So I'm a late 80s millennial in my early 30s but man it just seems like things have changed SO dramatically so quickly, it almost feels like it happened overnight. The gays I grew up with could take a joke and dish out jokes in return. They used to be able to detect sarcasm (which I thought was a natural gay trait) and be able to dish out some funny quips in return. Now, Younger guys it seems require eggshells for you to walk on in order to hang out with them lest they start crying and throwing the latest Twitter buzzwords before they block you and isolate themselves for another 2 years. I'm not crying about "wokness" or different political opinions, I'm literally talking about being able to tell a funny story or joke and it's a lost art these days. Obviously I'm not talking about the fellas here on DL which is why I thought I'd bring my question here. Any experiences?
Does anybody else think gen z gays are just too sensitive?

NEW YORK -- The term "Googling" may be synonymous with "searching" for things online, but for the group known as Gen Z that might be changing.
Nearly 40% of Gen Z members (born from 1997 to 2012, according to the Pew Research Center) prefer TikTok for online searches, according to internal data from Google, which was first reported by TechCrunch.
"They don't have a long attention span; they said that several times," said Adrienne Sheares, a social media consultant, who formed a Gen Z focus group to discuss their searching habits. "They want to get the information really quickly, and get to the meat of it really quickly and not have to sort."

I don't know. They're not as sensitive as many Boomers who have absolutely no sense of humor or sense of joy.
Millennials are just as soft honestly especially women. Are we forgetting it was Millennials who started this SJW culture and everything is problematic culture now? Gen Z humor is dumb but they're young, most teens laugh at stupid shit. I'm a millennial and I find it comical how my generation is acting like it's all tough as if we didn't have the same amount of sensitive and self-important morons. MySpace was basically the TikTok of the day where everyone thought they were hot shit and unique..
The late 90s and 2000s humor was mean-spirited and lowbrow. It wasn't that funny in retrospect, "no homo" and "that's gay!" Really? People couldn't take it honestly, everyone just made fun of easy targets like gay and minorities but cried when people insulted them back.
Gen X is funny though and most of the stuff we laughed at was from them.

Yep. Same. Once you hit over 25, you really start to have nothing in common with people in their teens and early 20s and they become irritating to be around. That's why people who are older who go to college, just take their classes and go straight home. For some reason, people on this site act like they weren't as dumb, sensitive and arrogant as adolescents too. Newsflash, you were and the older you get, the worse your memory is and you idealize your own youth. Just be grateful there was no TikTok back then. I know my millennial self is happy I deleted my original Facebook account during high school.

I think the media needs to stop idealizing adolescence. I'm sick of all these articles praising teens, all these movies and TV shows that make teenage life look so fun and the blatant lie "high school is the best years of your life." Teenagers are and always are the most dullest creatures on the planet. Children are blunt, funny and creative. Adults have the maturity and stability to live out their dreams and passions and they can care less what others think. Teenagers and college kids are insecure and a walking tornado of hormones who need to fit in, define themselves by labels and think they know everything. They are the least interesting people because they don't know who they are like children and older adults do.

GenZ has no desire to interact, much less talk, to anyone unless its through a screen in their hands. I learned that early and learned to no bother with them.
They aren't worth the time and agreed are huge Debbie Downers, with aspie tendencies.
Especially American ones whose workaholic GenZ or lazy entitled millenial parents raised them by dropping a phone jn their hands.
Foreign ones are better, if only because cell data is still expensive in many other places.
Haven't found myself attracted to anyone under 30 in a while and I'm not complaining about that.

They're tougher than you think about real world challenges (as opposed to unflattering words), R40. Our generations didn't grow up under the threat of having an active shooter mow down half our classmates once they snap. And we assumed (correctly) that growing up to be more successful than our parents was likely, rather than being faced with the choice between perpetually living in said parents' homes or renting with a half dozen of our closest friends to make ends meet.

