Truman Capote spills the tea! Tom Hollander plays him in Ryan Murphys Feud directed by Gus Van Sant! Can't wait!!

This week, Deadline revealed the cast of the eight-episode mini-series, “Feud: Capote’s Women,” by executive producer Ryan Murphy and Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant. It’s set to air sometime next year. The story is an adaptation of Laurence Leamer’s book “Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era.”

An all-star cast will play the roles of Capote’s swans, including Naomi Watts (as fashion fantastic Babe Paley), Chloë Sevigny (as Boston Brahmin C.Z. Guest), Calista Flockhart (as Jackie Kennedy’s jealous sister Lee Radziwill) and Diane Lane (as jet setter Slim Keith). “Gosford Park” and “Pride and Prejudice” actor Tom Hollander is cast as Capote.

Unlike Lee, Calista is pretty and can act.

by Anonymousreply 1August 19, 2022 11:11 PM

Here for this! Thanks for the tip off OP! But Chloë Sevigny....jeez.

This is the most perfect show for gays of a certain age, ever. I can’t wait.

by Anonymousreply 3August 21, 2022 1:33 PM

I don't like Flockhart or Sevigny's casting, but I'm always happy to see Diane Lane.

by Anonymousreply 4August 21, 2022 1:35 PM

If Murphy wanted to be truly bitchy, he would just cast Toby Jones, the superior Capote, again.

by Anonymousreply 5August 21, 2022 1:40 PM

Dear Ryan Murphy,

I know that you're pandering to me, but I'm writing to thank you for your efforts.

All Best,

by Anonymousreply 6August 21, 2022 1:44 PM

Chloe Sevigny is ten million times wrong for C. Z. Guest. Sevigny is too “hard”. Did Kirsten Dunst turn the role down?

by Anonymousreply 7August 21, 2022 1:44 PM

This will be good!

by Anonymousreply 8August 21, 2022 1:47 PM

I really like Hollander as an actor. He's never afraid to underplay. It's too easy to push the caricature when doing Capote.

by Anonymousreply 9August 21, 2022 1:48 PM

Fantastic! Read Capote’s Women recently. It’s very good. I’ve read a lot about Capote over the years and this book intros new info. Great idea for next Feud!

by Anonymousreply 10August 21, 2022 1:49 PM

I’m interested to know how they will write C.Z. Guest because she was very neutral. She wasn’t as bitchy as the other women and I think at the end she was the only one still on speaking terms with Capote.

And I agree with R5. Toby Jones is the only actor who has been able to play Capote as a real human and not a cartoon character.

by Anonymousreply 11August 21, 2022 1:50 PM

Aided by a good script, Toby Jones caught his playfulness and charm. Philip Seymour Hoffman was too leaden.

CZ Guest's part will definitely be the hardest to make interesting because she was sane and down-to-earth, and if it hadn't been for her money, rather dull.

by Anonymousreply 13August 21, 2022 2:05 PM

When I first moved to NYC, I worked for an old queen who knew CZ Guest. She’d call him at the office and say, “This is Corny.” At the time (pre-internet) I had no idea who she was. I think I looked her up in the library and all I found was that she had written a book on gardening.

by Anonymousreply 14August 21, 2022 2:21 PM

[Quote]This is Corny.

I thnk you're referring to CZ's daughter, Cornelia.

by Anonymousreply 15August 21, 2022 2:46 PM

R15, I think it was the mother because when she left a message she would say, “Tell him C.Z. Guest called.” This was late 1980s I think and the guy would have been too old to hang with the daughter. He was in his 50s in the late 1980s.

by Anonymousreply 16August 21, 2022 2:57 PM

True story: I follow the Warhol Museum page on TikTok and they have young, I guess hip, looking people, definitely high school maybe college doing videos. One guy did one on Capote and did not pronounce his name correctly. Many others and myself left comments saying it needed to be corrected. Nothing was done. This week a TikTok with the director popped up and I said in that video’s comments that it needed to be corrected using the proper pronunciation of his name, as it’s not a good look for the museum. When I looked yesterday both videos were gone. I expect there will be some level of oversight on future videos.

R17, which is just sheer laziness because in 3 seconds that person can find dozens of videos where his name is pronounced correctly.

