The Pointer Sisters - "Dare Me"

Perhaps their most overlooked hit, "Dare Me" combines a layered sound with a memorable melody to make a song that still holds up four decades later. The music video was certainly distinctive, too.

DL has plenty of love for Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and even Pat Benatar, but surely The Pointer Sisters were every bit as hot in their day.

The song has a bit of accidental fame through beloved DJ Casey Kasem. He had a famous outburst of profanity on tape, cussing up a storm about a "dead dog dedication" only moments after coming off a replay of "Dare Me." He thought the song was too up-tempo to lead into a sad story about a little kid's dead pet.

I forgot about this song. The music video is great!

by Anonymousreply 1August 10, 2022 12:58 AM

This song and Twist My Arm are faves from the Contact album

by Anonymousreply 2August 10, 2022 12:59 AM

"Dare Me" is great but I actually rate some of their Blue Thumb material higher. "How Long (Betcha Got A Chick On The Side" is their best song.

by Anonymousreply 3August 10, 2022 1:04 AM

I have loved em since the seventies. "Slow Hand".

Love Ruth's hairdo!

by Anonymousreply 6August 10, 2022 1:24 AM

Whitney got her dance ability from Dionne.

by Anonymousreply 7August 10, 2022 1:26 AM

I love June's gruff style, interspersed with some clean soprano sounds.

by Anonymousreply 8August 10, 2022 1:28 AM

Love these ladies. If they’re reading, Hi Ladies! Hope everyone is well. 😘

by Anonymousreply 9August 10, 2022 1:30 AM

They’re all dead, r9.

by Anonymousreply 10August 10, 2022 1:57 AM

No. Only June, of the trio, is dead. Bonnie, of the original foursome, is also dead.

by Anonymousreply 11August 10, 2022 2:03 AM

Ruth Pointer's memoir is a great read. Those girls loved to PARTY back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 12August 10, 2022 2:12 AM

Love these ladies and their music takes me back to the 80s more than any other group or performer. their energy, fun and massive talent. June was my favorite. I saw them live in Boston at concertson the common in The 80s along with Stephanie Mills. and Marvin Hagler was introduced from the crowd...it was very 80s. Im not sure if it was the same concert? jermaine Jackson came out and sang a song too.

by Anonymousreply 13August 10, 2022 2:13 AM

Jermaine sang do what you do...a GREAT song. They all were great live.

by Anonymousreply 14August 10, 2022 2:16 AM

They had so many hits, amazing catalog of songs. You don't see talent like this anymore.

Some of the Richard Perry productions, I find antiseptic.

I loved "Automatic."

I saw them twice, once at some outdoor venue in the summer, and once in Las Vegas. They put on an amazing show. I loved them.

by Anonymousreply 18August 10, 2022 2:31 AM

The production is blah but I've always loved the trio lead of "I Need You."

by Anonymousreply 19August 10, 2022 2:31 AM

Legendary divas! True chameleons!

by Anonymousreply 20August 10, 2022 2:31 AM

This thread got me thinking about groups where at least three of the members got a turn at lead vocals on a hit song. The Pointers had Ruth (Neutron Dance), June (Jump), and Anita (Slow Hand), as well as a minor hit where all three got a verse (I Need You). The only other groups I can think of were Chicago with Peter Cetera (Hard Habit To Break), Robert Lamm (Saturday In The Park) and the guy whose name I forget (he killed himself playing Russian roulette) (Color My World). I believe the three members of Three Dog Night also each sang lead on hit songs. Any others?

by Anonymousreply 21August 10, 2022 2:33 AM

Did Mamas and Papas not all have leads?

by Anonymousreply 22August 10, 2022 2:34 AM

En Vogue alternated leads on hits, e.g. Free Your Mind.

by Anonymousreply 23August 10, 2022 2:35 AM

The Beatles all had hits, right? Ringo was Yellow Submarine, of course.

by Anonymousreply 24August 10, 2022 2:37 AM

Oh, I loved "Dare Me!" Great song! Great group!

by Anonymousreply 25August 10, 2022 2:45 AM

Good song, but sadly their last hit.

