Academy apologizes to Sacheen Littlefeather for her mistreatment at the 1973 Oscars

[quote]Nearly 50 years after suffering harassment and discrimination for protesting Native American mistreatment, the activist will be the guest of honor at an evening of healing and Indigenous celebration hosted by the Academy Museum on Sept. 17, featuring something she never dared to imagine: a formal apology from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

[quote]Littlefeather’s 60-second plea for justice resulted in immediate and enduring personal backlash. She says that in the wings, John Wayne had to be restrained from storming the stage to physically attack her, while in the aftermath, her identity and integrity were impugned (the rumors were so abiding that in 2012, Dennis Miller mocked Elizabeth Warren by calling her “as much Indian as that stripper chick Brando sent to pick up his Oscar”). Littlefeather, who had acted in a few films before her infamous moment, says that the federal government threatened to shut down any talk shows or productions that put her on the air.

A day late and a dollar short.

Also PR penance for goodwill since Will Smith assaulted a host last time.

We didn’t forget, you morons, especially with Will and his wizened bald elf doing the “sushi in Malibu” pap walk.

by Anonymousreply 2August 15, 2022 7:36 PM

Dear Hollywood, Please give it a rest.

by Anonymousreply 3August 15, 2022 7:38 PM

She's got terminal cancer. That's why the Academy suddenly realized this is something they should do. Such a convenient attack of good conscience.

by Anonymousreply 4August 15, 2022 7:40 PM

She sounds like such a lovely person. I wish her well.

As a young and stupid prepubescent, I thought she was the Land O Lakes maiden preventing Brando from receiving the Imperial butter crown.

by Anonymousreply 12August 15, 2022 8:47 PM

When Liv Ullman said "To be elegant is to be silent." was she making a reference to her work in (wink, wink) Persona?

by Anonymousreply 13August 15, 2022 8:58 PM

OP, thanks for posting this. I never knew about this story, and I have something new to research and learn.

John Wayne was a piece of shit, as were many others who booed her.

She did nothing wrong.

I’m still amazed that the United States government and right wing politicians, are still so hell bent on occluding it’s psychopathic history in their depraved treatment of Native Americans and the human trafficking victims who became America’s slaves.

Good on Brando. It’s always the anti establishment ones who are depicted as crazy and held out for ridicule and public scrutiny, with plenty of room for a public flogging, but it’s always the crazy.ones who have more integrity than a room filled with hypocritical fucker who have zero balls and can only be brave when a camera is pointed on them.

by Anonymousreply 20August 15, 2022 11:42 PM

Ullman and Moore are apprehensive. They knew she was going to make a speech if Brando won.

As she says it has been cut for time.

It was a little hypocritical of Brando to turn down the award AFTER the voting.

They should have just let bitchass John Wayne storm the stage and show the American people who he really is. To think the humiliation could've been captured on camera and he would've never been able to live it down.

by Anonymousreply 40August 16, 2022 1:52 AM

What a load of revisionist horseshit. She was an actress hired to do this by Brando, she's not even Native American, her name is Maria Cruz, she took 3rd place is the Miss American Vampire Pageant, and no one did a tomahawk chop towards her. No one believes the John Wayne story, either.

by Anonymousreply 41August 16, 2022 1:53 AM

John Wayne whether or not he wanted to storm or not is still a douche even in death. To me he was the draft dodging trump of his time. He always played a patriot, a cowboy...a “real American” but avoided the war because he was afraid it would screw up his career as a crappy actor

by Anonymousreply 42August 16, 2022 1:58 AM

The John Wayne story is why pop history and rumors become enlarged. First, he had to be restrained from attacking her backstage, behind the curtain. Was this verbally or physically? Then he had to be restrained from charging onto the stage and stopping her from speaking. Again, what action was the goal? Take the mike, remove her from the stage, make a statement of his own? I agree he's a douche but this is how rumors grow legs and wind up on Wikipedia.

When it comes to Native Americans and how they are viewed among the greater culture they are in a very unique and complicated position. On the one hand Natives living with their tribes on reservations have and continue to experience racism and bigotry off the reservations, but at the same time many, many people off of reservations claim Native descent. From Frist Families of Virginia claiming descent from Pocahontas to Elizabeth Warren's dubious family claims, many Americans, white and black, claim Native descent. Too many people, seem to forget that there are actual Natives living on reservations today, unless you visit a casino. I think many just assume Natives have been, for the most part, absorbed into wider America and is no longer a separate race/category.