Question: Why was Babe Paley perceived as "all that?" An icon both for her personal style and for her beauty? I do not get it from looking at pictures of her. Yes, she was wealthy. Yes her father was a prominent physician. Yes, she probably had good manners. Yes, she was married to ultra-wealthy Bill Paley during his salad years. Yes, she was slender and dressed well. Slim Keith, I get it: she was adventurous and witty and had the courage to wear eyeglasses. Marella Agnelli and Gloria Guinness had foreign mystique. Others have already commented on CZ. But I do not understand Babe's lionization. Any insights?

by Anonymousreply 19August 21, 2022 3:15 PM

r17 What a fascinating story, you should write a book

Oh, *do* fuck off, you sad little man.

by Anonymousreply 21August 21, 2022 3:52 PM

I grew up watching Truman Capote appear on talk shows and the like in the '70s; Hoffman just kind of swanned around in that film, he wasn't anything like Truman Capote.

Reminds me when Patti LuPone opened as Maria Callas in the West End - and the critics, who all had memories of Callas appearing at the opera house and on the BBC were like, "Who is this supposed to be??" It closed rather quickly. I think it was a combination of McNally's script AND the coarse performance.

by Anonymousreply 22August 21, 2022 4:22 PM

Demi Moore is in talks to join the series. I’m thinking if this is going up to the end of his life, she must be playing Joanne Carson. She was quite thin and had a very oval face as well and was quite willowy.

Saffy's fiance?

by Anonymousreply 28September 18, 2022 4:56 AM

Awkward title. Is 'feuding' going to be a sort of franchise? Joan vs. Olivia? Meghan vs. Kate?

[Quote] Joan vs. Olivia? Meghan vs. Kate?

Zac Efron vs. fountain?

by Anonymousreply 30September 18, 2022 5:06 AM

This has the potential to be a very entertaining series. The question though will Murphy yet again go so far offtrack ( like the Rock Hudson movie ) that he totally ruins it.

by Anonymousreply 31September 18, 2022 5:08 AM

R31 You know since Van Sant is the director of all episodes, don’t quite know how they are going to pull that off, I think he will be good at keeping it tight, his storytelling abilities are very strong and I think he’ll do a great job.

by Anonymousreply 32September 18, 2022 5:17 AM

Answered Prayers was such dreck.

by Anonymousreply 33September 18, 2022 5:33 AM

R26 My Tom is creamy, don't know about the asparagus.

by Anonymousreply 34September 18, 2022 6:04 AM

I wonder if Gore Vidal will be a character in the series, and if so, who will play him. We know those two legendary eldergays loathed each other.

by Anonymousreply 42October 30, 2022 5:18 AM

I read the book the series will be based on, and it’s unfortunately not one of the the good new narrative nonfictions, woven together like a novel. Each chapter is basically an overview of each swan and exploration of his relationship with them, with some tie-ins and throwbacks to other women. Much of it also reads like a travel diary as he would run off to spend time with each one in a different locale. It’ll be interesting to see how they pull that off, especially all the European locations.

I then decided to read The Swans of Fifth Avenue and after a few chapters in I DNF the book as it was all repeat of what I read in the nonfiction book, but novelized, and not salaciously enough to make it much different. I think it’s a case of read either one or the other depending on where your preferences lie. I unexpectedly read another novel by this author and while she has literary aspirations, it’s mostly commercial fare dressed up .

by Anonymousreply 43October 30, 2022 6:15 AM

Moore will play Ann Woodward, the woman who committed suicide when the first chapter of Answered Prayers was published in Esquire.

Interesting.

by Anonymousreply 44October 30, 2022 6:23 AM

These actresses are all cast for the maximum amount of irritation. "Oh yes let's have Demi Moore together with Chloe Sevigny". Irritation and it's all so fucking Van Sant hip, the lot of them together.

by Anonymousreply 45October 30, 2022 6:33 AM

This DL'er can't wait to see the fashion.

by Anonymousreply 46October 30, 2022 7:00 AM

Can't stand Tom Hollander, pretentious little dickhead

by Anonymousreply 47October 30, 2022 8:00 AM

Will they include Lee calling Capote and Vidal a couple of fags?

by Anonymousreply 48October 30, 2022 8:10 AM

I find it hard to believe Lee and Capote were real friends, he seems like the type of man Lee would mock.

by Anonymousreply 49October 30, 2022 8:11 AM

Is Harper Lee not in this? Surely Catherine Zeta Jones would be perfect to follow in the footsteps of Catherine Keener and Sandra Bollocks.

by Anonymousreply 50October 30, 2022 8:13 AM

Watching for Demi Moore and Naomi Watts.

by Anonymousreply 51October 30, 2022 8:13 AM

I cast Rose Byrne as Lee Radziwill

by Anonymousreply 52October 30, 2022 8:15 AM

I had no idea that Tom Hollander was so short. He’s only a few inches taller than Capote.

by Anonymousreply 53October 30, 2022 11:29 PM

R53 So is Yoda.

by Anonymousreply 54October 31, 2022 11:57 AM

Bette and Joan also ran for eight episodes, it should have been six, max. At least with this show we have people everyone has heard of and can relate too....

by Anonymousreply 55October 31, 2022 3:09 PM

Well, I love Tom Hollander and his name is what most excites me about the project. I think he's perfect casting.

