Watching Brokeback Mountain for the first time ever right now
I never was a huge fan of the 2 lead actors who peaked in my college years so I didn't bother previously.
The movie is on 1 of the Starz channels now
I must say the acting is pretty good so far.
It's annoying though that Heath Ledger in almost every scene is smoking. I get it, the film takes place in the 60s but ugh so unattractive.
Waiting for the love scenes. Heath looks older than mid 20s here. Jake brings a boyishness to his role

David Harbor (Hopper on "Stranger Things") is the bearded Texan flirting with Jake at a dance. Apparently he's the same character Jake brought to his family's ranch with a plan to turn it into a tourist trap.

It's a bit surprising there hasn't been a mainstream gay film since BM. I know ML came around a few years later, but that was an indie that kind of caught everyone by surprise. Unless I'm forgetting something?

R29 there certainly should be more gay mainstream movies but some issues keep happening:
1. you have some heteros screaming "why is every movie lgbtq these days?" even though that's obviously false. They are triggered by the inclusion of more gay roles. Some of them go further and refer to us "the alphabet people" and "gay agenda"
2. some gays are mad when straight actors play gay roles. Personally I don't mind some straights in gay roles since it helps to increase gay acceptance. I definitely don't want most gay roles going to straights though
3. There's also a debate about how much sexuality should be shown in lgbtq roles. Some want to lay it all there. Others say we're being pigeonholed and stereotyped as sex-crazed. I feel there's room for both sexual and non-sexual gay films

sad that Jake's character dies and for about the last 30 minutes of the film or so Heath's character is facing the consequences of deciding not to be with him.
their last scene together was another toxic hodgepodge of flirting, tenderness, another fight and then cuddling. Some DL guys are still like that now though. Super clingy but you can't actually be partners with them since they don't want people to know

how fitting Heath goes into Jake's closet to get the shirt he wore when they had 1 of their bloody brawls
touching symbolism
eh this film is kinda depressing. I get it, it was the 60s and taking place in the rural shithole areas. More realistic than a happy ending

I think it's a clever angle to have Jake's character die of an accident but Heath is haunted by the vision of him being killed through gay-bashing. He's showing his insecurities and sense of guilt at the same time

Jake didn't need to 'act'.
He was just there and the camera loved him for it. No forced thespianism was required.

yes I will say I think Heath was stronger here. He seemed more natural. Shocking his accent was even better. I don't know if Jake purposely didn't go for as thick of a country accent but his was more subdued. When they started yelling, Heath maintained his accent but Jake almost lost his and you could hear his regular speaking voice which was disappointing.

R10 It's not obvious? They are deeply closeted and there is a societal prohibition on men touching each other any way except violently.
She gets a lot of hate which is a shame but I also liked Anne Hathaway in this, she stood out as more independent and with more backbone than Michelle, making it appropriate she married Jack who is the braver of the two guys.
Heath got the physical characterisation/body language of his character very well. I also accept there were legitimate acting reasons for the weird, mumbling, squeaking voice he chose to do but I could probably have done without that.

(from R47) hence the punch which is an early major plot point in the film and short story.
Speaking of which I also think Annie Proulx, the original story writer (worth reading!), deserves a lot of credit as a straight woman for managing very convincing portraits of these two closeted 1960s cowboys, though I think she rather goofed at the suggestion that Ennis' secret gayness made him only want anal sex from his wife.

They didn't cut it. The scene with them jumping off the cliff is there but it is and always was a long shot. Those pics were leaked by paparazzi or someone on the set and Ledger was very upset they were leaked.

Sweet Gesu on a cracker. You know what? People smoke, they crap, they puke, they piss on themselves, they end their lives connected to a colostomy bag. It's called life. Being human. Sorry it doesn't fit your aesthetic, precious.
Thought the first lovemaking scene is poorly handled and lacks credibility. Not enough tension and ambivalence between the two characters leading up to their first encounter. Have seen it on occasion since then and my opinion hasn't changed. The ending, however, is a different thing altogether. and much more believable and successful

Annie Proulx's story pretty much makes it clear that Lureen's story about Jack dying from an exploding tire was just a cover for the fact he was killed for being gay, as Ennis believed.

I was in high school when it came out. I went to the indie theatre 30 miles away to avoid being seen.
What I remember most: the love scene, they basically spit twice and shoved it in. Either Heath was hung like a pinky or Jake had a hole the size of the Lincoln Tunnel

Heath Ledger was a smoker in real life so doing so in the film was natural for him. He should have won the Oscar for this performance. The scene towards the end when Heath calls Anne to find out what happened to Jake - I totally believed (from her performance) that she Knew how Jake had died but made up the story about the tire accident in order to save face. It was shocking at the time and no one would have discussed it back in the 60s, esp in the midwest. Just watch her - her face indicates "oh, yeah, well, here's the bullshit story we made up."
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 16, 2022 4:14 AM

I also believed that Lureen's story was bullshit and Jack was actually murdered.
When Ennis went to visit Jack's parents, Jack's father said that Jack had separated from Lureen and was going to build a cabin on the parents' property with another man. That man was presumably the one who Jack met at the restaurant when they were both with their wives. It seems that Jack's secret got out and he was gay bashed.