Gen Z sees no point in interacting with anybody. It's literally like falling into a void to talk to any of them half the time. The long stares, the awkward silences, their obvious discomfort. I always say, it's ok, little camper. Go home and be with your Meme. One of them told me she doesn't have an attention span of more than five minutes and spends most of her time on Instagram. The pendulum swings back and forth. The early to mid 2000s were pretty sleazy, mean spirited and crass. Maybe the gen z ers are a little too sensitive but the era before was fairly bad. Just an ugly time. One thing I do find odd about the younger generation is their need to project sexual menace onto everything. It's very strange. Almost like a fetish. One example would be a few days ago there was a mini brouhaha about Jenna Bush getting too touchy with her male co host. He later explained that it was no big deal, he kept pushing her away because he wanted to be near the cute male chef. But some of the comments on twitter screaming about " consent" were acting like she molested him on live air rather than touch his shoulders. And yeah I realize Twitter is not always a reflection of real life but I've seen this strangeness before from some young people.

I mean I can't blame young girls for being puritanical. Yeah it's extreme but look at how oversexualized and borderline pornographic the 2000s was. People are looking back at Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Emma Watson and the Olsens and how sexualized they were as minors. And the misogynistic hip-hop, rock and country culture. I think it's a normal pendulum swing. America is still very immature around sexuality.

Exactly R3. People expecting me to use their chosen pronouns has caused me to change my entire socio political mindset.
I was pro choice but some twitter person had a "they/them" on their twitter profile so now I'm completely anti-abortion.
I used to be for strong social safety nets but I heard some character on TV refer to someone I perceived to be female as "him" and now I think we need to privatize Social Security and get rid of food stamps and any poverty based child/disabled aid.
I used to think pollution and climate change need to be actively dealt with but then I heard my young nephew say people's pronouns changing is no big deal so now I think climate change is a hoax and fossil fuel companies should be able to pollute to their shareholders content.
And, of course I now think all LGBTQ people are sub-human and deserve no rights let alone equal rights.
because pronouns and sensitivity drove me away from the Democratic party. I mean, it's only logical.

The boomers are pretty tough. They grew up free range and parents didn't generally want to see the kids until dinnertime, especially early boomers. If we were bullied, our parents would tell us to work it out ourselves. the grownups had their lives and the kids had theirs so to speak. We didn't have the internet for most of our lives. As kids, just Saturday for morning cartoons.

Black Boomers grew up during segregation and were victims of racial violence. The Black Panthers were Boomers. And they saw their communities be destroyed by the crack epidemic in the 1980s. They remained very stoic and religion helped them cope but mental health isn't nearly addressed as it should be. The privileged Boomer stereotype only applies to the white upper class who could become hippies turned yuppies. Not every single one.

R83 Yes. It's annoying how all these Gen Z talking heads are all just the same privileged upper middle-class kids who all eventually become conservative with age. by Anonymous | reply 84 | August 19, 2022 2:52 AM |
And a lot of those hippies were middle-class kids who were hippies for about a minute and then life or Vietnam got in the way. The middle-class kids went to college to avoid the draft but the poorer ones had to go to war. Most of us ended up middle class. Not rich CEOs. Only a few of us ended up that way and they were already the privileged. The thing is boomers had a lot of fun before we had to grow up. But we grew up faster than the kids today. We were expected to leave home as soon as we left college and were expected to have a job. If you didn't go to college, you were expected to leave home right after high school.

r75 boomers in youth sided with political extremes, far left to far right, most inevitably ended up as left of center or right of center. .. not about selling out but rather life experiences of losing people to drugs, war, violence... their movements largely won, thus the radical aspects lost momentum because people started having their own kids and stopped being surrogate parents to everyone else. They didn't sell out, they grew up.
Gen X was mainly split between concepts of socialism and libertarianism... they valued the concept of socialism on the small scale but generally side towards individual rights with the feds. So, on the simplistic political compass.. they tend to be centrists divided between authoritarianism and libertarianism.
Millennials, like boomers, tended to be more far right and far left... few tend to be close to center but they're getting closer in their old age. more of them tend to be authoritarians in believing in the need for a paternalistic govt to regulate everything. . .
Gen Z push the extremes in every direction but as childhood is now extended to 30 (thanks millennials) it may yet just be a phase.
silent gen just wants to retreat to tcm movies, kindle and sharing memes on fb. . . but overall, they tend to hold firm on left center and will flip on Doris Day saying Que Sera, Sera
greatest gen on life support tended to be right of center.
Gen Z... yes, we can blame largely X for raising these little monsters, which they paradoxically demand excellence from them while also raising them to disrespect everything....

