Court: DOJ under Barr wrongly withheld parts of a Russia probe memo

Key details

• Less than 48 hours after receiving Mueller’s 448-page report, Barr released a summary exonerating Trump on collusion and saying there was “insufficient evidence” of obstruction.

• Barr, under oath before Congress, admits that neither he nor Rosenstein reviewed the underlying evidence of obstruction before deciding there was not enough evidence.

• Mueller contacted Barr three times in the four days following Barr’s summary, memorializing two of those communications in written form. The level of urgency indicates this is not a minor disagreement.

• Barr, under oath before Congress, twice denied knowing Mueller’s thinking on the subject.

"Court: DOJ under Barr wrongly withheld parts of a Russia probe memo"

No Shit !!!!!

by Anonymousreply 2August 20, 2022 10:29 PM

Yeah, no shit but now there's a ruling. Which is new.

by Anonymousreply 3August 20, 2022 10:31 PM

Barr sheltered a criminal who obstructed justice.

Sounds like HE obstructed justice.

by Anonymousreply 4August 20, 2022 10:34 PM

Release it all!

by Anonymousreply 5August 20, 2022 10:37 PM

So are we saying that Russia did actually influence the election?

by Anonymousreply 6August 20, 2022 10:45 PM

Yes, r6. Aside from Mueller, numerous security and intelligence groups have concluded there was undeniable evidence of Russian meddling.

[quote] So are we saying that Russia did actually influence the election?

Russia's interference was confirmed along time ago. This is about Trump and the role that he played.

by Anonymousreply 8August 20, 2022 10:52 PM

BUT HER EMAILLLLLLLLLLSSSSSSS!!!

by Anonymousreply 9August 20, 2022 10:54 PM

Barr always believes the executive branch has unlimited power; as long as it's a Republican. He had a partial change of heart after he saw Trump was determined to overturn a fair election regardless of the means.

by Anonymousreply 10August 20, 2022 10:55 PM

The Unitary Executive theory only applies to the GQP. Not to Joe Biden or Barack Obama. This is why they are so full of shit their eyeballs are brown.

by Anonymousreply 11August 20, 2022 10:56 PM

These secretive DOJ memos that have just about the force of law make my blood boil, there was a special episode about them on The Good Fight. Well, a season-long arc, really, but only one episode contained a cartoon that explained what they were.

In 2014, Manafort’s plum assignment in Ukraine came to an abrupt end. In February of that year, Yanukovych was deposed in Ukraine’s second uprising in a decade, known as the Maidan Revolution, in which more than a hundred protesters were killed in Kyiv. He fled to Russia, leaving behind a vast, opulent estate (now a museum) with gold-plated bathroom fixtures, a galleon on a lake and a 100-car garage.

With big bills and no more big checks coming in, Manafort soon found himself deep in debt, including to a Russian oligarch. He eventually pitched himself for a new gig in American politics as a convention manager, wrangling delegates for an iconoclastic reality-TV star and real estate developer.

“I am not looking for a paid job,” he wrote to the Trump campaign in early 2016. Manafort was hired that spring, working for free.

r13, continued:

Senate investigators wrote in their report that they suspected Kilimnik served as “a channel for coordination” on the Russian military intelligence operation to hack into Democratic emails and leak them.

The Senate intel report notes that in about a dozen interviews with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Manafort “lied consistently” about “one issue in particular: his interactions with Kilimnik.”

Once again, our dear lord and savior, Donald J. Trump, is being persecuted by the atheistic, communist far left press.

When will his misery end?

This thread has much more information on GOP and the religious right involvement in Ukraine, in partnership with Russia, to fight against LGBT rights.

The goal of Putin was to prevent Ukraine from being admitted to the EU, The religious right was, of course, furthering their mission of hate and speeding up armageddon. The GOP is working to further both goals, depending upon their level of kompromat and/or religious fervor.

Religion my ass the evangelicals are a political party.

by Anonymousreply 20August 20, 2022 11:39 PM

What all of this means is:

If the MAGAt GOP is able to regain control of Congress and later, the Presidency, all aid to Ukraine will stop.

The U.S. will work with Russia. This may be subtle at first but eventually, the partnership will be official. You may recall the lies about "nazis" in Ukraine.

Russia, with aid from the U.S., will continue working to retake the land it believes is rightfully owed. "The Foundations of Geopolitics" is a good primer on their goals.

The billionaire-backed religious right will continue imposing their brand of christian nationalism, not only in the U.S., but across Ukraine and beyond.

This is not some outlandish scenario. The evidence is overwhelming and grows nearly every day now.

Vote and mobilize your community!

by Anonymousreply 21August 20, 2022 11:47 PM

Yes, r20, we all know that. It's explicitly stated in the linked DL thread.