Are they going to apologise to the streaker from back then? David Niven told the whole world the guy had a small dick. That is dick shaming and not allowed!!!

by Anonymousreply 78August 20, 2022 5:05 PM

I remember people talking about the incident in the 70s and 80s, and no one said Wayne needed to be held back. That became part of the story later. In older interviews, Littlefeather says she was told he had to be held back, not that she saw it herself. There is, I believe, a clip where you can see him in the background and someone has their hand on his shoulder, so maybe these are the sources for the rumor changing from "John Wayne was angry" to "John Wayne had to be restrained."

I saw many people on Twitter say the Self Styled Siren essay was "necessary" and "important" and it is neither. It's interesting, but does this fact change anything important? It does not. Littlefeather was still sent up there by a coward, as Michael Caine said that night, and he was right. Brando didn't have the guts to get up there himself. She was booed, made fun of, criticized all night, and the Academy not only released statements slamming her, but changed the rules about 3rd party acceptance of awards so that didn't happen again.

Whether Wayne had to be held back or not doesn't change anything, but some people (who work for right-wing tabloid propaganda outfits like New York Post) very much want you to think it does.

by Anonymousreply 79August 20, 2022 5:07 PM

[quote] Did you see those John Ford westerns such as 'Cheyenne Autumn' in the 60s when he seemed to 'apologise' for his earlier gung-ho movies with John Wayne.

The Searchers is an almost direct apology for The Big Trail, one of Wayne's first films.

Wayne acted in it but I'm certain he did not agree with its politics. The Playboy interview he gave in 1971 that goes viral every couple of years makes that very clear. He very bluntly states that Europeans were the good guys in taking land from Indians who were "selfish" for wanting to keep their own land for themselves. He then starts bitching about "socialists" wanting to give handouts to Indians.

The Oscar story is apocryphal, rather than an outright lie.

by Anonymousreply 81August 20, 2022 5:58 PM

So... no apology to Brando? Whose idea this was?

Brando was the one who wanted to give a great big middle finger to the AMPAS, and who didn't have the balls to do it himself.

by Anonymousreply 82August 20, 2022 6:50 PM

The American Indians were not the noble savages people want to portray them to be. They practically extincted the bison and took out tons of birds for their feathers. They are just as destructive as everyone else. If the natives hadn't succumbed to plagues before we got here we would not have been able to conquer this country. 90% had already died from earlier explorers coming onshore and giving the natives diseases they were not used to or animal viruses jumping species.

by Anonymousreply 83August 20, 2022 9:09 PM

R82 the fact is Brando didn’t think this through entirely. AMPAS is only one part of the motion picture industry, not the entire thing. Abuse is rampant in all forms making movies. Whether it’s people or animals. It would’ve been better if he addressed ALL this in person on that stage, if he felt so strongly. He brought some exposure to the Indian issue, but it didn’t last long. It was pretty much the cause of the day for him. Plus George C Scott turned his Oscar down two years before. This rebellion was kind of in the air, so Brando might’ve taken a cue from him. Sacheen has said they lost contact not long after she did this for him. And the fact that Brando continued to take large sums for as little work as possible (Superman in particular), because he couldn’t do anything else, from the film industry made him not only a coward but a hypocrite.

by Anonymousreply 84August 20, 2022 11:03 PM

R83 You ignorant motherfucker.

Biologists estimate that in 1830 - around the time Whitey started widespread settlements of Western North America - the Plains Bison numbered somewhere between 30 million and 60 million. To put this into context, today there are roughly 30 million head of cattle in the entire United States. This is a shitload of Bison roaming around the Great Plains. Native tribes coexisted with these animals for generations, and any hunting activities they undertook did nothing to dent a species population that was still quite staggering when Whitey showed up with guns and trains.

By 1884, a scant half-century later, the count of Plains Bison reached its lowest recorded number of about 300 head. That's tens of millions of animals killed in fifty years. It wasn't the low-impact Natives doing this mass killing. It was White settlers, who hunted the animals for fun and to help control the Native American population by depriving them of a vital food source. Bison meat was not widely consumed by White settlers, but the bodies were easily ground up as fertilizer, glue, brushes, and other household products needed on frontier homesteads.

The bison of North America were nearly extirpated by White assholes with guns. End. Of. Story.

by Anonymousreply 85August 20, 2022 11:18 PM

Also R83, "we" didn't "conquer" this "country." When European settlers arrived, there was no "country" here. It was a settled landmass inhabited by tribes of varying degrees of formal governance. It's not invading Grenada, taking down one flag, and hanging up another. Nothing was conquered.

The people and animals who lived here first - the land's rightful owners, informal or else - were murdered, displaced, or assimilated into the invading culture. But that doesn't make them conquered in some jingoistic battle. It mostly just makes them dead.