by Anonymous | reply 97 | August 19, 2022 3:37 AM |
Gen Z ~ARE~ annoying
You would be too if you were born and raised in a sterile, postmodern America where children no longer have unplanned outside play. where public school quality has been decimated (this is why they all sound so vacant - they are.) where your online life is a valid and full as your "IRL" life.
School shootings, COVID-19, increasingly frequent financial crises, insane disparities between rich and poor, race riots, Trump...
Millennials, even if they reject it, at least had some exposure to a pre-9/11 America with a shared identity and robust public institutions. An era where everyone watched the same cable television shows, where there were more straightforward "black-and-white" issues of morality (should gay marriage be legal?). All millennials knew at least one family who went to church weekly, even if it wasn't theirs. There were reference points to which diverse parties could all relate.
Since they gained consciousness, Gen Z have seen plainly that the "American Dream" was a LIE, and they are responding to living in a world which is manifestly RANDOM and CRUEL.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | August 19, 2022 3:40 AM |
GenZ can leave America then.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | August 19, 2022 3:47 AM |
r98 Boomers are the O.G.'s on claiming the dream was a lie... albeit, the greatest gen also claimed that as they began breaking racial, sexual and gender barriers.
but every gen thinks they invented something their elders passed on... we could keep going back and back for all the worst of the worsts.
But the cringe is more fun, like all four of these gens that thought they were deep because they went through a suicidal ideation phase and read too much Sylvia Plath.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | August 19, 2022 3:50 AM |
The American dream was not a lie. Things change. There are too many people and too much competition for too few jobs. The rich stole the American dream. They sent good jobs overseas for cheap labor. The corporations became too powerful and wages stagnated thanks to the corporate bottom line and now they have become like locusts ravaging all the resources and destroying the climate while encouraging endless growth on a finite planet.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | August 19, 2022 3:51 AM |
all the lsd flashbacks of the boomers prepared the slackers for chemistry class while millennials became their guinea pigs because we didn't want to shock the monkey or apply eyeshadow to bunnies... which in turn, millennials passed their contact high to gen z during their developmental years... which largely explains their malfunctions.

From right after ww2 America flourished from the 50s to the mid 70s. Reagan came along and destroyed the American dream. And it was mostly our parents who voted for Reagan and Nixon, not the baby boomers. The oldest baby boomers were only in their early 30s or just turned 30 and were still idealistic.

R7 That's a Forbes/Business Insider creation meant to influence the corporate world just like past hits "Beware The Great Resignation" and "Working from home is actually BAD for women". They're psyops. Everybody decides not to go "above and beyond" when they no longer want to stay at their company and their looking for a new job. It's not something that a bunch of teenagers and young adults created this year. And the whole "They're not having enough sex thing" was a narrative created for the Millennials as well like 5 years ago. If you old guys really want to see us have sex, just follow the copious number of onlyFans accounts. There are tons of them, and you can probably pirate most of the shit. Or is the problem that "you" aren't fucking us? Hmm, strange because we've been listening to Lana for 10 years now. So out of all the generations of fags --- we are the most primed to get down with daddy. Maybe the problem is with you? Perhaps get on social media, put your pronouns in the bio, and repost a bunch of social justice infographics, and maybe that'll help you get the libtarded 19 yo twinks you want so desperately. I don't know why you'd want to, I can't stand guys more than two years younger than me.

I imagine Gen Z people cry at work a lot (which they spell "alot") and generally are overwhelmed with despair over word choices they've overheard. They probably are very well known to HR because they spend so much time filling out grievance reports.
I know some Gen Z people from my gym, and true to form they are obsessed with pronouns and I doubt they've ever voted in a primary election, or ever decided to just be happy and smiley all day, even one as a spiritual experiment. They hate anything old, or campy as their hyper-literal worldview only sees problems and adversaries, but not humor.

Or that if you criticize any aspect of American work culture you're lazy scum of the earth. They do seem to be fighting back against the idea that nothing is more fulfilling than working 50 years at a desk job before your heart gives out.

