Which Tony Award winning Best Musical was the worst?

Well?

by Anonymousreply 18August 6, 2022 1:24 AM

MEMPHIS.

[quote] was the worst?

Do you mean the worst in the last decade? The last half century?

by Anonymousreply 6August 6, 2022 12:51 AM

R5 is right. Memphis was the absolute pits.

Kinky Boots was thoroughly mediocre (Matilda was far superior).

Spamalot was far from the worst winner, but considering it beat the brilliant Piazza, I have to give it honorable mention.

Raisin is bland; there’s a reason it’s never revived. Same with Redhead.

Dear Evan Hansen

But Redhead and Book of Mormon are close behind. Very close for the latter.

Cats. Forty years later, I still can’t figure out what the hell I was watching.

R8 Yeston's PHANTOM was so good though? (superior by far to Webby's POTO...)

What went wrong with TITANIC?

The Music Man. The songs had a certain charm for their time. But the book!

"Jamaica" by Yip Harburg & Fred Saidy

R4 it’s irony. Idiot.

"La Plume de Ma Tante"

R1 LESTAT never won a Tony or even got within sniffing distance of one, but if it had you'd be all be saying it.

The badness is a massive part of its charm, though. I adore that it's a pile of shit shamelessly squished into a facsimile of a musical. Elton just dngaf!!

How ironic that neither Gypsy nor West Side Story nor Follies won a Best Musical Tony and yet are revived more than most that did.