And I'm another eldergay who doesn't get what the fuss about Babe Paley was all about. Certainly no charisma and only a rather limited beauty comes across in photos.

by Anonymousreply 56October 31, 2022 3:21 PM

I don't think Hollander has the talent to play Capote, but we will see.

by Anonymousreply 57October 31, 2022 3:25 PM

I think it’s very easy to imitate Capote, the challenge will be to act the role and give depth and nuance, especially as such an unsympathetic character and make us care about him.

by Anonymousreply 58October 31, 2022 3:30 PM

Chloë Sevigny!

by Anonymousreply 59October 31, 2022 3:34 PM

I met Princess Lee Radziwill in New York once and she mentioned that Truman Capote and Gore Vidal were "just a couple of fags". I couldn't believe she used that f-word. Where I come from we say "faggot" which is more respectful.

by Anonymousreply 60October 31, 2022 11:45 PM

Walter Matthau's wife was one of the swans. She came from New York money and ran with those ladies.

Tom Hollander ??? is it 1997 again ??

by Anonymousreply 62November 1, 2022 1:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 63November 1, 2022 1:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 64November 1, 2022 1:46 AM

[quote] Tom Hollander's ass when he was younger. Has he ever shown it?

he might have actually, it stirs vague memories of a firm little fuzzy peach

by Anonymousreply 65November 1, 2022 1:47 AM

Who the fuck is Tom Hollander? He's probably British.

by Anonymousreply 66November 1, 2022 1:55 AM

R66 Tom is one of the most talented actors ever. He also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout his life. Despite that, he has a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Hollywood. At a time when gay people were oppressed beyond belief, they identified with his struggles and he theirs.

by Anonymousreply 67November 1, 2022 2:02 AM

Is he gay?

by Anonymousreply 68November 1, 2022 2:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 70November 1, 2022 2:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 72November 1, 2022 2:12 AM

What about Gloria Vanderbilt & Carol Saroyan? An entire chapter of Answered Prayers included their lunch together. Plus, of course, Carol was one of Tru’s inspirations for Holly Golightly.

by Anonymousreply 73November 1, 2022 2:38 AM

That’s why he got cast.

by Anonymousreply 74November 1, 2022 6:04 AM

I'm fascinated by tobacco heiress Doris Duke and her sad, nutty life. Murphy (or someone) should make a series about her life, the Bacall one was rubbish. It would need a series to tell it properly. Be hard to cast, she was skinny, 6 ft, and considerably ugly with a lantern jaw and had bad plastic surgery. Perhaps Nicole Kidman with a fake jaw. Maybe our Faye for old age Doris,

R80 I’ve read every book about her. Utterly paranoid—yet easily manipulated—but far less pathos than Barbara Hutton. One of my favorite (and brief) DD anecdotes was her loving a sale…and spotted standing on a long line at Macys (when she was in her 50s and worth maybe $800M) to buy a sale bathrobe.

The one who came out on top was Chandi Heffner…who managed to convince Doris she was the reincarnation of her only child—Arden—who died in infancy. Chandi managed to get adopted by Doris and eventually got $65 million.

R82, is there one definitive book or article about DD? I don’t know that much about her but really don’t have the time to do a deep dive.

by Anonymousreply 83November 6, 2022 1:01 PM

Meghan Markle would be perfect as Chandi Hefner!

by Anonymousreply 84November 6, 2022 1:02 PM

Good heavens.

by Anonymousreply 85November 6, 2022 1:03 PM

Faye would be perfect...face distorted from plastic surgery, thinning old lady cotton candy hair, and she's just as batshit as DD.

by Anonymousreply 86November 6, 2022 1:04 PM

CZ's nude done by Diego Rivera is difficult to find in photo form.

Paulette G's portrait was not in THE. She was a lady.

James Corden as Benard Lafferty, he's fat and gay

R19 Babe Paley was relevant more for the fact she existed as an intersection point between the different cultural spheres for decades. Less about beauty and more influence: politics, society, culture, and what was then the demimonde - or at least the semi-polite edges of it.
