My grandmother. She was the Scarlett O'Hara of the southern county next to where I grew up. It was long and luxurious and beautiful My grandfather loved to sniff it and run his hands through it.

Then she found out about his mistress. She had her hair cut short to spite him and banned him from their bedroom.

OP implies nationally famous but doesn't say it explicitly. And my grandmother was locally famous for her beauty and long hair. And endless in her spite.

It's then that I learned we all have "hair curtains" and inevitably go back to the style we're most comfortable with. Jen Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are examples of this as well. Even Brandy inevitably goes back to the long braids; guys are the same. See Keanu, Brad Pitt, Snoop Dogg, etc.

I have no doubt that the "distract/pregnant" line (which doesn't make a lot of sense) was SJP's official story. But it was pretty well known around NYC that she lopped a lot of her hair off ca. S4 of SATC because it was literally breaking off, it was so damaged. She'd been coloring it for many years; combined with straightening and blowouts, etc. from S3, it destroyed her hair (which was still thick and naturally curly at the time). She grew it out again over the next year or two.

I'm in the minority, but I liked her short curly bob. SJP is petite, and it suited her tiny frame and rather sharp features. Very long hair can diminish a short woman and make her look even shorter (and sometimes, dumpier).

This was SJP's "straightened" look from a previous season. It was all the rage at the time--and I just hated it. It does very little for her or her facial features.

I would imagine that if one were an older woman who didn't want to have to deal much with their hair, growing it out just so it could be easily pinned or tied up each morning would be easier than having to get a hair cut every month, even to maintain a simple short style. And certainly cheaper.

Katharine Hepburn only wore very long hair later in her career. She wore it short when she began in the 1930s, longer for The Philadelphia Story, and then shortened at end of 1940s and early 1950s when shorter hair came into fashion.

Hepburn wore her hair in all sorts of lengths and styles throughout the 1930s/40s/50s until the early1960s when it was always long and pinned up a la Gibson Girl style.

I have a long neck and high cheek bones - the best look for me was a va va voomy chin length bob. BUT as I got past 50 my jawline started to get soft and my neck got a little waddle - the bob suddenly showcased my age. Unless/until I get a facelift wearing my hair shoulder length is the most attractive.

A retired LA elderqueen hairdresser (who chainsmoked, drank martinis, and was fabulous) once told me that Jaclyn Smith had the most gorgeous head of hair he ever worked on. This would have been just after CHARLIE'S ANGELS. (He also raved about the almost perfect symmetry of her face... and the fact that she was actually really nice.)

Jaclyn Smith updated her look incrementally over the years, but generally kept it long and curly/wavy. Her trademark. (She also has a successful line of wigs. Make of that what you will.)
