Yes it was not stated that any of the characters were gay but the whole scenario and family set up in a way made or illustrated the argument that male only households can raise children ? Was this possible subtext speculated upon at the time of its release?
Does the film Three men and a baby arguably have a gay subtext?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 21, 2023 2:11 AM |
It is certainly something others have commented and speculated on over more recent years.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 2, 2022 11:23 PM |
It certainly made me feel gay.

r2 oooh in what way?!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 3, 2022 12:35 AM |
I had not realized how popular this film was until I heard on a podcast earlier this evening about film in 1987 that this was the top grossing film at the box office for that year!

I never saw the movie, but the gay storylines write themselves with OP's photo.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 4, 2022 12:51 AM |
r5 Indeed they do but with it being the 1980s its definitely written more as a subtext or undertone.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 4, 2022 1:58 AM |
I wonder if hollywood would remake this film but with there being no hidden subtext but actually more open about what it is saying or writing about?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 8, 2022 12:01 AM |
I don't know. But it does have a ghost.
Supposedly.

The movie certainly helped Steve Gutenberg’s Box Office average and about the last time he was still cute. He has been discussed in the past but did we ever come to a consensus on gay or not. Or is he like Selleck and a waste of time to discuss further.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 8, 2022 12:10 AM |
In real life the title would be Three GAY Men And A Baby

R8, I thought it was a kid who commits suicide in the background. I believe it was just actually aTed Danson standee and dumbasses started the rumor that it was a kid who committed suicide.

French one is better though this American one is good enough.

The apartment was totally gay. And I loved it
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 8, 2022 12:35 AM |
Who is the one on the left?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 8, 2022 12:42 AM |
No, it's too boughie, unaware and Hollywood to even accidentally have any layers.
Even when I was young, I thought this was a movie for dummies.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 8, 2022 12:44 AM |
r11 Apparently it was a cardboard cutout of Ted Dansen.
I'm not buying it!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 8, 2022 12:44 AM |
That baby is now almost 40. God, how time flies.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 8, 2022 12:44 AM |
They mention it was not the case in the original French movie.
I don't remember why one of the man has to talk to the police at one point. He gets to says he lives with male protagonist # 2. The policeman icely replies :" I see.", all judgy.
Protagonist # 1 : You don't see at all. In fact, we are THREE men living together.
Cop, severe and judgmental : " it gets better and better ! ( meaning it's even worse.)

3 Men and A Baby has a really refreshing non-heteronormative storyline. The sequel, unfortuately, undoes all the good work of the original.

Please, it would star Michael B. Jordan, Oscar Issac, Ken Jeong and Laverne Cox as the former babymaker.

Guttenberg always seemed gay to me. But maybe he just carries the residual camp of You Can't Stop The Music. I know Tom Selleck certainly stirred feelings inside me as a youngster, and I wanted him to be my Daddy.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 8, 2022 12:53 AM |
I'm sure he was a daddy to many on Oahu.

The photo OP posted caught the moment in time when these guys looked their best.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 8, 2022 12:59 AM |
r19 Oh? I had not realised there was a sequel.
r19 Are you referring to the actors or characters?!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 8, 2022 1:07 AM |
There certainly was something homoerotic about the sequel's porn parody, "Three Men Do a Little Lady"!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 8, 2022 1:07 AM |
In the sequel, the daughter is sad and confused about having 3 daddies and living in a fabulous NY brownstone, not with a mom/dad in suburbia like her tony pre-school peers. So the household breaks up and mom finds a husband and everyone is happy, gag.

r26 Arrgh sounds like they chickened out of being radical with their story conclusion.

2 of the 3 actors were gay!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 19, 2023 3:02 AM |
r29 Which two?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 19, 2023 3:04 AM |
Then there was the unauthorized sequel, "Three Men and an Adult Baby."
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 19, 2023 3:09 AM |
No.

I remember thinking what a dumb fucking movie this is. My friend insisted I go with her to see it, and I thought I don't want to tell her how stupid this is. Lol, all these years later she finally agrees with me. I don't remember thinking there was anything alluding to them being gay or the movie having gay undertones, I just thought it was dumb.

I enjoyed the scene where Steve Guttenberg gratuitously presented hole, but it seemed more text than subtext.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 19, 2023 5:24 AM |
R33 = Shelly Long, waiting for a Hello Again 2 script.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 19, 2023 5:46 AM |
I know that the scene with the “ghost” is just a cardboard cutout featured earlier in the movie, but it’s still creepy when the camera pans by! It reminds me of the hidden “background ghosts” in The Haunting of Hill House.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 19, 2023 7:18 AM |
No.
This is one of the frau-est pieces of shit ever committed to celluloid. Three good looking men take care of a baby. Fraus everywhere wet themselves.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 19, 2023 7:50 AM |
It will when Zac Efron stars in the remake.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 19, 2023 8:34 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 19, 2023 8:53 AM |
r38 Ooh thats an intriguing possibility!! I wonder who will play the other two men?!
