer who didn't get her due.

She is my favorite singer

by Anonymousreply 24August 24, 2022 1:10 AM

Maureen got great reviews for stepping into Nine and Pirates of Penzance on Broadway.

She was Margaret White in the original workshop of Carrie the musical, and she did a wonderful job with the songs.

so sad

by Anonymousreply 26August 24, 2022 2:41 AM

Now even the very best of Can You Read My Mind-covers is gonna sound opportunistic and will cancel itself on takeoff.....

I'm gonna always keep Different Worlds as a warm memory of junior high fantasy love that in hindsight reveals I missed clues about the dude I was crushing on.....

by Anonymousreply 27August 24, 2022 2:57 AM

and meh, lingering has to be tough and all, but there are gonna be a slew of dead rock stars soon and that's where our energy needs to be not-mehing

by Anonymousreply 28August 24, 2022 2:59 AM

Frank Rich gave her a sort of undermining absolute rave for Pirates of Penzance. He called her a "real find for the musical theater," with "real authority," a "knockout voice" capable of "stopping the show"...

Then called her too old for the part, when she's actually three years younger than Linda Ronstadt.

That's a good reminder, R29. Frank Rich could be a smart and occasionally insightful critic back in the day....

But a lot of the time, he could also be a smarmy, sexist dick. And he's never been called out on his behavior like a lot of other journalists have. Not once.

by Anonymousreply 30August 24, 2022 5:29 AM

She's someone I wish I could've seen live but didn't realize until it was too late.

Looking for tickets to Karen Akers' show now ...

by Anonymousreply 31August 24, 2022 7:16 AM

Maureen's version of "Evening Prayers" from Carrie, at the start of this video.

Haunting and beautiful.

She had an amazing Broadway role in her that never came.

When I heard "The Morning After," thought Maureen with British.

by Anonymousreply 35September 20, 2022 10:40 PM

R18, my heart goes out to you....sending positive energy and thoughts your way!

My mother had Alzheimer's for several years but seemed to plateau where she was still affected but knew her family and could have very basic conversations. I know there is medication to slow the progress so have faith that will put you in the best position possible.

I do question though, how were you diagnosed? Some of us also might be interested in a test so we can plan accordingly...

by Anonymousreply 36September 20, 2022 11:05 PM

Maureen confessed to be a devoted Barbra Streisand (singing) fan as a youngster.

by Anonymousreply 37September 20, 2022 11:38 PM

R34, I thought you were pranking us so I went to IMDB and you’re right! She was the nun—I never knew. Great scene!

by Anonymousreply 38September 20, 2022 11:44 PM

Donna Pescow wasn't the only star of Angie R12!

by Anonymousreply 39September 20, 2022 11:51 PM

Hopefully she won't recover memories of this song from a godawful film!

Some of her greatest albums. Just a gorgeous voice, and a great interpreter of lyrics. She could sing anything. Truly underrated and underappreciated.

If you only have time for or the inclination to listen to one album, start with 'Another Woman in Love.'

1979: Maureen McGovern 1987: Another Woman in Love 1988: State of the Heart 1992: Baby I'm Yours 1996: Out of This World 1997: The Music Never Ends

When I first moved to NYC as a teenager, I worked at Tower Records at Lincoln Center and was stationed downstairs in the "Soundtracks/Vocals" section, which was both the best and worst place in the store to work. Best because no one gave a shit about us and we pretty much could do whatever we wanted (with one exception, see following) and worst because we shared the floor with classical and they got to play two selections to our one. So they would put on three hour operas, and if we were lucky, we'd get Jennifer Warnes' Greatest Hits. (We were also not allowed to play anything considered "too rock" because it upset the classical customers.)

We had a little announcement board behind our registers where we'd post up new releases and (this was back in the late 80s) because I was bored, I would put up shit like "Joan Jett Sings Sondheim" or "Ann B. Davis in Sweet Charity OCR" just to fuck with the old queens who would come in because I HATED show tunes at that point. One day, I xeroxed a page from the Billboard Book of #1 Hits that was about Maureen McGovern and The Morning After and put it up on the board with some message that I cannot remember. A few days later, I'm ringing someone's purchase and I look up and Maureen is standing in front of me, glaring at the message board. The next thing I know, the store manager is in our section and down comes the message board (and any vestige of fun to be had in that dreary basement).

I've never been able to listen to "Different Worlds" the same way again.

I heard MMc on NPR's "Castaways' Choice" in the 1980s. She had excellent general taste in music, not just the music she sang. She is a native of Northeast Ohio and did a revised version of "The Morning After" for the local gas company.

by Anonymousreply 48September 21, 2022 3:10 PM

I adore the Another Woman in Love album. Completely perfect.

by Anonymousreply 49September 21, 2022 3:23 PM