Manafort didn’t make it to Election Day on the Trump campaign. In August 2016, The New York Times revealed that handwritten ledgers recovered from Yanukovych’s estate showed nearly $13 million in previously undisclosed payments to Manafort from Yanukovych and his pro-Russian party. Manafort was pushed out of his job as Trump’s campaign chairman less than a week later.

After Trump won the election, the Senate report says, Manafort and Kilimnik worked together on a proposed “plan” for Ukraine that would create an Autonomous Republic of Donbas in separatist-run southeast Ukraine, on the Russian border. Manafort went so far as to work with a pollster on a survey on public attitudes to Yanukovych, the deposed president. The plan only would need a “wink” from the new U.S. president, Kilimnik wrote to Manafort in an email.

Manafort continued to work on the “plan” even after he had been indicted on charges of bank fraud and conspiracy, according to the Senate report. It’s not clear what became of the effort, if anything.

With Manafort’s conviction in 2018, Rudy Giuliani came to the fore as the most Ukraine-connected person close to President Trump. Giuliani had long jetted around Eastern Europe. He’d hung out in Kyiv, supporting former professional boxer Vitali Klitschko’s run for mayor. One of Giuliani’s clients for his law firm happened to be Russia’s state oil producer, Rosneft.

By 2018, Giuliani had joined Trump’s legal team, leading the public effort to discredit Robert Mueller’s investigation. Giuliani saw that Ukraine could be a key to that effort.

Bill is truly an ugly brute a political pawn as well as a slime. But Israel sends delegations to congress to openly influence US policy towards all sorts of things. Talk about political influence and they do it openly and nobody even says anything or even brings it up. Plus the good ole, USA influences other countries election all the time including Ukraines. So what the hell is all this about.

by Anonymousreply 35August 21, 2022 6:54 AM

Whatabout bothsiderism? Amirite I right R35?

by Anonymousreply 36August 21, 2022 11:27 AM

Yes, let’s not forget about Barr. He needs to go right to jail as well right along with the rest of Trump’s criminal gang.

by Anonymousreply 37August 21, 2022 11:40 AM

Of course—the very fact that Barr said Mueller found no wrongdoing when Mueller actually did find wrong doing shows Barr was being political to help Trump and the GOP

by Anonymousreply 38August 21, 2022 11:42 AM

Bill Barr also helped with the coverups with Iran Contra. It's what he does, he's a cleaner. He was smart enough to get out this time just before the insurrection.

by Anonymousreply 39August 21, 2022 9:42 PM

All of these old, corrupt, anti-American, traitors need to finally face consequences. While they've all had long, privileged lives, we're going to be dealing with the repercussions for a century. It's maddening.

by Anonymousreply 40August 21, 2022 11:05 PM

R36 I'm just using Israel and Ukraine as examples i don't know if you are aware of that the USA was actively meddling in Ukraine's elections or that Israel meddles in ours here in the USA but those are just examples to illustrate my point. What I am saying is the U.S. is all for political influence and election meddling, as a policy when the USA does it. Their is no media stir in that scenario..Just pointing it out so you can notice it in the future.

by Anonymousreply 41August 22, 2022 12:47 PM

The U.S. Republicans meddling in Ukraine politics (on behalf of Russia) is covered at r18 and is well known, r41. Most posters are focused on the GOP/Kremlin ties because the former president tried to overthrow our government on behalf of an enemy nation. These same parties set out to prevent Ukraine from strengthening ties to the rest of Europe/EU. The only reason to focus on past U.S. involvement with other nations is to divert attention from the current domestic crisis and war in Ukraine.

Speaking of Ukraine, trump, and russia:

Now We Finally Know: Notorious Kremlin-Linked Oligarch Paid For Giuliani’s Trips

Rudy Giuliani had his travel expenses covered by an indicted Ukrainian oligarch’s company as he sought dirt on President Biden, the New York Times reported this week.

It’s a bombshell that requires us to think back, before the election overthrow attempt, before two impeachments, to 2019, when Giuliani was gallivanting around former Soviet states seeking ways to smear Trump’s likely opponent.

The revelation of who was paying his bills would have been shocking — if not entirely surprising — at the time. It remains shocking today. But, if anything, much of the coverage of it is understated.

The point isn’t only that Giuliani’s paymaster is under federal indictment. Rather, it’s who the oligarch — Dmytro Firtash — is.

The Times reported that Firtash’s firm paid thousands of dollars for Giuliani’s travel in summer 2019, including for a stay at the Ritz London and for private flights.

Giuliani and Firtash have issued similar responses to the Times’ report: Giuliani, via an attorney, claims that the former mayor had “no idea” the oligarch was funding the trips. A Firtash representative told the Times that the oligarch was unaware, too, claiming the payments were due to an “inadvertent error” and that Firtash did not authorize the transactions.

