I had no idea. Interesting, because Hemingway's mother dressed him as a girl when he was little.
Gregory/Gloria: Ernest Hemingway's trans, alcoholic, doctor kid

Are we going to get into the lesbian alcoholic that drank herself to death, too?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 4, 2022 12:29 AM |
That wasn't "dressing as a girl" at the time. That was called dressing an infant/small child.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 4, 2022 12:29 AM |
Don't pretend some idiot Freudianism when you talk about mother dressing boys as girls.
This was standard practice for ALL children before they got Potty-Training.
You don't realise the effort involved in teaching small children how to empty their bowels properly in a safe fashion.

[quote] I had no idea.
Thank you for some honesty, OP.

His eyebrows were way too thin.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 4, 2022 12:32 AM |
Sounds like Ernest has some gender issues himself and possibly homosexuality. I truly believe that addiction is just a symptom to numb a greater issue

Thanks. R2. I'm very well aware that little boys wore dresses. I have photos of my great-grandfather wearing frocks when he was a toddler. Hemingway's mother, however, told people that she had two little girls, called him "Ernestine," and dressed him in lace and gingham. It was a step beyond, which is why it's consistently referenced. But thanks for the "schooling."

Hemingway was very masculine and I've never gotten gay vibes from him, but there is a lot of drama and mental illness in that family.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 4, 2022 12:37 AM |
r9 yeah, the trans hysterics crowd is really shooting themselves in the foot with this one.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 4, 2022 12:40 AM |
R9 We'll never know. But Zelda Fitzgerald (part of his social circle) thought he was gay -- and that Scott was having an affair with him. Of course she was insane as well.

R9 You obviously saw that six hour long "biography" of Hemingway by ken Burns[?].
It was obsessively hysterical with feminised/Wokeism.

Well, they don't have anything to do with each other, r9, so...
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 4, 2022 12:43 AM |
R11 The word 'gay' didn't exist then.

R11 Honey, I'm not quoting her. I don't know what term she used. She thought Scott and Ernest were having an affair, and she wasn't buying Hemingway's macho/womanizing act. It was an ongoing source of conflict and argument between the Fitzgeralds.

R99 I did not see the film. I have an advanced degree in American Literature and read all his works and have a solid working knowledge of his life. That's the basis for my opinion, and I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. I definitely would put much stock in what Zelda said.

So, R18, you have an advanced degree in American Literature and have a solid working knowledge of his life.
Was he a homosexual or a nutcase?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 6, 2022 2:53 AM |
Hemingway and Fitzgerald were fucking.
That's why Zelda hated Hemingway.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 6, 2022 2:55 AM |
Who was topping who, R20?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 6, 2022 2:57 AM |
I hope Papa H topped, R21. I like the idea of F Scott getting pounded by the rougher, manlier Hemingway.
That seems to be how god intended things.
Beating on, boats against the current... and all that jazz.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 6, 2022 3:52 AM |
R19, nothing in his personal writings or letters or anything I've come across suggest he was gay. Likewise with Fitzgerald. I think Hemingway suffered from mental illness and was an alcoholic. He was a troubled man. Fitzgerald was depressed and a raging alcoholic. Once he has Zelda institutionalized, things got worse because he no longer had to constantly attempt to stabilize her. He drank himself to death.

Do you think his best work was unwritten?

It's odd how it became trendy to treat gender dysphoria so differently from other mental illnesses.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 7, 2022 8:23 PM |
"As a boy, Hemingway was outwardly athletic..."
Such odd phrases from today's woke writers. Is it possible for someone to be "inwardly athletic"?
He was either athletic or he wasn't.

Didn't Truman Capote call Hemingway "Mr Closet Everything"?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 7, 2022 8:36 PM |
R22 You like steroptypes, but it was Papa who liked to play a girl in bed-according to his wife, not Fitz.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 7, 2022 10:09 PM |
That is one fucked up family.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 7, 2022 11:04 PM |
Are there any documentaries on Hemmingway or Fitzgerald anyone can recommend? I've seen the one upthread with the Hemmingway sisters, which I enjoyed. I went to the Hemmingway house in Key West last year and was struck by how much his "macho" image was so pronounced.
