Watching Brokeback Mountain for the first time ever right now

I never was a huge fan of the 2 lead actors who peaked in my college years so I didn't bother previously.

The movie is on 1 of the Starz channels now

I must say the acting is pretty good so far.

It's annoying though that Heath Ledger in almost every scene is smoking. I get it, the film takes place in the 60s but ugh so unattractive.

Waiting for the love scenes. Heath looks older than mid 20s here. Jake brings a boyishness to his role

by Anonymousreply 67August 17, 2022 6:39 AM

lmao the tent scene! So Heath was the top

the weird hand placements when they were struggling on deciding to kiss was hilarious too

by Anonymousreply 1August 15, 2022 3:11 AM

Jake had his body looking really good in this role.

eew at Trumper psycho Randy Quaid being in this movie too

by Anonymousreply 2August 15, 2022 3:17 AM

Dude. How many movies that you’ve posted about numerous times are you gonna claim you’re watching for the first time? This is beyond the point of crazy and mental.

by Anonymousreply 3August 15, 2022 3:17 AM

R3 what are you talking about? There are other posters here too. I realize DL is pointless bitchery but this is nothing to get upset over, dear

by Anonymousreply 4August 15, 2022 3:21 AM

what kind of toxic dysfunction! They hookup 1 night then get into a fistfight the next day?

by Anonymousreply 5August 15, 2022 3:22 AM

Wake up OP!

by Anonymousreply 6August 15, 2022 3:33 AM

aww Jake got rejected at the bar by the middle aged guy he tried to pick up. I can't imagine what was like in the 60s especially in a rural area

by Anonymousreply 7August 15, 2022 3:35 AM

Anne Hathaway wow didn't expect to see her

by Anonymousreply 8August 15, 2022 3:36 AM

OP Watch the fucking Opera.

when Michelle spots Jake and Heath kissing!

but lmao what the hell is it with their violent and awkward hand placements? They can kiss without roughing up each other's faces.

by Anonymousreply 10August 15, 2022 3:46 AM

David Harbor (Hopper on "Stranger Things") is the bearded Texan flirting with Jake at a dance. Apparently he's the same character Jake brought to his family's ranch with a plan to turn it into a tourist trap.

by Anonymousreply 11August 15, 2022 3:46 AM

R4 you’re honestly so embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 12August 15, 2022 3:47 AM

Why don’t you watch the whole movie and then post your reaction, this isn’t really something you need to live stream

by Anonymousreply 13August 15, 2022 3:47 AM

R13 not to mention that the poster HAS POSTED ABOUT THIS MOVIE NUMEROUS TIMES IN THE PAST. Why he is pretending to watch it for the first time is beyond me.

by Anonymousreply 14August 15, 2022 3:49 AM

R14 you're totally wrong. I've never watched the movie nor posted threads about it before. There are other posters who post about watching famous movies or shows here all the time.

For whatever reason you're triggered and that's fine but it's on you and your issues to work out

by Anonymousreply 15August 15, 2022 3:50 AM

It's too bad they cut Heath's clearly visible full frontal, though I guess it would have been too noticeable that the other guy was Jake's stunt double.

R15 lmao dear God. When does it end with you

by Anonymousreply 17August 15, 2022 3:52 AM

R17 is obsessed but keep doing you, nutjob.

by Anonymousreply 18August 15, 2022 3:56 AM

R16 Jake looked good when he was naked in the river

by Anonymousreply 19August 15, 2022 3:57 AM

R18 no one here is a nut job but you. Who keeps making thread after thread of movies they’ve discussed to death along with the rest of us over the years claiming they watched it for the first time? What’s the point?

You’re all over Scream threads from earlier this year. Yet you claim you just watched that one too. Same with I Know

by Anonymousreply 20August 15, 2022 3:58 AM

Michelle plays the role of innocent and confused wife very well here

by Anonymousreply 21August 15, 2022 3:59 AM

R20 you're psycho. I've never posted in the Scream threads. That was other posters. Clearly this is fun for you to assume everything is 1 poster. Ok boy, go for it. You must be very bored to get so upset and be so wrong at the same time

by Anonymousreply 22August 15, 2022 4:00 AM

aww Jake's partial cry riding away from Heath in the truck

by Anonymousreply 23August 15, 2022 4:04 AM

Jake went cruising in Mexico? lol too bad they didn't show them fucking

by Anonymousreply 24August 15, 2022 4:05 AM

R22 YOU ARE EMBARRASSING YOURSELF. In a way that won’t dig you out of the hole you’ve dug long ago.

by Anonymousreply 25August 15, 2022 4:06 AM

love how Anne goes blonde halfway through the film

wow tense scene at Thanksgiving fighting about keeping the tv on/off "sit down you old son of a bitch! This is my house, this is my child and you are my guest. Sit down before I knock your ignorant ass into next week!" damn

by Anonymousreply 26August 15, 2022 4:08 AM

R25 must be a MAGA freak

by Anonymousreply 27August 15, 2022 4:08 AM

the fight between Michelle and Heath!