Nah. Us Baby boomers are the wisest and most well balanced generation.
We have the lived experience of life whilst the others can only theorize a lot of it.
We knew how to live life without technology and a true appreciation of modern technology adding to our lives rather than it being our lives.
We lived in the world of discrimination which gave us a stoic strength against it and also the appreciation of the freedoms we now enjoy. We appreciate the freedoms much more because we lived the contrasting existence of it.
All the other generations take everything for granted and never much had the lows of the baby boomers to really enjoys the highs of the modern world.
To all the delicate petals of today, I would say...grow a pair...to use an old fashioned phrase.

I went into massive student debt with astronomically high interest, but now my country has interest free student loans with no time limit, which is way better. It took me decades to pay mine off because it grew at the rate of mortgage interest.
I still can't get over that $45k figure - maybe that's why we have so many international students here.

r156 If they're aiming for "academic" majors (the majors we all give them grief for and the majors who complain the most about student loans and job unavailability), then private school is generally the way to go. . . same could apply to arts and music schools. Some of it is not so much about the quality of education as the opportunities it may provide.
but even for "trade" schools, especially in the entertainment or tech industry... a two year degree can be that much. Now these tend to be more course heavy. It's essentially a boot camp with equipment you could never dream to afford and most pubilc schools can't and the few that can are heavily impacted majors.. which increases prequisits and has waitlists. The same to be said for specialty music and arts schools.
Even in my day, it was a joke to do a five year degree (most of the engineering and comp sci in my day were five year) even if it increased your value because you were learning too much outside of what the job market desired (even tho, they still wanted people with degrees). . so, instead many picked up training on the go. But then everyone wanted you to be verified and so you had to pay to become certified.. even one day testing certificates (near to being diploma mills) were costly. Not as much but costly.
and STEM (and a good business program, I'd add).. even now opportunities arren't always available in your state and just finding a school with a legit major rather than a school that meets the minimal requirements for the name of the degree and adds a lot of unrelated filler. . . can be difficult. Again, impacted majors. So, many will include unis from outside their state or area.
Albeit there are workarounds but then they're just as likely to pay that much for their living expenses. Though now, there are a few low tuition, no tuition (but supplemental fees) that are srictly online. (though, I do know of handful of free tuition public schools but they're dinosaurs and even though they have lower standards, they're just as competitive because of demand. . . but their offerings are kind of slim, like Berea...I'd say the best program is crafting. It's a niche that keeps them afloat.)
by Anonymous | reply 161 | August 19, 2022 5:34 AM |
College is now only for rich kids which means jobs that require degrees will go more and more to rich kids, international or native, resulting in a huge dumb middle class with little access to ruling class jobs. Of course there will be a few exceptions highlighted to show that it’s just a matter of hard work or something.

It seems strange to think that university was totally free for me, including the accommodation. The government also paid my flights home 3 times a year, as the university was distant, and also fully paid my rhinoplasty (nose job) and other more important surgery at 21. It also paid an income for the three years after university I mooched around doing nothing, and then arranged for me to get a librarian job (without any prior training). Yes, it was an easier world. And there was so much visible cruising on the street! I could have got fucked 3 times just going out to buy milk. Whatever happened to that?! The world preAIDS and postAIDS is like another planet.

Just to add to the demise of street cruising: back in the day men were ALIVE to the possibility of being cruised when out walking, which doesn't occur now. Gay AND straight guys are now just half asleep or on their phones. Back then inner city streets were crackling with sexual electricity! Now street culture is quite non-sexual, very muted. It's a truly remarkable cultural change. Someone should write about it.
The old manager of my local sauna also bangs on about generational change. They have a 'youth night' and he says with wonderment and faint disgust that, apart from a few highly sexed unicorns, all they mostly do is sit around and TALK! "It's as if they're gonads have shrunk!" he says.