Their sound was everywhere for a few years and then it just burned out.

by Anonymousreply 26August 10, 2022 2:48 AM

Dare Me was my getting ready song when I was a club kid/drag queen in the early to mid 90's. I would play it over and over again while painting my face because it got me in the mood to be an aggressive and saucy bitch out at the clubs. I DARE YOU TO NOT FALL IN LOVE WITH ME boys!

by Anonymousreply 27August 10, 2022 4:17 PM

I love the album they did after this "hot together"

by Anonymousreply 29August 13, 2022 7:37 AM

Dare Me was a moderate hit but coming off their blockbuster hits like Jump, He's So Shy, I'm So Excited, Slow Hand, etc. it was a disappointment. I personally liked their 50s inspired Should I do it a lot more and it's pretty much totally forgotten.

"Dare Me" just missed the top 10. It really takes me back to summer 1985.

[quote]The Beatles all had hits, right? Ringo was Yellow Submarine, of course.

Yes. Many examples for John and Paul, "Yellow Submarine" for Ringo, and George's "Something" was a bit hit.

The Band also had three distinctive-sounding lead singers (Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel), and Robbie Robertson sang lead once in a while, although he was never much of a singer. They have a lot of classic songs, but they weren't really a hit-singles group in their day.

Did June show muff at 0.56?

Any fans of June’s solo albums?

Baby Sister - 1983

June Pointer - 1989

by Anonymousreply 33August 13, 2022 11:46 AM

I just watched June's 1989 performance on Arsenio. So silly to have her rapping.

by Anonymousreply 34August 13, 2022 2:23 PM

The Pointer Sisters songs never go out of style. Their catalogue of hits is endlessly replayable.

They had great vocals but what made them so great was the sheer exuberance and joy they brought to everything. You could tell they loved singing, but they also enjoyed being pop stars and loved to party and that just made them even more likable. The pop stars of today are joyless.

by Anonymousreply 35August 13, 2022 2:33 PM

Their looks were almost uniformly terrible, though. And yes, that affects their status.

by Anonymousreply 36August 13, 2022 2:35 PM

And by looks, I mean outfits/visual style.

by Anonymousreply 37August 13, 2022 2:35 PM

June was as unattractive as Stephanie Mills.

Even frickin' LaToya Jackson dissed Drag Race contestants by saying that they were dressed like the Pointer Sisters.

Ultra Nate came out with a cover of AUTOMATIC. Derivative and anemic. Doesn't even come close to Anita's vocal skill.

Video is 🔥 though

Ruth sang lead on "Automatic." Awesomely. I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking it was a guy.

by Anonymousreply 42August 13, 2022 4:16 PM

Whoops I meant Ruth.

Ironically my childhood friend thought it was a man singing all this time until I told him 5 years ago.

I always thought if Isabel Sanford [Weezie from The Jeffersons] sang she would sound like Ruth.

Ruth partied HARD in the 70s and 80s. She and Richard Pryor were good friends and also coke buddies.

by Anonymousreply 46August 13, 2022 11:35 PM

June was sexy and I love her voice. They could be fierce in all musical genres. and I liked their over the top looks and style, joy incarnate.

by Anonymousreply 47August 14, 2022 1:01 AM

I totally agree with that r47

Early in their careers, it was rumored that they were actually the Pointer Brothers but no drag queens would ever dress or style themselves that badly. I always thought June's kitty Kat shot in I'm So Excited as well as her Playboy photos were an attempt to dispel that.

by Anonymousreply 50August 14, 2022 4:31 PM

Bonnie was baaaadd.

Speaking of Bonnie. Just recently discovered this groovy track of hers. Hmm bondage on the 70s

I'm surprised I caught Madonna's nipple in Papa Don't Preach but not June's muff
