Sorry, it's awesome to spoil kids and subtly or not-so-subtly help guide them into adulthood without being responsible for them 24/7.

I don’t speak to my nieces and nephews anymore…they don’t get along with their father, my brother, so they snub me by default. I never did those kids wrong, never. I loved them. But they are closer to their mother’s family. And they are awful people. I try to shrug my shoulders and move on, but it’s painful to deal with.

I am an uncle and I happen to be gay, but the two have nothing to do with each other.

My nephew is 2 years old, adorable and relatively easy to handle. I will soon be uncle to another nephew, he'll be delivered in January.

Being an uncle is nice. I give the child back to my brother the moment it starts crying, needs a new diaper, etc.

All the fun, none of the obligations.

I love being an uncle. I could never be a father though.

Since I've been an adult, I've only had two small presents and separate occasions for anything including birthdays and Christmas.

I first heard this portmanteau on an episode of Modern Family. Sounds like some enterprising grifter has taken the suggestion and run with it.

R12, your story sounds just like my husband's. He has three nieces whom he doted on all through their childhood, never missing a birthday OR holiday. When his brother and sister-in-law divorced, it was so acrimonious that the older two turned against their father, and us by default. We only have a relationship with the youngest.

R23 I feel your pain. My niece and nephews only deal with folks who do something for them…just the way of things these days. I’m probably guilty of being like that too.