the landscape is beautiful

by Anonymousreply 28August 15, 2022 4:12 AM

It's a bit surprising there hasn't been a mainstream gay film since BM. I know ML came around a few years later, but that was an indie that kind of caught everyone by surprise. Unless I'm forgetting something?

by Anonymousreply 29August 15, 2022 4:15 AM

I was in my twenties when BBM came out and I saw it in the theater. I got a raging boner during the sex scene in the tent.

by Anonymousreply 30August 15, 2022 4:17 AM

R26 she was playing an older version. Idiot.

by Anonymousreply 31August 15, 2022 4:18 AM

What is "ML", R29?? Mother-in-law with Jane Fonda?

by Anonymousreply 32August 15, 2022 4:24 AM

R31 duh...it's still amusing

R32 must have never heard of "Moonlight"

by Anonymousreply 33August 15, 2022 4:33 AM

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry was pretty good

by Anonymousreply 34August 15, 2022 4:33 AM

[quote] Heath Ledger in almost every scene is smoking. I get it, the film takes place in the 60s but ugh so unattractive.

You millennials are so precious. I guess the next generation will be demanding that this movie be CANCELLED.

by Anonymousreply 35August 15, 2022 4:34 AM

R29 there certainly should be more gay mainstream movies but some issues keep happening:

1. you have some heteros screaming "why is every movie lgbtq these days?" even though that's obviously false. They are triggered by the inclusion of more gay roles. Some of them go further and refer to us "the alphabet people" and "gay agenda"

2. some gays are mad when straight actors play gay roles. Personally I don't mind some straights in gay roles since it helps to increase gay acceptance. I definitely don't want most gay roles going to straights though

3. There's also a debate about how much sexuality should be shown in lgbtq roles. Some want to lay it all there. Others say we're being pigeonholed and stereotyped as sex-crazed. I feel there's room for both sexual and non-sexual gay films

by Anonymousreply 36August 15, 2022 4:39 AM

As someone else who had no idea what ML was, thank you for the clarification. (And who abbreviates Moonlight as ML? Just spell out the whole thing. It's not that long.)

by Anonymousreply 37August 15, 2022 4:40 AM

sad that Jake's character dies and for about the last 30 minutes of the film or so Heath's character is facing the consequences of deciding not to be with him.

their last scene together was another toxic hodgepodge of flirting, tenderness, another fight and then cuddling. Some DL guys are still like that now though. Super clingy but you can't actually be partners with them since they don't want people to know

by Anonymousreply 38August 15, 2022 4:41 AM

how fitting Heath goes into Jake's closet to get the shirt he wore when they had 1 of their bloody brawls

touching symbolism

eh this film is kinda depressing. I get it, it was the 60s and taking place in the rural shithole areas. More realistic than a happy ending

by Anonymousreply 39August 15, 2022 4:43 AM

I think it's a clever angle to have Jake's character die of an accident but Heath is haunted by the vision of him being killed through gay-bashing. He's showing his insecurities and sense of guilt at the same time

by Anonymousreply 40August 15, 2022 4:47 AM

I thought it was boring. Can't even remember the plot except that it's about a couple of closeted cowboys who fuck awkwardly in a tent.

by Anonymousreply 41August 15, 2022 4:51 AM

^spoilers

by Anonymousreply 42August 15, 2022 4:51 AM

[quote] awkwardly

Very awkwardly… and crudely.

by Anonymousreply 43August 15, 2022 4:57 AM

I thought Heath Ledger deserved the Oscar for this film. His acting was brilliant. Jake's was just average in this film.

by Anonymousreply 44August 15, 2022 5:01 AM

Jake didn't need to 'act'.

He was just there and the camera loved him for it. No forced thespianism was required.

by Anonymousreply 45August 15, 2022 5:05 AM

yes I will say I think Heath was stronger here. He seemed more natural. Shocking his accent was even better. I don't know if Jake purposely didn't go for as thick of a country accent but his was more subdued. When they started yelling, Heath maintained his accent but Jake almost lost his and you could hear his regular speaking voice which was disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 46August 15, 2022 5:08 AM

R10 It's not obvious? They are deeply closeted and there is a societal prohibition on men touching each other any way except violently.

She gets a lot of hate which is a shame but I also liked Anne Hathaway in this, she stood out as more independent and with more backbone than Michelle, making it appropriate she married Jack who is the braver of the two guys.

