These little guys are endlessly fascinating.
I was overwhelmed with guilt just now.

You don't kill them do you R1?
I always scoop them up and put outside but I have a little jumping spider that acts playful around my computer.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 16, 2022 9:19 PM |
I have not been convicted of that, r4, so my answer would have to be no.

I can live with spiders in the yard but I don't want them on me or to walk into their webs. I will escort them outside if they get in.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 16, 2022 9:24 PM |
I love them. I have a boat and took it out last weekend. Dove off it and when I grabbed the ladder to pull it into the water so I could climb back into the boat, I found 3 big spiders on the ladder. They would have drown if I pulled down the ladder.
I tried to shoo them off the ladder and onto the boat, but they wouldn't cooperate. (I didn't want to pick them up because they were big and I didn't want to get bit.)
So I swam around until I found a twig. Used that to shepherd them to safety so I could get into the boat.
Love them!

by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 16, 2022 9:40 PM |
that's the spider I usually get. the other ones I leave be or vacuum up but, fuck giant house spiders. and, they are not afraid of you. raid doesn't affect them. ugh.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 16, 2022 9:41 PM |
R10 oh hell no. I'd have a hard time getting that out without screaming.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 16, 2022 9:43 PM |
Spiders aren't that bad. Flies are extremely annoying, centipedes and roaches are creepy, moths eat your food, termites destroy your home and yellow jackets and mosquitoes are just violent and hostile. Spiders generally stay to themselves and kill the nuisances. They're basically like cats just not cuddly.

I live in Tucson where there are tons of tarantulas out right now. The monsoons flood their homes so they're always walking around on the pavement looking for a new home. They're like little David Banners. They aren't aggressive at all or fast, I just try and avoid stepping on them and usually say, "Hi spider, I see you!" just so they know I know they're there.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 16, 2022 10:17 PM |
r23 SoCal, too, especially when they started developing housing tracks more inland... it inspired several horror films as towns would be invaded by them, especially during droughts during the summer and winter; trying to escape cold desert nights and hot days. . . they would flood many a convenient store at night or or blanketing the roads.
Kind of like the aftermath of cicadas in the east or locus of the midwest... somewhat of a rarity that only pops up every few years or with massive sprawl.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 16, 2022 10:31 PM |
I'm glad I live in the upper-midwest. With a yearly hard freeze we don't get much in the way of spiders, snakes and other assorted creepy-crawlies
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 16, 2022 10:40 PM |
Aww that makes me sad R24. I hope they were able to find food or water or whatever they were looking for. When I see them here I know they're just trying to wait out the rain and maybe eat some annoying bugs to help all of us. I think they may be protected here and that you're not allowed to mess with them. They keep to themselves and aren't trying to scare people but when I hear a scream, I know someone saw one.

But you have fleas, right R25? Thank god there's no fleas in the desert. I would way rather deal with an occasional spider than to have fleas. I hate them so much!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 16, 2022 10:42 PM |
I love spiders, and never kill them. When I see spiders, honey bees, and anoles in my yard or house, I'm happy. Have no issues with the wasp family, either, despite on several occasions being repeatedly stung.
But if I could blink and wish entities into the cornfield, it would be raccoons, flies/grubs/maggots, sowbugs, fleas, slugs, parasitic worms and earthworms.
Disgusting creatures.

@r28, We don't really have a lot of noticeable fleas. I have a dog and he's never had any. Ants and flies are about the only bugs that can be a little pesty

Something I read that made me sleep easier is that black widow spiders are quite shy. They donāt come looking for you, and will try to hide⦠like the little cowards they are!

I have wolf spiders in my house and they grow to be massive. Theyāre fast as hell too, so I out sticky spider traps all over. I feel a little bit bad, because it must be a horrible way to die, but I am so creeped out by them that I canāt sleep sometimes. I went to bed one night and woke up to a dead floating spider in my water glass. Iām traumatized.

How do you think the spider felt, r39? I kid, I kid...
I really like spiders, too. The larger ones and the bitey/venomous ones I don't want on my person, obviously. But the little ones I find in my apartment, including the jumping spiders, always make me smile.
Ever since I dreamt about a friendly spider during a drumming circle, I've looked upon their appearance as an encouraging wink from the universe. They like to drop down on a thread right in front of my face, and it only seems to happen when I'm feeling particularly low.
All that said, I'm so grateful the brown recluse is indeed reclusive. I've seen what their bites can do. And the aggressive ones who live in Australia whose bite can pierce a fingernail. Sweet Jesus, protect us all from the angry arachnids.

R47 They're really fragile, if they fell from that height they would split open and you wouldn't have to worry about killing it. I like R41's attitude, yeah, they can signify good things.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 17, 2022 1:26 PM |
Sometimes I think they are trying to communicate. The little jumpers, I mean. I had a cute little one who would pop out from behind my computer monitor when I was working from home. He'd wave his front legs and I could tell he was looking directly at me. Then he would do a little dance and stop, then repeat. He also liked hide and seek. I'd move my finger close and he'd dart behind the screen, then come out and repeat.

I find most spiders repellent, but jumping spiders are cute and seem intelligent. Theyāre like a cartoon version of a spider. Itās a good thing they are tiny.
R29: Hey, leave earthworms alone. Like bees, they are important for the environment.
Raccoons are disruptive and annoying. They can live their lives, just not on my property.
Not a fan of sowbugs/pillbugs. Itās fine as long as they stay outside. The rest of the creatures on your list (letās include ticks, bedbugs, and mosquitoes) can die in a grease fire.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 17, 2022 4:56 PM |
Jumping spiders are remarkably intelligent for an animal so small.

R38 Oh I am very shy! I won't approach you, I will just giggle coquettishly. I will, however, eat all the flies and other bugs in your perimeter, then I just want to nap.
