What does a "Chief Diversity Officer" actually do?

I'm seriously curious....

by Anonymousreply 84August 3, 2022 12:24 AM

They fill out applications for diversity awards

by Anonymousreply 1August 2, 2022 2:46 AM

One side in the passive aggressive war with the Chief People Officer.

by Anonymousreply 2August 2, 2022 2:56 AM

Probably more than you've ever done, OP

by Anonymousreply 3August 2, 2022 2:57 AM

They earn points for companies who want to appear progressive

by Anonymousreply 4August 2, 2022 3:04 AM

They generate a lot of jargon-filled, near impenetrable prose.

by Anonymousreply 5August 2, 2022 3:08 AM

They make sure employees resent each other along racial lines so they don't work together to do evil acts like unionizing.

by Anonymousreply 6August 2, 2022 3:09 AM

[quote] One side in the passive aggressive war with the Chief People Officer.

LOL! We might have the same employer.

by Anonymousreply 7August 2, 2022 3:17 AM

They help facilitate equity and inclusion. Duh!

by Anonymousreply 8August 2, 2022 3:18 AM

Ours walks around the office with headphones on. Not sure what his actual tasks are.

by Anonymousreply 9August 2, 2022 3:26 AM

They make employees sit through boring, senseless woke seminars that everyone hates but pretends to care about.

by Anonymousreply 10August 2, 2022 3:30 AM

r9 is they an OG his his?

by Anonymousreply 11August 2, 2022 3:37 AM

The one at my company, a white woman, recently started using her husband's ethnic-sounding surname. She's been married to the guy for a decade or two. Someone is clearly hunting for a new job and Karen Whitebread doesn't look as good on a resume for a diversity position as Karen Llamados does.

I bet she may even start using (They/Them) just to increase chances to get an interview.

by Anonymousreply 12August 2, 2022 3:37 AM

Are you making that name up or is she really called Karen?

by Anonymousreply 13August 2, 2022 3:39 AM

OP The fact you even dared to asked, shows you are racist.

by Anonymousreply 14August 2, 2022 3:41 AM

Racist, privileged and patriarchially pronouned.

CAN-CELLED!

by Anonymousreply 15August 2, 2022 3:42 AM

The Diversity Officer from my last job represented the agency at industry events, attended job fairs, flirted with young female interns and collected a big fat paycheck. Funny thing is there were only a handful of POC employees and he did nothing to change that. It’s a joke.

by Anonymousreply 16August 2, 2022 4:34 AM

Time to cancel OP.

by Anonymousreply 17August 2, 2022 4:37 AM

Oh! And once hired they’re impossible to get rid off without being labeled a racist. Want them gone? It’s gonna cost you at least a years salary.

by Anonymousreply 18August 2, 2022 4:37 AM

I'd like to see you in my office, OP.

by Anonymousreply 19August 2, 2022 4:41 AM

“Chief” Diversity officer? How offensive. Are cultural sensitivity training pow wows online, or in the Longhouse?

by Anonymousreply 20August 2, 2022 5:08 AM

Diversity officers teach us how to be empathic listeners.

by Anonymousreply 21August 2, 2022 5:33 AM

My large British public sector organisation used to have an Equality Officer who was part of HR and would advise departments on issues around sexism, racism, homophobia, religious rights, disability in line with the Equality Act.

He’d be called in to advise on a member of staff returning to work after a car accident left him in a wheelchair and his office was in a building with no lift and no automatic doors and advise the organisation on their responsibilities and what a reasonable compromise might be for everyone.

He’s since gone and the department has expanded and been rebranded as Inclusion and their main priority is, yes, trans inclusion. Mainly because Stonewall is the only organisation who asks organisations to demonstrate what they’ve done for trans rights.

They recently made a huge fuss about how they’ve overseen new trans inclusive toilet and shower facilities for staff. The original plans were single use rooms that meet disability access requirements and the signs for them do have a wheelchair alongside the combination of male and female arrows sign.

by Anonymousreply 22August 2, 2022 5:49 AM

They hit their “reduction of male, pale and stale” KPIs then sidle down the corridor, cackling.

by Anonymousreply 23August 2, 2022 5:54 AM

R22 Cannot trannys have a safe place to piss? And get partially hard?

by Anonymousreply 24August 2, 2022 6:37 AM

It's a title for morbidly obese fraus

by Anonymousreply 25August 2, 2022 6:48 AM

Score the best inter office dick.

by Anonymousreply 26August 2, 2022 6:58 AM

They get paid slightly higher than regular human resource workers and spend most of their time taking workshops to then unleash this brand of sadomascohism onto employees.

by Anonymousreply 27August 2, 2022 7:43 AM

I assume they just scowl at the white employees and check off a lot of boxes to justify their do-nothing position, right?

