I've never seen Ellen's talk show (because I loathe daytime television) so I don't know what that show was like, but if you ever need to be cheered up, I highly recommend watching her HBO special from 2003 "Here and Now". What Ellen said is fine. Anne left her 22 years ago and trashed Ellen in one of her last interviews. As far as I know, Ellen has never negatively commented on Anne publicly.

I actually respect that Ellen has chosen her words carefully so as not to lie just to "be polite." And I say that as somebody who didn't watch her show and thinks her behavior during it was pretty repugnant. But I can't fault he for her response to the death of somebody who dumped her more than two decades ago and who had recently spoken badly of her to the press.

Exactly, R60. These Hollywood celebs are highly competitive. In this situation, you have 2 female comics. Both successful, but still one is way more successful than the other. I like Kathy but like many in Hollywood she is notoriously jealous of those who are more successful than her and has a history of trying to tear them down.

Because the woman has now died. Before that, my assumption is that Ellen (rightfully) didn't want the media to sensationally make the story about her, especially while Anne's children and loved ones (who this tragedy *is* about) were likely in anguish over their mother's condition. Now that she's died, Ellen is respectfully giving condolences to the grieving loved ones. In short, this wasn't about Ellen, it's about Anne and her kids, and Ellen knows that.

For that reason alone, it would have been in Ellen’s best interest to make a brief, compassionate statement up-n learning about the accident. She could have had her assistant push it out under Ellen’s account. I really wish celebrities would be better ambassadors of civilized, compassionate behavior. It would only improve our society overall. Missed opportunity, Ellen.

When SJP sent condolences to Kim Cattrall regarding her missing brother, Kim was angry and publicly humiliated SJP for being "phony" and injecting herself back into her (Kim's) life.. When Valerie Bertinelli expresses grief over Eddie Van Halen's death, many people complain that she's making it all about her and that she's being unkind to his wife since he and Valerie were long divorced when he died and he had remarried. So, the public doesn't always see public statements as appropriate when people have split apart or broken up. Anne and Ellen were together only 3 years and broke up 22 years ago. Anne has been married and in other relationships and has had 2 kids since then. Ellen had other relationships and is now married. 22 years is another lifetime. I don't get why anyone is expected to comment on someone they once had a relationship with. Most people have hard feelings when a relationship ends and most try to put it all behind them.

I hate this thing people have now for examining and criticising what a celebrity does or does not say on social media in response to certain things. Black Lives Matter was an example: they were deeming people who didn’t make a public comment in support of it as racist. If someone dies, and they don’t post a long, gushing eulogy then they’re indifferent and heartless. Some people just, wisely, choose not to live their lives and express every thought and feeling they have on social media. When you’re in the public eye I can particularly understand that.