If you want to include yourself in that group of white savages, and use the pronoun "we" as if you're a part of that, go right ahead.

by Anonymousreply 86August 20, 2022 11:22 PM

[quote] The people and animals who lived here first - the land's rightful owners, informal or else - were murdered, displaced, or assimilated into the invading culture.

If we are going by who was living someplace first to decide a land's rightful owners, I hope you also support Jewish Zionism.

by Anonymousreply 87August 20, 2022 11:27 PM

R87 Deflection denied. We're talking about Native Americans, per the topic of this post.

If you want to clumsily bait people into bitching about Jews and Israel, go start your own thread, and be buried under more "FFs" than that time you tried fisting in Branson.

by Anonymousreply 88August 20, 2022 11:31 PM

R84 Brando went insane in Japan in 1958.

He became uncontrollable after that and progressively nuttier in the ensuing years.

by Anonymousreply 89August 20, 2022 11:54 PM

R88 I'm not defecting nor baiting I just want to understand if you are a hypocrite? Or do you think that it only applies to Native Americans due to the fact that you can rightfully blame White Europeans for what was done to them?

Natives have been done horribly in every modern nation-state in North or South America, there is no denying that. But, it also doesn't automatically make natives better than anyone else. Before, and after, Europeans arrived on these shores the natives warred with one another and took territory, just like every tribe and country has done throughout the world since mankind emerged. It is selective outrage to claim it was fine for tribes to murder each other and take land, but Europeans couldn't join them. Just like slavery, has existed and continues to exist, around the world from the beginning until today. What gets people upset is that somehow, America seems to get singled out as the worst on these issues. Like we should shoulder all the blame for doing things, that every other country had or would've done if given the chance. And, given none of the credit for, in the grand scheme of things, figuring out they were wrong much quicker than most other countries. Who would've imagined in 1776 that around 150 years later the Vice President would be a Native American. Or that less than a hundred years after our founding we would fight a war amongst ourselves about slavery?

Yes, we have national sins, but we recognize and repent of them rather quickly according to the arc of history.

I am tired of the only two types of US History there seems to be today is either a completely sanitized one that says everything was great, or one that says the US was, has, and always will be a nation of little white Hitlers. Tell the whole story, the good and the bad, but don't lose sight of the fact that America has always grown better. We were never great, we will never be great, but we always strive to be great, and sometimes we manage to get it right.

by Anonymousreply 90August 20, 2022 11:57 PM

[quote] it also doesn't automatically make natives better than anyone else.

Yes, Virtue Signallers just love victims.

[quote] ‘The Superior Virtue of the Oppressed’, an essay by Bertrand Russell, in which the most admired British philosopher of the last century observed: ‘One of the persistent delusions of mankind is that some sections of the human race are morally better or worse than others.’

[quote] He went on to say that while most people think their own group is morally superior, there are those who ‘tend to think well of the sections of mankind to which they themselves do not belong. A rather curious form of this admiration for groups to which the admirer does not belong is a belief in the superior virtue of the oppressed: subject nations, the poor, women and children.’

by Anonymousreply 91August 21, 2022 12:01 AM

[quote] It was a settled landmass inhabited by tribes of varying degrees of formal governance

I wonder if they fought amongst themselves?

Did they rape and pillage other tribes in order to steal wives and refresh their own tribe's gene pool?

by Anonymousreply 94August 21, 2022 1:54 AM

I know one thing, there's a whole lot of Cunts on this thread.

Also, the only real victims in Americas history are, Native Americans and African Americans. The European white settlers created all if this & no one else really matters. Everyone else invited themselves to a party they weren't invited to. The original stars in the story of America are, the white settlers the Native Americans and African Americans. Those are the golden three groups of the founding of America.

"Brando went insane in Japan in 1958. He became uncontrollable after that and progressively nuttier in the ensuing years."

He really did go off his nut, and was totally insane by the 1990s, a toxic and completely self-indulgent narcissist. What happened? Just Hollywood ego disease?

R101 I suspect Brando was overwhelmed by the massive gulf between the Hollywood-La-La-Fakery and the Japanese still recovering from poverty and the Atomic bomb.

He seems to have 'Gone Native' after that in his lifestyle and choice of wives.

Okay, the old rumor I heard about Brando was that he'd had a sexual relationship with his mother, and as a consequence he was both as fucked-up as are most people who suffered childhood sexual abuse, and that he never wanted to touch another blonde or white woman. So his primary sexual interest was women of color.

Plus men, and at least one of his daughters. So fucking what if he was sexually abused himself as a child, that wouldn't give him any right to do the same to others. I hope there's a hell, so he can burn in it.

[quote] I think it was her co star Victor Banerjee in APTI who was upset. PA wanted him to accept for her Peggy Ashcroft was 'generous to a fault' … in other words she was overly-generous and that worked against her.