They get really pissed when it is observed that the employees of color have a different "cultural relationship" with time, especially the time they are supposed to be at work.

by Anonymousreply 28August 2, 2022 7:49 AM

Diversity means black .

by Anonymousreply 29August 2, 2022 8:28 AM

[quote] who want to appear progressive

But what does that word mean now? 'Progressing up someone's rectum'?

by Anonymousreply 30August 2, 2022 8:44 AM

r30 I'd assume the token hires. . . which, of course, are made a big deal about and get a lot of press usually after a major fuck up while company polices really don't change. Or worse they over compensate and rather than hiring on merits become too focused on phenotype/appearances.

This is perhaps more noted in the tech industry where there were concerted efforts to get more (white) women and minorities (other than indians, asians, arabs and jews) yet rather than give up when with all their efforts their stats didn't increase... continued to progressively lower the bar. . . to where they took in all the "snowflakes"

that imploded after the gamergate scandals...

you recall when twitter and reddit made the mistake of briefly gaving authoritarians control, no?

by Anonymousreply 31August 2, 2022 8:59 AM

[quote]Diversity officers teach us how to be empathic listeners.

That's not what I heard.

by Anonymousreply 32August 2, 2022 9:03 AM

Gee, I wonder if R31 is a disgruntled bigot

by Anonymousreply 33August 2, 2022 10:07 AM

r12 I worked with a similar type of person. She changed her Zoom pronouns from she/her to she/they in the MIDDLE of a meeting.

by Anonymousreply 34August 2, 2022 10:12 AM

At my company. the CDO has:

* helped to make it possible for people to add pronouns to their HR profile in Workday

* brought in speakers for different months (e.g., non-binary speaker for pride month, Black speakers for Black history month, etc.)

* developed inclusive hiring practices to ensure that we are not just interviewing white men and women

by Anonymousreply 35August 2, 2022 10:26 AM

Mostly, they scold.

by Anonymousreply 36August 2, 2022 10:41 AM

They only see what's on the outside.

by Anonymousreply 37August 2, 2022 11:11 AM

They make sure all the new hires are of their race and/or ethnicity.

by Anonymousreply 38August 2, 2022 11:23 AM

The irony is that there is no diversity amongst diversity officers.

by Anonymousreply 39August 2, 2022 11:35 AM

They P R!

by Anonymousreply 40August 2, 2022 11:53 AM

They whinge. Not just about lack of diversity, about everything.

by Anonymousreply 41August 2, 2022 12:06 PM

They make you sit through endless “seminars”ridiculing the “dominant culture” all so that we can figure out how that feels for us on the Feelings Wheel.

by Anonymousreply 42August 2, 2022 12:22 PM

[quote]Feelings Wheel

This is hilarious r42

by Anonymousreply 43August 2, 2022 12:50 PM

They were having trouble in HR to further expand their control, so they aimed at the (call it what it is, alas) anti-white office.

They are idiots.

by Anonymousreply 44August 2, 2022 12:54 PM

R6 gets it.

by Anonymousreply 45August 2, 2022 1:15 PM

Useless seminars when you have a shit-ton of work that needs to get done.

by Anonymousreply 46August 2, 2022 1:45 PM

R42, did you make up the "Feelings Wheel"??? Because that is just TOO GOOD.

by Anonymousreply 47August 2, 2022 2:40 PM

Each day they fight the creeping awareness that they make a shitload of money for a job with little purpose that everyone resents to one degree or another and they're going to have to figure out how to keep their gravy train on these tracks. Because they're not going back to 45 thousand a year.

by Anonymousreply 48August 2, 2022 2:49 PM

r47 It's frequently employed in psychology... it was once reserved for very small children.

There are better methods for dealing with "repressed" adults.

by Anonymousreply 49August 2, 2022 3:19 PM

^ that vid explains what's behind it but it doesn't seem to get into most settings.. it's just the wheel and some "I'm okay, you're okay" type that spins it as if she was on the price as right and attempts to force you into whatever it lands on - to get at the "heart" of what you're really feeling right now.

The most commonly parodied is the fall trust exercises... which was initially for teens with anxiety and control issues but soon became a H.R. staple.

H.R. stays on top of all the cutting edge exercises and implements them in a shallow fashion.

Frankly, we could look at H.R. as the trouble with "administrators" and how they're killing virtually every industry by doing "nothing" -- they're in-house social workers and about as useful as normal social workers. Usually absurdly idealistic until the brutality of the system kills them from the inside out and they become a bureaucratic demon, dedicated to securing their job, spawning more H.R. parasites that are loyalists to the company and here to keep the employees pacified as an inane "perk"

by Anonymousreply 50August 2, 2022 3:30 PM

The world has gone crazy.

by Anonymousreply 51August 2, 2022 3:32 PM

In high school, we did some activity that involved trust falls r50

I was NEVER able to do it. I trust no one, apparently, and certainly not the peers who bullied me for over a decade.

