I've had so much disappointment and betrayal(like when my parents found out I was gay) in my life that I no longer feel passionate about anything. And of course things I was crazy about when I was young no longer exist so that's sad.

I’m in the Yukon at the moment, having driven here from Oregon, and I REALLY want to be home. Since February I’ve driven to Roswell, NM, and New Orleans, and walked through the Vermont Country Store(s) and Chicago, and other than riding through the Australian outback on the Ghan train, those are all the things I dreamt about when I was going insane at work. Now I just want to go home and be bored.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 2, 2022 11:14 PM |
I used to be passionate about many things but am now 56 and only like to drink. I spent years obsessing about exercise and my looks. Fashion kind of came along with that, and I enjoyed being well dressed and groomed. A few years ago (and a knee injury later) I realized that it isn’t worth the effort anymore. I also used to love to travel internationally, but it’s just a chore now, and I have visited 75% of the places that I wanted to travel to. My love of reading has faded over the years. My attention span isn’t what it used to be (probably from the drinking to be honest). I am a drunken, reality television watching, couch potato now.

R46, every generation of people thinks that they are living in historical times. Honestly, they all were correct. My dad attended segregated schools as a child and fought in Vietnam. Motorcycling. I dreamed of riding a motorcycle from the time I was 7, and I finally started riding when I was 23. I've been riding almost 41 years and I've ridden in 44 states (so far) and Canada. I belong to the Iron Butt Association (the easiest ride they do is 1000 miles in <24 hrs.) and I've done two of their rides. Over the years I've had two bad accidents and subsequently lots of metal body parts and broken bones, and it's finally starting to wear on me. But I'll ride as long as I can stand up and hold a motorcycle, and I've always assumed that I'll probably die riding one way or another.
I can think of a lot worse ways to go.

R77 in 1964?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | August 4, 2022 1:04 AM |
No, R75 -- I didn't have much upper body strength before I broke my shoulder last year (not on a motorcycle) and the Harley trikes take a lot of upper body strength to steer (plus they cost 40K new). I rode a two-wheels-in-the front trike briefly around a parking lot once, but I hated it. You don't lean when you steer them, and I kept feeling like I was going to fall -- something like the way it feels when I take my riding mower sideways on a hill.
There are some extremely lightweight motorcycles that I should be able to ride until I can barely walk (I'd even ride a scooter!), so that's the route I'll go. Hell, I even knew a guy who rode a Harley Sportster with one leg and a cane. I rode behind him in a formation for a couple of hours with my mouth hanging open every time we had to stop for a light. I have no idea how he did it, but he managed OK.
Never underestimate the determination of a real biker.

Vintage erotica and porn (1960-1980), I spend time researching the cast (male cast) and their film career before and after. Sex comedies, exploitations and later hardcore porn were booming after 1960s, many working directors and actors had no choice but to shoot these type of films for living. In countries like Italy, Germany, France, Spain as well as Brazil and Mexico, a lot actors in that era were involved in those films one way or another, it's always fun to locate the explicit films and scenes they had done in the past.

Our Spanish teacher brought in a tango dancer from Argentina who lectured about the beginnings of tango and stressed the European origins of some elements of the tango. He also stated more than once how Argentina has no indigenous people left not true). He was very proud of that. Argentinians like to think of themselves as the Europeans of Latin America. They're kind of cunty in that way.
"Even though the present forms developed in Argentina and Uruguay from the mid 19th century,[8] there are earlier written records of Tango dances in Cuba and Spain,[9][10] while there is a flamenco Tangos dance that may share a common ancestor in a minuet-style European dance.[5] All sources stress the influence of the African communities and their rhythms, while the instruments and techniques brought in by European immigrants played a major role in its final definition, relating it to the Salon music styles to which Tango would contribute back at a later stage, when it became fashionable in early 20th century Paris." It makes me cringe when people say that they're passionate about something like their boring job. Also, if you have to say that you're passionate about it, you probably aren't and are trying too hard to convince others. It should just come across regardless if it's true passion.

I think all of the nonsense about following your passion/dream was the beginning of the end.
Making narcissism and self-centeredness into not just a virtue but a necessity, while also making everyone think that reality doesn't matter; only your perception of it does. And/or that you shape reality by perceiving it a certain way. Which is of course balderdash.

Agreed, R134. While I posted my own contribution above, if someone were to ask me "What's your passion?" My initial reaction would be negative and skeptical of their purpose (and intelligence, probably.)
If I answered the question in that context, I would first say that "passion" wasn't the right word, but that I have a perspective and a history formed from lifelong interests.
Passion just sounds frivolous, the elevating of some mundane thing to a high emotional state.

R144 That rings more true too because one of the definitions of passion is "3. A state of strong sexual desire or love."
If anyone is wondering here are the two other definitions:
1. Strong or powerful emotion.
2. A powerful emotion, such as anger or joy.

I used to be passionate about music and going to concerts but after having tinnitus in my right ear that lasted from July 2020 until May 2022 resulting from ear buds, I will never go to a concert again or listen to music using ear buds

R162 I hate all musical theater except Hedwig And The Angry Inch and that production of Sweeney Todd that about 15 years ago that had bitchy broadway stare blowing on a trombone.
REAL LIVE KITTEHS…how I love them so. I am riddled with toxoplasmosis.

Now I know why DLers are a bunch of cunty bitches. A stark reminder to spend less time on here.
So many of you have other people renting space in your mind for free - like R124 - and his obsession with DJT.
Time to wean myself off this place.

R164 love the navel-gazing self-referential manifesto accusing everyone else here of being a cunty bitch

Does anyone else here struggle with trapped, pent-up or repressed passion & anger & creativity they can't access, release or use? It makes identifying and acting on emotion really hard. I only recently relearned how to cry again, and I still can't do it easily.
Therapy doesn't help. For me, even intense exercise, masturbation or other strenuous activities can't unpick the lock I have on this part of myself. I think that because I was a hypersensitive, peace-loving, people-pleasing and precocious child raised incorrectly and bullied a lot, I ended up shutting down emotionally in adolescence. I also had a few traumatic events coincide with the peak of my adolescent creativity, which scared me off expressing myself as an adult.

R29 are you marxist-leninist like me? Are you for the dictatorship of proletarians? Do you want to go to Moscow to pay hommage to Lenin with me.

Of course- skiing, tennis, animals, music- if I cannot identify something a person might be passionate about, I am unlikely to befriend them or in a professional sense, work with them.

To R174, I totally fucking agree with you!! When I was in Northwestern& then Wharton in Philly, i relieved all my stress from sucking cock(and their stress too). I loved the Factory workers cumming out of the bars after work. The ABS's and the Theatres were my playgrounds, I should have gotten a "double MBA-JD" in sucking working-class men cocks. Even sucked off a detective in Chicago who was working undercover in an adult theatre on a drug case.

Passionate about making money - and not working. Contradictory but I’ve made it work.
Used to be passionate about travel but it just disappeared. Now I’d rather be at home in my comfortable surroundings where everything is easy. Shocks me that sex and travel - the things that animated me for decades - no longer excite me. Aging is a revelation.

R185 so many people young & old centre their lives around sex & travel, and I just don't get the appeal of either and never have. My family joke that I was born with an ancient soul that's just over it all.
