Truman Capote spills the tea! Tom Hollander plays him in Ryan Murphys Feud directed by Gus Van Sant! Can't wait!!
This week, Deadline revealed the cast of the eight-episode mini-series, “Feud: Capote’s Women,” by executive producer Ryan Murphy and Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant. It’s set to air sometime next year. The story is an adaptation of Laurence Leamer’s book “Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era.”
An all-star cast will play the roles of Capote’s swans, including Naomi Watts (as fashion fantastic Babe Paley), Chloë Sevigny (as Boston Brahmin C.Z. Guest), Calista Flockhart (as Jackie Kennedy’s jealous sister Lee Radziwill) and Diane Lane (as jet setter Slim Keith). “Gosford Park” and “Pride and Prejudice” actor Tom Hollander is cast as Capote.

If Murphy wanted to be truly bitchy, he would just cast Toby Jones, the superior Capote, again.

Chloe Sevigny is ten million times wrong for C. Z. Guest. Sevigny is too “hard”. Did Kirsten Dunst turn the role down?

I really like Hollander as an actor. He's never afraid to underplay. It's too easy to push the caricature when doing Capote.

Fantastic! Read Capote’s Women recently. It’s very good. I’ve read a lot about Capote over the years and this book intros new info. Great idea for next Feud!

I’m interested to know how they will write C.Z. Guest because she was very neutral. She wasn’t as bitchy as the other women and I think at the end she was the only one still on speaking terms with Capote.
And I agree with R5. Toby Jones is the only actor who has been able to play Capote as a real human and not a cartoon character.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 21, 2022 1:50 PM

Aided by a good script, Toby Jones caught his playfulness and charm. Philip Seymour Hoffman was too leaden.

CZ Guest's part will definitely be the hardest to make interesting because she was sane and down-to-earth, and if it hadn't been for her money, rather dull.

When I first moved to NYC, I worked for an old queen who knew CZ Guest. She’d call him at the office and say, “This is Corny.” At the time (pre-internet) I had no idea who she was. I think I looked her up in the library and all I found was that she had written a book on gardening.

R15, I think it was the mother because when she left a message she would say, “Tell him C.Z. Guest called.” This was late 1980s I think and the guy would have been too old to hang with the daughter. He was in his 50s in the late 1980s.

True story: I follow the Warhol Museum page on TikTok and they have young, I guess hip, looking people, definitely high school maybe college doing videos. One guy did one on Capote and did not pronounce his name correctly. Many others and myself left comments saying it needed to be corrected. Nothing was done. This week a TikTok with the director popped up and I said in that video’s comments that it needed to be corrected using the proper pronunciation of his name, as it’s not a good look for the museum. When I looked yesterday both videos were gone. I expect there will be some level of oversight on future videos.

R17, which is just sheer laziness because in 3 seconds that person can find dozens of videos where his name is pronounced correctly.

Question: Why was Babe Paley perceived as "all that?" An icon both for her personal style and for her beauty? I do not get it from looking at pictures of her. Yes, she was wealthy. Yes her father was a prominent physician. Yes, she probably had good manners. Yes, she was married to ultra-wealthy Bill Paley during his salad years. Yes, she was slender and dressed well. Slim Keith, I get it: she was adventurous and witty and had the courage to wear eyeglasses. Marella Agnelli and Gloria Guinness had foreign mystique. Others have already commented on CZ. But I do not understand Babe's lionization. Any insights?

I grew up watching Truman Capote appear on talk shows and the like in the '70s; Hoffman just kind of swanned around in that film, he wasn't anything like Truman Capote.
Reminds me when Patti LuPone opened as Maria Callas in the West End - and the critics, who all had memories of Callas appearing at the opera house and on the BBC were like, "Who is this supposed to be??" It closed rather quickly. I think it was a combination of McNally's script AND the coarse performance.

Demi Moore is in talks to join the series. I’m thinking if this is going up to the end of his life, she must be playing Joanne Carson. She was quite thin and had a very oval face as well and was quite willowy.

I read the book the series will be based on, and it’s unfortunately not one of the the good new narrative nonfictions, woven together like a novel. Each chapter is basically an overview of each swan and exploration of his relationship with them, with some tie-ins and throwbacks to other women. Much of it also reads like a travel diary as he would run off to spend time with each one in a different locale. It’ll be interesting to see how they pull that off, especially all the European locations.
I then decided to read The Swans of Fifth Avenue and after a few chapters in I DNF the book as it was all repeat of what I read in the nonfiction book, but novelized, and not salaciously enough to make it much different. I think it’s a case of read either one or the other depending on where your preferences lie. I unexpectedly read another novel by this author and while she has literary aspirations, it’s mostly commercial fare dressed up .

I'm fascinated by tobacco heiress Doris Duke and her sad, nutty life. Murphy (or someone) should make a series about her life, the Bacall one was rubbish. It would need a series to tell it properly. Be hard to cast, she was skinny, 6 ft, and considerably ugly with a lantern jaw and had bad plastic surgery. Perhaps Nicole Kidman with a fake jaw. Maybe our Faye for old age Doris,

R80 I’ve read every book about her. Utterly paranoid—yet easily manipulated—but far less pathos than Barbara Hutton. One of my favorite (and brief) DD anecdotes was her loving a sale…and spotted standing on a long line at Macys (when she was in her 50s and worth maybe $800M) to buy a sale bathrobe.
The one who came out on top was Chandi Heffner…who managed to convince Doris she was the reincarnation of her only child—Arden—who died in infancy. Chandi managed to get adopted by Doris and eventually got $65 million.

R19 Babe Paley was relevant more for the fact she existed as an intersection point between the different cultural spheres for decades. Less about beauty and more influence: politics, society, culture, and what was then the demimonde - or at least the semi-polite edges of it.
