Gregory/Gloria: Ernest Hemingway's trans, alcoholic, doctor kid

I had no idea. Interesting, because Hemingway's mother dressed him as a girl when he was little.

Are we going to get into the lesbian alcoholic that drank herself to death, too?

by Anonymousreply 1August 4, 2022 12:29 AM

That wasn't "dressing as a girl" at the time. That was called dressing an infant/small child.

Don't pretend some idiot Freudianism when you talk about mother dressing boys as girls.

This was standard practice for ALL children before they got Potty-Training.

You don't realise the effort involved in teaching small children how to empty their bowels properly in a safe fashion.

[quote] I had no idea.

Thank you for some honesty, OP.

by Anonymousreply 4August 4, 2022 12:32 AM

His eyebrows were way too thin.

by Anonymousreply 5August 4, 2022 12:32 AM

Sounds like Ernest has some gender issues himself and possibly homosexuality. I truly believe that addiction is just a symptom to numb a greater issue

by Anonymousreply 6August 4, 2022 12:35 AM

Thanks. R2. I'm very well aware that little boys wore dresses. I have photos of my great-grandfather wearing frocks when he was a toddler. Hemingway's mother, however, told people that she had two little girls, called him "Ernestine," and dressed him in lace and gingham. It was a step beyond, which is why it's consistently referenced. But thanks for the "schooling."

by Anonymousreply 7August 4, 2022 12:35 AM

More on "Ernestine" and girls' clothes.

Hemingway was very masculine and I've never gotten gay vibes from him, but there is a lot of drama and mental illness in that family.

by Anonymousreply 9August 4, 2022 12:37 AM

r9 yeah, the trans hysterics crowd is really shooting themselves in the foot with this one.

R9 We'll never know. But Zelda Fitzgerald (part of his social circle) thought he was gay -- and that Scott was having an affair with him. Of course she was insane as well.

by Anonymousreply 11August 4, 2022 12:41 AM

R9 You obviously saw that six hour long "biography" of Hemingway by ken Burns[?].

It was obsessively hysterical with feminised/Wokeism.

Well, they don't have anything to do with each other, r9, so...

by Anonymousreply 14August 4, 2022 12:43 AM

R11 The word 'gay' didn't exist then.

R11 Honey, I'm not quoting her. I don't know what term she used. She thought Scott and Ernest were having an affair, and she wasn't buying Hemingway's macho/womanizing act. It was an ongoing source of conflict and argument between the Fitzgeralds.

by Anonymousreply 17August 4, 2022 12:49 AM

R99 I did not see the film. I have an advanced degree in American Literature and read all his works and have a solid working knowledge of his life. That's the basis for my opinion, and I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. I definitely would put much stock in what Zelda said.

by Anonymousreply 18August 4, 2022 1:11 AM

So, R18, you have an advanced degree in American Literature and have a solid working knowledge of his life.

Was he a homosexual or a nutcase?

by Anonymousreply 19August 6, 2022 2:53 AM

Hemingway and Fitzgerald were fucking.

That's why Zelda hated Hemingway.

by Anonymousreply 20August 6, 2022 2:55 AM

Who was topping who, R20?

by Anonymousreply 21August 6, 2022 2:57 AM

I hope Papa H topped, R21. I like the idea of F Scott getting pounded by the rougher, manlier Hemingway.

That seems to be how god intended things.

Beating on, boats against the current... and all that jazz.

by Anonymousreply 22August 6, 2022 3:52 AM

R19, nothing in his personal writings or letters or anything I've come across suggest he was gay. Likewise with Fitzgerald. I think Hemingway suffered from mental illness and was an alcoholic. He was a troubled man. Fitzgerald was depressed and a raging alcoholic. Once he has Zelda institutionalized, things got worse because he no longer had to constantly attempt to stabilize her. He drank himself to death.

by Anonymousreply 23August 6, 2022 5:33 AM

[quote] things got worse

Do you think his best work was unwritten?

by Anonymousreply 24August 6, 2022 5:45 AM

Are we sure that’s not Judi Dench in op’s photo?

by Anonymousreply 25August 7, 2022 8:14 PM

I kept a file on the kid.

by Anonymousreply 26August 7, 2022 8:18 PM

It's odd how it became trendy to treat gender dysphoria so differently from other mental illnesses.

by Anonymousreply 27August 7, 2022 8:23 PM

"As a boy, Hemingway was outwardly athletic..."

Such odd phrases from today's woke writers. Is it possible for someone to be "inwardly athletic"?

He was either athletic or he wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 28August 7, 2022 8:31 PM

Didn't Truman Capote call Hemingway "Mr Closet Everything"?

by Anonymousreply 29August 7, 2022 8:36 PM

R22 You like steroptypes, but it was Papa who liked to play a girl in bed-according to his wife, not Fitz.

by Anonymousreply 30August 7, 2022 10:09 PM

Hot daddy Hemingway.

Are there any documentaries on Hemmingway or Fitzgerald anyone can recommend? I've seen the one upthread with the Hemmingway sisters, which I enjoyed. I went to the Hemmingway house in Key West last year and was struck by how much his "macho" image was so pronounced.

by Anonymousreply 34August 7, 2022 11:08 PM

Just the one M, dear, R34. Just the one.
