Tom Holland: Social Media is "very detrimental to my mental state"

Actor Tom Holland has revealed that he is stepping back from social media for the sake of his mental health.

Though he says he's deleted the app, the Spider-Man: No Way Home star, 26, made a brief return to Instagram over the weekend to speak out about how engaging online affects his mental health.

"I have taken a break from social media for my mental health because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming," the British actor shared in a video posted to his account. "I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online, and ultimately, it's very detrimental to my mental state. So I decided to take a step back and delete the app."

What prompted Holland's "very, very brief" return to social media? His support, as co-founder of The Brothers Trust, of Stem4Org, a U.K.-based charity committed to raising awareness about teenage mental health. As Holland explained, the organization has four apps — Calm Harm, Clear Fear, Combined Minds and Move Mood — designed to boost users' mental health.

"Asking for help and seeking help isn't something to be ashamed of, but it is something that is much easier said than done," Holland added. "So hopefully these apps can be your first step toward being happier and healthier."

The post marks the actor's first since July 1 and has garnered praise from the likes of Justin Bieber, who commented, "Love you man."

Prior to his self-imposed ban on social media, Holland had been an active poster, frequently leaving comments on girlfriend Zendaya's posts. The couple were the subject of a pregnancy rumor that went viral in June, possibly cooling Holland's ardor for social media in the process. "See now, this is why I stay off Twitter," Zendaya posted in response to the debunked rumor. "Just making stuff up for no reason ... weekly."

See what you've caused, Datalounge!

by Anonymousreply 1August 15, 2022 7:47 AM

I think social media is very determined to *everyone’s* mental health tbh.

by Anonymousreply 2August 15, 2022 8:10 AM

Well, he probably should delete Grindr too.

by Anonymousreply 3August 15, 2022 8:23 AM

Drop the dyke beard.

by Anonymousreply 4August 15, 2022 8:26 AM

Be specific, Tom.

What are people saying, that's causing you so much distress?

I quit social for the same reason. Walking around angry and outraged takes a lot out of you. It's mental masturbation in it's worse form, because there's no pay-off, just new outrage

[quote] I quit social for the same reason. Walking around angry and outraged takes a lot out of you. It's mental masturbation in it's worse form, because there's no pay-off, just new outrage

That's precisely why there's so much crazy going on around us nowdays.

Tom is right.

by Anonymousreply 9August 15, 2022 9:09 AM

r2 it's long been said the same of the news as well. . .

ignorance being bliss and all that.

by Anonymousreply 10August 15, 2022 9:10 AM

R2 I came here to say that. And I'm not talking about the maybe 2 percent who manage to not be generic after a while. Formerly intelligent, nuanced people start to sound like bots. Social media, and I don't mean DL but the algorithm powered data mining operation that is Twitter and Facebook, is bad for almost everyone. He will miss nothing.

Yeah, all that laughing at his fauxmance must hurt.

by Anonymousreply 13August 15, 2022 10:27 AM

I think I'm one of the few that thinks the whole blaming of social media for everything is actually a tired argument. Yeah, it can be bad, and too much of anything is not good for you. But It's only part of the issue. I think a lot of these kids are going to realize that life isn't really all that easier without it, and the problems are deeper than social media itself. And the cynic in me doesn't even believe them half the time. A lot of these kids are still on it, and they know they are. Like everything in life, it's about what you put your focus on, surround yourself with, etc. Who and what you follow on social media is the exact same extension of that. It's all about balance.

As for someone like Tom, I'm surprised he doesn't have a publicist assigned specifically to handle his social feeds. It's basically industry standard practice by now.

His height, no lips and shitty acting are detrimental to my mental state.