The implication of the cash flows, as the New Republic noted, is that a pro-Kremlin oligarch paid for Giuliani’s efforts to dig up dirt on former President Trump’s political opponent at the time: Joe Biden.

A close look at Firtash and allegations around his past connections and dealings sheds more light on who financed Giuliani’s summer 2019 activities. [continued at link]

And to add to the Manafort grift discussion mentioned upthread/ r26, we have this news from August 8, 2022:

Exclusive: Paul Manafort admits he passed Trump campaign data to a suspected Russian asset

In an interview with Insider, Paul Manafort, who served as Donald Trump's campaign chairman, made his first public admission that in 2016 he shared polling data from the Trump campaign with Konstantin Kilimnik, a longtime business associate with suspected ties to Russian intelligence.

Kilimnik then passed the data on to Russian spies, according to the US Treasury Department, which has characterized the data as "sensitive information on polling and campaign strategy."

**Manafort's acknowledgment contradicts his earlier denials, during the investigation into election interference conducted by the special counsel Robert Mueller, that he had anything to do with the transfer of sensitive campaign data.** It also differs from the account he gives in his forthcoming memoir, "Political Prisoner," in which he concedes only that he presented Kilimnik with "talking points" on polling data that was already public.

by Anonymousreply 45August 22, 2022 5:53 PM

The Ghouliani/Oligarch article was published August 5, Manafort/Spy on August 8, then we have the Barr ruling on August 20. All of these actions have been denied for years.

by Anonymousreply 46August 22, 2022 5:57 PM

Did you see the third release in February 2022, r45?

"The new version of the report on Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election also said that Mueller declined, citing insufficient evidence, to charge the political operative Roger Stone with crimes related to the hacking of Democratic National Committee computers and email accounts. And the evidence Mueller's investigators collected “did not establish” that the Trump campaign’s then-director of national security, JD Gordon, was acting as an agent of Russia when he arranged for changes to the Republican platform "pertaining to assistance to Ukraine" during the 2016 convention. [...]

Today's release marks the third time BuzzFeed News has forced the Justice Department to unredact portions of the 448-page report."

That's the last update on buzzfeed and it should be noted that the investigative journalism division was severely downsized in March, after buzzfeed went public in December. Not a moneymaker, according to the CEO, if I recall correctly. 🙄

And now, today, we get confirmation that Bannon and the Gateway Pundit's Jim Hoft are signaling magat media to start priming the base with "Dems are going to cheat in November."

On August 8, The Nation published "Steve Bannon’s Endgame": He's "plotting a “precinct strategy” takeover of the electoral infrastructure of the nation—by inserting MAGA supporters in key election oversight positions and by creating chaos where necessary—to ensure Republicans get control of Congress and statehouses in 2022 and of the White House in 2024. From there, the plan is for a re-empowered Trump to assert his authority as never before." archive.ph/ZuYOB

We already know that magats have taken over many election roles, which makes this **much more dangerous than 2016 and 2020.** Fucker C will probably start in with the fox watchers tonight and then it'll be nonstop across maga media until Nov.

They are confident this will work, which is why they're getting loose-lipped now. They truly believe they'll just do whatever they want after the election.

Steve Bannon and Jim Hoft claim that Democrats are planning to steal the midterm elections

Citation From the August 20, 2022, edition of Real America's Voice's War Room: Pandemic

STEVE BANNON (HOST)BANNON: They talk about elections being in the future. The future is now –

JIM HOFT (FOUNDER, THE GATEWAY PUNDIT): Absolutely.

BANNON: We’re in the moment, and this is why it’s so important. Here’s what’s going to happen. Today, you’re having a summary of how we got here, and then you go do state by state, and then tomorrow, we’re going to have the trial of machines, but most importantly, the call to action. This is about November 8th and not allowing it to happen again.

JIM HOFT: Absolutely, and you know, Steve, it’s a big tell from the Democrats, you know, we’re in a recession, we have an 8.6 percent inflation, and Nancy Pelosi and Democrats vote 100 percent on a $700 billion dollar spending bill that gives jobs to China, that gives job to Canada, that moves us to a green economy, that puts us out of work. They only do that because they’re not worried.

BANNON:They’re not worried.

HOFT: It’s a big tell to me that the fix is in, still.

BANNON: On November 8th.

HOFT: On November 8th.

BANNON: They’re so cocky right now and arrogant.

HOFT: They shove it in your face.

BANNON: You think they plan a big steal for November 8th?

JIM HOFT: I think – I don’t think they’re worried. That’s the tell, right? And their actions show that.
