The Murders of Russell and Shirley Dermond

In 2014, an elderly couple living in an upscale lakefront neighbourhood in Lake Oconee, GA, doesn't show up for a party. A few days later, friends investigate and find an undisturbed home, but, in the garage lie the body of the husband, cleanly decapitated. A week later, the wife's body surfaces in an area of the lake fives miles away tied to 60 lbs of cinder blocks, indicating the use of a boat. There was no theft, and video cameras were knocked out by a storm a few weeks previously. The investigation was professional and thorough, unlike a lot of botched cases we often hear about. Sheriff Howard Sills has a long, impeccable record of solving cases, including murders and arresting cult leader from a group called the Nuwaubian Nation for sex crimes against children. Except, this time with the Dermonds, he has been unsuccessful. Eight years later, (cute) YouTuber and citizen investigator Eric Alan goes on a hunt and found a New Jersey connection between the murder victim husband and the Nuwaubian cult leader, but then hits a dead-end. He also finds a video of Sheriff Sills on YouTube posted a month before the murders with a comment about beheading made a week before the murders. It still remains a mystery. Were the Dermonds murdered by a member of the Nuwaubian Nation? Was it a hitman? Was the murder in connection with the drug-related death of one of their children in 2000? It's scary this hasn't been solved.

What a wild story. Definitely targeted by someone they were at least acquainted with.

I live 30 minutes away from where this happened. About once a year the sheriff will give an interview where he says he's "still working on the case".

This is a really quiet area where this happened. Very low crime area.