I think some celebs are now forced to say this because social media has ruined a lot of careers. At around 2015 almost every celeb had joined social media and since then people got more and more annoyed with them. To the point were the magic and mystery around celebs has completly vanished.

by Anonymousreply 17October 7, 2022 7:04 PM

[quote]social media has ruined a lot of careers

🤭

by Anonymousreply 18October 7, 2022 7:06 PM

R18 it was preventable though because it mostly exposed celebs for having created a fake persona while they are actually baddies. If they had been poltically imcorrect from the start, I guess people like Teigen or Rosie-ann and Norm Mcdonalds would have survived their cancelling. This whole era of casting out celebs has shown the stupidity of the average celebrity. They'd rather be remembered as someone "made-up that appeals to the masses" than their real selfs. That's why these losers apologized so quickly without actually meaning it. No self-respect at all and they got removed anyways.

Harrison is more age appropriate for Tom, than Jake Gyllenhaal.

Personally, I prefer Tom/Harrison than Tom/Jake.

Their sex must be amazing.

by Anonymousreply 29October 7, 2022 8:16 PM

There is a trend in the UK right now to quit social media or limit it strongly amongst people with high stress jobs. Understanding how social media works, I think it’s courageous for a young person to nope out of it if they want to.

by Anonymousreply 30October 7, 2022 8:23 PM

He got scared when he found out how many old guys want to fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 31March 29, 2023 2:54 AM

Holland being a gay man and pretending to be in straight fake relationships for the Heterosexuals is far more detrimental to mental health than Twitter. It really is tiring watching these closet cases like Tom, Levi, and ShawnM complain about their mental health.

by Anonymousreply 37March 29, 2023 7:50 AM

Yes, this is how he is announcing his retirement from showbz. He is no longer a thing for you to shit on, Ed.win.

Ed.win will get another herpes sore in 3...2...1...

by Anonymousreply 39March 29, 2023 7:56 AM

??? who is Ed.Win ? and why would anyone call me that ?

by Anonymousreply 40March 29, 2023 8:05 AM

r14 Of course quitting social media doesn't solve all the world's problems, but life is infinitely better without social media.

by Anonymousreply 41March 29, 2023 8:15 AM

The last Spider Man movie, on top of the nice bonuses from his other Marvel work, meant he can never work again and be just fine. Of course, Tom will continue to work. He may even try to marry Zendaya since she's also bringing in major money (compared to most actresses) right now. Zendaya is about the only true A-list with genuine Hollywood and public buzz, so Tom is going to hang on to her for dear life.

by Anonymousreply 42March 29, 2023 8:27 AM

[quote] but life is infinitely better without social media.

No. It is not. As someone who has experienced life before and after all this social media, blaming it as the sole source of the problem is a cop-out. Period. In reality, it only exposes what is already true for the individual.

by Anonymousreply 43March 29, 2023 8:29 AM

R42 = Out of your mind. You think Lezzby Z and Tom are REAL? ....Grow up. ...The fact that Tom COULD come out and not have it effect him financially just makes him a worse person for staying in the closet..

by Anonymousreply 44March 29, 2023 9:49 AM

R44 Tom is hoping she'll introduce him to Timmy.

by Anonymousreply 45March 29, 2023 11:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 47March 30, 2023 12:10 AM

A break-up with Zendaya in 3, 2, 1..

by Anonymousreply 48March 30, 2023 12:11 AM

I'd really like to quit social media, but with my ADHD I need constant stimulation and I'm not sure where to get it if not the internet (I count sites like DL as social media).

by Anonymousreply 49March 30, 2023 12:26 AM

R30 I was talking to a person from the uk in a high stress job this past weekend. I think it’s important, especially with younger people. All people can be affected by it in a deleterious way. It’s actually completely unnatural to the human mind..

by Anonymousreply 50March 30, 2023 10:41 PM

I was just thinking the other day, that the internet could easily be the tree of the knowledge of good and evil from the Garden of Eden. The good part is all the cumulative knowledge of mankind, every book, every piece of music and artwork. The bad part is looking into the soul of humankind. The darkness changes you.