by Anonymousreply 52August 2, 2022 3:32 PM

Bingo R10

by Anonymousreply 53August 2, 2022 3:40 PM

r52 It was an exercised intended to be directed by someone the individual was in long term therapy with... as usually they transfer their trust onto therapists and are more likely to engage in it because of that sense of rappot as a tool to get them to reliquinish some control rather trust, actually. . . but it's entered the realm of pop pscyh. It's like how somatic psychology is thoroughly new age now. Or psychiatry has very little separate between itself and psychology, anymore. the hamfisted politics are quite the same as all this. Hence, there's a massive shortage on all things psych in public health.

by Anonymousreply 54August 2, 2022 3:40 PM

[quote]It's a title for morbidly obese angry black women and/or TRA's

Fixed it for you, R25

by Anonymousreply 55August 2, 2022 4:37 PM

[quote]They hit their “reduction of male, pale and stale” KPIs then sidle down the corridor, cackling.

While profits and productivity crash.

by Anonymousreply 56August 2, 2022 4:38 PM

r24 you lot have no room to talk... you're just upset that's now happening on you after you pulled the same on everyone else for decades.

by Anonymousreply 57August 2, 2022 4:44 PM

R47: I wish I HAD made up that shit. It was the biggest waste of time and our management made DEI training mandatory and tagged it to our bonuses. Pretty sure that’s illegal?!

by Anonymousreply 58August 2, 2022 4:46 PM

there's more diversity in old PSAs that among the new lot

but today this clip would be considered an abelist microaggression of all the isms and phobias.

Do people of color really feel this activity is creating good change or making them feel respected?

Because it feels like fucking nursery school to me, but I'm a white guy over fifty... obviously I'm busy trying to survive the equity lens on top of the scope.

by Anonymousreply 67August 2, 2022 5:27 PM

[quote]the hypocrisy of rad fems whining about this now:

Fuck off cunt face.

Equality laws have benefitted every gay man in the Western world. Remember when it was legal to sack someone for being gay? Remember when companies would keep on staff members who were resolute homophobes?

Having sensible people with knowledge of employment law working in HR and training staff is a good thing.

Where it's gone too far is that companies and organisations now want their equality officers to promote the policies they want, not policies that stand in law. It's fairly easy to criticise organisations who push concepts of white privilege or cis privilege without dismissing the entire concept of trying to achieve a culture in work that doesn't discriminate against minority groups.

by Anonymousreply 68August 2, 2022 5:42 PM

Right but that's not what is happening. It's like the TRAs: either you are in obedient lockstep or you're fucked. Ideology has overtaken. What's the merit in that?

You can't train staff into thinking anything. That's bullshit. It is always ton at the top and the relationship with the manager. But let's waste more time and money on lunch and learns and off sites instead of achieving the objectives through the means that will make something happening. Pizza in the lunchroom today... be there or be red-lined.

by Anonymousreply 69August 2, 2022 5:48 PM

CDOs help the corporation buy a float and advertising at Trans Pride every June.

by Anonymousreply 70August 2, 2022 6:43 PM

r69 You just proved my point.

I wasn't speaking about equity laws, the subject is on sensitivity training...

and you're quite, quite, sensitive, aren't you?

everything is patriarchy.

why don't the diseased gays give me validation?

Like HR, they create the illusion of work being done, meetings being held, opinions listened to, but like HR they are window dressing.

"But we have a Chief Diversity Officer and very active participation from all levels of staff.,"

The diversity officer "reports to the senior leadership team" but is not part of it; is always a woman to provide some company to the Chief People Officer; and has the power only to create a smoke and mirrors sense of movement.

by Anonymousreply 74August 2, 2022 7:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 75August 2, 2022 8:35 PM

Bring really shitty macaroni salad to the potlucks. I mean who the fuck wants pimento?

Infuriating and exhausting.

by Anonymousreply 76August 2, 2022 8:38 PM

They make you sit through endless seminars about what identifying diversity means, and what an inclusive workplace means etc. etc. It's basically saying the same goddamn thing 25 different ways, over and over and over.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting there thinking about the ACTUAL WORK that I need to do, but am unable to do, and wondering how the hell I'm going to catch up with all of it. But I can't do shit right now because I have to listen to "describe ways your organization can achieve the benefits of an inclusive work environment" for the 25th fucking time.

by Anonymousreply 77August 2, 2022 8:44 PM

They preach to the entire employee base about the importance of D&I despite it being a MANAGEMENT issue,

by Anonymousreply 78August 2, 2022 8:48 PM

They organize the St Patrick’s Day party and also Oktoberfest.

by Anonymousreply 79August 2, 2022 8:49 PM

They will FF you and you'll be banned from Datalounge even if you're a paid subscriber.

by Anonymousreply 81August 2, 2022 11:02 PM

R71, that wasn't my point at all. You missed it completely. I am the patriarchy. My point was you can't create an equitable culture through programs and false metrics.

I had you on block already. But for R81 I wouldn't be chuckling over a good decision.
