My cat keeps stealing my pillow at night

At around 3 am my cat comes to bed and lies on my head. She has her own human sized pillow beside me with a satin pillowcase but she wants to lie on my head. I have two cats and they don’t sleep in my bed at the same time so the pillow beside me is free. Im a bit allergic to cats and will get a headache if I sleep with her on my face. If i move she tries to come lie on my head again. I have had other cats in the past and they always preferred having their own pillow beside me. Is there a way to persuade the one cat to try?

by Anonymousreply 52August 5, 2022 6:53 PM

Before bed, Spray your neck with Lemon Pledge. Cats hate citrus!

by Anonymousreply 1August 4, 2022 5:00 AM

Maybe just try to consistently correct her by moving her off your pillow. It may take a week but she'll get it. My dog does the same thing. I think it's a sign of affection but I like to sleep comfortably and not worry about my dog having enough of my pillow when there four more plus a huge bed.

by Anonymousreply 2August 4, 2022 5:08 AM

Kitty likes your scent!

by Anonymousreply 3August 4, 2022 5:16 AM

Why do you have cats if allergic to them?

by Anonymousreply 4August 4, 2022 5:20 AM

Mine does the same thing. I’ve given up. This is her domain. She’s the queen of the castle, and I’m her pet.

I love her so. ❤️

by Anonymousreply 5August 4, 2022 5:34 AM

She's plotting your death.

I'd recommend getting your will in order.

by Anonymousreply 6August 4, 2022 5:40 AM

Is OP’s cat also a pillow biter? Or is that OP’s thing?

by Anonymousreply 7August 4, 2022 5:47 AM

Mine has her own pillow next to mine but she only stays in it until she thinks I'm asleep then she leaves, usually stepping on my spleen and waking me up in the process. And if she's not in bed at bedtime and I don't go get her, she'll wake me up to let me know I forgot to remind her it was bedtime. So I can't win.

She has to be next to me when I go to sleep, but then she leaves and sleeps on the sofa.

by Anonymousreply 8August 4, 2022 5:59 AM

Picture of your kitty please.

by Anonymousreply 9August 4, 2022 6:29 AM

try putting a pillow behind yours.

by Anonymousreply 10August 4, 2022 6:31 AM

Not OP, but here’s my cat on my pillow right now. :/

Aw, such a cutie, R11. I don't know why people think cats are cold and aloof.

by Anonymousreply 12August 4, 2022 6:52 AM

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ R11

by Anonymousreply 13August 4, 2022 10:39 AM

I regret to inform you that the pillow now belongs to your cat and there is nothing you can do.

by Anonymousreply 14August 4, 2022 10:46 AM

I don't think I would like to have a cat that wanted to sleep on my head. I'm afraid her fleas if she had any would get into my hair for one thing.

by Anonymousreply 15August 4, 2022 10:47 AM

My dog does the same. She is a little dog, but stubby and she conquers the pillow little by little during the night until my head is pushed on the edge of it.

by Anonymousreply 16August 4, 2022 11:02 AM

The kitty at R11 is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 17August 4, 2022 11:03 AM

My kitty liked to sleep that way and of course he got his way as usual. Then vet said they do that because it because our heads are so warm. Then every morning at 5:00 AM without fail he would run his paw up and down the window shutters until he woke me up. He was an asshole but I adored him. I miss that little boy so.

R18 Beautiful cat. Black cats are my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 19August 4, 2022 11:29 AM

R19- Thank you. He was two days away from being euthanized when I took him home. :). No one wanted a black cat and the shelter had kept him for six months already. The shelter was knee deep in cats. I felt a little tap on my shoulder and it was him reaching out to me. Well he owned me ever after that!

by Anonymousreply 20August 4, 2022 3:12 PM

Was this Lucky, R20?

by Anonymousreply 21August 4, 2022 4:13 PM

Black and tuxedo cats are my favorite too. I wouldn't mind if this thread turned into a 'share your kitty photo' thread.

by Anonymousreply 22August 4, 2022 4:17 PM

R21- His name? Binx . We both were very lucky that day.

by Anonymousreply 23August 4, 2022 4:19 PM

I love it when kitties reach out and touch you. You were chosen R23, and I'm glad you accepted his adopting you. :)

A tuxedo kitty did the same thing to me, but I was already in love with him and his all black brother in the cage at the shelter. He reached right through the cage at me and pet my hand. I was like "Hi, I'm ready. I'll take these buddies home". See photo of them on the day I adopted them (they were five months old here).

I had them for 12 wonderful years and they were my best friends. They adopted my husband too when he came along, and he loved them just as much as I did. Sadly they both got cancer at the end of last year, and we had to say goodbye to them. But we are better people for having these loves all these years.

Rest in Peace to my sweet Mooshu and T-Bone

Pretty little guy R24.

by Anonymousreply 25August 4, 2022 4:34 PM

R24- I miss having a cat but I can no longer afford to take proper care of one because the vet bills are insane. I also have MS and was advised by my neurologist not to get another pet after Binx because he was afraid of an accidental fall. But I don't care about that because I just have to be more careful around them. It's being poor that prevents it but a very important, comforting part of my life is now gone. Being poor truly sucks in so many ways.

by Anonymousreply 26August 4, 2022 4:38 PM

I am so sorry to hear that R26.

by Anonymousreply 27August 4, 2022 5:41 PM

R27- 😘. Thank you but it is alright, I didn't mean to be such a depressing downer, lol. I have always had a pet and it is just strange without one but i am adjusting. It is very difficult when I know how many need forever homes and someone to love and care for them.

by Anonymousreply 28August 4, 2022 9:16 PM

Are you retired R28?

by Anonymousreply 29August 4, 2022 9:25 PM

Trying fostering, R26/R28. Call up a shelter and tell them you're willing to foster.