R171 being sex-positive (without turning into a total whore) is a healthy thing. Both physically and, especially, mentally.
Gen Z just seems so unhappy. The problem is that they are far too aware of all the shit that's going on, and I feel like they've been robbed of what should have been an innocent, fun adolescence.
They worry about war, inflation, housing, climate change, etc — and while these are all very valid concerns, it just isn't the kind of stuff that should run through your teenage/early 20s brain.
I may mock them from time to time, but I also feel very sorry for them. What's more, if your average Gen-Z is about 20 now, I have to say I don't feel ANY connection and I'm only 15 years older. But maybe that's because my generation was the last to grow up without the internet? And when I started going to the bars and clubs in Amsterdam at about 18, Facebook was something you barely knew about ("an American thing") and the iPhone wouldn't make its debut until 2007, with Grindr still 4 years away.
We took our little Motorola flip phone with us, but since you could only play a game of Snake, that thing stayed firm in our pocket whilst out and about. And you would simply.. chat someone up.

Millennial here. Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet, but asking for consent has to be one of the biggest boner killing things some of them do. Example: You chat on Grindr, meet up, head to the sofa or wherever, and instead of just making a move by putting a hand on your thigh, reaching for a zipper, or leaning in , they will ask for consent, “Is it OK if I do this?” A few will even do that several times. Fuck Off, weird cunts. On the rare chance I’m not feeling you and still there for some reason, I’d push your hand or whatever away. I’m a man. I don’t want to talk about it like a legal contract. I want to Fuck.

r214 it's the state of universities now... even the lasses are at risk for non consensual and date rape charges, these days. There's been a few major ones in the last few years. . . albeit, privacy wasn't well contained and two lad it favored ended up in the msm and harassed from every corner.
So, many schools instruct them to continuously seek verbal consent before each and every action and during to make sure their partner(s) are still consenting.
If they don't and the other person feels violated, it's an automatic guilty but the school will muster a private (layman) investigation and have their own mock court system... in addition to or even separate from city/state/feds.
This has been an issue for quite a while now but it's gone into overdrive with consenting classes that are handled by idiots. They've long wanted to makes such courses mandatory but each attempt seems to violate title ix rather than allows for abuse of it like the uni sex tribunal and professors having to apply trigger warnings to everything.

Life isn’t a realityized Disneyland it it a shit show of suffering and putting up with shit punctured by good times with friends then it is back to fucking work.I get a lot of different reactions from laughter to horror disgust eye rolls etc. it’s easy to deflect any negative pushback by just presenting it as history of how we grew up which is perfectly accurate.

I was in a Halloween prop making group which got new, younger moderators and suddenly we had to put trigger warnings on any posts that had blood in it and mark things with fake spiders "TW Arachnophobia".
Anything more extreme showing fake zombies etc got banned.
This was a fucking HALLOWEEN PROPS group!

[quote]Gen Z is just as homophobic as any other generation. I’ve called the f-word by youngins today.
Very true. A stroll across any L.A. Unified campus will assure you that "fag" and "gay" are still frequently used as put downs, unfortunately.
I also had it out with a young teacher last spring who made homophobic comments towards 2 male students who were merely hugging.

Observing the Gen X parents at work explains a lot to me. People joke about it here a bit, but "I have to leave work early today because my teenage daughter needs me!" is a common occurrence, at least in my workplace. Also: "I was up late last night doing my kid's homework" is another one. Oh and "yes, I know my son stole money to pay for his video games, but I can't take his PS5 off him for a week as punishment - that would be too cruel!"
Just having discussions with Gen Z shows an attitude towards sex of everything being problematic, but it's also their parents who are terrified by their kids having sex which I think has added to this. We were talking sex education at work not that long ago and people looked at me weirdly when I said that at the end of the day sex was meant to be fun - because to them sex education is all about warning kids of DANGER! They are at risk of being sexually exploited and assaulted at every turn, apparently.

^Just to add too, we hire a lot of Gen Z casuals in our workplace, and by and large they are really great workers, very eager to learn and respectful, despite what the stereotype is. Just my experience.

OP, you don't have to tell us you're a millennial, you begin sentences with the word "So." It's embarrassingly obvious.

Their parents really should have forced the real world upon them. Virtual socializing isn't cutting it. Face time is important so as not to lose ones empathy for others. My niece in law, whose probably never seen daylight, told a phone friend(met online, never in person) that she would be ending their call to visit her grandmother. She sounded just like a soulless robot.
"I have to end call. I'm socializing with my grandmother." More robotic sounding than Alexa.