Heath got the physical characterisation/body language of his character very well. I also accept there were legitimate acting reasons for the weird, mumbling, squeaking voice he chose to do but I could probably have done without that.

by Anonymousreply 47August 15, 2022 5:09 AM

[quote]Anne Hathaway wow didn't expect to see her

But what did you think about her tits?

by Anonymousreply 48August 15, 2022 5:10 AM

(from R47) hence the punch which is an early major plot point in the film and short story.

Speaking of which I also think Annie Proulx, the original story writer (worth reading!), deserves a lot of credit as a straight woman for managing very convincing portraits of these two closeted 1960s cowboys, though I think she rather goofed at the suggestion that Ennis' secret gayness made him only want anal sex from his wife.

by Anonymousreply 49August 15, 2022 5:13 AM

R48 Yeah they were nice, I can see why mostly-gay Jack would still be into her.

by Anonymousreply 50August 15, 2022 5:13 AM

R25, trolldar doesn't show that OP's posted about this before or in any Scream threads. Why do you think they have?

by Anonymousreply 51August 15, 2022 5:14 AM

[quote]It's too bad they cut Heath's clearly visible full frontal, though I guess it would have been too noticeable that the other guy was Jake's stunt double.

They didn't cut it. The scene with them jumping off the cliff is there but it is and always was a long shot. Those pics were leaked by paparazzi or someone on the set and Ledger was very upset they were leaked.

by Anonymousreply 52August 15, 2022 4:23 PM

This is the story by Annie Proulx.

"It's annoying though that Heath Ledger in almost every scene is smoking. I get it, the film takes place in the 60s but ugh so unattractive."

Sweet Gesu on a cracker. You know what? People smoke, they crap, they puke, they piss on themselves, they end their lives connected to a colostomy bag. It's called life. Being human. Sorry it doesn't fit your aesthetic, precious.

Thought the first lovemaking scene is poorly handled and lacks credibility. Not enough tension and ambivalence between the two characters leading up to their first encounter. Have seen it on occasion since then and my opinion hasn't changed. The ending, however, is a different thing altogether. and much more believable and successful

by Anonymousreply 54August 16, 2022 1:15 AM

I read the original story linked at R53.

And I've got a short attention span.

by Anonymousreply 55August 16, 2022 1:17 AM

Annie Proulx's story pretty much makes it clear that Lureen's story about Jack dying from an exploding tire was just a cover for the fact he was killed for being gay, as Ennis believed.

by Anonymousreply 56August 16, 2022 1:33 AM

[quote]Thought the first lovemaking scene is poorly handled and lacks credibility. Not enough tension and ambivalence between the two characters leading up to their first encounter.

I thought it was handled really well. They were finally in the tent together and Jack saw his chance.

by Anonymousreply 57August 16, 2022 1:34 AM

I was in high school when it came out. I went to the indie theatre 30 miles away to avoid being seen.

What I remember most: the love scene, they basically spit twice and shoved it in. Either Heath was hung like a pinky or Jake had a hole the size of the Lincoln Tunnel

by Anonymousreply 58August 16, 2022 1:36 AM

Gen Z's insight.

It's not meant to be attractive to you.

Not everything is porn.

by Anonymousreply 60August 16, 2022 1:46 AM

Smoking was very prevalent in the time period the film takes place, it's historically accurate.

by Anonymousreply 61August 16, 2022 1:53 AM

Wake up OP!!

I know you are only 40 minutes in and the whole thing boring as all hell, and you've dozed off.

Try and stick it out to see how the rest of it is just as boring.

You can then move on to much more entertaining gay themed films.

by Anonymousreply 62August 16, 2022 1:58 AM

Heath Ledger was a smoker in real life so doing so in the film was natural for him. He should have won the Oscar for this performance. The scene towards the end when Heath calls Anne to find out what happened to Jake - I totally believed (from her performance) that she Knew how Jake had died but made up the story about the tire accident in order to save face. It was shocking at the time and no one would have discussed it back in the 60s, esp in the midwest. Just watch her - her face indicates "oh, yeah, well, here's the bullshit story we made up."

by Anonymousreply 63August 16, 2022 4:14 AM

I also believed that Lureen's story was bullshit and Jack was actually murdered.

When Ennis went to visit Jack's parents, Jack's father said that Jack had separated from Lureen and was going to build a cabin on the parents' property with another man. That man was presumably the one who Jack met at the restaurant when they were both with their wives. It seems that Jack's secret got out and he was gay bashed.

by Anonymousreply 64August 16, 2022 4:25 AM

[quote]I also believed that Lureen's story was bullshit and Jack was actually murdered.

Didn't they show it? I seem to remember a scene where they showed her brothers beating him up. Did I just fill in the blanks in my head with an imaginary scene?

by Anonymousreply 65August 16, 2022 4:27 AM

It was her cousins.

The urbane, intelligent posters of DL have moved on. It's a sad state of affairs when an intelligent discussion has to take place on Reddit.
