HELP WANTED!!!
Where did all the workers go?
Was it because they ran off the immigrants?
Was it the hundreds od thousands of customer-facing employees dropping dead of Covid?
Maybe it was the recognition of a decline in workplace conditions and antagonistic corporate environments?
What will it take to get them back?

[quote]Where did all the workers go?
Oh, they're just homeless now because of the greedy landlords that are jacking up their rent even though their property taxes aren't going up. They couldn't sell their 300k house for a million so now all of the "workers" will have to compensate for that.

What are these companies doing to earn these record profits. Where is that extra money coming from?
Everything is out of wack. Covid has been over for a year

We need to open the borders and bring back legal immigration to fill in for all the dead people that republicans killed.

Most legal immigrants are highly educated and financially connected and aren't too keen on asking you if you'd some fries with your order.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 12, 2022 6:40 AM

The republicans always block legal immigration. Why doesn’t anyone take them seriously when they say they are tough on immigrants when they are not. They block reform to keep the status quo.
If deplroables would make the connection, voting democrats would lead to comprehensive immigration reform, which is what deplroables really want.
Deplorables need to vote democrat this time.

Deplorables often claim that “both sides” are the same.

I love the narrative that receiving 3000 dollars ONCE made people never want to work again. For fuckssake!
Those jobs no one wants pay SHIT. The companies are making record profits, these jobs do not pay enough for the people who take them to rent an apartment, let alone a house (have you SEEN rental prices, even in small, former low cost of living, areas!) If a job will not let you live independently, and you have to live with family or friends, there is less motivation to take a job you will hate.
This is what happens when Capitalism reaches the end, kids. The billionaires fight with one another to mine Greenland, and the rest of us sweat in our overpriced homes.

Over a million people have died in the Covid epidemic and nobody seems to be keeping statistics on how many survivors have long term disabilities making it impossible for them to do the kind of labor intensive that are now in high demand.
The crushing of labor unions, rollback of government protections and draconian anti-immigrant policies have not had the desired effect of creating a compliant American workforce willing to do anything for whatever employers are willing to pay. That’s what employers are crying about. They’d have plenty of options if they were willing to offer a living wage and humane working conditions, but too many employers are on this sadistic maniacal Elon Musk trip.

So many have retired earliest than planned, as per my financial advisor.
And I understand that. Why would anyone want to deal with the "Karens" and their spoiled "kiddos" or the constant risk of getting turned into headless goo via an AR-15 by a White Nationalist or incel, for minimum wage or just a little above AND risk getting COVID...when you could just leave the work force a bit earlier than planned?
Why stay in shit jobs where the public treats you like garbage, your wages are low, and you risk your life on the daily if you you don't have to? To make others happy or comfortable? Oh, my sides!

People will compete for jobs that offer good pay, good benefits, and good working conditions.
$9/hr, 34.5 hours per week so they don't have to offer benefits, incredibly inconvenient hours that change from week to week, no possibility of advancement? Of course nobody wants that.

It was stated by many when covid panic caused federal and state governments to lock down economies that things would follow 2008 recession/financial market collapse. That is a good number of people laid off or otherwise made unemployed or left job market would not return.
US economy was and still is already coping with wave of Boomers reaching retirement age and either leaving workforce, or cutting back. Covid convinced many time to go was now if they could make it work financially.
Those still active in workforce, or would like to be find 2022 landscape vastly different than one two or three years ago. Good number just cannot adapt, and or do not have skill sets for work that is available.
As others mentioned no not under estimate how many are waiting things out and living off what in many cases was a substantial amount of federal assistance.
Some received > $30k in various forms (enhanced unemployment, stimulus checks, rent assistance, etc...) and managed to hang onto quite a lot of that money.
Persons who packed up and moved back home or otherwise aren't paying rent can live off that nest egg for some time.

R48 That's a big part of it, I think - the pandemic making quite a few people realize that not working is better than what they have to deal with working. It's a trade off but if the trade off of not-working is better than working, it's clear that employers have cut things to the bone too much. They need to make working nicer and/or more financially lucrative.

I was an RN, and then went on to become a physician's assistant. I retired just before Covid-19 hit the fan. I received an insane amount of phone calls from the hospital that I had worked at for several years, asking, then begging me to come back, even just part time. As if...
The biggest problem in the workforce today, at least from my perspective, is that the harder you work and the better you perform, more and more is demanded from you, while the lazy ones who spend most of their time doing little or nothing, continue to do nothing, and were the first ones to quit their jobs because the stress of doing nothing evidently was too much to handle.
Thanks, but no thanks, I'm done, and just enjoying my simple retired lifestyle. I'm in good health, keep active, and now have time to do the things that I never was able to make time for, mainly because I did more than my share of overtime. Why on earth would I give that up?

"No, lots of people were fired because it's easy to fire people in the U.S. ..."
Totally ignorant statement.
Yes, most states in USA are at will employment, but firing employees for no valid reason means they are entitled to unemployment which employers must pay.
Unless an employee does something really horrible (which would vary by state laws) to fire them and not pay unemployment employer has to prove they were let go by their own fault. This usually means establishing a paper trail (being written up), so when an employee is terminated employer can appeal any decision to award UI.
As for balance of your post yes, employers of all sorts have realized in past they treated employees like shit, so that's why people are leaving and or recruitment is a chore.
Problem is not every employment sector can offer lavish compensation packages, and jobs simply are what they are.

R55 compared to a lot of other countries it really is a lot easier to fire people in the U.S.
What's your realistic explanation for why so many people don't want to return to work? I mean, they had those jobs before the pandemic but are not returning. Come on.

R55, you're wrong. Employers pay into unemployment insurance on every worker. It's no skin off their nose when they fire someone because they've already paid their unemployment insurance. Do you think they directly pay the person they fired?

Does anyone actually read their employee handbook when they sign on ?
It's not unusual ( at least in the US ) for a company to state outright that they don't actually need a reason to fire you. And it's all perfectly legal because it's stated clearly in writing. They are protected, and no unemployment benefits for you because you agreed to this when you signed on the dotted line.
Sadly, the wrong people are always protected.

They have all become influencers. Most of the people that died from covid were too old to work in the first place. 85+ were the majority of deaths. Long Covid might be part of it but also women had to stay home with the kids and we haven't recovered them yet. When the kids go back to school there will probably be more workers.

My gawd some of the people working are so horrendously awful at their jobs and they don't give a shit because they know they won't be fired. I was at the supermarket today and this new checker was soooo annoyed that she had to stop leaning over the counter staring at her phone to scan my items. She was so morbidly obese she could barely even stand up. She didn't say a single word to me. She just stood there frowning, didn't ever even look at me, or announce how much my total was. She just very slowly scanned the items and stood there. I didn't put my credit card in for a minute because she didn't even press the fucking button that brings up the total after discounts for my frequent buyer card. Finally I asked her if she was ready for me to pay. She still said nothing and just pushed the button that readied the payment terminal. I paid and she just went back to her phone without saying a word. I put my stuff in my bag myself. I told her "thank you!" while I rolled my eyes to the back of my head. I'm sure she is busy complaining on social media at how awful she is treated by her employer and customers, and such a victim to the horrors of corporate America and the lack of opportunity to get paid more. I didn't get her name, but have this to say: "fuck you, you fucking obese bitter nasty sea cow! good luck with your section 8 housing voucher and food stamps because with will NEVER succeed in life with that NASTY, bitter, disinterested attitude"