You'll have a pet in your home before nightfall tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 30August 4, 2022 9:38 PM

R29- Disabled. I have MS and Osteoporosis.

by Anonymousreply 31August 4, 2022 9:40 PM

I’m with r2. All healthy relationships require boundaries.

Both of my friends who are the most devoted cat owners are mildly allergic to them fyi. They just get used to not touching their faces after touching their cats.

by Anonymousreply 32August 4, 2022 9:40 PM

My cat loves my pillow because my scent is all over it. I've often been pushed off in the middle of the night and the cat is sprawled over the pillow and I'm underneath the covers.

I've also trained cats to use scratching posts by rubbing it - they like my scent. That's why cats scratch the furniture you use or that's near you, they want to be near you and your unique smell.

by Anonymousreply 33August 4, 2022 9:48 PM

She's cold OP. The head is the warmest part of the human body and the top of our heads emit heat. Mine did this when they were kittens, they are seeking warmth.

Try a self warming bed, they looove them......Amazon has great ones for cheap.

[quote]She's cold OP

My cats did this in the dead of summer (no air conditioning).

by Anonymousreply 35August 4, 2022 10:56 PM

omg, R24! R11 here…yor cars are beautiful!!

I adopted my previous cat as a kitten., but lost him to cancer/feline lukemia when he was ten. He was huge and strong and standoffish (a bit of an asshole if you didn’t know how to approach him), but I loved him so much - be was my best friend, too.

I adopted the cat I have now soon after, and he’s TINY… The people caring for him said he was very wary of people, but he immediately sat in my lap. He has scars around his eyes and was abused as a kitten, but as soon as we brought him home he left a rat under our christmas tree!

It never gets easier to put a pet down. but it’s worth it giving a great life to an animal who would otherwise be euthanised. Cats thive on routine and knowing what to expect. I figure losing the use of my pillow is a small price to pay for knowing this animal feels secure. 🤷🏻

by Anonymousreply 36August 5, 2022 5:56 AM

^^ “your cats”, obviously - gah! 🙄

by Anonymousreply 37August 5, 2022 6:01 AM

Ten years is too short... But you gave that regal boy a good home.

I learned a lot about cat cancer last year. I took very good notes too in case I encounter this again. We do plan on getting more buddies next year. We are still very traumatized by it all though. They got sick one after the other.

R39 what kind of cat is that? He looks like a thinner version of my moms cat?

by Anonymousreply 40August 5, 2022 3:10 PM

That is very cute, op. Pets put me to sleep, soft breathing is relaxing

by Anonymousreply 41August 5, 2022 3:15 PM

My cat used to steal my silverware at night. I don't know where she put it.

I eventually had to sell her to medical researchers.

by Anonymousreply 42August 5, 2022 3:17 PM

My cat used to go down to the basement and raid the laundry basket at night and bring up five or six articles of clothing and drop them on the first floor - she did it from age two to seventeen.

by Anonymousreply 43August 5, 2022 3:21 PM

Get her a heated pillow.

by Anonymousreply 44August 5, 2022 3:35 PM

I had a cat who died of cancer at age 8. I loved that cat so much, I spent $25,000 on chemo. He only lasted a year. That money was for a new Prius. Bought a $6000 used one instead. After that experience, I would never subject an animal to chemo again.

by Anonymousreply 45August 5, 2022 3:58 PM

The head is warm. Put a heating pad on low by pillow.

by Anonymousreply 46August 5, 2022 4:00 PM

R45, that is sad for sure. I spent close to that much on one of my two cats. The first one had an aggressive untreatable cancer (multiple myeloma) that advanced so quickly by the time we got a diagnosis, it was his time to go. He was going blind and bumping into walls, and stopped eating. As soon as we put him down, the next week the other cat got large cell intestinal lymphoma, and we caught it in a relatively good timing to decide to try chemo. Chemo and the steroids extended his life a couple more months and he was doing very well, and then he wasn't. We let him go just a few months after the first one. I don't regret trying to make him more comfortable and extend his life a bit - we were told he could have another year or two, but that it was 50/50 chance.

by Anonymousreply 47August 5, 2022 5:06 PM

In the old day, pet gets deathly ill, they go down.

by Anonymousreply 48August 5, 2022 5:38 PM

It's true, R48. But in the old day, most pets were mainly outdoors because we weren't living in dangerous urban environments.

This is certainly a first world problem, deciding whether to prolong the life of pets when terminally ill. I had mixed feelings about it at the time. My husband was more committed to the chemo than I was for our 2nd kitty.

But here's the thing, when the pet is in treatment for cancer, whether it be steroids or a combo of steroids/chemo, the pet is typically not negatively affected by it like humans are. The standard weaknesses and susceptibility to infections that humans experience when going through cancer treatment doesn't apply to pets. In fact, you notice a boost of energy/normalcy occurring when they get these treatments. So while you are aware that the animal has limited time, and it's extremely sad, you can see that they aren't suffering when undergoing this treatment. The only question is how much time are you given by the treatments, and is it worth it. For my situation, having a couple months where my 2nd kitty was acting normal was a very bittersweet experience, and a 'honeymoon' of sorts, delaying the inevitable, but also giving you some time to make peace with the situation and say goodbye. With my 1st kitty, it was a very sudden and horrific 21 day experience that if I had to do over again, knowing what I know, I would have insisted on putting him down sooner.

by Anonymousreply 49August 5, 2022 5:45 PM

R48, my cats were indoor and outdoor (when they felt like it) and we lived in a typical suburban environment. They were all strays we found as young cats or kittens. With one exception, none of them was ever sick, just wound down with old age. At the point where quality of life was low with old age, i e, stopped eating, we had them put down. Keeping a pet alive is for YOUR benefit, not theirs.
