What Musical Instrument Annoys You The Most And Why

Baritone Saxophone, It just makes an awful intrusive sound. I love jazz but not when it features this instrument. Sorry, Gerry

Any saxophone

by Anonymousreply 1August 12, 2022 11:58 PM

A gently strummed acoustic guitar. It just sucks. I hear it at the beginning of a song and I know I can skip it.

by Anonymousreply 2August 12, 2022 11:59 PM

Piano. I don't mind it in popular music, but hate it in classical music, it's all clanging and clattering noise.

by Anonymousreply 3August 12, 2022 11:59 PM

Bagpipes

by Anonymousreply 4August 12, 2022 11:59 PM

I don’t mind baritone sax, but alto and soprano are like fingernails on the chalkboard.

I grew up with my dad playing Charlie Parker and John Coltrane and god that stuff is awful. Tenor is beautiful sounding though.

by Anonymousreply 5August 13, 2022 12:03 AM

Bagpipes and saxophone I can understand as being annoying, but acoustic guitar or classical piano? Do you people sucker punch strangers who smile at you the wrong way?

by Anonymousreply 6August 13, 2022 12:04 AM

Harpsichord

by Anonymousreply 7August 13, 2022 12:05 AM

R6 They don't leave the house

by Anonymousreply 8August 13, 2022 12:05 AM

Flutes; it's the high pitch. They are fine, when used sparingly. The music, in TV shows used flutes to express the childlike innocence and virginal characters. It is so irritating.

by Anonymousreply 9August 13, 2022 12:08 AM

Kazoo

by Anonymousreply 10August 13, 2022 12:08 AM

R7, I love the harpsichord and Baroque music.

by Anonymousreply 11August 13, 2022 12:09 AM

Bagpipes are considered a musical instrument? I thought they were meant to keep wildcats away while roaming the moors.

by Anonymousreply 12August 13, 2022 12:11 AM

I know it's not an instrument, but mariachis. When I'm at a restaurant with them, I tip $5 for the group to move on.

by Anonymousreply 13August 13, 2022 12:11 AM

The groaning, lugubrious sound of the organ—it’s usually hideous.

by Anonymousreply 14August 13, 2022 12:12 AM

The piccolo

by Anonymousreply 15August 13, 2022 12:12 AM

I don't like the sound of acoustic guitar, either, especially when someone tunes one. Reminds me of my brother. He was not kind.

by Anonymousreply 16August 13, 2022 12:12 AM

The armonica. It can drive you mad.

by Anonymousreply 17August 13, 2022 12:17 AM

[quote]I love the harpsichord and Baroque music.

Then you are welcome to it.

by Anonymousreply 18August 13, 2022 12:19 AM

Harpsichord and steel drums. Loathe.

by Anonymousreply 19August 13, 2022 12:20 AM

Clarinet, as a (former) player

by Anonymousreply 20August 13, 2022 12:22 AM

Didgeridoo.

Indigenous wind instrument or a tree that was minding its own business that got turned into an annoying sound maker?

by Anonymousreply 21August 13, 2022 12:25 AM

Once in a great while, I can briefly tolerate an alto flute. Briefly.

The rest can be jettisoned into a pit of fire

by Anonymousreply 22August 13, 2022 12:30 AM

As someone who played alto and bari sax in concert band, marching band, and jazz band and bassoon in wind ensemble, orchestra, and small ensembles from sixth grade all the way through college, I love them.

The fingerings are the same across all saxophones. But it took a bit to get used to playing bari, because I came from alto, and with its deep resonance, it felt like it was rattling my skull the first few times. And because I'm a shorty, I had to develop a bit of endurance when marching it. But I love it, and it's my favorite saxophone I've played. Hands down.

I'd LOVE to play a bass and contrabass sax, and contrabassoon (oddly, we didn't have a contrabassoon in college, but didn't really have anyone to play it, though I'd have gladly doubled before I ascended to principal).

That said, it annoys me that violin is SO fucking overrated. A violin is a lovely thing, but it's not that interesting to me. I can't think of a less interesting or overrated instrument. The triangle is more interesting. But SO MANY PEOPLE play it, and I couldn't care less. Boring, boring, boring.

Here's a favorite bari moment from one of my favorite pieces. We played it in high school, but I was on second alto at the time. It's a riot and a lot of fun to play, and hear.

Four-way tie between harmonica, accordion, clarinet, and soprano sax. I’d add the harpsichord, but only for baroque music, because I like it when it’s played funky.

I luv wailin’ on me ‘armonica.

I’m sure I’d drive you violently insane R17, because I play a style called blues harp which can rub some peoples’ nerves raw.

by Anonymousreply 25August 13, 2022 12:53 AM

R23. That's just awful, awful, awful, awful

by Anonymousreply 26August 13, 2022 12:56 AM

The violin or any other such as a solo instrument is like nails on a chalkboard to me. However, when played in multiples within an orchestra, it is my most favorite musical sound. StrinG - no! StringS - yes, yes, YES!

R20 - Duke Ellington's "Jump For Joy" clarinet solo, Jimmy Hamilton. Incredible playing!

My neighbor is a very talented pianist and cellist. I will GLADLY walk on tenderfoot so I don't disturb when he is practicing. Every so often he likes to bring out a drum machine to do some beats and either the sample or rhythm is so loud and boring it is excruciating. I would gladly pay my sexy, talented neighbor money to practice jazz on the piano and leave the drum machine to a professional. However, practice makes perfect, and if I can hear him he can hear me, and I'm sure I've done something annoying in the past. Live and let live.

by Anonymousreply 31August 13, 2022 1:15 AM

Drums.

by Anonymousreply 32August 13, 2022 1:17 AM

R25 Sounds like you have indeed been listening to the armonica. Careful! It'll do that to your mind.

^^ I thought “armonica” was a typo. My bad. I should’ve checked on the word before posting.

by Anonymousreply 34August 13, 2022 1:22 AM

Is there a difference between fiddle and violin? My mom(who played violin) said it was in the way you played a violin that it became a fiddle. Anyway I hate the fiddle and anything associated with bluegrass music.

And for the people who dislike violin, no live for Stéphane Grappelli? His stuff with Django was great.

by Anonymousreply 35August 13, 2022 1:23 AM

I kinda dig the skin flute.

by Anonymousreply 36August 13, 2022 1:27 AM

Consider yourself lucky, R29. Whenever I’m gang-raped by hillbillies, “Yakety Sax” is played!

by Anonymousreply 37August 13, 2022 1:42 AM

The penis. No matter how hard I blow into one I can never get it to make a sound.

by Anonymousreply 38August 13, 2022 1:46 AM

R6 Too many crappy singer-songwriters running around. If you're strumming basic chords I'm not interested.

by Anonymousreply 39August 13, 2022 1:52 AM

Baritone and alto sax are great, can't stand soprano. Soprano sax is screechy.
