This is a depressing episode. I thought he'd ask Ross Douthout about his fanatical anti abortion views and what he thinks about the Kansas referendum, etc, and whether he thinks his side has gone overboard. I thought he might discuss what is going on on the nation's campuses intelligently, but it just seems the usual coot nonsense about These Kids Today! Is he just a sad old coot at this point, or is there still hope for him?
Bill Maher, just a coot at this point?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 21, 2022 10:07 PM |
And what the fuck with treating Piers Morgan like a serious thinker? What is this shit?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 13, 2022 4:26 AM |
But of course, Bill Maher has to do his fucking health coot thing first and foremost. We get it Bill. You are smarter than any doctor, you asshole. We all get it. You are the ultimate crank, and that is kind of okay, but sometimes other shit is going on as well. Same with the terrible trauma of the woke. Yeah, you aren't completely wrong, but you are kind of a dick about shit, and it really gets annoying. Ask more intelligent questions and maybe you will have a more intelligent show.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 13, 2022 4:34 AM |
And I am going to keep posting on my own thread, because I'm bored, but seriously, I am actually disappointed in Bill Maher lately. I think he is still an intelligent comic, but he just has his cootish needs lately, and they are overwhelming him. He still has the ability to analyze and to point out crazy stuff, but he is just overwhelmed by his own personal issues about cootish nonsense, and it is kind of depressing to keep seeing that, week after week after week.

I had to turn it off. He is mentally unwell.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 13, 2022 5:03 AM |
He's really gone right-wing lately. My MAGA parents suddenly love him. He still says he's liberal, but he's starting to sound like a libertarian, which is really just a Republican who doesn't want to admit it.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 13, 2022 5:21 AM |
He's slowly been losing his mind over the last few years. The anti-science, anti-doctor shit is some of the worst of many worsts.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 13, 2022 5:35 AM |
that's the problem with these libertarians. They always start drifting into the rightwing camp. I don't normally think of pot as a gateway drug, but in politics, it is. they think they are free cause they smoke pot, so they aren't like those uptight evangelicals, but then they find themselves dabbling in wingnut nonsense and then they are hooked.

by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 13, 2022 5:42 AM |
What annoys me is all the hooting and whooping everytime he says something. It's like he is so hysterical every time he opens his mouth. It's obnoxious....obviously his staff is instructed to make a huge fuss, like it's coming from the audience. He's not that funny.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 13, 2022 5:51 AM |
Yeah, I haven't watched his show in over a year.
He's just about turned into a Trumper at this point.
He's a 60ish straight white man who's been coasting on privilege his whole life but thinks he's earned some sort of place in society where he can crap on others but no one can dare disagree with him.
I've always had periodic problems with him. He says racist and homophobic shit and now he's anti-trans. When I was watching I could see some of his more liberal "regulars" becoming somewhat alarmed at some of the shit he was starting to say.
Not to mention the couple of times he had to walk back a statement because of a backlash (the "house Negro" comment for example). He seemed both very scared and pissed off about having alienated his audience. I don't think he cares about that anymore and is going full bore bloviator.
Fuck him.

The right wing has the more lucrative audience. Liberals aren't the "shut up, and take my money!" type of folk. You can make serious bank by pandering to the right wing idiot followers.
They are the ones who like to listen to criticizing damn Liberal Cancel Culture and "doing your own research" and knowing science and biology better than doctors and scientists. Liberals are more likely to trust information from legit sources and don't fall for any snake oil sales pitch. I mean, Alex Jones makes millions selling his snake oil to the rubes while screaming and shouting whatever the idiots want to hear and believe. Liberals aren't driven to buy merch and pills for political purposes. The closest Liberals may go for is marijuana and ayahuasca. You can't trick 'em into buying T-shirts and hats for political messaging (that's more of a sport's thing).

I give him a lot of slack for "Religulous" and also he came to Jackson, Mississippi, and did a standup show - then he did appeared for free at a Democratic fund-raiser and meet-and-greet. Guess it was 10 years ago or so.
And sometimes he's funny. But yeah, he's difficult to sit through - and those Republican guests! I gave up watching him years ago. He seems to esp love Ann Coulter (or used to.) Isn't he also an anti-vaxxer? i.e. nut. But aren't most Hollywooders, one way or another?

He’s at his best when he’s criticizing politicians. Otherwise everything out of his mouth lately is a right wing talking point. How many times are we gonna hear him complain about masks or Covid precautions? How many times will he complain about cancel culture and wokeness? And how many times will he bitch about obesity? He’s not even totally wrong in all of his points but the frequency with which he brings them up and the lack of nuance he’s frequently applying to these topics is what’s made him sound like a coot.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 13, 2022 2:39 PM |
This week he was ranting about how doctors are arrogant and don’t know everything so we should do our own research and not trust them. His anti-expertise obsession is very MAGA. And he was complaining that we’re “not allowed to say” that Covid came from a Chinese lab while saying so on a national television platform.

We get this same thread every week. Bill Maher remains an old school liberal. The only thing that has changed is what it means to be a liberal. He's not voting for republicans, he just thinks stupid shit is stupid regardless of which side of the aisle it's coming from. There are many shows where you can watch reporters and pundits confirm every single bias that you have. That's not his show and he's not going to change. That's never been what he's about. I get it, you don't like that he picks at the scabs of some of your sacred cows and that he allows voices on his show that you don't like, but there are options for you.
Ultimately, I think what drives Maher and some others crazy is that they were liberal and remain liberal and now you have some uninformed pissants trying to cast them as the bad guys. You know like trying to paint Joe Biden, of all people, as an out of touch racist because he happened to be a liberal democrat when the democratic party still had a number of dixiecrats who he had to work with to get something done.

