Who gives a fuck what IndieWire has to say on the subject.

Hacks and twats and little egos eager for attention and clicks.

And it's a shit list, of course.

by Anonymousreply 1August 19, 2022 6:18 PM

Billy Zane in Titanic? There's a lot to object to here, of course, but this one threw me. I barely remember his performance at all, although it's been a while since I watched Titanic. Is there something I'm missing?

by Anonymousreply 2August 19, 2022 6:20 PM

I always thought Billy Zane was mocked for his performance in Titanic.

by Anonymousreply 3August 19, 2022 6:23 PM

Rei Hance? I had to look it up. She was Heather Donohue when the movie came out.

by Anonymousreply 4August 19, 2022 6:23 PM

Julianne Moore. Seriously.

by Anonymousreply 5August 19, 2022 6:24 PM

R2 there is nothing forgettable about that performance. He was over the top in every way. Some people loved it but many mocked it at the time. In 2022 I think many like it though, as campy over the top acting is more appreciated now than it was 20+ years ago.

You must have not even watched the movie.

by Anonymousreply 6August 19, 2022 6:28 PM

And I laughed and I laughed .

by Anonymousreply 7August 19, 2022 6:28 PM

Tom Cruise was much better, or at least more effective, in Magnolia than he was in Jerry Maguire.
Who gives a fuck what IndieWire has to say on the subject

OP from Brooklyn is always posting Indiewire links.

by Anonymousreply 9August 19, 2022 6:33 PM

Jerry Maguire is an iconic 90s film. Tom was great. But I think of Cuba Gooding Jr. when I think of that movie more than I do Tom despite him being the title character

by Anonymousreply 10August 19, 2022 6:35 PM

Putting Tony Chiu-Wai Leung's performance in Happy Together in the same league as Billy Zane in Titanic is [bold]beyond[/bold] idiotic and laughable.

by Anonymousreply 11August 19, 2022 6:38 PM

Its an OK List but random choice of movies. There were likely 100K watchable movies made in the 90s, no? So they throw in one random French film an all the rest are English language?

Journalism is DEAD. It's just a bunch of hacks trying to scrape together some meagre living posting blog-like texts.

by Anonymousreply 12August 19, 2022 6:42 PM

Clickbait article that throws in random shit to stir the pot.

JLo was lifetime movie good in Selena, not Oscar worthy

by Anonymousreply 13August 19, 2022 6:44 PM

Billy Zane did a good job in Titanic, you could feel his pain at losing Rose despite being an abusive phuck.

by Anonymousreply 14August 19, 2022 6:50 PM

Cal Hockley wasn’t hurt that he lost Rose because he loved her r14

by Anonymousreply 15August 19, 2022 6:52 PM

It's a shame no one on DL has firm opinions about anything.

by Anonymousreply 16August 19, 2022 6:53 PM

No Tom Hanks for Forrest Gump?

by Anonymousreply 17August 19, 2022 6:57 PM

Jlo's best performance was in Out of Sight. A throwback to the movies of the 40s.

by Anonymousreply 18August 19, 2022 7:10 PM

R6 It has been a long time, and I was mostly focused on Kate Winslet's cleavage. Maybe I'll rewatch

by Anonymousreply 19August 19, 2022 7:13 PM
"Ray Liotta as Henry Hill in “Goodfellas” (1990)"

No relation.

by Anonymousreply 20August 19, 2022 7:19 PM

Who'd she fuck to get on that list?

by Anonymousreply 21August 19, 2022 7:20 PM
Tom Cruise was much better, or at least more effective, in Magnolia than he was in Jerry Maguire.

So tiresome seeing Cruise get credit for his performance in Magnolia. All I could see was "Tom Cruise ACTING"....

by Anonymousreply 22August 19, 2022 8:02 PM

Jlo should not be near any list for acting ability; the exception being before the paparazzi.

by Anonymousreply 23August 19, 2022 8:26 PM

R22 that was the whole point, Cruise didn’t realize that Paul Thomas Anderson was trolling him by casting him role.

by Anonymousreply 24August 19, 2022 8:45 PM

R22, I hate this type of revisionism where critics decide that just because an actor known for giving bad performances has stuck around for decades, that means we have to reimagine them as actually talented actors. Yes, Keanu is a nice guy and he's not doing bad accents anymore, but he's still a really limited performer, no matter what the New York Times says.

And now it's J. Lo. She was good in Selena, and also Out of Sight and Hustlers. But none of those were great performances just because they rise above the level of what she usually does, and because people in the media want to be nice to her now that the second round of Bennifer is considered a heartwarming love story instead of a tabloid nightmare.

(You see the flip side of this, too, with actually talented actors who are now widely loathed. You want to take chances, IndieWire? Forget putting Billy Zane on your list, put a Kevin Spacey performance there. That would take guts!)

by Anonymousreply 25August 19, 2022 8:48 PM

Good god, Heather Donahue???? There's a reason she stopped acting- she was terrible at it.

by Anonymousreply 26August 19, 2022 8:50 PM

R25 God you’re stupid. Modern critics are giving their critique of past films. They clearly like J Lo as an actress. They’re not saying she was considered great in 1997. They’re saying in 2022 she was great looking back.

by Anonymousreply 27August 19, 2022 8:52 PM

Except that she was never great. Never.

by Anonymousreply 28August 19, 2022 8:54 PM

R28 according to you. That is your opinion. Clearly the people at IndieWire do not agree with you.

by Anonymousreply 29August 19, 2022 8:57 PM

What is wrong with you, R27? If you're going to be a loathsome cunt, you should at least give a coherent argument, which you seem incapable of doing.

My whole post was about critical revisionism of actors, and your criticism of my post was "They're not saying she was great in 1997. They're saying in 2022 she was great looking back." Well, duh, that's what revisionism is, you cretin.

Don't call other people stupid if you can't even understand what words mean.

by Anonymousreply 30August 19, 2022 9:08 PM

R29 Indiwire can suck my dick! She was never great according to GOD. The UNIVERSE.

by Anonymousreply 31August 19, 2022 9:38 PM

I'm glad they credited Melanie Lynskey for "Heavenly Creatures." That was a fantastically real performance--but because Kate Winslet was also good, and is so beautiful (and no one had seen her before), she got all the attention.
