U.S., Chinese Forces Flex Military Muscle as Pelosi Visits Taiwan

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday as anticipated, creating a diplomatic crisis between the United States and China.

The Chinese military deployed amphibious tanks to the country’s beaches and sent a large number of fighter planes into the Taiwan Strait, while the United States positioned a carrier strike group near Taiwan.

Taiwanese military forces, on the other hand, remained fairly quiet.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s high-profile visit to Taiwan on Tuesday resulted in both the United States and China positioning military forces in the region. The Air Force jet carrying Pelosi touched down in Taiwan on Monday night, and a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier quietly positioned itself to the south of the island. Meanwhile, Chinese military forces staged their own show of force, parading tracked fighting vehicles on beaches, sending fighter jets nearby, and surrounding the island with military exercises.

Speaker Pelosi, the third-highest ranked official in the U.S. government, flew from the continental United States to Hawaii over the weekend, the first stop on her Asian tour. Pelosi and her entourage traveled in an Air Force C-40 Clipper, a military VIP transport based on the Boeing 737NG commercial transport. After a stopover to visit the USS Arizona memorial, Pelosi traveled on to Asia where she planned to visit Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. Pelosi’s official itinerary did not mention a visit to Taiwan, though she was widely expected to make a stop.

I can't deal with another war, so settle down, girls.

r1 China's been doing this for the last decade.. . everywhere but Taiwan is their red button issue.

It's inevitable... plus with the new silk road which would solidify a trade and investment pact between Russia and China (and really, most of the world in that region).. it's necessary to go after China as well. It's just heavily hypocritical . . . and nothing is really going to happen, it too much of an economic force - not considered a super power yet - but we rely too much on them... besides they're holding the receipts on many of the loans we've received.

Frankly, the U.S. should have had a stronger response for Hong Kong but everyone gets angry if they're the world police.

It's a wonder what China would do because most of their intimidation is focused on the pacific allies. I wonder if they'll play cat and mouse games like they do with Australia or closer Japan and South Korea. That might be briefly entertaining...

what are you on about, R2?

What if China sent a senior cabinet member to Cuba to show its Allegiance with the Cuban people. These politicians we have now are frikin Geretocrats they need to hurry up and die. They are willing to sacrifice the delicate balance our messed up word is in for their own frail withering irrelevant egos.

The Chinese military is full of pussies.

Pelosi's Taiwan trip is the first American diplomacy to show righteousness, leadership, and strength since WW2.

Challenge me by showing another.

Xi must be a-scared.

The problem Taiwan poses is that it is a demonstration of a modern democratic Chinese success story. It is a repudiation of the the alternate model of China proposed by the CCP and Xi.

The Chinese people would be better off following Taiwan's model rather than trying to absorb it into its corrupt model of autocracy and unregulated hypercapitalism.

China needs to take that stick out of it’s ass, take a deep breath, and relax. A couple shots of Jameson would help, too.

by Anonymousreply 9August 6, 2022 11:49 AM

I'm assuming this gesture was meant to signal to China to not even THINK of trying a Ukraine on Taiwan, to which China responded, oh YEAH, well we could if we wanted to.

Boosters here obviously want nuke war.

The bloodlust fostered on this board went away during prime time week but now it's back.

Let Japan fully re-militarize again.

A real war with another powerful country would be incredible to witness. I love to imagine that it would somehow hurt billionaires’ pockets and cleanse our diseased economy, but they’ve legislated protections for themselves for the last 50 years or so. So they’d probably just get richer, like always.

This is beyond pathetic...

It's true then. They DO have tiny dicks.

by Anonymousreply 15August 10, 2022 7:25 AM

. . . and 6 months from now, when the West is again infected with yet another novel virus currently being concocted in a lab in China, when everyone is in lock-down, panicked and hysterical, when economies are again in chaos, and hospitals under siege, etc. etc. etc., Xi will smile knowingly, shake his head and mutter "YA DUMB FUCKING GWEILO!!!!"

by Anonymousreply 16August 10, 2022 10:00 AM

Is it my eye going or does Pelosi have a GIANT rack ?

R17 Your eye and your mind.

The Chinese are profoundly insecure and cannot understand why people are sick of their ridiculous form or representation of communism.

History indicates that the big bully named the United States of America, ALWAYS gets what it wants in the end.

ALWAYS.

We can speculate on this shit from various brilliant POVs, all day. Doesn’t matter.

The US doesn’t play to lose, even when it appears that they do lose. That’s not the case.

And let’s face it, the US is just as corrupt as China, which its history is framed in narratives to claim otherwise, until it cannot. Social media and open source reporting tore down the veil of feigned benevolence.

Study our history with China and emerging economies in Asia, in detail and from as many sources that are factual as possible, to understand how AWFUL the United States have fucked Asia over in myriad ways.

Im not defending China, but the United States should not be surprised at their wrath regarding this move, as we have allowed them to be heavily invested in various sectors of the economy, right here in the US.

The US is a HUGE whore. Too bad many people cannot see this clearly.

Also, don’t respond to me about any of Trump’s policy with China. I’m well aware of it in detail, and I do not find it to have been beneficial to anyone but himself, his family, and business interests.

Yes, other politicians have done the same, but at least they wouldn’t have mismanaged CoViD, which trump understood was a problem in June of 2019.

That is all. Bedtime for me. Sleep well, DL.