It’s so absurd every time without fail there is a BM thread on here you guys cherry pick whatever he says that may not fit your orthodoxy, and then conveniently ignore the other 80 percent of the show (last night is a perfect example) where he’s defending Biden (against that idiot 22 year old guest), and “economic liberalism,” more generally.
But just because he has a bone to pick with certain ridiculous things suddenly he’s a turncoat. Ok then.

Yup--this is why most of them can't be relied on. Most libertarians will always support the Republican party over Democrats. They care more about tax cuts versus all else. Libertarians are just republicans who were losers in high school.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 10, 2022 3:10 PM |
Bill Maher is a libertarian contrarian jerk. He is not a Republican. As much I disagree and even resent much of what he says (and what he doesn't say) that seems anti-Democrat, 80 percent of his conversation implicitly belittles Republicans. His foundational thought is "Republicans are idiots and dangerous for following a demented clown," which most of us agree with.
I think he has a few specific problems:
1. He is not an in-demand standup comic and he goes to a lot of Republican states where the pickings are slim. He talks to his gushing fans there. Like a politician, his ego has been blown up by the flattery of his sycophants, and many of them are Republicans who act starstruck when they meet him and it makes him sympathetic to them.
2. He used to be liberal in a lot of ways, and more libertarian light. Times have changed and now he's far more conservative. But he has no idea. He believes he's super progressive. He won't shut up about marijuana. He still talks about the Playboy mansion. He's sexist and thinks he's not. He longs for an old white America that no longer exists—but he has no idea this is not what liberal people think nowadays. So he talks to his audience as if everyone agrees and has common understanding, but he's ignorant about his ignorance.
3. He has gotten richer and richer and in doing so, he's completely out of touch with people who aren't. He ranted against higher education (with his degree from Columbia University) and he thinks the alternative to college is blue collar work, and he imagines blue collar workers as the people he saw in his childhood—Irish, Italian, Jewish immigrants and their families. He doesn't interact with people of color other than wealthy elite ones and he doesn't get who the working class is or that they aspire to advance, and not to pick strawberries and work in factories and on his $150k sportscars.
4. He has also been radicalized. He thinks in polarized terms just like many American people now do. It began with politics, but he makes the mistake of applying the good/bad dichotomy to everything. He complained in response to Ross Douthat's Lyme experience that individual everyday people are smarter about medicine than doctors are. I also had Lyme and my experience was nearly identical to Douthat's. It is a very real phenomenon. But Maher is bonkers. Doctors do not know everything, but they are not the idiots he presented them as being. My father's heart was taken out, its pipes cleaned, and it was put back and he was walking around six hours later. He had a life-threatening abdominal aortic aneurysm and doctors saved his life. My uncle had a brain aneurysm 20 years ago and had like a 2% chance of survival due to medical interventions. Maher has an all-or-nothing, self-superior attitude about everything and it is a fatal flaw. It could even kill him, although I suspect he has a lot of renowned medical specialists on his rolodex despite his condemnations.
5. He has abandoned what he used to care about. Decades ago, he was an environmental and animal-rights activist. He talked about climate change constantly. The last he had anything to say about it was when he bitched for a year about California's bureaucracy delaying him installing solar panels on his house. They were approved and he stopped talking about it. Now he is all about political gossip, attacking cancel culture, weed weed weed edgy weed!, and telling liberal people they are wrong about how they go about talking to Republicans. He has degraded into a grumpy old man with a lot of prejudices and a closed mind.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 10, 2022 3:40 PM |
R52 He is right though about how liberal people are wrong about how they go about talking to Republicans. While it’s true that many Republicans are idiots, you don’t get people on your side by screaming at them and calling them “stupid.”

I went to a taping of Politically Incorrect years ago and remember that Jimmie "Dynomite!" Walker was one of the guests and that afterwards we went to the Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles on Sunset and Gower. I haven't watched much of Bill Maher in at least a cool, smooth decade.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 21, 2022 9:04 PM |
Well R54, if they are calling us “libtards,” then they don’t sound very bright. The reactionary response is to get angry and scream back at them, but is that the intelligent response? How many well-rounded, highly educated people do you know who get angry and scream “fucktard” at people? If you want to win, you have to be smarter. I know you may find this hard to believe, but not all right-wingers are evil. Many of them are just misinformed, dumb, and easily led. Sometimes you can get through to those people, but you don’t do it by screaming at them. You do it by being better than them.

He actually did bring up the solar panel thing again this week, although I think it was in Overtime r52. You can tell he's still pissed about it all, and maybe justifiably. But too often I think he is just driven these days by "what pisses me off," which as someone pointed out really gets into Andy Rooney territory. He hates getting older, and probably really hates that some 20-somethings think he's just too damn old for them, so we need to hear about ageism a lot more than before. I get the feeling he hit on some 25-year-old model and she just laughed him off. On top of that, woke college kids hate him, especially on twitter, so that has to be a whole saga every damn week. If he just would get that woke twitter is all about having endless and moronic grievances and laugh it off he'd be a lot happier. But with him, apparently, it hurts.
And damn, he really, really, really didn't like Julia Ioffe on this week's episode. She did make some joke about age, I think at some point, but even before that, it seemed he just was coming in hot and not liking her. Seemed like he much prefers the conservative country singer and the ultra-establishment historian (both of whom I'm fine with too, but still).