I do find the sexual prudishness very irritating. I mean is everything sexual assault? It feels so conservative. I hate this extended adolescence and worship of youth. Being an adult who's responsible for yourself, has their own income, own independent thoughts and freedom is a much happier life than being adolescent which entails depending on others and constantly seeking validation and slavery to social trends. As a millennial I could not wait to grow up but I have peers that still seem stuck in their high school days and can't move on. Gen Z is a victim of Gen X and older Millennial fraus who overparented them and absent dads. Millennials were a lot more free range it seems. A lot of us didn't have social media or cell phones until we were in our late teens or 20s. So getting lost and being out all day and night was a rite of passage.
by Anonymous | reply 247 | September 2, 2022 3:10 AM |
r247 In my experience, millennials freaked out if they had to walk a few miles from home and required therapy when confronted with pay phones. . . and still require a mechanic to locate a dipstick.
The problems I've found with X parents is that a lot more are tiger parents. A slight difference from helicopter in that rather than coddling they attempt to overload them with knowledge or responsibilities (sometimes, both) and yet being the contrarians they tend to be instill within them to question traditions, institutions and authority. .. X still retains many of its stereotypical generation markers, so while they do expect more from their kids, they, themselves, treat the outside with indifference and skeptisim... they really can't be bothered with teacher assessments and tend to find it all to be a pile of bs.
The kiddies ended up as pill popping basketcases influenced by millennials online, which although X initially tried to steer them away from that outcome, like all other parents before them, they inevitably gave up.
And so, a second generation was born of kiddies that fried out their braincells on prescription meds while running to grandparents that hated X because they climbed up on the cross and refused to get down.

Odd how Gen X hates Gen Z despite raising them. Just like how Boomers hated Gen X and millennials despite raising them. And Silent Generation hated Boomers. Some things never change...
by Anonymous | reply 259 | September 19, 2022 1:13 PM |
Most of the interactions I've had with them - and I raised not a single one - have been less than wonderful. Attemps to speak to any of them solicit sarcasm, fake personas, but seemingy nothing genuine. I will say Gen X, we weren't perfect and aren't, but we know how to banter and how to take a joke. The precious cotton wool they were raised in - constanty told how special they are, etc. - juxtaposed against a world of horrors has produced some defensive personalities.

I'm a college prof in Switzerland and the young aren't very different from a decade or 2 decades ago. The big difference is their attachment to smart phones. Socially I see none of what OP mentions, in their interactions with each other or with staff. But I must say I don't "try to hang out with them".

My Gen-X friend has a daughter in her early twenties. She coddled her to death. I wonder if that's why most of them are like that.

My nieces were given iPads when they were small children by their bizarre father (my brother-in-law) and each are severely weird up to the border of spectrum disorder, but not exactly. They have very limited social skills and are entirely self-involved and unable to do much of anything, but my sister rarely asks them to get off their asses. I just can't see them working ever or being self-sufficient adults as they melt down so easily and become paralyzed if you look at them funny.
I wish my sister never had kids, they suck.

I’m not surprised they’re not getting laid. This is a generation that has appointed itself as the morality police and deliberately misinterpreting jokes and trying to point out all the ways your partner is impure while you’re perfect is poisonous for establishing relationships. You can’t be vulnerable and open with a constant fear of unnecessary confrontation.
I was talking to a Z guy for a bit and he took offense to something I said. It wasn’t bad and it wasn’t drastic but he said it was “problematic.” I completely lost interest at that point. I strive to be empathetic and sensitive but I’m not perfect, I didn’t grow up in this witch-hunt culture, and I don’t want to walk on eggshells.
I felt a little bad because I could tell he was interested and I sort of ghosted him which I regret now. I think I should’ve been honest because that’s a hard lesson to earn.
Online speak doesn’t translate the same way in person, especially when it’s confrontational. I don’t want to spend my downtime with a confrontational person.

The high school kids I work with take no responsibility for any of their actions. They refuse to think beyond what is in their field of vision. Their parents accept it and coddle them. One is doing her daughter's college applications for her. That parent is not going to be with her when darling daughter is four hours away and needs to do everything for herself. Another kid doesn't want to share a bathroom at college, so he's not applying to any colleges where he'll have to do it in the dorms.
I just don't get how far we have fallen.
