If my ex was a delusional, drunken, crackhead I wouldn't be going to that funeral nor speak highly of that person. Sure, he he had a sad upbringing, we all did, but we don't all go speeding at 90 mph while being drunk and cracked out of our mind. Did Merv ever actively work against the interests of gay people? Did he openly advocate for gay people having their rights taken away or for them to be killed, beaten, or imprisoned?

While I'm grateful to every gay person who was brave enough to come out of the closet and fight for the rights we have, unless you actively worked against advancing gay rights, I do not begrudge anyone staying in the closet, especially folks who grew up in a very different world and watched close friends die during the AIDS crisis.

The funeral will be hard enough on Heche's kids as it is without it being turned into an even bigger media circus. And for what? To appease Internet scolds who will find fault with anything DeGeneres does anyway?
